Bates closed Sunday's 126-118 double-overtime loss to the Pacers with 25 points (9-19 FG, 7-15 3Pt), six rebounds, two assists and one block across 42 minutes. Cleveland had already claimed the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference a while back, so they opted to rest most of their rotation Sunday. That allowed Bates to see extended run, and the second-year forward responded with multiple career highs. Bates made just 10 appearances in the regular season, averaging 3.7 points in 7.5 minutes per contest.

Notches 25 points
Bates closed Sunday's 126-118 double-overtime loss to the Pacers with 25 points (9-19 FG, 7-15 3Pt), six rebounds, two assists and one block across 42 minutes. Cleveland had already claimed the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference a while back, so they opted to rest most of their rotation Sunday. That allowed Bates to see extended run, and the second-year forward responded with multiple career highs. Bates made just 10 appearances in the regular season, averaging 3.7 points in 7.5 minutes per contest.
Gets run in garbage time
Bats (personal) played the final 2:11 of Wednesday's 124-105 win over the Knicks, finishing with three points (1-3 FG, 1-2 3Pt) and one rebound. The two-way player made a cameo for the Cavaliers in garbage time. It was his first appearance at either the NBA or G League level since March 16, as he had previously been tending to a personal matter. Bates will be available for the Cavaliers for the remainder of the regular season. Still, he won't be eligible to suit up in the playoffs unless he's upgraded to a standard contract.
Not listed on injury report
Bates (personal) is off the injury report for Wednesday's game against the Knicks. Bates hasn't suited up for the Cavaliers since Feb. 12 while playing for the G League's Cleveland Charge. However, he missed the end of the Charge's season due to personal reasons. The 21-year-old finished the 2024-25 G League campaign with averages of 17.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 0.6 steals across 31.0 minutes per game over 23 appearances.
Drops 33 in G League win
Bates tallied 33 points (11-24 FG, 6-15 3Pt, 3-3 FT), six rebounds, five assists, one steal and one block across 35 minutes Thursday in the G League Cleveland Charge's 130-116 win over the Raptors 905. Bates dropped a season-high 33 points. The 21-year-old forward bounced back with a vengeance after two forgettable performances in which he failed to crack double digits in the scoring column. He's averaging 16.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.
Makes garbage-time cameo
Bates (knee) played the final 5:36 of Monday's 118-92 win over the Suns, finishing with zero points (0-2 FG, 0-2 3Pt) and no other statistics. The two-way player made his first appearance at either the NBA or G League level since Jan. 10, after missing time due to what was apparently a minor knee injury. He didn't check into Monday's game until the outcome was already decided, and Bates doesn't look as though he'll be in the mix for a rotation spot with the Cavaliers anytime soon. Expect Bates to rejoin the G League's Cleveland Charge once the Cavaliers get at least one or two of Evan Mobley (calf), Isaac Okoro (shoulder) and Caris LeVert (wrist) back from injuries.
Listed as out for Tuesday
Bates (knee) is out for Tuesday's game against the Pacers, Evan Dammarell of DownEuclid.com reports. Bates is still managing a knee injury and is listed as out for the Cavaliers' matchup against the Pacers on Tuesday, but he figures to spend the majority of his time in the G League going forward. His next chance to play for the Cleveland Charge arrives Sunday against the Motor City Cruise.
Undergoes knee surgery
Bates underwent surgery Wednesday to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, Spencer Davies of SI.com reports. Bates will be re-evaluated in approximately one month, by which point a timeline for his return to basketball activities should be more clear. The 2023 second-round pick spent most of his rookie season with the G League Cleveland Charge, and across 18 games he averaged 19.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists across 34.6 minutes per game. He did appear in 15 games for the Cavaliers during the 2023-24 regular season and averaged 2.7 points across 8.9 minutes per game.
Gets another two-way deal
Bates signed a two-way deal with the Cavaliers on Tuesday, Keith Smith of Spotrac.com reports. Bates was the 49th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft but spent most of his rookie season in the G League after inking a two-way deal. He made 15 NBA appearances last year and averaged 2.7 points in 8.9 minutes per game. Bates possesses enough talent to be an NBA contributor but has to improve his consistency if he's going to carve out a role for the Cavaliers, who've established themselves as potential contenders with Donovan Mitchell at the helm.
