Picking up those brushes again.

Hi and welcome to the occasional mutterings of Dave Doc, a military modeller and some time gamer. Gaming and model making has given me a real education, History & Geography(obvious really), Artistry, Politics, Economics, Logistics, Project Management -you try building miniature armies without the last 3.

I will use the blog to record my creations & the odd occasion I actually do some gaming.

I have always been inspired by the aesthetic side of gaming. Playing on well constructed terrain using excellently painted units is always a joy.

Gaming - ‘Nam - at The Other Partizan

Last weekend saw a group trip to The Other Partizan . Martin and I had decided to get the Nam stuff out and give it a showcase . We had a lot of interest in the table and Martin sold some of our rules as well

We had decided an on armour led column heading to a NVA base village/town . It was a chance to get some unusual kit on the table .

The first RPG shot took out an M48 , good job the wrecker was near by .

As usual the Skyraider was getting lots of interest

DiscoDave, Czartank, James , Martin after the Saturday set up .  Next stop was beer and curry

I am currently offloading various bits to clear some space in the ongoing storage wars so I had a session at the tabletop sale which went well .

I terms of purchases there was the British Highlanders from Empress for my Back of Beyond force .plus a random modern special forces on  Skidoo - yeah I know - but they looked cool .

I just need a James Bond and his Moll figures now I guess

With the darker nights , it’s time to get back painting .

Gaming - the ‘Nam campaign

Friend Martin and I are revisiting the ‘Nam with a long term Tour of Duty campaign .

My guys are Bravo company , 2nd Battalion , 9th Regt . 3rd Division USMC . Ironic these had a nickname of “The Walking Dead” .

We played a few games with Martins company - and he’s on a real dice downer at the moment with two of his three squads now being seriously depleted- and on of them have 9 MIA and taken prisoner last week . This week he was off seeking redemption. It didn’t work , any my Bravo company boys were sent it to add some proper steel . They landed , dealt with the NVA , found the hidden prisoners , found the arms  cache ,  burnt the village , back home to base and be loved long time . Good fun was had

NVA look on
Martins chopper get taken out by an NVA RPG . Big boom , time , all the crew were captured .

Bravo company clear the village and find the stash .
Burn out the VC supporting village.

Pre game recon pictures show VC heading to the village

Dug in positions

More VC on the trail

I will have it out at the upcoming games day

Nam ‘68 - Gun Trucks

Just a bit of catch up post as I realised I hadn’t ever posted these. At Historicon in 2023 I picked up some stuff directly from Bob Mack 3d . These are a couple of resin printed Gun Trucks .

The crew man on this one is a Gringo40s guy that was firming a 50 cal

They are excellent quality prints

I have also had some tray inserts may to hold my Marine squads . They are placed over the ferro sheet and the figures are magnetised .

3 fire teams , sergeant , Blooper goy , Corpsman , a LAW guy and Two M60 teams . The second iteration will be extra engraving - work was done by Pendraken .

‘Nam - USMC top up

Another collection gets some love this winter is the ‘Nam. I have made a little hole in the lead pile by completing the outstanding fire support for the Marines . There isn’t that  much left in the lead pile box for this now - until Gringos tempts me with yet more stuff!

3 M60 teams , 3 81mm Mortars , a 50 cal , and a spare couple of guys I found already undercoated . All by Gringo40s as usual.

Sandbags for the 50 cal base are hand made from milliput.

So here is the completed fire support stuff for the collection

The box is now full - so for now I guess that will have to do !

Gaming - ‘Nam - Operation Black Knife

The first game at home for the year sees a return to SE Asia. This time a 1 on 1 game using The Nam - The Way it Was rules.

A VC force has been spotted and the Marines are sent on a search and destroy . The VC  have their own objectives to complete as they are mustering supplies and forces for the future , so they have to get stuff off board , which means it’s not just a straight up firefight.

The VC are set up initially on blinds with some blanks . The US made a reasonable intel roll and chose 7 or the 12 to reveal finding some key teams and some blanks . Game on

US Forces

4 x 4 , Fireteams with M16’s . All trained

2 x M60 teams

1 Lt (veteran),  , RTO , and Grenadier (7x Grenades ), 1 Corpsman

1 Mortar team , Veteran

 VC ,

4 x4 rifles teams - with limited ammunition , trained

1 x 4 SMG team, veteran

2 x 5 AK47 teams , trained

2 x LMG teams, veteran , 1 x RPG

2 s Sniper (placed at far end of table). Veteran

VC supply column - 2 bikes , 2 carrier figures , 1 VC command - veteran

3 hidden caches - rolling on a d8

Card deck has 1 per squad , plus random event and joker .

First squad off the chopper.

The LZ is under observation

Halt ! - booby traps - punji sticks.. luckily they were spotted.

Ambush!

Incoming ! RPG!

Mortar section is set up on the cleared LZ.

1st round on target - takes out the RPG and his mates.

The VC supply column is though getting away

The LT finds another way through .

Sniper ! Wings the LT and kills the RTO.

Another LMG team opens up - the Marines just charge .

VC escape across the river - grenades and shots just don’t stop these.

VC command stay to  conduct  the defence.

Bug out time for the VC as the Marines get near the village

Casualty evacuation

A cache of weapons is discovered in the village too.

Great game only just won by Pete’s USMC final weapons cache discovery, found as a result of hiding from the sniper, they nearly missed it! 5 US KIA 3 wounded . 5 wounded VC captured - 14 KIA . The majority of the VC supply column got away . They will be back!

A few overhead shots of the wider table - until next time
