The chrome switcheroo

I received this card from both A Cardboard Problem and Cardboard Catastrophes within a few days of each other. I noticed immediately that the Chrome version of Jonathan Broxton was different from the Topps base version of Broxton. There's the base version. It was a pleasant surprise, because like many collectors, I enjoy when the Chrome card is not merely a repeat of the base card. I made the unfortunate choice of attempting to collect the 2009 Chrome set, in which the vast majority -- if not all -- of the cards repeat the photo in the '09 base set (rookies exclusive to the Chrome set excluded). I may be forgetting some very few differences, but I don't have the time today to match up every single card. I have noticed a few other examples of this year's Chrome photos differing from the base card photos. I don't know if there are more examples of this happening in this year's set than last year's. I have purchased only a couple rack packs of 2011 Ch...

Oh, Target card aisle how I've missed you, part 2 (the shiny)

I'm going to have a difficult time avoiding Topps Chrome this year. I'm trying to cut down because the last few years I've purchased quite a bit of it and haven't accomplished much. I'm still trying to finish off that '09 set. In fact, Chrome might be the most enticingly frustrating card product that there is. It's so shiny. So pretty. So inviting. So tantalizing. So touchable. So smooth. Soooooooooooooo -- soooooooooooo ... uh ... Hey, stop that. I was talking about CARDS. Really. You people. You're supposed to be above this. You've got families, and jobs, and grown-up furniture, and ... Ah, well. I can't argue with anyone named Brooklyn. The cards are so beautiful that even after the debacle of last year's Pringles Chrome set, I still can't resist buying them. Even WHILE the cards were curling up on me and rolling away so I had to spend all of my free time searching for them (not a true story), and W...

A real reason to open Opening Day

I have never purchased Topps Opening Day with any sense of urgency. In fact, any pack of Opening Day that I've ever bought has come with a customary sigh. (*sigh* well, there's nothing else here. I guess I'll see what Opening Day looks like this year. *sigh*) But this year is different. This year there is actually something I want in Opening Day. Something I NEED very badly. I wrote about it already . But if you're allergic to clicking on links, here is the image. I MUST acquisition these cards. Not only is it an entire insert set devoted to night cards (I think the last was the Upper Deck Vintage set from earlier this century), but the cards glow in the dark. Topps certainly knows how to make Night Owl happy. But the only way I was assured of getting one of these cards in my first purchase of Opening Day packs is by buying a blaster. I know that some friendly collectors will send me these cards when they have one to spare, but I need to have one NOW. So, ...
