A carriage for Simon de Montfort at the Battle of Lewes

Next weekend at Partizan our crew of Morris and Chums will be recreating the Battle of Lewes 1264 and a key part of the battle was Simon de Montfort's carriage that Prince Edwards troops took time to loot after defeating the Londoners rather than returning to the fray. By the time Edwards contingent re-joined the battle the Rebel barons were victorious!

But, we don't have a carriage! So a quick order to Warbases  and I was quickly to work!

The horses are also from Warbases while the driver and dog are left over from the Reconquer tanners that I painted previously, this chap looks like he's getting a piece of South Downs flint from one of the horses hooves. The bottle is from Bad Squiddo, a really useful set of accoutrements to add a lived in look to your dioramas.

The carriage itself is done from a basecoat of VMC Flat Brown, but I wanted it to look quite dirty after travelling over the South Downs so dirtied it up a bit.

I've since brushed off the clinging static grass that's showing up in the images!

Although my Barons War collection will be at Partizan I'll not be, inattention to the calendar means I'll be in Italy vacationing with Victoria that week!

Barons' War additions(11)

Victoria and I had had a weeks vacation in Cornwall at the back end of last month, I took the paints with me so that I could continue adding to the collection.

All the models this week are 3D prints from Medbury Miniatures and Reconquer Designs.

I picked up from Medbury a set of Knights at rest and Knights at prayer, this command stand features a mounted and foot knight at rest with a knight at prayer doing homage to his lord.

As usual for Medbury, beautiful figures with loads of character.

Of the remaining two figures from these sets, I used the Knight at rest on foot to make a lower level character and the other praying knight just on a standard base to fit in a unit where needed or use as 'dressing'

The crested helm and additional plate on the second knight puts him rather later than the 1264-1265 period of the rest of the collection and he may never get used, but still a nice piece.

This couple of sets are the remaining 32mm prints that I spoke about in my earlier post when I painted the 28mm versions of them. I was not going to paint these, but as they represent some of the last unpainted Medievals that I have I thought it would be rude not to.

Another set of tanners, I did not do a big single vignette like last time, with some of them done on individual bases this time around.

Lastly a Spanish shepherd with three mastiffs to guard the sheep.

Finally, from Reconquer Designs is this set of fleeing villagers, five figures, two carrying children, a pack horse and a hand cart.

These are very nice although I think that the detail is probably a bit to fine for gaming, I already broke one of the shafts on the hand cart.

So, that's the Barons' War project done for now, every figure painted! I planned to not buy anything else until the new Wargames Atlantic releases come out in the form of those command stands, but just did a trade with chum Tony so will be addng a few more command stands soon.

Barons' War additions(10)

Catching up with the blog posts, what with being on vacation and having some work done on the house I've fell behind a bit!

A whole box of Victrix Medieval Foot Sergeants joins the growing Barons’ War forces, enough for four more units for our Midgard games.

They are nice enough figures, but suffer from the usual Victrix problem of being too fiddly with easily broken parts. The dynamic poses on these make it impossible to base most of them on 20mm bases like the rest of the foot in the collection, so instead I opted for doing three foot on a 40mm base for those too big to fit individually on a 20mm.

Those easily broken spears I mention, of the seven here three did not survive building and painting, that one closest in this shot has been glued three times already.

If I did any of these in the future I'd stick to only making them with hand weapons.

Gambesons a plenty in this set, I think they come out nicely, but oh-my they do get repetitive after a while!

Some close ups of a few of the individual stands.

The standard is hand painted on cartridge paper and then plasticised with Mod Podge to give it both durability and flow. Like the spears, the standard pole broke and had to be fixed, hence the pronounced bend.

Nice enough figures, would I do more of them? No, I have enough already and these are not the best to build or paint.

Barons' War additions(9)

I've been working on more additions to the Baron's War collection.

These are the rather lovely Medbury Miniatures 3D prints sold in the UK by Garrison Miniatures on eBay.

The detail is exquisite and the prints are lovely, with just a single mis-print in these 12, but you'd hardly notice!

I am getting gambeson fatigue though, all twelve of these have them and the next lot that I'm working on also has loads of them!

The chap on the right in the above pictures is the aforementioned mis-print, it's hard to tell but he has no left forearm at all!

Barons' War additions(8)

A mixed bag of Medieval goodies for you this time.

Firstly, the last of the Wargames Atlantic figures I have painted, only 11 remained and have made their way to the end of the production line this week.

The last Knight and a pair of Serjeants.

A trio of peasants with pointy sticks for the militia and levies.

The last three crossbowmen.

A couple of missile-armed peasants, one with sling and one with bow. I'm quite surprised the arrow survived this far, this one has usually broken off by this stage!

It's the last of the Wargames Atlantic for now and I don't see me buying any more until the new sets come out, then I'll be picking up again. But it's not the end of the Medievals, only yesterday postie bought some Medbury Miniatures 3D prints for me.

Adding to the Medieval scene is this market stall. The stall itself is from Victrix, as are many of the accessories, although the crates on the right and the bucket are from Bad Squiddo, while the wattle fence is Renedra.

I got down low and shone in a light for this warts and all view of some of the detail!

Victoria picked up for me some of the Medieval Vignettes from Athena Miniatures while we were at Fiasco a few months ago, they are nice enough subjects, but some of the figures are a bit rudimentary.

The first is a set of stocks with an unfortunate being pelted with rancid cabbages.

The barrel of cabbages is from TT Combat.

Next is a baker from the artisan set, also comes with a rather nice oven.

The sacks and basket are from the Victrix set, while the bucket is a Bad Squiddo.

The next pair are a black smith and a cooper, the blacksmith is probably the weakest figure painted so far.

He could really use a forge!

Finally four other figures from the vignettes, a lady with a broom, a cobbler - will see use in a future Battle of Northampton game - a laughing merchant and a chap with his child on his shoulders.
