Upcoming release: Karl Evangelista - Apura!

We had a nice mail from Karl Evangelista commending us for keeping the blog running and for contributing to his musical education and asking us whether we could spread the word about his upcoming release. We are only too happy to oblige, considering that the release is right up our musical alley. It is a highly interesting meeting of two generations with Evangelista and Alexander Hawkins representing the youngsters and Trevor Watts and Louis Moholo-Moholo the veterans.

Scheduled for release on 22 May, tomorrow as of writing, it can be ordered from the Bandcamp site:

https://apura.bandcamp.com/

Karl A.D. Evangelista - guitar
Alexander Hawkins - piano
Louis Moholo-Moholo - drums
Trevor Watts - alto and soprano saxophones

Recorded October 14-15, 2018 by Benedic Lamdin at Fish Factory Studios, Willesden, London, England.

A couple of tracks can be previewed on the site. Interestingly, the word "apura" in Tagalog (spoken in the Philippines) translates into English as "Very Urgent" which was the title of an album released in the late 60s by the Chris McGregor Group of which Moholo-Moholo was a member and Alexander Hawkins is a member of Moholo-Moholo's current outfit, Five Blokes. Trevor Watts was very much a part of the late 60s alt-jazz scene, too. Just connecting the dots ...

LOUiS MOHOLO-MOHOLO - London Jazz Festival 2010

This was drummer's 70th Birthday Special concert at LJF 2010 in two sets. First set reunited Louis with Keith Tippett under the title of their 1982 FMP album No Gossip, second set presented him with special version of his Unit. I recorded the broadcast off the BBC i-player and kept the whole sequence with announcements and interview, given in the afternoon before the concert. For various reasons it took me almost 3 years to prepare it for posting, so at last here it is. All the best in 2014 to all.

Alexander Hawkins & Louis Moholo-Moholo. Sunday 7th April, 2013

Just by nice coincidence, Alex Hawkins informed me at FB today about this new video being uploaded - HD recording of full duo concert at the Gateshead International Jazz Festival, The Sage, Gateshead. So I think it is appropriate to post it here. Louis and Alex released a studio recording Keep Your Heart Straight on Ogun last year. Another good message is that Ogun just reissued Brotherhood of Breath's Procession, remastered with 3 songs (over 20 mins) from original Toulouse performance (I believe) added, and it is already available from Wayside Music or Downtown Music Gallery !
