Masahiko Satoh - Pavane Lachrymae - Denon 1978

Several years ago I interviewed Masahiko Satoh, probably for the french magazine "impro jazz". One of my first questions was about the incredible diversity of styles he has been playing since the beginning of his career. He then replied, "I have no particular style, when I started to play to win money, the first band I played with, was a jazz band, if it had been a tango band I will become a tango pianist. Reality or casualness of the answer?

1 From The Highest
2 No nights are dark enough
3 And tears, and sights, and groams
4 My weary days
5 My fortune is thrown
6 And fear, and grief, and pain
7 Let me live for lorn

MIHO KEI & JAZZ ELEVEN "KOKEZARU KUMIKYOKU" (MCA, 1971)

Here's what mvns about this LP: "Arranged and composed by Keitaro Miho (he didn't perform in this album), this is a spiritual adventure to a world where traditional Japanese music clashes and melts with contemporary jazz improvisations. The result is a monster of an album, with soaring vocals, searing saxophone and shakuhachi solos, mad electric piano action, uplifting koto strummings, as well as grooves so hard it feels you got punched in the gut."
[There is a CD version (out-of-print) which is a disaster, sound quality-wise - crude needle-drop. There's also a vinyl reissue but it's out-of-print as well]

Here we have another high quality rip by mvns - my thanks goes to him.

HELEN MERRILL with the GARY PEACOCK TRIO "S'POSIN" (VICTOR/STORYVILLE, 1971)

The great Helen Merrill's most challenging, outer worldly record ever, featuring loose, free  highly textured arrangements by Masahiko Sato and Peacock, recorded just 4 months before the epochal "Samadhi' by the trio...
This also features a touching version of Ellington's 'In a sentimental mood' which is so obviously Gary Peacock's very moving tribute to Jimmy Blanton... beautiful oh so beautiful, painfully so..

Only reissued on Cd in Japan and out of print to the best of my knowledge ..
This rip is taken from the early 70's Storyville LP ..

Helen Merrill is as far as i know still recording...and well worth supporting !
she has a website here

Attila Zoller-Masahiko Satoh, A Path through Haze 1971-MPS

In a completely different vein , heres a beautiful MPS session from 1971, featuring legendary post bop guitarist Atilla Zoller, Harmonically Challenging and at times tonally ambiguous ,though relatively straight ahead with lots of delightful free wheeling interplay,by Satoh and Zoller.

All in all rather reminiscent of  the material performed by a sensational mid sixties band led by pianist Don Friedman, that recorded a couple of albums for Prestige
the best of which ,"Metamorphoses" happens to be among my favorite records...(available on CD and well worth checking out)

To my knowledge this hasn't been issued on CD outside of Japan , unaccountably given its superb quality!... it has been around in mp3's which perhaps can still be found around the blogosphere.

this is ripped from a very clean copy , made by Teichiku in the early 70's

Masahiko Satoh-'Yun' Solo Piano Vol2-1976

Here's another, superb solo piano lp, I know absolutely nothing about the circumstances surrounding this recording ,what i do know is that ive always considered Masahiko Satoh to be one of the
most distinctive , authentic Japanese Jazz pianists , a superb improviser whatever the Context.

This was the second in an early series of solo recordings from the 70's...

its Dense , and certainly to these ears Satoh seems to submit to and absorb the influence of Cecil Taylor(something i havent heard before on albums under his name) .. that said there is also THAT distinctive spaciousness which seems inherent to most Japanese free jazz of its day.

Pretty Sure though not absolutely Certain that this is not currently available , i welcome correction on that score..

Masahiko Togashi-Gary Peacock-Masahiko Satoh-Wave, 1986

A small contribution to the Celebration of Masahiko Togashi's great oeuvre
A warm reunion, Gary Peacock , hooking up again with Old Friends, Togashi &Satoh, having spent the early 70's in Japan as a student of George Ohsawa, founder of the the Macrobiotic Diet.
Peacock recorded prolifically during that sojourn including several albums with  Togashi notably the profoundly beautiful Voices (Nippon Columbia 1971) and  with Satoh(Samahdi, Far East 1971)

This Appears to be out of print at source, a thorough internet check reveals that there are but a few copies available through Amazon, at well over the Hundred Dollar mark, with only one purporting to be 'New' at 40 or so dollars , hard to know for certain ,I am open to correction on the above point..
beautiful stuff Enjoy!!

PS .. the availability of Peacock's records is Commensurate with his stature, a first choice recommendation for anyone wanting to explore his records under his own name would be 'Voice from the past' an atmospheric session Featuring Stanko and Garbarek  from 1982 on ECM

As for Masahiko Satoh , One cant recommend strongly enough, the Hugely Potent "Yatagarasu' ,a trio with Broetzmann , and Moriyama, on the NOT TWO label
And the Magnificent, 'Signature' with Joelle Leandre , and Yuji Takahashi on RED TOUCAN

STEVE LACY SEXTET "THE WIRE" (DENON , 1977)

Lacy's ,Greatest Japanese lp (IMO, not that i've heard them all), and a very strong Contender for Best Lacy record period !

this was without a doubt one of his very best bands, the searing ecstatic almost unbearable intensity of most of this set ,is unusual and not often found in Lacys ouevre
Even on 'Free'classics like forrest and the zoo,and Roba, lacy is often restrained ,dry analytical , and sounding slightly detached.

Here we have some of his most violently expressionistic gestural playing on record, all while maintaining the spacious and uncluttered character of this sequence of Japanese records...

This definitive version of Deadline ,  is incredibly haunting ,Ikeda, Yoshizawa and Midorikawa hazily shimmering beneath some opiated distant glimpse of a slowly submerging dissapearing floating world ..

Unique and very beautiful....

S

"This album has a very dark mood, especially with the arco basses and the dissonant piano. The percussion too adds to the mood.
Every one plays well and interprets Lacy's composistions in a way that works exclusively with the selected sideman. If the album was recorded with his regular group at the time (Abei, Potts, Few, Carter, Johnson) it would have been completely different."
