After Loading Up A Craigs-find Sunday I Thought I'd Drop By The Goodwill On Cherokee Street...'Cept It Ain't A Goodwill, It's A Salvation Army. Not Open On Sunday, But Then I Found This Joint: Strange Overtones, Which Was A Bit Of Serendipitous Luck. Status: Gorgeous Goods..

20140202_135428

I kind of accidentally found this place on Cherokee Street Sunday afternoon after failing to realize the thrift store I was hoping to pillage was, in fact...er, not open on Sundays.  Lucky me though, 'cuz this place is freakin' great!  Who needs a Restoration Hardware when you can get an eclectic mix of the Real Thing right down there on one of the most interesting boulevards in St. Louis.

Everybody Talks About How Big A Deal It Is To Purchase A House...Heck, I Found One At The Flea Market! And I Didn't Even Have To Take Out One Of Them Fancy Loans Either. Neither Will You, I Suspect. Status: Little Pink Houses - For You And Me.

"Made In The U.S.A."  Not many toys can boast that anymore.  "Tin" litho' toys are great nostalgia finds at the flea markets and even though this one isn't as old as some of the truly valuable pieces, I'll take what I can get!

Other Recent Long Weekend Thrifty Thrift Finds. So Many Great Smalls. Making Up For The Dry Spell Not Too Long Ago. Status: Raining / Pouring!

DSCN2092

The craziness here is all the Ice Buckets I've been finding lately!  I've got maybe 10 or even as much as a dozen now.  Some are more interesting than others and some are in better condition than others.  This one is a great style but has condition issues.  I'll be dropping it off at the Green Shag Market in my booth (44) soon as is but it could be done up nice with some polishing.

I've Suffered Through A Bit Of A Dry Spell With Finding Nice Artwork Until Lately. Here's A Couple Of The Keepers That Have Turned Up Recently. Status: Just For The Pretty

DSCN1875

I've found a number of nice prints and originals lately and of them I'm smitten with this black and white painting of what I've figured out is Piazza San Marco in Venice Italy.  I had a couple other pieces out and asked the Girlfriend whether they should stay or go and the pencil portrait by a June Kessler struck her fancy.

What? You Thought I Was Done With The Motels / Signs? Capri Village - Lake George NY. Still Dreaming Of Vacation. Status: Great Sign / Great View!

DSCN0503

Now don't that just tug at ya? What more could you really want from your vacation digs? It's Right There on that beautiful beautiful lake! We so almost ended up staying here but I'm just so darn cheap.

Don't This Look Like A Mighty Relaxing (And Shadey Yo!) Place To Relax On Your Lake George Vacation? Status: Flower-escent

DSCN0487

We checked out a LOT of Hotels and Motels around the Lake George NY area while we were there.  All were pretty nice.  Some were just more charming than others, like this little joint: the Flower Cottages.

Thanks To Mod Betty Over At Retro Roadmap We Were Lucky Enough To Catch A Douple Feature At A Drive In Theater While In NY! Status: Avengers / Brave.

DSCN0698

I made sure I took a good look at the Retro Roadmap map page for upstate New York before we made our way to the Adirondacks for our vacation. We didn't see everything on the map but we LOVE Drive In Theaters so of course we checked out the Glen Drive In.  It was even CHEAPER than our own beloved Skyview Drive In...huh!  Who knew?!

If You Happen To Be Tooling Along Highway 70 Near Pocahontas Il. And Need A FANTASTIC Place To Sleep For A Couple Nights, Look For This Sign! Status: You Gotta Check This Place Out!

DSCN0318

This is right off highway 70 about 40 miles east of downtown St. Louis. We pulled off just to check out the Village Square antique shop and shoot some pictures of this amazing sign. While shooting the sign I decided to ask the Powhatan Motel owner if it might be OK if I took a look at one of the rooms and maybe shoot some photos for the blog. He was more than happy, which took me by surprise...until I saw the room.

The Girlfriend Had A Great Idea: Guess What This Room Cost Us Saturday Night! Status: Late Night Find.

DSCN1038

We were on our way home Saturday night, looking for a place to crash for the night at about 11pm when the Girlfriend spotted this joint.  Even though we've spend most of our Vacation in independent motels I was still dubious.  We asked to see a room and...Oh...Em...Gee.  Es...Oh...El...Dee.  Take a peek inside to...well, see inside!

When In The New York Adirondacks Mr. Modtomic Stays At The King Hendrick Motel. Well, It's Where We Stayed For Our Week Long Visit Anyway. Status: Modtomic Approved!

DSCN0785

We drove all up and down the "strip" through Lake George and up north of town along route 9 but eventually decided to try the King Hendrick Motel out.  We got a little unattached cabin type room for the full week for $400.  I thought that was a deal.  Again, let me qualify this by saying that it is not a Pristine Holiday Inn Select or the like.  It is perfectly adequate for the somewhat adventurous traveler on a less than "price no object" budget.

A Beautiful Blue Sky And The Wind In Our Face! Happy Summer To Ya. We Are In Lake George, New York And Having A Blast! Status: Few Hours Late...I'm On VACATION!

DSCN0681

So what's a Modtomic vacation like? Full crazy adventure and excitement! Like today...what did we do but get dragged precariously behind a speed boat on beautiful Lake George 300 ft. in the air! And of course, we're gonna find some interesting places along the way. This time...a cute cottage court where the staying is VERY reasonable!

Yard Art. Well....On A Monumental Scale Anyway. Status: Ever Been?

DSCN7233

I've always loved the Gateway Arch and the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, even way WAY before I knew who Eero Saarinen was or what Modernism meant!  I've only been up to the top once and unfortunately it was all cloudy and foggy.  But I love just strolling the grounds.

While We Were Walking Around In California This Spring I Snapped Some Shots Of Stuff I Though Looked Cool. Status: Is It?

DSCN6654

I spotted this building the first time we were in Oakland and took some pics with my phone.  This time I was smart enough to take the real camera with me!  I LOVE this tile.  Could you imagine having this in your kitchen as a backsplash or around your shower in the bathroom?

An Anonymous Comment On The Urban Ore Posting Mentioned Ohmega Salvage...Of Course, I Got Some Pics Of That Great Berkeley Resourse As Well! Status: Documented.

DSCN6712

This place has some really beautiful vintage home restoration salvaged goods.  If you are anywhere near by and are engaged in a restoration or retro-renovation this place should be on your short list.  If they ain't got it, it looks like they might be able to find it.

New Vintage Modern Religious Architecture Feature. Status: Makes Ya Think.

DSCN5644

Have you ever noticed that some of the wildest, most adventurous, least conservative architecture of the 1960's was religious in nature?  My particular neighborhood is rife with very liberal looking houses of God.  I'm starting with the King's Crown of Mod Religious Architecture here in St. Louis.  The Catholic Center building on Lindell Blvd.

Summer Time Road Trips Just Ain't Road Trips Unless You Stay At Some Kitschy Motels! Status: Kitschy? Check! Motel? Check! Stayed? Check!

DSCN3170

"Sleep in a Wigwam"!  Yes please! Upon "planning" our summer road trip, staying a few nights here was the first item on my agenda.  If you have seen the movie Cars you will recognize this style motel as the inspiration for the Cozy Cone motel!
