Wadada Leo Smith Golden Quartet - Live In Paris October 19, 2015

This concert was the third part of a long evening celebration of the 50th A.A.C.M anniversary.

The first band was under the direction of Henry Threadgill, the second was a powerful duo Roscoe Mitchell/Mike Reed and this last performance was the ultimate version of the golden quartet. This last performance was simply amazing.

(POST-12-8-2008)Another timeless relic from the halcyon

years when the New York loft scene was burgeoning with fresh talent. Lindberg and Bang are both particular favourites of mine ,discovered years ago whilst stumbling across those early new york string trio records on black saint. Lindberg was a teenage prodigy who was playing with the likes of Jimmy Lyons, Roscoe Mitchell, Anthony Braxton and Sunny Murray while barely 18. Those more familiar with either of the two's later work may struggle at first to find a way into this session which is about as thorny as anything from the period. the pieces are largely improvised and make full use of extended techniques like col legno , and scrapping, and even what sounds like tapping the soundpegs inside the resonators of the instruments. This is the only ANIMA lp i've ever come across ,it appears to have been an artist run label that was very short lived.. ive included scans of the contemporaneous catalog in the files. this is truly superb and still sounds very fresh. i recommend the flac's ,but will also upload the mp3's. BTW/ im hoping someone has the collaboration by David Murray and Charles Tyler mentioned in the catalog as the next forthcomming release. enjoy!!

This ones for Aussie Tony, not my favorite Lowe by any means... flawed by the very high standards of ' the Flam', and other magnificent masterpieces ...by F.Lowe who simply was one of the of the greatest period.!

the AACM and more specifically Wadada Leo Smith;s influence is obvious here

My own dessert island selections, apart from 'the Flam' are the ferociously beautiful collaborations with Joe Mcphee on legend streets one and two.... check them out on the Cadence website!

and yeah..Polly Bradfield, is subtly brilliant  here , she should be as famous as John Zorn , who doesn't to my ears sound entirely comfortable.

"Organic was organized to present an electric music idiom that utilized the same performance principles that Wadada’s other ensembles use. This means that the ensemble’s use of languages and systems are fundamental to the conception of making music. The instrumentation consists primarily of electric strings (4 guitars, cello, 2 basses), but what is truly different with Organic’s music is its ability to establish a polycentric / polytonal and multi-layered grid where each performer has the right and responsibility to creatively organize the ensemble’s musical space and ideas as it moves across the performance dimension. hello again
heres one by another, master bassist, john lindberg,as far as i know, its out of circulation
along with most other fantastic, free/post free
releases on this lable.
john lindberg seems to have been a prodigy from quite a young age.
pretty sure i red somewhere that he studied with david izenzion(of the famed mid 60's ornette coleman trio)and roscoe mitchell,at a less formal level.

he made his illustrious debut, playing with the likes of sunny murray, jimmy lyons and kershavan maslak.
then around 1978-9 formed the string trio of new york with billy bang and james emmery.

In 1979 he formed his first ensemble dedicated to the performance of his compositions, and since has made more than two dozen recordings that feature his works, under his name. In all there are over eighty original pieces that have been recorded to date, some repeatedly in various versions. His ensembles and duo collaborations have performed throughout Europe, North and South America, East Asia and the Middle East. As a bassist he has appeared on over sixty discs, including landmark recordings with Anthony Braxton, Jimmy Lyons, Steve Lacy, and Tony Coe, among others. Currently he is active composing for, performing and recording with his various ensemble projects, as a solo bassist, and with the String Trio of New York, while being actively involved in teaching through the giving of workshops and lecture/demonstrations on composition, improvisation, and bass and ensemble performance in diverse educational settings. His course Words and Sounds (connecting literature and music) has been widely taught at colleges and universities. Additionally, with the String Trio of New York, he has created the innovative Human Residency, linking musical creation with a variety of the humanities.
