''Change of Pace'' is Greyhounds' second - and finest - collection of funky, blues-and-R&B-laced rock and roll.
Where their last album, 2014's acclaimed Accumulator, focused on internal emotional turmoil and personal relationships, Change of Pace draws its inspiration from the outside world and the struggles the duo sees every day in Texas and on the road.
From the slow-burning anthem "Walls", to the lighter "Late Night Slice", to the deep wells of emotion that bubble up on the heartbroken "Cuz I'm Here" and the funky "For You", the album showcases the remarkable artistic maturation the band has undergone in the short time since releasing Accumulator.
Derek Trucks raved that "Greyhounds make real music, the right way and for the right reasons", while JJ Grey described their songs as "landing somewhere between a heartfelt hymn and the dirtiest jank you've ever heard in your life", and Gary Clark Jr. summed it up simply as Greyhounds "crushed it as usual". The war is on for your mind, and Change of Pace is without a doubt a win for the good guys.

Change of Pace is an accurate title for the third album by Austin-based retro duo the Greyhounds. While Anthony Farrell and Andrew Trube haven't thrown in the towel on their '60s infatuation, they have indeed dialed back the noisier, bluesier elements of their music -- the very things that made them seem like cousins to the Black Keys. In their place is an elastic groove that is sometimes underpinned by circular drum loops, bringing this within the vicinity of G. Love & Special Sauce. Ultimately existing in a realm far away from those blues bros, the Greyhounds love both the sound and songs of classic soul, so Change of Pace winds up as a salute to both the feel and the form. Occasionally, mood may trump melody but that's more a feature than a bug -- that tendency helps give Change of Pace a warm, weathered coziness that's catnip to anybody who loves classic Memphis soul and Southern rock as much as this duo.

Rising out of the Austin, Texas music scene, the Greyhounds, a duo comprising guitarist Andrew Trube and keyboardist Anthony Farrell, feature a unique sound that mixes R&B, soul, funk, and the Bakersfield country of Buck Owens into a style that has been described as "Hall & Oates meets ZZ Top," and the duo's exciting live shows have earned them a large and loyal fan following. The pair met in the late '90s, and immediately began writing and playing together, placing tunes with artists like Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks while building up a songwriting catalog and gathering new fans with each show. The Greyhounds signed a three-album deal with a reconstituted Ardent Records (by this point officially called Ardent Music) and released Accumulator early in 2014. Two years later, the group released Change of Pace, a record that emphasized their soulful side.
