Latest Yankees News
Clayton Beeter : Optioned to Triple-A
The Yankees optioned Beeter to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. Beeter is clearing out to make room for Rico Garcia, who was officially added to the roster after being claimed off waivers earlier this week. The 26-year-old Beeter made two appearances during his stint in the majors, getting tagged for six runs with a 1:4 K:BB over 3.2 innings.
Clarke Schmidt : Deems TJ surgery successful
Schmidt shared on a personal social media account that the Tommy John surgery he underwent July 11 was successful, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Schmidt stated in his post that he plans to "focus on healing" as he works to return to competition. The righty hurler was in the midst of a standout campaign before getting hurt, posting a 3.32 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 73:30 K:BB over 78.2 innings spanning 14 games. Though Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he was unsure if Schmidt got the internal brace version of the surgery, per Phillips, the current expectation is that Schmidt probably won't be ready to pitch in a big-league contest again until the 2027 campaign.
Rico Garcia : Claimed by Yankees
The Yankees claimed Garcia off waivers from the Mets on Monday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Garcia tossed 4.2 scoreless frames with the Mets but was nonetheless removed from their 40-man roster last week. He is out of options, so the reliever will go directly onto the Yankees' active roster as a bullpen arm.
Luis Gil : Hits 50 pitches in first rehab start
Gil (lat) struck out six and allowed one earned run on two hits and one walk over 3.1 innings in his rehab start Sunday with Double-A Somerset. Just as the Yankees had planned for him heading into the day, Gil reached his limit of 50 pitches in the rehab start, his first outing at any level since Oct. 29, 2024. The reigning American League Rookie of the Year Award winner was diagnosed with a high-grade lat strain early in spring training and is expected to be built up conservatively during his rehab assignment, which could last for as few as two or three more starts. According to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, the Yankees are considering bringing Gil back from the 60-day injured list once he reaches 75 pitches in his rehab program, though his assignment would be extended if the organization instead opts to activate him once he reaches the 90-pitch threshold.
Giancarlo Stanton : Pops fourth homer
Stanton went 1-for-3 with a solo homer in Sunday's 4-1 loss to the Cubs. The veteran designated hitter tied the game at 1-1 when he knocked a 371-foot solo shot off Chicago starter Shota Imanaga in the second inning. This marks the fourth homer of July for Stanton, as he's started to find his groove after returning June 16 from tennis elbow in both arms. Across 10 total contests this month, the 35-year-old has hit .250 (8-for-32) with 11 RBI and six runs scored.
William Warren : Concedes two runs in loss
Warren (6-5) suffered the loss Sunday against the Cubs, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks over 5.1 innings with one strikeout. Warren held his own across 88 pitches against a Chicago lineup that entered this contest ranked second in total runs scored. All of the damage against the New York right-hander's line came via the long ball. Warren gave up a solo shot to Michael Busch in the second while the second run he yielded happened when reliever Ian Hamilton allowed a two-run blast in the sixth, permitting a runner stranded by Warren to score. Even with an eight-run disaster against Toronto on July 2 in the mix, Warren has been a viable fantasy arm since the beginning of June, pitching to a 3.94 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 43:20 K:BB across 43.1 innings. Through 95.1 total frames, the 26-year-old sports a 4.63 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 112:44 K:BB while conceding nine homers.
Max Fried : Blister improving
Fried (finger) said Sunday that he's uncertain if he'll be ready to make his first start following the All-Star break next weekend in Atlanta, but he noted that he's improving as he recovers from a blister, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Fried was pulled from his most recent start in Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Cubs ahead of the fourth inning due to a blister on his left index finger. The left-hander said Sunday that he's moving in the "right direction" and "getting better," but the Yankees might not have a better idea regarding his status for next weekend until he throws a bullpen session in the next few days. The three-time All-Star has enjoyed an impressive first season in New York, posting an 11-3 record, 2.43 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with 113 strikeouts over 122 innings in 20 starts.
Benjamin Rice : Sitting against lefty Sunday
Rice is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs. The left-handed-hitting Rice will head to the bench for the second straight game while the Cubs send another lefty (Shota Imanaga) to the hill. Though Rice has maintained a .795 OPS through six games in June and owns a 134 wRC+ versus opposite-handed pitching this season, the Yankees have yet to commit to using the 26-year-old as a full-time player against righties. Rice was on the bench for three of the Yankees' previous five matchups versus righty starters, with Paul Goldschmidt occupying first base in each of the contests that Rice was out of the lineup.
