ALTERS is a Polish group of appreciated artists, creative musicians and modern rock fusionists. Following a passion in both the traditional and odd grandeur of the XXth Century's music, and also basing their influences (which bring together many innovating and very notable rock, jazz and avant-garde musicians), they skip though much of the conventional shine, being able to bring forth, themselves, a particular assortment of rock, of dark fusion, of sound streaming and of small avant-garde exhibitive flairs - in an artistic, gripping, talented, interesting way.

The band formed in 2001, after some workshop sessions, the members befriending thanks to the feeling that, out of their strict rock devotion, a great musical experiment and exteriorization can be realized. The core of ALTERS is currently formed by four Warsaw artists: Michal Soltan plays piano, guitar and is the vocalist, Pawel Zalewski works with synthesizers, plays sax and (most surprisingly) viola da gamba, Lucasz Smolinski is the bass guitarist Robert Pudra plays the percussions. ALTERS, however, had and still have a lot of collaborators, like trumpeter Rafal Ganko, visual artists Majsen and Tomek Ebert or keyboardist Michal Lapaj, from RIVERSIDE. With powerful and consistent live performances, the ensemble received nice prizes, popular and critical recognition. After a knot of demo music and over five full years of work, their debut, MILD: Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams, centres their fusion, whether odd or dark, and sparkler sound/visual rock triallings.

Influences reflect an important side of ALTERS. Just like they combine the standard with the alternative and the uncanny, the progressive sound comes less from YES and GENESIS, has a natural twist from the mid-period PINK FLOYD, but essentially resembles KING CRIMSON's dark rock inkling. Their power fusion reaches the good quality of SBB and maybe something from MAHAVISHNU, the musician sharing an idol in Miles Davis's full innovations and masterpieces. The Polish prog relation can, in the end, place a straight link to Czeslaw NIEMEN's experimental classic phase or to INDUKTI's contemporary cutting edge of music.

Believing relentlessly and incessantly in their talent of creating modern music that's full of diverse and improvised senses, plus being genuinely tempted by a never-ending fusion of tastes and techniques, ALTERS can have an impressive edge in the spotlight of rock, jazz, indie art and avant-garde. They're prog rock, art rock, modern rock and beyond. (progarchives)

Note
Recorded live on June 22, 1992 at The Church Of St Vitus, Wrocław, Poland.

“Avant-folk”, “ethno-psychedelic minimal”, and even “post-Komeda-jazz” – there are just a few examples of how was described the stylistics of Księżyc (The Moon) – a music group founded in the early 90s of the last century and reactivated in 2014.

Księżyc (Moon) was a project from Poland active in the 1990s. Members included Agata Harz (vocals), Katarzyna Smoluk (vocals, piano), Robert Niziński (wind instruments, keyboards), Lechosław Polak (accordion, keyboards, synthesizers), and Remigiusz Mazur-Hanaj (lyrics, tapes). The spirit of Księżyc captures early and late music with a medieval sound, rooted in Slavic tradition combined with elements of minimalism and vocal experiments of the 20th century. The alchemy of these constituent parts results in a breathtaking original music, both delicate and sinister. The surreal, fairy-tale-inspired lyrics add to the inherent beauty, sadness, and madness within. Originally released on cassette and 10" vinyl by OBUH Records in 1996, the group's defining statement has now been remastered by Piotr Nykiel at Nykiel Audio and cut on 12", allowing for vastly improved sound quality.

Unique ethereal avant ritual folk with female vocals, not to be missed by anyone interested in music of strange & exquisite beauty.Relesed by Poland's Obuh label.
Michael J. Salo wrote in 2005:
Just continuing the description above. I can hardly contain my enthusiasm for this release. I love this music. The best I can try to explain Ksiezyc ("The Moon"), is some blend of the romantic-acoustic-ballad Prikosnovenie school groups such as Fleur, together with the psychedelic experimentalism of the great Polish acts Atman & Magic Carpathians. I'm also getting a Jack or Jive vibe out of this (a Polish Jack or Jive?) Anyone interested in any of the above references should aquire this album without hestitation. The female vocals are higher quality than 90% of music recorded today, and meanwhile there is more careful attention to instrumental sonics than you could ever expect in vocally-oriented music.Available information in English on this group is scant, but this new release is apparently a collection of all their recorded music, which dates back to the early 90's. Who knew? It's tempting to declare, "ahead of their time," but that wouldn't be quite right. Instead this band is completely removed from time. This is timeless.A hand numbered limited edition item, in appropriately unique & beautiful handmade packaging. Talk about a gem. (mutantsounds)

Laboratorium ‎– Anthology 1971-1988, Nagrania Wszystkie (No... Prawie Wszystke) (2006, 10xCD Box-Set, Poland)

This box set compiles all the albums released by the Polish Jazz-Rock Fusion ensemble Laboratorium, which was without a shadow of a doubt one of the best and most important Fusion outfits in Eastern Europebefore the fall of the Iron Curtain. Over the years the band managed to release ten albums, an unprecedented achievement at the time, of which seven were studio recordings, two were recorded live and the last one was a compilation of previously unreleased tracks. Two of the studio albums were released on the legendary Polish Jazz Series (Volumes 49 and 58). All the ten albums were remastered for this box set release and expanded with a plethora of bonus tracks, which include studio outtakes, radio and live performances and mini-sleeved. The booklet includes a detail history of the band and reflections about the albums by the band's founder / leader keyboardist / composer Janusz Grzywacz.
As all ensembles Laboratorium changed lineups over the years, but enjoyed relatively steady personnel for extended periods of time, which undoubtedly added to their success. Most of their material, which is covered by their second to sixth albums (and the compilation album), was recorded by a steady lineup, which included in addition to the leader also saxophonist / vocalist Marek Stryszowski, guitarist Pawel Scieranski, bassist Krzysztof Scieranski and drummer Mieczyslaw Gorka. On the later albums the lineup includes Grzywacz and Stryszowski (who are the only musicians appearing on all the ten albums) with guitarist Ryszard Styla, bassist Krzysztof Olesinski, drummer Andrzej Mrowiec and percussionist Jan Pilch. The debut recording, which initially occupied only one side of an LP, features the legendary Polish violinist Zbigniew Seifert and is stylistically quite close to Free Jazz in contrast to the Fusion direction adopted later.
The band performed only original music, which of course was a courageous decision, and with a singular exception, all the music enclosed herein was composed by Laboratorium members, mostly by the leader but also by others or co-composed by the band. Over the years Grzywacz emerged as a first rate tune-weaver with an excellent ability to write great melodies and riffs, which make the music accessible, even when it becomes quite complex. The music remains intelligent and ambitious throughout, with a remarkable consistency of high-level quality. But the most important factor of Laboratorium was its ability to constantly evolve and change, which is quite evident to anybody listening to the music in the proper historic order. Grzywacz slowly moved from acoustic to electric piano and then to synthesizers, but never indulged in mindless pyrotechnics which so many of his colleague keyboardists fell victim to during that period of time. Laboratorium managed to avoid that terrible, obnoxious 1980s cheesy synthesizer sound, which is a success in itself.
Although most of the music performed by Laboratorium is instrumental, they used the human voice time and again in an instrumental capacity. These vocalese experiments are all quite interesting and present another layer of the band's musical range. It seems that Polish Jazz is particularly fond of such experimentation since its early days and it's definitely interesting to hear how Laboratorium handled them.
There are endless moments of musical joy inside this box set; virtuosic performances by the musicians, especially those by Krzysztof Scieranski, who stands easily shoulder to shoulder with such bass heroes as Jaco Pastorius, beautiful melodies, funky grooves, superb guitar and keyboards solos, in short Fusion heaven for all connoisseurs of the genre. I can't imagine any Fusion fan anywhere on this planet not being melted away by the beauty of this music.
The box set is an individually numbered limited edition and if you can put your hands on a copy, don't you dare to hesitate even for a moment – it's worth its weight in gold! (search: http://www.adambaruch.com)
