Ray LaMontagne, KT Tunstall, & David Gray - Songwriters' Circle, Bush Hall, London, Britain, 10-22-2010

Here's another episode of the fantastic BBC TV show "Songwriters' Circle." This one is from 2010, and features the singer-songwriters Ray LaMontagne, KT Tunstall, and David Gray. As is the usual with this show, they took turns singing their own songs, backed just by their acoustic guitars (and sometimes each other).

LaMontagne has an interesting back story. He was working at a shoe factory in a small town in Maine, when he heard the song "Treetop Flyer" by Stephen Stills. The song inspired him to quit his job and become a musician, despite having no special interest or background in music at that point. His debut album "Trouble" was released in 2004. It sold half a million copies in the U.S., and the title song was a hit in Britain. His next three albums from 2006 to 2010 also did well, with each one going Gold in the U.S. (Although his sales have slowly declined since then.)

Ray LaMontagne - Wikipedia

I've already posted a lot of music by KT Tunstall, so I don't feel the need to summarize her career here.

David Gray was born in England and mostly raised in Wales. He started out a fairly typical folk singer-songwriter. But his first three albums, released in 1993, 1994 and 1996, didn't stand out or sell well. His fourth album, "White Ladder," released in 1998, was different. It combined the folk style with electronica. At first, it also was basically totally ignored. But it was released in 2000, and began to slowly build momentum, helped by the hit song "Babylon." It ended up doing great in the U.S., selling two and a half million copies. But it did even better in Britain, selling over three million, which is especially impressive considering the U.S. population is four times as large. In fact, according to Wikipedia as I write this in 2026, this album is one of the top 30 best selling albums of all time in Britain!

But he wasn't just a one-album wonder. For instance, his 2002 album "A New Day at Midnight" went Platinum four times over in Britain, and sold half a million copies in the U.S. as well. He's been especially popular in Ireland, where his albums have broken some sales records.

Here's his Wikipedia entry:

David Gray (British musician) - Wikipedia

Unfortunately for all three of the singer-songwriters here, they had a lot more success up to 2010, the year of this concert, than in the years since then. But at least at the time of this concert they were all doing very well.

As is typical for the episodes of this show, the three of them came together for the last song. They chose to sing "Morning of My Life," a well-known early Bee Gees song, even though it never was a big hit.

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and seven minutes long.

KT Tunstall - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 5-6-2006

Here's another episode of the excellent "PBS Soundstage" TV show. This one stars singer-songwriter KT Tunstall.

Tunstall had a massive debut album in 2004. "Eye to the Telescope" sold nearly five million copies worldwide. So her popularity was still soaring at the time of this concert in 2006. Her next album wouldn't be released until 2007, so this mostly consists of songs from that debut album.

Unfortunately, the popularity of her debut wasn't sustained. But I think she's put out quality music all along.

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is 54 minutes long.

KT Tunstall - Cover Songs, Volume 6: 2020

A while back, I posted five albums of KT Tunstall playing cover songs, from the start of her career in 2005 to 2019. But time moves on, and now I finally have enough material for an album from 2020. May she keep performing new covers, so I'll have material for more albums in this series.

As I've mentioned with previous albums in this series, Tunstall grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, and often plays cover songs from those decades. Thus you get things like "The Rhythm of the Night," a 1993 hit by the Italian dance pop group Corona (yet which Tunstall does in a solo acoustic format). But she does reach further back occasionally, such as her versions of "Roadhouse Blues," "Changes," and "Twist and Shout." "Teddy Bear's Picnic" is an unexpected choice, with that song going back to 1907 (with the lyrics added in the 1930s).

Most or all of the songs here date from the coronavirus pandemic lockdown. As a result, she often played this songs in a solo acoustic format from her home, usually for radio or Internet appearances. But some songs feature a full band, such as "Roadhouse Blues." Note also that all the songs are officially unreleased, with the exception of "Hymn to Her," which comes from a various artists compilation album. That said, in my opinion, the sound quality is generally very high here, since these do generally come from radio or Internet appearances instead of concert bootlegs.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 A Little Respect - Erasure
02 Closer to Fine - Indigo Girls
03 [I've Had] The Time of My Life - Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes
04 I Don't Wanna Grow Up - Tom Waits
05 Teddy Bear's Picnic - John Walter Brannon / Jimmy Kennedy
06 The Rhythm of the Night - Corona
07 Girls Just Want to Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper
08 Roadhouse Blues - Doors
09 Changes - David Bowie
10 Twist and Shout - Isley Brothers
11 I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2
12 Hymn to Her - Pretenders

Here's the usual song list:

01 A Little Respect (KT Tunstall)
02 Closer to Fine (KT Tunstall)
03 [I've Had] The Time of My Life (KT Tunstall & Gary Barlow)
04 I Don't Wanna Grow Up (KT Tunstall & Tom Seals)
05 Teddy Bear's Picnic (KT Tunstall)
06 The Rhythm of the Night (KT Tunstall & Bob [Roberta Pia])
07 Girls Just Want to Have Fun (KT Tunstall & Mikaela Shiffrin)
08 Roadhouse Blues (KT Tunstall & Vintage Trouble)
09 Changes (KT Tunstall)
10 Twist and Shout (KT Tunstall)
11 I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (KT Tunstall with Pomplamoose)

KT Tunstall - Cover Songs, Volume 5: 2016-2019

I've posted four albums of KT Tunstall's cover songs already, out of six.  It's been a while since I've posted more from her, so here's the next one in the series.

In terms of the songs, this is very much in keeping with the previous albums in this series. As someone who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, she favors covers from those decades more than those of the 1970s and earlier, though there are some of those here too.

In terms of sourcing though, this one is a bit different. For a couple of the earlier albums in this series, nearly every song was recorded in a studio and officially released. Not so here. All but three of the songs are from bootlegs, and most of those were recorded at concerts. Around 2017 or so, she started the habit of taking requests for cover songs from her audiences and doing the songs she through she could make it through without any practice first. So the number of covers she did went up. Unfortunately, the quality tended to go down, because the odds of there being a soundboard-esque bootleg for any given concert was low.

Never fear, though. I've combated that by being very selective. I have four bonus tracks this time, because those are the ones that missed the cut. But there were many more that I didn't even include as bonus tracks, because the sound quality was lower still. So, overall, yeah, the sound quality isn't as good as the ones recorded in a studio, but they're pretty close.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 On Melancholy Hill - Gorillaz
02 Secondhand News - Fleetwood Mac
03 You Make Loving Fun - Fleetwood Mac
04 Default - Atoms for Peace
05 Kiss - Prince
06 Independent Women, Part 1 - Destiny's Child
07 It's Too Late - Carole King
08 I Won't Back Down - Tom Petty
09 The Times They Are A-Changin' - Bob Dylan
10 Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes
11 Heaven Is a Place on Earth - Belinda Carlisle
12 Gimme Some Truth - John Lennon
13 This Land Is Your Land - Woody Guthrie

Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
Faith - George Michael
Stupid Girl - Garbage
The Story - Brandi Carlile

And here's the usual song list:

01 On Melancholy Hill (KT Tunstall)
02 Secondhand News (KT Tunstall)
03 You Make Loving Fun (KT Tunstall)
04 Default (KT Tunstall)
05 Kiss (KT Tunstall)

KT Tunstall - Cover Songs, Volume 4: 2011-2016

Here's the next in my series of KT Tunstall cover songs albums. As with the others, the sound quality is excellent, and she has fun with songs from a wide variety of artists and genres.

As I've mentioned with previous albums in this series, Tunstall grew up on the music of the 1980s and 90s, so she often favors music from those decades over the 1960s and 70s, which is more common for many of the other cover album collections I've posted by other artists. There's an especially big emphasis on the 1980s here, with seven of the 11 songs from that decade. But as a sign of her range, she does songs from as early as 1932 ("Night and Day") and as late as 2003 ("Seven Nation Army").

Six of the 11 songs are officially unreleased. But don't worry, because most of those are from radio or TV appearances, and they sound just as great as the rest.

Even the bonus track songs excellent this time. The only reason I've put "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree - Seven Nation Army" is because it only partially qualifies for being a cover song. Most of it is KT Tunstall's great original hit "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree," with about a minute of "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripe near the end. So it's more of an original than a cover, in my opinion. But I figure it's interesting enough to include as a bonus track anyway.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Landslide - Fleetwood Mac
02 Merry Christmas Everyone - Shakin' Stevens
03 Sweet Dreams [Are Made of This] - Eurythmics
04 Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel
05 The Boys of Summer - Don Henley
06 Deportee [Plane Wreck at Los Gatos] - Woody Guthrie
07 Night and Day - Cole Porter / Fred Astaire
08 Should I Stay or Should I Go - Clash
09 Promised You a Miracle - Simple Minds
10 Writing to Reach You - Travis
11 State Trooper- Bruce Springsteen
Seven Nation Army - White Stripes

Here's the usual song list:

01 Landslide (KT Tunstall)
02 Merry Christmas Everyone (KT Tunstall)
03 Sweet Dreams [Are Made of This] (KT Tunstall with Dave Stewart, Vanessa Haynes & Candy Dulfer)
04 Sledgehammer (KT Tunstall)
05 The Boys of Summer (KT Tunstall)
06 Deportee [Plane Wreck at Los Gatos] (KT Tunstall)
07 Night and Day (KT Tunstall with Jools Holland)
08 Should I Stay or Should I Go (KT Tunstall)

KT Tunstall - Cover Songs, Volume 3: 2008-2011

Here's some more cover versions by KT Tunstall. As with the previous albums in this series, the songs are generally done with a full band. They also generally hew fairly close to the originals. She simply is having a fun time singing the songs she loves. But every now and then, her versions do differ a lot. The version of "Sombody to Love" here is an example of that.

Often when I put together these sorts of covers albums, there are lots of songs from the 1960s and 1970s. But not here. Tunstall grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, and most of the songs originally date from those years. There are a few exceptions though, for instance "Somebody to Love" being from the 1960s and "New York, I Love You" from the 2000s.

The sound quality for this album is very high. Half the songs are officially released and half are not. But you wouldn't know which is which. Most of the unreleased ones were recorded in the studio, with only one ("Nothing Compares 2 U") coming from a concert. But that one was recorded professionally for a French TV show.

The sound quality is so high that when I relistened to this, I decided that one song, a cover of "The Drugs Don't Work" by the Verve, didn't sound good enough to fit in with the rest. It's not that that one sounds bad at all. In fact, it's pretty good. But it just don't match the others. So it was downgraded to bonus track status.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Something to Talk About - Bonnie Raitt
02 Kiss on My List - Hall & Oates
03 Walk like an Egyptian - Bangles
04 You're the Voice - John Farnham
05 Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor
06 Because the Night - Bruce Springsteen / Patti Smith
07 New York, I Love You [But You're Bringing Me Down] - LCD Soundsystem
08 Somebody to Love - Jefferson Airplane
09 Don't You [Forget About Me] - Simple Minds
10 Close to Me - Cure

Here's the usual song list:

01 Something to Talk About (KT Tunstall & Daryl Hall)
02 Kiss on My List (Daryl Hall & KT Tunstall)
03 Walk like an Egyptian (KT Tunstall)
04 You're the Voice (KT Tunstall)
05 Nothing Compares 2 U (Teitur & KT Tunstall)
06 Because the Night (Rhythms del Mundo with KT Tunstall)
07 New York, I Love You [But You're Bringing Me Down] (KT Tunstall)

KT Tunstall - Cover Songs, Volume 2: 2007-2008

I recently posted an album of KT Tunstall's cover songs. Even though her albums are all or almost all original songs, she has a lot of fun doing covers, so I have no less than six albums in this series. Here's the next one.

All but two of the songs here are officially released. Those two ("My Sharona" and "Out of Touch") were recorded for a radio show and an Internet show respectively, so they sound just as good as the others. The vast majority of the songs are studio versions instead of live ones.

In 2007, Tunstall released a Christmas-themed EP that contained all cover songs. So this album has a lot of Christmas songs on it. I've tried to spread them out so this doesn't come off as a heavily seasonal thing. Luckily, most of the songs she chose for that were good songs that just happen to have a Christmas link to them - "2000 Miles" by the Pretenders being on a good example of that. I left off one song from that EP, "Sleigh Ride," since that was is too overtly Christmas-y for my tastes to fit into something like this.

Tunstall rarely tries to reinvent the cover songs she does. She just enjoys playing the songs she loves, and she does a very good job of it. I like her wide-ranging musical selections, and sometimes she manages to rescue good songs from obscurity.

01 I Want You Back - Jackson 5
02 Christmas [Baby Please Come Home] - Darlene Love
03 Ain't Nobody -Rufus with Chaka Khan
04 Fairytale of New York - Pogues & Kirsty MacColl
05 Let's Stick Together - Wilbert Harrison / Canned Heat
06 2000 Miles - Pretenders
07 La Vie En Rose - Edith Piaf
08 Mele Kalikimaka [Christmas in Hawaii] - Bing Crosby & the Andrews Sisters
09 My Sharona - Knack
10 The Prayer - Bloc Party
11 Lonely This Christmas - Mud
12 Out of Touch - Hall & Oates

Here's the usual song list:

01 I Want You Back (KT Tunstall)
02 Christmas [Baby Please Come Home] (KT Tunstall)
03 Ain't Nobody (KT Tunstall)
04 Fairytale of New York (KT Tunstall & Ed Harcourt)
05 Let's Stick Together (KT Tunstall)
06 2000 Miles (KT Tunstall)
07 La Vie En Rose (KT Tunstall)
08 Mele Kalikimaka [Christmas in Hawaii] (KT Tunstall)

KT Tunstall - Cover Songs, Volume 1: 2005-2006

Some months back, I posted a couple of acoustic home concerts that KT Tunstall did in 2020. I wasn't that big of a fan of hers, but I liked those concerts so much that I've started to get more into her music. One thing I've discovered is that she's done a lot of fun cover versions, and the vast majority haven't been officially released by her. So I've made a series of cover songs albums. This is the first, but I have a total of six currently planned.

Tunstall has a wide range of musical tastes. This can be seen symbolically with the first two songs here: "Get Ur Freak On" - a hip hop hit from 2001 with Indian elements in it, and "Ain't Misbehavin'" - a Fats Waller jazz or swing song from the 1920s! She takes all these different styles and adds her own stamp to it.

Most of the songs on this album (and in this series) are done with a full band, though she occasionally does a solo acoustic version.

Seven of the songs here have been officially released, and five have not. The officially released ones generally are from obscure releases. Only one, the cover of "Golden Age," appears on one of her albums ("Acoustic Extravaganza"). The sound quality is excellent for all the songs, whether they're officially released or not.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Get Ur Freak On - Missy Elliott
02 Ain't Misbehavin' - Fats Waller
03 Simple Twist of Fate - Bob Dylan
04 This Wheel's on Fire - Bob Dylan
05 Tangled Up in Blue - Bob Dylan
06 Teenage Kicks - Undertones
07 My Doorbell - White Stripes
08 You to Me Are Everything - Real Thing
09 Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead
10 Darkness on the Face of the Earth - Willie Nelson
11 Lazarus - Sophie Solomon
12 Golden Age - Beck

Here's the usual song list:

01 Get Ur Freak On (KT Tunstall)
02 Ain't Misbehavin' (KT Tunstall with Jools Holland)
03 Simple Twist of Fate (KT Tunstall)
04 This Wheel's on Fire (KT Tunstall & Billy Bragg)
05 Tangled Up in Blue (KT Tunstall)
06 Teenage Kicks (KT Tunstall)
07 My Doorbell (KT Tunstall)
08 You to Me Are Everything (KT Tunstall)

KT Tunstall - At Home with Olivia, Home Concert, Los Angeles, CA, 5-10-2020

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a recent KT Tunstall home concert. I did that even though I had to admit that I wasn't that familiar with her songs beyond those on her 2007 debut album. Well, I was so impressed by her concert that I've gone back and listen to more of her records, and I like what I hear. I think she's very underrated.

So I'm posting this, which is a more recent home concert. Tunstall has been unusually busy during the pandemic lockdown, but that's mostly playing a couple of songs here and there for various radio or Internet shows. There are only two instances I know of so far where she's played a significantly longer home concert. I posted the first one already, and this is the second.

I wouldn't post this except for the fact that the song list is significantly different. Not surprisingly, she played her two big hits, "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" and "Suddenly I See," in both shows. But other than that, the only song played in both is "Heal Over." I think that's a sign of the depth of her musical discography already in her career.

All the songs in the show are originals. However, as I did with the last show, I've added a cover song to sweeten the pot for those not familiar with her material. I've put "The Boys of Summer," the 1980s Don Henley classic, at the start. It's from another recent home concert, but one where she only played a song or two for a radio show.

I found two songs from a different home concert performance she did that I thought were worth adding here, since I didn't have any better place to put them. One is an original song about staying safe during the coronavirus pandemic called "Wash Ya Hands." I think it's a fun song that deserves to be a hit, and yet gets its serious message across at the same time. The other, "The Rhythm of the Night," is a cover of a 1983 hit song by the Italian dance group Corona. It's totally transformed by Tunstall playing it in solo acoustic format.

By the way, regarding the title "At Home with Olivia," there's no person named Olivia playing on this recording. Apparently, that's the name of a cooking show that has been putting on a series of musical home concerts during the pandemic.

Thanks to the two extra songs at the beginning, and two more at the end, the album as a whole is now 58 minutes long.

01 talk (KT Tunstall)
02 Boys of Summer (KT Tunstall)

Various Artists - Can't Be Here Now - Mother's Day Special Home Concert, 5-10-2020

In late March 2020, singer songwriter Billy Bragg wrote a song about the difficulty of being separated from loved ones during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown. He called it "Can't Be There Today," and posted it on YouTube. From that, he came up with the idea to have a special home concert on Mother's Day, May 10, 2020, to help people celebrate that day in these weird times. The concert is named "Can't Be Here Now" as a play on that song title.

A lot of the best singer songwriter types joined in, recording one or two songs from wherever they happened to be hunkered down, and then sending in their videos. So I think this is unique in my music collection in that this "concert" has no fixed single location. Some of the musicians spoke a little bit before or after their songs, and others didn't. Most of the songs have some connection to a mother's day or at least a mother theme, but a few do not. It's a pretty loose gathering of performances, with no fixed rules.

No less than seven of the artists are ones that I've posted albums of here at this blog: Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rosanne Cash, the Indigo Girls, Jorma Kaukonen, Joan Osborne, KT Tunstall, and Loudon Wainwright III. There are some other big names for this type of music as well, such as Bragg, Steve Earle, Rufus Wainwright, and Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields. I have to confess that I wasn't that familiar with the others, but hopefully if you listen to this you'll discover some new artists, just as I have.

Since this is a collection of home recorded videos, the audio quality is variable. I did my best to adjust the volume and improve the mix whenever I could. The result is pretty good overall. But there were a couple of significant problems I couldn't fix. Valerie June recorded her song in the great outdoors. That looked nice on video, but late in the song a big gust of wind came along and blew on the microphone for about thirty seconds, rendering that part of the song unlistenable. Luckily, it was just a repeat of the chorus, so I was able to salvage the song by editing that part out. Some of her talking had to be cut out due to more wind.

Also, the Indigo Girls played their best known song "Closer to Fine." But the vocals of the lead vocalist Emily Saliers was way down in the mix compared to the guitar and the other vocalist Amy Ray. I couldn't do anything to fix that, so it's a rather unusual version.

The concert is nearly two hours long. If you don't like some of the artists and/or songs, you can edit your version down to just the ones you do like, and you'll probably still have a fairly lengthy album.

Oh, and by the way, I just posted the fourth of Norah Jones's home concert albums a day ago. It turns out I missed including one song and got the name of another song wrong. So if you've downloaded that one, I recommend you do it again, now that I've fixed those things.

The video of the entire concert is on YouTube, if you want to watch it as well as hear it. (Just search for key words in the title.) So I could have used screenshots from that. However, if I did that, I would have to favor some artists over others, since there's no way I could fit them all in without having them look tiny. So instead I used the playbill that was promote the show. I made some changes, including squishing the entire thing horizontally to make it fit into a square space. I also redid the names of the artists, since there were about four of them that joined in late and so didn't get mentioned. But there's all mentioned here.

KT Tunstall - Royal Albert Hall Benefit, Home Concert, Los Angeles, CA, 4-30-2020

I've owned and enjoyed KT Tunstall's 2004 debut album "Eye to the Telescope" for a long time, but I never took the time to check out her other stuff. However, I knew she's a talented songwriter with an impressive voice, so when I saw the other day that she recently did an acoustic home concert recently, I decided to give it a listen. I was so impressed that not only am I posting that concert here, but it's given me the impetus to check out her other albums.

I recommend you give this a listen as well. You probably know her from her two big hits off her debut album, "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" and "Suddenly I See." Both are undeniable classics in my opinion, and there have been too few of those in the last 20 years. But her talent runs a lot deeper than just those two songs. I suspect she's been under-promoted and mismanaged by her record company, because otherwise I can't figure why she hasn't been more successful.

Like a Richard Thompson home concert I posted recently, this was done as part of a benefit for the Royal Albert Hall in London, due to that venue running into financial trouble caused by the economic fallout of the coronavirus epidemic. But Tunstall recorded her concert from her home in Los Angeles. All the songs are originals, including one song, "Anything at All," that she hasn't released yet and had never played in public before.

Although all the songs are originals, in order to sweeten the pot for those of you who aren't that familiar with her music, I've added cover versions at the very beginning and the end. She did "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5 and "I Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty as one-off performances in the days around this concert, so I think they fit in pretty well. I moved her final few seconds of comments after the last song of the concert to after the song added at the end, to give the impression that it was all one show.

The concert is an hour and four minutes long, if you include the two added songs. She has a lot of lively banter between songs. I've kept nearly all of it, though I did edit it a bit here and there to tighten things up, removing guitar tuning and dead air and the like.

The cover art is a screenshot from the concert in question. For most of the concert, her face was covered in shadow due to the brim of her hat. I chose one of the few moments her head was tilted back so her face was well lighted.
