What I get for not paying attention

Without having the numbers in front of me, I know for a fact that I have less time for you than I did when I first started this blog. Back then there were -- I don't know -- maybe 150-200 sportscard blogs and I gave each one my undivided attention. I read all the stories, I played all the games, I entered all the contests, I even agonized when I couldn't participate in someone's group break. Today, there are a good deal number more blogs --- again, I don't have time to give you an exact number -- but that isn't even the reason why I don't pay attention to you as much as I once did. It's the vast conspiracy of life that's done it. I'm more occupied both in the job and at home. But even if I take everything at individual face value -- blog, job, home, family, other activities -- none of them seem as obviously more demanding of my time than they did more than five years ago. That's why it's a conspiracy. I don't know what's go...

A pack rip 23 years overdue

I won myself an unopened wax pack and some Dodger cards just for answering a simple question over at Closet Full of Cardboard . I'll show the Dodgers some other time when the mood strikes, but I need to open the pack now, because it's something I've never done before. I know. This is a pack of 1988 Fleer. I can hear you groaning already. But you can't assume that everyone was 10 and opened garbage cans full of cards in '88. I was 22, on the verge of college graduation, and had met my future wife only five months earlier. I spent '88 mostly in the company of my girlfriend, and I promise you the topic of baseball cards never came up once during that year. Twenty-three years later, the secret is out. My wife is all too aware of my obsession with baseball players on cardboard. I open packs right in front of her without shame or remorse. She's even bought some cards for me when she's feeling brave and daring. Things are a lot more comfortable now...

Good karma (the blue kind)

I've given a little too much publicity to the Rockies recently and that's just not good for a Dodger fan like me. It can't be good for the team I root for, can it? Karma and all that? Yes, I said, "karma." At this time of year I actually believe what I post on my stupid blog has an effect on how a team plays 3,000 miles from here. I believe anything at this time of year. Tell me that I need to boil an eye of newt to produce a Dodgers victory, and I'm at the newt store. So not wanting to upset the apple cart too much -- it is apple season, you know -- I thought I'd play it safe and post some Dodgers right now. These are some more goodies from Max. He sent me about two-thirds of the 1984 Donruss set, but that wasn't enough for him. He had to send me some more '93 Upper Deck for my set needs there, AND some Dodgers. Max, you're too much. So, aside from the Russell Martin SPx card that I got from Max, let's see what I received on the d...
