Vlatko Kučan Quartet Feat. Tomasz Stanko - Live At Palo-Palo - True Muze 1991

Our trip in the East goes on with this saxophonist from Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina). But even if Vlatko Kučan have kept some connections with his native country, he lives in Germany since the seventies. Under his name he have made only one album that is presented here but he have played with many renowned musicians including Anthony Braxton, Steve Swallow, Lester Bowie, Carla Bley, Marion Brown  or Dieter Glawischnig to name a few. But Vlatko Kučan is also working as composer for theatre, movies and radio; his works includes also meeting between music and philosophy and poetry. Last but not least he have also studied psychoanalysis and he teach and practice musical therapy. Considering that, no surprise that his discography as a leader is so small.

TOMASZ STANKO / BOBO STENSON / ANDERS JORMiN / TONY OXLEY - Bosonossa and Other Ballads (Gowi 1993)

Great version of Stańko Quartet, which recorded albums Matka Joanna and Leosia. This collection on Polish label Gowi preceeded them, and songs 3 and 4 were recorded again at Rainbow Studio for ECM. Bosonossa is out of print for long years - I remember Czech distributor for Gowi telling me when I saw empty jewel box with cover in his shop that the master was lost and cd will not be re-pressed. Radio broadcast with this line-up from 1996 was posted earlier by Andy an can be found here. Enjoy.

TOMASZ STANKO - Almost Green (Leo 1979)

"Almost Green" is fourth and last record by great Stanko Quartet with Vesala and Szukalski, this time with wonderful dwarf Palle Danielsson on bass. Released by Finnish label Leo Records in 1979, this album was preceeded by "TWET" (Muza 1974), "Balladyna" (ECM 1976) and "Live at Remont" (Helicon 1978), each with different bassist. But always the rhythm section sounded pretty heavy and whole quartet freshly and recognizably. Maybe it is wishful thinking from my side, but I often thought when listening to "Balladyna" that there are some similarities with great Elton Dean Quintet's "Boundaries", and I got that feeling again with "Live at Remont" and "Almost Green", which were completely new to me during last weeks... Thanks to original uploader svantetic and his former blog Almost Black, and to mew23, who kept this rip and shared it with us. BTW, "From Greenhills" theme is reprised as title track of Stanko's 1999 ECM album "From The Green Hill".

TOMASZ STAŃKO / STU MARTiN / JANUSZ STEFAŃSKi - Fish Face (1973)

A real rarity requested recently. Fairly experimental session, with Stu Martin playing mostly percussive and alien-like synthesizer sounds and lines. Similar in feel to Dean / Gallivan / Wheeler - "The Cheque Is In The Mail" from 1977 on Ogun. Informative review of "Face Fish" and other recordings by Tomasz Stańko can be found on great Polish Jazz blog. Good sounding 256 kbps mp3 rip available yet - any upgrade is welcome.

2. INTERNATIONALES NEW JAZZ MEETING AUF BURG ALTENA 1971

Rare performances by: Peter Brötzmann Trio, Alan Skidmore Quintet and Michael Osborne, Tomasz Stanko Quintet,  New Jazz Ensemble and Karin Krog, Albert Mangelsdorff Quartet & The Trio (Surman, Phillips, Martin).
Although the sound is not the best - like a bootleg - to my knowledge it is a bootleg - this double LP offers a glimpse into an otherwise insufficiently recorded phase of European Free Jazz .

My appreciation goes to J. for ripping his LPs for me and now then for you - please say thanks to him.
