Picking up those brushes again.

Hi and welcome to the occasional mutterings of Dave Doc, a military modeller and some time gamer. Gaming and model making has given me a real education, History & Geography(obvious really), Artistry, Politics, Economics, Logistics, Project Management -you try building miniature armies without the last 3.

I will use the blog to record my creations & the odd occasion I actually do some gaming.

I have always been inspired by the aesthetic side of gaming. Playing on well constructed terrain using excellently painted units is always a joy.

Gaming of the virtual kind - Old West - Shoot out in Serenity

It’s been a while since the Old West set has had some love, but with current Covid 19 lockdowns around the world I thought I would try some virtual gaming .

I have roped 6 players in to run a few characters each. We are playing by video chat, either individually or if time zones allow we will get everyone together .

So a few pics to kick things off

We will be using various f2f video options and also using Zoom

So let’s see how this goes .

Hammerhead weekend & Shoot out in Serenity

This weekend saw a trip down to Newark for the rescheduled Hammerhead show. I had roped in MartinC, JamesM and old mate Scotty for a evening away talking Wargames and drinking beer followed by gaming and/or topping up the lead mountain. Its was a great time - thanks guys.

All the games at Hammerhead are participation which is unusual for shows , but I think really helps to keep the full day alive , and you get people dipping in and out of games. We ran 4 games over the day - all of which were good fun. a number of comments said it played very cinematic , which it generally does is, so that was great. There were various visitors taking photographs and videos and I hope to see these as I look around blogs and you tube in due course. So here are some of the shots from the day

Just another busy day in town

The stockyard was full

The Bounty Hunter turns up

He has soon found a "prisoner" worth more alive than dead..

Get 3 coffins ready Mr Undertaker

more beans Mr Taggert?
The Pinkertons are in town asking questions , looking for the same guy the Bounty Hunter has - what  could possibly go wrong?

the prisoners 3 brothers  dismount outside the bank
The sheriff sensing trouble, draws his weapons!
I had stacked the hit deck with double the usual amount of fatal hit cards , to make things move at pace , and it really worked , with mayhem all round. Great games all , the Bounty Hunter won all 4 , but only just!

The icing on the cake at the end of the day was a £25.00 voucher from the organisers from a prize draw too.

I had good chats over the day, and caught up with a few of the big guys as well . There were lots of other really good games around , but I only managed a few very brief whizzes around the main hall and its traders . The stash haul was good..

Small KR case with trays for yet more Wings of Glory WW2 planes

15mm buildings and bits from Col Bills

decals for various WW2 projects

the stuff we bought with our £25 voucher..

Overall a really great weekend . I am hoping to herd the cats again for us to run something at the Other Partizan show in August.  Painting time has pretty limited of late , but I hope to get my desk cleared over the next few weeks with a bit of luck .

Battleground - Stockton on Tees 28th November

Just a few shots..

The Man With No Name surveys the town. We played a couple of games of our Bounty Hunter scenario - both went to the very wire with the final outcome decided just as the train left town - one the Bounty Hunter won... and the other he recieved a fatal wound on the very last shot! Great fun.

Had a good chat with a number of people - - and topped up on paints for the winter season.

The cattle baron.

I have finally managed to source a reasonable number of Longhorn cattle after long wait and search around.. These are 1/64th made by ERTL. They come pre-coloured with a mix of plain and patterned. A spray with a matt varnish and then dab of dark brown and a few differing washes broke the colours up. 25 head of cattle. Makes for a bit of fun with the castle rustling scenario, or the stampede through town.

Of course that means i may need to get a Cattle Barons house - which is another new item in the "to do" list.

Indians

I picked up these figures ready painted at the Scarborough show earlier this year to give my Indians some mounted figures. They are Wargames Foundry figures, and i thought they were nicely done and at a reasonable price from Colonel Bills. They are a bit more plains wars than the rest of the collection , but then that's an excuse to get some U.S. Cavalry.

I have been photographing them to make up cards and I particularly like this one. I need to come up with a name ...

Maybe they will get a run out at Blog-Con. Things are still on hold with the mine project until later in the autumn when i get the main work room sorted.

Some comparison shots

The Camp

Been working on adding a camp scene which can be used either at the edge of town , or as part of stand alone scenario.

The base is a piece of carpet tile, with PVA and the usual sand mix. The tents are separate Renedra items , mounted on base so they can be used  individually.  The fire contains a blinky so when switched on it flashes to provide the centre piece of the campfire scene.

The various pots and pans are by Dixon , as are the 4 figures

More beans? - Anyone seen Mongo.?

Off to work we go.

The hitching rope , with 4 hourses by Knuckleduster.

The Travelling Salesmen

In order to provide some more flavour to the wild streets of "Serenity" I am adding some more items. The brothers Johnson and their "Cure All" tonic. Maybe a swig of it will help the aim or enable that morale roll to be passed.

The wagon is the Peddlers Wagon by Blue Moon Manufacturing Wagons Ho! range. The brothers Johnson are I believe giveaways from the Partizan show - i picked them up from ebay. I just need to find a suitable driver figure.

I made the wagon signs by downloading some "Western" fonts from DAFONT (lots of other kinds available and FREE!) and installed them on the pc then in Word , or Photoshop they are available. Then it is a simple print off on clear transfer paper , seal it with and acrylic sealer and once dried apply.

A few more things to do this week for the weekend visit to WARTORN at Scarborough.

cheers
Dave

A Call to Muster 23rd March Middlesbrough - Good fun was had!

The Old West Collection has been out on the road this week at the new show "A Call to Muster" in Middlesbrough. So a few shots of the the full town, and some of the fun. We ran it as a participation and had few games, roping in Andy from Ainsty Castings -for the last one which was nice as I had a pile of his kit on the table (Andy - thanks for the discount on the next distraction project! - you lot will just have to guess)

And a few more kindly provided by Count Belisarius

Plenty of action with a couple of participation games held - the undertaker has his hands full. Although it was good a job good old Warbases had delivered a new load of "out of ammo" markers , there was some terrible shooting - a one point everyone was "out of ammo". Thinking about taking it on the road to WARTORN at Scarborough next.
