Viola – Karen Waltuch
Keyboards, Tenor Sax, EWI – Travis Laplante
Violin –  Caley Monahon-Ward

Ocrilim, Dirty Projectors, Seductive Sprigs and Zs member, Charlie Looker, has started this project called Extra Life in 2006, playing alone and has expanded it into a full band in 2007, while leaving Zs. Looker describes this project as "Dark heavy art song" and indeed the music is song-oriented, complex, angular and disjointed. Said to be influenced by the mix of elements of chamber and medieval music influences with the math/avant-rock of his previous band, Zs and some pop sensibilities, Extra Life creates a special and eerie feeling in their first full-length Secular Works (alluding to the works composed by medieval composers which were not meant for religious purposes such as masses, hence called secular).

Skeleton Crew – Live Im Kulturkeller Würzburg 10/82 (1982, Cassette, Switzerland)

Live at the Kulturkeller in Würzburg, Germany, October 1982
Cassette released by Rec Rec Music, Zürich, 1984

Tracklist:
1. Side A (21:42)
2. Side B (20:19)

Musicians:
Fred Frith: guitar, violin, keyboards, bass drum, hi-hat, tapes, voice
Tom Cora: cello, bass guitar, homemade drums, vocals
Dave Newhouse: saxophone, drum kit

The show is actually a succession of short tracks with Skeleton Crew performing unparalleled and unequaled complex instrumental songs, disrupting common songwriting schemes whatsoever and particularly normal live performance configuration. Dave Newhouse of The Muffins is joining on saxophone and additional drums, though the
core duo of Frith+Cora was able to perform on several instruments at the same time as evidenced on their innumerable other live recordings. The musical irony in Skeleton Crew is comparable only to Negativland’s first LPs of the same period. For instance, at 6:30 in side A, a John Philip Sousa symphonic march is played as ironic background noise and at 18:00, Ronald Reagan is heard backward reading his famous quote: ‘We’re still free in America’. Additionaly, the trio is able to find its way through various musical genres, passages in this live recording verging on the experimental, noise or concrète music, while elsewhere the music is blues, avant rock or system music. Occasionaly, a song from their first 1984 LP ‘Learn to Talk’ is played in a more or less recognizable form. There is a possibility this cassette was issued as a parallel release with their first album to gather them more tour dates especially in Europe. These guys were undubitably great showmen. Cora died 1998. Thanks to HC Earwicker for the music. (continuo.wordpress)

DEMI SEMI QUAVER got started as an experimental-avantgarde rock outfit featuring Emi ELEONOLA, a female vocalist of marked personality. Dressed in a bondage suit, Emi utters a weird and mysterious lyrics called 'Eleonola Language' upon their songs, that can charm the audience into Demi Semi world. In 1995, they appeared on Japanese underground rock scene with their eponymous debut album full of experimentalism, aestheticism, avantgardism, and individualism. A magnificent lineup - Yuji KATSUI (violin), Steve ETOH (percussion), TELLASIT (guitar), Hidenori YOKOYAMA (bass), and Koichiro NAKA (drums) - supports her, and they leaped into Japanese Underground Stardom.
Through many active gigs, DEMI SEMI QUAVER made their major debut with the third album '3' in 1996. They often appears on stage despite of getting less active than before, since each member can get more renowned currently as a session musician or a member of another progressive rock project (Emi has got a versatile artist e.g. actress, model, or fashion designer).

LP released by AYAA, France, 1989

After the first two La 1919 albums (his duo with Piero Chianura) in 1985 and 1987, Milanese Luciano Margorani, born 1961, went on to release his first solo album, ‘Home Recording Is Killing Studios’ on French label AYAA. His solo output retains some of La 1919’s characteristics: elaborated guitar parts with drum machine and keyboards, plus extraneous noises and found sounds. Thanks to the A.D.N. label and a few others, the worlds of industrial rock and avant-rock started to mingle a little, though I’m not sure the audience of the mid-1980s was actually ready for this kind of crossover. On ‘Home Recording…’, Margorani collected poetical sketches on guitar and Casio CZ 101 he recorded in 1987. The tracks are more focused than La 1919’s and the sound more polished, closer to the Fred Frith/Henry Kaiser duos. Like the former, Margorani is able to bring new ideas and surprising twists in his guitar playing, and to keep it exciting throughout. Both Margorani and La 1919 resumed publishing discs in the 21st century with several new releases each.

Albert Marcœur ‎– Album À Colorier (1976, CD, France)

This was the fantastic 2nd album by Albert, which, like his first, was originally released on French Atlantic. A brilliant musician, composer and arranger, the closest comparison one can make is that Albert is the French Frank Zappa, except that that doesn't really do Albert or his original music justice.Coming just two years after his first (the shortest time between albums Albert has ever managed - he works carefully and SLOWLY), this might have been slightly overlooked by folks. Don't make that same mistake now; this is a stupendous album with great melodies, musical surprises galore, brilliant orchestration and much more. He had a big budget and big ideas on this outing, and this comes highly recommended. (wayside)

Tomografia Assiale Computerizzata began as a one-man-band hiding the multi-instrumentist and sound engineer Simon Balestrazzi, which would later join Kino Glaz, Kirlian Camera, Bron Y Aur.
His first LP under the name T.A.C. came out in 1983 (or maybe in 1982) and features a very peculiar, Nurse With Wound-ish sound interbreeding such diverse styles as no-wave, electronic experimentation, progressive rock, radical improvisation and post-punk.
The rattling, crunchy guitar sound isn't far from Fred Frith's distinctive style in his no-wave project Massacre, and the shattered jazzy orbits it follows are quite close too. The telluric funk-punk basslines contribute creating bony, deconstructed pieces with everchanging rhythms and meters. Then come the electronic incursions of polluted radio frequencies and background buzzes, which give the music an eerie, dismantled feeling.
The lyrics are often quasi-nonsensical, but reflect the aftermath of the strong political engagement of the Seventies. Repetition and obsessive rants are the key elements of Balestrazzi's neurotic vocal style.
T.A.C. sound is completed by occasional free saxophone bursts, atonal piano figures and sparse folkloric remindings. The final result is something between Henry Cow, This Heat, The Work, with a more sinister, industrial mood. (Il golpe e l'uva)
