Picking up those brushes again.

Hi and welcome to the occasional mutterings of Dave Doc, a military modeller and some time gamer. Gaming and model making has given me a real education, History & Geography(obvious really), Artistry, Politics, Economics, Logistics, Project Management -you try building miniature armies without the last 3.

I will use the blog to record my creations & the odd occasion I actually do some gaming.

I have always been inspired by the aesthetic side of gaming. Playing on well constructed terrain using excellently painted units is always a joy.

Indians & Banditos

Well the title says it all. Another top up of kit for the Old West  , which  rounds off the figure collection and provides all the various elements required for the the "Serenity Campaign".

So first up  the natives from the Northern Indian Territory - these are the  factor that will unite all the various factions, and of course they will be happy to cause trouble at any time. These lads are by "Artizan Designs"

Coming up from the South we also have a nefarious band of "Banditos". These are by Knuckleduster (as is the casualty)

And some transport for the Man with No Name

So a few more items left to sort out, some more unmounted horses, wounded horses, few more wagons
and i think it will be finished

The return of the Bounty Hunter

I have added the last few Old West figures for a while. We see the return  of the Bounty Hunter - the previous one went to e-bay to help fund the project! A lovely figure of the "Man with No Name" (I love painting the design on the poncho)  by "ebob" , seen here talking to another incarnation of Al Swearengen by Artizan. I already have Al from the Blue Moon set so this one  will just be another gambler in town

Along with another couple of cowboys from the Artizan Trail Boss and Cowboys set. These two were a real pleasure to paint with great faces. Also there are 3 standing horses suitable for ones at hitching posts etc - these are by Knuckleduster. Also the fencing from Gamecraft - altogether 100 inches of it for $9.

Along with the foot figure to accompany the Pony Express mounted version.

So off to create some suitable shotgun templates and paint some more tartan. I may even have an initial game report next week for the Old West.

The Pony Express

Another addition to the collection. Artizan Designs figure galloping to deliver the mail and dodging outlaws and ner'do wells. There is also a dismounted version kneeling firing , he will be along shortly.

And some more of the good and upgright citizens of the town of Serenity courtesy of Blue Moon Manufacturing's Tombstone Civilians set - It really is a cracking set of very individual figures

Mrs Hilda Johnson and Eliza Johnson
Ned Johnson and son Gabby (he's a big strong lad)  from the Dried Goods Emporium
and some that are less often upright than the others if you know what i mean - resident at the "Cattlemans Saloon" , more often than not.

Phew - back to tartan for few days next.

It's getting crowded in town

I decided to push on with the last lots of Old West figures for a while, certainly I now have enough to be able to do a reasonable sized game.

So here we have some more of the good citizens of Serenity Flats.

Mainly from the Blue Moon Manufacturing Tombstone civilians. I love the Chinese character and will be on the look out for some more for the Chinese quarter and the railroad gangs. All the figures for the BMM civilians are very different and will give a good aesthetic appeal, just hope they don't catch too many bullets!

There are a good few cow hands and bad guys around

Black Scorpion Figures

Also rumours that Billy the Kid has been seen in town

Along with the crazy preacher , his girl and hanger one.

Well with all the trouble brewing there has been some hiring of lawmen to assist the town sheriff.

With Virgil and Wyatt Earp showing up again and Rooster has found a space in the livery for his horse.

There has even been a telegram sent to the Pinkertons

     Artizan Designs
I have done these to a simple game standard using a limited palette, with blocking, washing and a highlight. I was nice to get some extra colour on the ladies from the townsfolk.

Next up for the Old West is the Undertakers hearse waggon for the ride to Boot Hill..(it's going to be needed)

Also there are rumours of the Railroad in the distance, now just who will profit from that coming to town?

Back to more traditional Napoleonic and AWI for the next weeks.

Old West Town "Serenity Flats"

Welcome to the town of Serenity Flats. There has been some construction work lately with the towns first hotel the "STAR". This is a Sarrissa Precision MDF lasercut pack. Simple construction and simple drybrush to give a little distressed look.

Little Miss Sanders & the Barman "Friendly Brown"
Doctor Chapman - the town surgeon.

The "Mills gang" - Scorpion Jones, Rider Ray, Shane - "Gutbucket" - Fox, Bart "Shooter" Mills

Deputy Daniels

Now of course as this establishment has a card table it has attracted a certain "Doc Holliday"

I get the feeling it is going to be anything but quiet around here.

All but Doc Holliday are Black Scorpion figures, he is another of the 3 part set from Artizan Designs.

The cattle corral is on order with 50 head of cattle on the way!.

"Fill your hands Mister"

There must be any number of Old West cliche's to be used here. Anyway I finished up the first lot of the "Old West" purchases from Salute. Enough to get a game in I reckon. Here we have Ginger Lily and her gang. These are all Black Scorpion miniatures

Also that perennial Old West favourite - "Doc Holliday" , by Artizan Designs

I did these to a basic game standard - simple blocking work , washes then a drybrush. It gave a pleasant dusty look to the end result. I see some fantastic painted Old West stuff , but some of it is just too clean looking to my eye - i magine the old west as being dirty & muddy or dusty!. I have another 30 or so figures a mix of townsfolk, gunslingers ,lawmen etc to do and I will do them all similarly. Once done i will revisit to improve the overall look if need be. Looking forward to the first game against Scott's Marauders!

Anything but....

what I had intended to paint this week. You know - the butterfly syndrome - but good for the creative process overall. Having bought some shiny new metal at York I decided to paint some of it up, just for the enjoyment of painting. So I present a mixed bag of chaps with a Hollywood connection..

"The Man with no Name"

The poncho was fun!
By "Ebob" - right down to the cigar in his mouth - great stuff

"Zulu"
"Empress Miniatures" - the film characters set - I had to have it on in the background while painting.
'If it's a miracle, Colour Sergeant, it's a short chamber Boxer Henry 4.5 calibre miracle'

Lovely to paint really crisp and clean details - even have the medals on Colour Sergeant Bourne's chest!

"March or Die"

I watched this again after picking up some "Artizan Designs" French Foreign Legion figures from there March or Die range

The desert fort is nearly completed - will be used for Sudan and FFL games - so will have  get these pictured in it!

And the "Elite Miniatures" Legere recently completed are now based by Will - thanks for the photo

I have a couple of other single figure specials on the go as well at the moment , then its into serious amounts of Sudan stuff - I have checked figure totals and can now cover the battle of El-Teb at a 1-20 ratio - so that's the target for the end of the summer.  Of course there will Napoleonics as well - the Mamaluke band castings have just turned up too.. choices choices....
