"The Japanese avant-garde pop band strove to create a “sacred ambiance” on their second album, fusing unconventional arrangements with bouncing volleyballs and an eyes-wide air of wonder." “It’s rare that art-pop matches its extravagance with such alluring modesty. In doing so, Paradise of Replica feels like encountering cinematic spectacles in miniature.” —Joshua Minsoo Kim

Roger Miller's career is one of the most adventurous in rock history. He began with Sproton Layer, a Boston band who played psychedelic, Pink-Floyd-like music (and which had their first album With Magnetic Fields Disrupted published by New Alliance just in 1992). Miller became then the guitarist of Mission of Burma, the legendary punk band also from Boston. Afterwards, together with Erik Lindgren, Miller founded the Birdsongs of the Mesozoic. As that experience also came to an end, Miller had revealed himself to be a virtuoso of the piano, which was soon to be his only instrument.
...
Miller's classical ambitions are more evident in The Big Industry (Ace Of Hearts, 1987), a maximum electric piano album (where maximum stands for prepared). It contains blurring, industrial mini-symphonies (above all The Age Of Reason and the title-track) and surreal, crazy lieder (Portrait Of A Mechanical Dog). The ballad Groping Hands, based on a weak metallurgic poli-rhythm, is emblematic. (Scaruffi)

DEMI SEMI QUAVER got started as an experimental-avantgarde rock outfit featuring Emi ELEONOLA, a female vocalist of marked personality. Dressed in a bondage suit, Emi utters a weird and mysterious lyrics called 'Eleonola Language' upon their songs, that can charm the audience into Demi Semi world. In 1995, they appeared on Japanese underground rock scene with their eponymous debut album full of experimentalism, aestheticism, avantgardism, and individualism. A magnificent lineup - Yuji KATSUI (violin), Steve ETOH (percussion), TELLASIT (guitar), Hidenori YOKOYAMA (bass), and Koichiro NAKA (drums) - supports her, and they leaped into Japanese Underground Stardom.
Through many active gigs, DEMI SEMI QUAVER made their major debut with the third album '3' in 1996. They often appears on stage despite of getting less active than before, since each member can get more renowned currently as a session musician or a member of another progressive rock project (Emi has got a versatile artist e.g. actress, model, or fashion designer).

Clonicos from Spain was active from 1984 till 1994. This 1986 release is an interesting mix of post-punk, avant-garde and pop/rock. Although experimental and chaotic in places, the production remains pop. The compositions contain elements of spoken word as well as generous spaces for imporised and arranged brass section, which keeps the entertainment value throughout the album.

Anatrofobia, meaning Fear Of Ducks, was formed in Perosa Canavese, Italy in 1991, taking its name from an American comic strip. The core trio consisted of brothers Luca Cartolari (bass and electronics), Alessandro Cartolari (alto sax and elecotrnics) and Andrea Biondello (percussions) who experimented and improvised together. Their first album, Frammenti Di Durata, was released in 1997 through C.M.C. In 1998 Mario Simeoni (flute, sax) joined them and in 1999 they recorded their second album, Ruote Che Girano A Vuoto, followed by yet another lineup expansion and a 2001 release Uno Scoiattolo In Mezzo Ad Un Autostrada, which received wide acclaim and won the remio Darwin 2001 best Italian album of the year. Being hard at work, the band recorded and released in 2002 their fourth album, Le Cose Non Parlano, with the collaboration of lessio Pisani (bassoon), and Roberto Sassi (electric guitar). This album again received praises and came in second in the Premio Darwin 2002. In 2003 they recorded a track for the tribute album to King Crimson and also released another album, Tesa Musica Marginale, which was released in 2004. In 2005 and 2006 they contributed composition to two music collections: Suono Sonda 4 (the track L'ultimo Grande Statista) and BääFest: 1stand2ndyeardiary (the track Mi Prenderò Cura Di Te). In 2007 a change of direction came with Brevi Momenti Di Presenza, in which they shifted from fusion to focus more on electronic and free improv approach.

The Parasites Of The Western World ‎– The Parasites Of The Western World (1978, LP, Usa)

"The Parasites Of The Western World are a band from Portland OR who released their recorded debut in 1978. It's a fascinating spin, a galactic ramble across the otherworldly themes of alienation and paranoia, seemingly inspired by LSD and Philip Dick. Primarily the creation of Patrick Burke and Terry Censky, the Parasites were limitless with invention and completely DIY. This is a record that was recorded in an apartment, by a crew thoughtful enough to curtail its loud excursions for the daylight hours. Its rockist moves are surprisingly informed by the typical institutions of this era : Pink Floyd, the Beatles and Hawkwind and its many electronic flourishes are an above-ground sound that would presage the likes of Vertical Slit, F/I and Vertigo. The Parasites remain to be light years ahead of a time that has yet to come." Includes poster and insert.

The first album from Patrick Burke's space-punk collective uses heavy, phase-shifting guitar, fuzz bass, and electronics galore. Chrome, MX-80 Sound, Vertical Slit, and earlier futurists like Heldon and Eno share similar realms as this underrated, under-heard album from Portland.
"Mo" is a rocking opener with alien vocals. It's the most punk number on the album, and a preview of the sound they'd unleash on "Substrata".
"Electrokill" is a brief noise loop of the kind avant-noisemakers love tinkering with. "Flying" is a "Telstar"-like instrumental with wide, buzzing organ. I wish they'd written in a vocal, or something to make it really memorable. "A Rare Case Of Blues" is a snippet of studio jamming. I'd call it filler, but maybe they were trying for a Zappa-esque collage effect. It's only a minute long; compared to the filler blues jams on earlier psychedelic albums this is a very minor flaw.
"Funeral For A Mouse" closes the side and is a stately bass and keyboard instrumental. The drums kick in after five minutes and the synths sound like the ones of Battiato's "Fetus" album.
"Accessories" is where this album really earns its wings. Terry Censky's fuzz bass leads the way through a jungle of otherworldly sounds. At the 6 minute mark the vocals begin, over a stomping beat, and machine shop noise sculptures which fly and spin through the mix. An awesome centerpiece, and a bold distillation of Magma and Faust.
"Accessories" is such an awesome trip that the acoustic ballad "God or Just a Slow Breeze" and the piano and synth duet "Siege of Twilight Loon" are easy to overlook. Their inclusion feels pretentious and old-fashioned for 1978. Perhaps they were running out of studio time. "Alienending" is two minutes of backwards voices and ostrich guitar ... I have friends who used to trade tapes of this kind of doodling.
The side is saved by "You Must Be Joe King", a fully stacked psych nugget, something like Tuxedomoon paying tribute to SRC. Flipped with "Mo" this would've been a killer art-punk single. The album is worth it for "Accessories" alone, and their combination of fuzz bass and cosmic noise is potent when it comes together, which is about 2/3 of the time. With another strong number on each side "Parasites of the Western World" would be a classic.

Killsong ‎– He Is Risen (2013, CDr, Australia)

Songs:
1. Dear Anthony
2. Pissflaps' Magic Medacine
3. Is That You Mr Roebuck?
4. Hotdogs
5. He Is Risen (Slight Return)

Musicians:
Bass – Josh Ahearn
Drums – Alon Ilsar
Guitar – Dave Sattout
Saxophone, Clarinet – Ian Pieterse
Vocals, Violin – Daniel McIvor

Killsong's debut album is one of the most twisted and enjoyable albums to come out of Australia in some time; an unhinged, avant-garde assault resembling Frank Zappa on crystal meth, a coked-up Captain Beefheart and a rambling Tom Waits in the depths of an ether binge.
Killsong cultivate a style that sporadically embraces spoken word poetry, world music, progressive rock, metal and sheer inanity. Few groups have trod the fine line between genius and madness with such reckless abandon.
If this band didn't feature veterans of Australia's experimental music scene, you'd be forgiven for thinking this was a field recording by escapees of an insane asylum. Members have previously played in Squat Club, Darth Vegas, The Bakery, Mr. Bamboo, Slimey Things, The Bznzz, Jimmy Swouse and the Angry Darts, and Rica Tetus amongst others.
