Various Artists - Covered: Joan Baez, Volume 2: 2017-2023 (A Fabio from Rio Guest Post)

Here's the second and last "Covered" album for Joan Baez. Like the first one, it's a guest post by Fabio from Rio.

If you want to know more, please read Fabio's notes, included in the download zip. In short, he feels Baez's songwriting has been underappreciated. As such, you don't see a lot of famous musical acts covering her songs. But just because someone isn't well known, that doesn't mean their cover version isn't good.

By the way, tracks 2 and 10 are unreleased versions. Track 2 was done in a studio without crowd noise. But for track 10, I used MVSEP to remove the cheering.

This album is 46 minutes long.

01 Honest Lullaby (Monika Akselsen)
02 Prison Trilogy [Billy Rose] (Harpeth Rising)
03 Children of the Eighties (Chyi Yu)
04 Isaac and Abraham (Cameron Skillen & Melissa DuPuy)
05 The Story of Bangladesh (Bappa Mazumder & Elita Karim)
06 Gabriel and Me (Bay Love)
07 Love Song to a Stranger (Aoife O'Donovan)
08 Saigon Bride (Melmo)
09 Michael (Randy Bowles)
10 Children and All That Jazz (Genevieve Philips)

Elton John - Cover Versions, Volume 6: 2008-2017

Here's the sixth and last album in a series of albums of cover versions by Elton John. I had started posted this series back in 2023, but I stopped for a couple of years due to problems with the copyright police. But they seem to be going easy on me lately, so I'm finally finishing off the series.

Only four of the songs here are unreleased. "Back in the U.S.S.R." and "Birthday" are from a bootleg of a joint concert John did with Billy Joel in 2009. (He's done a lot of those over the years.) Unfortunately, the sound quality of those two songs are lower than the rest, despite my best efforts to make some audio editing improvements. "Streets of Philadelphia" is from a 2013 MusiCares tribute concert to Bruce Springsteen that I've posted in full on this blog. "Gravity," a duet with Sara Bareilles, is from a 2014 concert.

Pretty much all the other songs are from John's appearances on albums by other musical acts. Check the mp3 tags for more details. The one exception is "I Love You All the Time," which was released as an A-side in 2016.

This is probably going to be the last album in this series because, rather surprisingly, I can't find any good cover versions he did after 2017. Mind you, he's done lots of songs on his studio albums, but these albums only collect covers that aren't the versions from his studio albums. If anyone knows of covers I've missed from this time period, or after, let me know and I'll probably add them in to this album.

This album is 45 minutes long.

01 Joseph, Better You than Me (Killers, Elton John & Neil Tennant)
02 Back in the U.S.S.R (Elton John & Billy Joel)
03 Birthday (Elton John & Billy Joel)
04 Snowed In at Wheeler Street (Kate Bush & Elton John)
05 Oh Well, Part 1 (2Cellos & Elton John)
06 Streets of Philadelphia (Elton John with Raphael Saadiq)
07 The Tracks of My Tears (Smokey Robinson & Elton John)
08 Gravity (Sara Bareilles & Elton John)
09 I Love You All the Time (Elton John)
10 Where Do the Guilty Go (Elton John & Frankie Miller)
11 Alone Again, Naturally (Pet Shop Boys & Elton John)

Various Artists - Covered: Neil Young, Volume 8: 2016-2020

As I write this, I’m sitting in an airplane, about to fly back to the U.S. I’m glad to see my plan to keep posting albums while on vacation has worked out.

Here’s the next album in the Neil Young “Covered” series. There are two albums to go after this one. Once more, thanks to Fabio from Rio from doing most of the heavy lifting for these albums. Here is the intro to his notes:

By the late 2010s, Neil Young's songwriting had fully entered the digital age of reinterpretation. Covers were no longer limited to traditional tribute albums or major-label releases. Many now emerged through independent recordings, Bandcamp releases, streaming platforms, and fan communities online. At the same time, a younger generation of indie-folk, Americana, and roots musicians continued to rediscover Young's catalog, often gravitating toward the emotional honesty and melodic simplicity that have always defined his best work. Meanwhile, Young himself remained active both musically and politically, releasing albums that addressed environmental and social issues while also opening vast portions of his archival material through the Neil Young Archives project. The performances collected here reflect that ecosystem: established artists, roots musicians, and independent performers revisiting both classics and deep cuts from across his remarkable career.

---

Note that Fabio wrote individual paragraphs about all the songs in this volume. To see that, please look at the Word file added to the download zip file. Thanks again to Fabio for his help putting these albums together.

Bettye LaVette - Soulville - Non-Album Tracks (2017-2023)

I've been posting a few Bettye LaVette albums lately. Here's another one. It's another collection of non-album tracks, from 2017 to 2023. This gets us caught up to current day, since I didn't find any non-album tracks worthy of inclusion since 2023.

Six of the songs here are unreleased: tracks 2, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 12. All of them are from concert bootlegs. They generally come from tribute concerts. I removed the audience cheering from all of them so they'd fit in better with the studio tracks.

Tracks 1 and 3 come from the deluxe edition of "Music from The American Epic Sessions." Track 4 is from the Todd Rundgren album "White Knight." Tracks 8 and 11 are from tribute albums. For more details, look at the mp3 tags for each song, as usual.

This album is 52 minutes long.

01 Nobody's Dirty Business (Bettye LaVette)
02 Jingle Bells - White Christmas - This Christmas (Bettye LaVette)
03 When I Woke Up This Morning (Bettye LaVette)
04 Naked and Afraid (Todd Rundgren & Bettye LaVette)
05 Person to Person (Bettye LaVette)
06 Ain't No Way (Bettye LaVette)
07 Soulville (Bettye LaVette)
08 Loser (Dave McMurray with Bettye LaVette & Bob Weir)
09 On Your Way Down (Little Feat & Bettye LaVette)
10 A Apolitical Blues - Long Distance Call (Little Feat & Bettye LaVette)
11 Call It Stormy Monday (Count Basie Orchestra with Bettye LaVette)

Bettye LaVette - Season of Change - Non-Album Tracks (2012-2017)

I recently came across a recent Bettye LaVette concert I was impressed by and plan on posting here soon. That reminded me that I've never finished posting a couple more collections of non-album tracks from her. So here's the next one.

As I've mentioned previously, LaVette has had an unusual career. She had some success in the 1960s as a soul singer. But then she struggled for a long, long time, only to have a big and prolonged career revival since the early 2000s. That revival gave her a lot of opportunities to appear in tribute concerts, on other artists' albums, and the like. This album is a mix of those sorts of things.

Tracks 6, 7, 8, and 11 are unreleased. All of them come from appearances at tribute concerts. Track 9 is a live performance too, but it comes from a deluxe edition version of one of her albums. For all these live songs, I used MVSEP to get rid of the crowd noise.

The other songs are all released, and from studio albums. The first two tracks here are actually from an EP she released, called "More Thankful, More Thoughtful." It consisted of extra songs from her 2012 album "Thankful N' Thoughtful." The rest (tracks 3, 4, 5, 10, and 12) are mostly from appearances on albums by other artists, and generally are duets.

By the way, in addition to getting this album ready for posting, at the same time, I went over her past non-album track albums and improved them. I added a song to the "Heart of Gold" collection, a duet with Joe Tex that only recently emerged on YouTube. Here's the link to that one:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2021/04/bettye-lavette-heart-of-gold-various.html

And for the album in this series previous to this one, "Change Is Gonna Come," most of the songs were unreleased live versions. I used the MVSEP program to get rid of the cheering, so they'd fit in with the other songs. I also improved the sound quality of two bonus tracks enough to add them to the main album. Here's the link to that:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2023/05/bettye-lavette-change-is-gonna-come.html

This album is 52 minutes long.

01 Long Time (Bettye LaVette)
02 Save Some Time to Dream (Bettye LaVette)
03 Most of the Time (Bettye LaVette)
04 Yours and Mine (Dynamites featuring Charles Walker & Bettye Lavette)
05 Hustlin' [In the Motor City] (Bettye LaVette)
06 I'm Only Sleeping (Bettye LaVette)
07 Watching the Wheels (Bettye LaVette)
08 I [Who Have Nothing] (Bettye LaVette)
09 Like a Rock (Bettye LaVette)
10 Make You Feel My Love (Will Porter & Bettye LaVette)

Chris Rea - BBC Sessions, Volume 9: 2004-2017

Over the past month or so (writing this in February 2026), I've posted a mini-flood of Chris Rea BBC albums. This is the last one. It's the only one in the series that's a collection of studio sessions, instead of a concert.

Originally, this was going to be Volume 10. However, at the last minute, I discovered a few extra songs from 2004 to put on this album. So that means the time range for this one begins before the 2006 concert I had previously posted at Volume 9. Thus, that one is now Volume 10. Here's the link to it, if you want to get that fix:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2026/02/chris-rea-bbc-sessions-volume-9.html

The first three songs come from an appearance on the Paul Jones Show in 2004. That's a blues-focused show. Rea's appearance on that show is a sign of how his music moved towards the blues around that time. The next five songs, tracks 4 through 8, are from the Ken Bruce Show in 2009. Tracks 9 and 10 are from "Later... with Jools Holland," also in 2009. Track 11, a cover of the rock and roll classic "Be-Bop-a-Lula," is from the Jools Holland radio show in 2015. That leaves the final three tracks, which are from the Ken Bruce Show again, in 2017. (As usual, if you want more details, check the mp3 tags for each song.)

Rea died in 2025 at the age of 74. But he suffered lots of medical issues for the last few years of his life. So the BBC had him on pretty much until he stopped performing in public.

Everything here is unreleased. The sound quality is generally excellent. There were a couple of songs with audience cheering, but I got rid of that with the help of the MVSEP program. One song, "Somewhere Between Highway 61 and 49," gave me more trouble. For some reason, there was a tremendous amount of pops and crackles on it, especially during the first minute. I did all I could to get rid of it. I ran the song through the MVSEP program four times, which is something I never do for a song. Each time, I got rid of more of noise. That's why that one song has "[Edit]" in its title. But still, some stubbornly remains, especially in the first twenty seconds or so.

Note also the song "Come So Far, Yet Still So Far to Go" appears twice. I tried to move the two versions as far apart as possible while still keeping everything in chronological order by year.

This album is 56 minutes long.

01 Blue Street (Chris Rea)
02 The Beat Goes On (Chris Rea)
03 Long Is the Time, Hard Is the Road (Chris Rea)
04 Come So Far, Yet Still So Far to Go (Chris Rea)
05 The Road to Hell I and II (Chris Rea)
06 On the Beach (Chris Rea)
07 Josephine (Chris Rea)
08 Let's Dance (Chris Rea)
09 Somewhere Between Highway 61 and 49 [Edit] (Chris Rea)
10 Come So Far, Yet Still So Far to Go (Chris Rea)
11 Be-Bop-a-Lula (Chris Rea)
12 Stainsby Girls (Chris Rea)
13 Two Lost Souls (Chris Rea)
14 Ain't No Sunshine (Chris Rea)

Nicki Bluhm & the Gramblers - The Van Sessions, Part 3 (2013-2017)

Way back in 2019, I posted two albums I made of the band Nicki Bluhm and Gramblers performing cover songs. They got some media attention for a few years through the gimmick of recording cover songs while the played inside a van driving down the road. For reasons I'll explain, I've gone back and made a third album of their van sessions. I also completely overhauled and added to the two albums I'd made already.

The one problem with these songs recorded in a van was that they were... genuinely recorded in a van! That meant a lot of ambient noise, such as the sound of gear shifts and nearby traffic. When I posted some songs back in 2019, I tried to clean that up as best I could, but there wasn't much I could do, given the tools available at the time. But recently I discovered a relatively new tool for the MVSEP program called "denoise." It does a fantastic job of reducing hiss and other noise without damaging the music. One of the first thoughts I had when I started that was that I could finally get rid of the hiss on the two albums I'd made by this band. But then it occurred to me I could probably fix more songs they did that had even more hiss. There were some I had discarded because the hiss problem was too much.

So I went back to their old videos posted on YouTube and downloaded the songs I had previously skipped. To my delight, when I tried using the denoise function on them, all that hiss disappeared, even on the extreme cases! I swear, what audio editing technology can do these days is like magic. I found enough material for a third album, as well as drastically improving the sound quality for the songs I'd posted already.

Note however that I just redid the other two albums at the same time I'm posting this, and the new songs are scattered over all three albums. Eight out of 14 songs on this album are new.  But also, six out of 16 songs on Volume 1 are new, and four out of 15 songs on Volume 2 are new. So if you like this, you really should redownload the other two volumes as well. Between the new songs and the de-hissed old songs those albums are drastically improved. Here are the links:

Volume 1:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2019/04/nicki-bluhm-gramblers-van-sessions-part.html

Volume 2:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2019/04/nicki-bluhm-gramblers-van-sessions-part_16.html

Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers were in existence from about 2010 to 2018. Nicki Bluhm has continued with a successful solo career, but she hasn't done anything like the van sessions. So this focuses just on the Gramblers time period. Even with the Gramblers, the actually van sessions started strong in 2011 and 2013, and then slowly trailed off. On this album, tracks 2, 4, 5, 10, 12, and 13 were actually recorded inside their van. The rest are from various sources. Tracks 1, 11, and 14 are from concerts. (I removed the applause from those.) The others are from webcasts and radio sessions and things of that nature, without an audience. Check out the mp3 tags for the exact details.

This album is 54 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original musical acts for each song:

01 Somebody to Love - Jefferson Airplane
02 Lido Shuffle - Boz Scaggs
03 In the Mountains - Sarah Siskind
04 Dire Wolf - Grateful Dead
05 I Wanna Dance with Somebody - Whitney Houston

Katharine McPhee with Eric Benet - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 10-10-2017

Here's another episode of the "PBS Soundstage" TV show, from 2017. This one stars Katharine McPhee with Eric Benet as a guest star.

I have to admit that I'd never heard of McPhee before putting this album together. She rose to fame by making it to the final round in the "American Idol" TV show in 2005. That led to a record contract. That didn't lead to a huge music career, but she did have some success. In particular, her self-titled debut album did pretty well, reaching Number Two on the U.S. album chart in 2007. And she had two Top Forty singles around that time, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "Over It."

She's also had success as an actress and a model. Here's here Wikipedia entry if you want to know more about her:

Katharine McPhee - Wikipedia

What I like about this album, and the reason I'm posting it here, is because it consists entirely of covers, usually of classics from the "Great American Songbook." In November 2017, one month after this concert, she released the album "I Fall in Love Too Easily," consisting entirely of covers of these types of songs. So she stuck to that style, not even performing her 2007 hit "Over It." She has a nice voice, and it's hard to go wrong with these kinds of songs.

I similarly knew nothing about Eric Benet before posting this album. His role is pretty minor here, singing duets with McPhee on two songs. He put out a couple of albums in the late 1990s that did well, but his sales declined after that. Here's the Wikipedia entry about him:

Eric Benét discography - Wikipedia

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is 56 minutes long.

01 Blame It on My Youth - You Make Me Feel So Young (Katharine McPhee)
02 I'll Be Seeing You - Some Other Time (Katharine McPhee)
03 Night and Day (Katharine McPhee)
04 I Fall in Love Too Easily (Katharine McPhee)
05 Sooner or Later (Katharine McPhee)
06 It Never Entered My Mind (Katharine McPhee)
07 talk (Katharine McPhee)
08 Everything Must Change (Katharine McPhee & Eric Benet)
09 The Last Time (Katharine McPhee & Eric Benet)
10 I've Grown Accustomed to His Face (Katharine McPhee)
11 Who Can I Turn To (Katharine McPhee)
12 All the Way (Katharine McPhee)
13 Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Katharine McPhee)

Various Artists - Covered: Antonio Carlos Jobim, Volume 3: 2012-2024 (A Fabio from Rio Guest Post)

Here is the third and final "Covered" album celebrating the songwriting of Antonio Carlos Jobim.

I didn't get around to writing about the basics of Jobim's life with the first two volumes in this series, so let me do that now. Jobim was born in 1927 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the 1940s, he made a living playing piano in bars and nightclubs in Rio. His first song to be recorded by someone happened in 1953. But he didn't have significant success until 1958, when Joao Gilberto recorded what would become one of his most famous songs, "Desafinado (Out of Tune)." Then, in 1964, he really hit it big with "The Girl from Ipanema." A version of that song by Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto reached the Top Five in the U.S. singles chart. But its success went way beyond that. In fact, it has become the second most recorded song of all time, behind only "Yesterday" by the Beatles.

This song led many people to discover not only other songs written by Jobim, but songs from Brazil in general, especially bossa nova music. For a couple of years, there was a sort of bossa nova craze in Western countries, especially in the jazz world. Jazz musicians in particular fell in love with Jobim's songs, because they were both musically complicated and interesting while being tuneful and catchy. Many of his songs became standards. Looking at the website secondhandsongs.com in 2025, which tallies cover versions, I count 34 songs written or co-written by Jobim that have been covered over 100 times. It may not sound like a lot, but that's a crazy amount. By comparison, only 18 songs by Bob Dylan have been covered over 100 times. Or consider Carole King, one of the most successful songwriters of all time. Only eight of her songs have been covered over 100 times.

Jobim released several dozen albums, with about half of them being collaborations with other famous musicians. He often collaborated with singers, since he wasn't much of a singer himself. His own albums didn't sell that well, but his collaboration albums often did. Overall, he had much more success with other musicians covering his songs.

Here's his Wikipedia entry, if you want to know more:

Antônio Carlos Jobim - Wikipedia

He died in 1994 at the age of 67. As a result, all of the songs here are from well after his death. Most of them were written in the 1950s to 1970s, and it just so happens these are the versions that Fabio from Rio and I liked the best (since all three of these albums were put together by Fabio and myself). As with the two previous volumes in the series, the focus was on songs sung in English, when in fact there are even more covers of his songs in other languages, especially Portuguese, which is spoken in his home country of Brazil.

Thanks again to Fabio of Rio for his helping putting this Jobim albums together. I already had plans to make Covered albums from Jobim on my own. But they wouldn't have been nearly as good without Fabio's input, since he's much more familiar with this type of music than I am.

This album is 46 minutes long.

01 I Love You [Eu Te Amo] (Alessandra Maestrini)
02 Somewhere in the Hills [O Morro Nao Tem Vez] (Lisa Sanchez & Jon Eriksen Quartet)
03 Forever Green [Sempre Verde] (Trudy Kerr)
04 Photograph [Fotografia] (Stephanie Patton)
05 Little Bird [Passarim] (Daniel Vincke)
06 Once I Loved [O Amor em Paz] (Baila Nova)
07 This Happy Madness [Estrada Branca] (Delicatessen)
08 Useless Landscape [Inutil Paisagem] (Emma Pask)
09 Meditation [Meditacao] (Nicole Magolie)
10 One Note Samba [Samba de Uma Nota So] (Arpi Alto)

The cover photo is cropped from a photo of Jobim with Sting. I don't know when it was taken, but I'd guess it's from the 1990s, because the two of them collaborated on a song around then which was released in 1996. The original version was black and white, but I colorized it with the help of the Kolorize program.

Various Artists - Covered: Hank Williams, Volume 2: 1995-2017

Here's the second part to the "Covered" series about country music legend Hank Williams.

As I said in my write-up for Volume 1, I wanted to make these albums accessible to more than just country music fans. So that's why I mostly chose covers from recent decades, and by the likes of Beck, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Norah Jones, and so on.

The vast majority of these were hits when Williams did them before his death in 1953. While there were a lot of hit cover versions of his songs, these generally were not hits. As I just mentioned, I was striving to get away from country versions, and those were most of the hit versions.

As always with these "Covered" albums, the songs are in loose chronological order, based on the year of release. And, as always, check the mp3 tags for the details.

This album is 45 minutes long.

01 I'm a Long Gone Daddy (The The)
02 I Can't Help It [If I'm Still in Love with You] (Cat Power)
03 [I Heard That] Lonesome Whistle (Beck)
04 I Can't Get You Off of My Mind (Bob Dylan)
05 Alone and Forsaken (Emmylou Harris & Mark Knopfler)
06 You're Gonna Change [Or I'm Gonna Leave] (Tom Petty)
07 Cold, Cold Heart (Norah Jones)
08 Lost Highway (Lee Rocker)
09 Ramblin' Woman (Cat Power)
10 Take These Chains from My Heart (Rosanne Cash)
11 A House of Gold (Patty Griffin)
12 How Many Times Have You Broken My Heart (Norah Jones)
13 Mansion on the Hill (Willie Nelson)

Various Artists - Covered: Jackie DeShannon: 1961-2017

Here's another entry in my "Covered" series highlighting the careers of great songwriters. This time, it's Jackie DeShannon.

DeShannon is more famous as a performer than a songwriter. But she's in a rather strange position, because she had some big hits as a performer that she didn't write, especially "What the World Needs Now Is Love," and some big hits as a songwriter for other musical acts, especially "When You Walk in the Room" and "Betty Davis Eyes." The one big hit she both wrote and had the hit performance was "Put a Little Love in Your Heart."

DeShannon was born in rural Kentucky to parents who were farmers but also very musically inclined. So her music career began remarkably early. She was singing songs on local radio stations by the time she was six years old, and hosting her own radio show and making occasional local TV appearances by the time she was eleven! She signed her first record contract at the age of 16, and began putting out singles, but without much success at first.

At the time, successful female songwriters were very few and far between. But in 1960 she had enough success to get connected to another female songwriter, Sharon Sheeley. Together, they co-wrote DeShannon's first hit song, "Dum Dum" by Brenda Lee. They also wrote some other hit songs over the next couple of years, like "Heart in Hand" and "Breakaway."

In 1963, she co-wrote the song "Needles and Pins" with Jack Nitzsche and Sonny Bono. She didn't get songwriting credit on it, but she claims she was a full participant in its creation. I believe her. It was common for aspiring musicians to get screwed out of songwriting credits in those days (and probably still today), and I'll bet that went double for women. At any rate, her version of the song was the first one released. It barely made the U.S. singles charts, but went all the way to Number One in Canada. Instead, the Searchers had a Number One hit with it some months later. That suggested there was a problem with her record company, not with her version. Later in 1963, she wrote "When You Walk in the Room" by herself. Again, her version went nowhere and the Searchers had a bit hit with it.

In 1965, she finally had a big hit as a performer, with "What the World Needs Now Is Love," written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. From that point on, she almost had two music careers at once. She put out many albums and singles, often with her singing cover songs. At the same time though, she wrote successful songs for other musical acts that she usually never released herself. Examples would be "Come and Stay with Me," a hit she wrote for Marianne Faithfull, and "Don't Doubt Yourself, Babe," which she wrote for the Byrds.

She wrote hundreds of songs in many musical genres, and made professional sounding demos of them to give to other musicians. Decades later, several albums of these demos have been released. I think if she would have focused on putting on these songs she wrote herself, she would have had a much more successful performing career. It seems to me though that her record company was more interested in her songwriting, so they didn't encourage that.

In 1969, she had another huge hit with "Put a Little Love in Your Heart," which she co-wrote. It reached the Top Five in the U.S. singles chart. After that, musical trends were changing. There was much more of a focus on singers writing their own songs. For instance, Carole King made the transition from writing hits for others to performing her own hit songs. DeShannon made a similar transition, putting out many albums in the 1970s which mostly consisted of her own songs. Again though, in my opinion, her record companies badly bungled her career. Archival releases decades later show dozens of really good songs she wrote and recorded that weren't released at the time.

Her performing career slowly wound down. In 1978, she stopped putting out albums. She would only release two more much later, in 2000 and 2011. She also never really toured much. She probably didn't need to, with all the money she made from songwriting. In 1974, one of her albums contained a song she co-wrote, "Betty Davis Eyes." It didn't get any attention at the time, and wasn't released as a single. But in 1981, Kim Carnes had a massive hit with it. It went to Number One in the U.S., and was the best selling song of the year.

For this album, I've concentrated entirely on cover versions, with not even a single song performed by DeShannon. I've already posted a couple of albums by her at this blog, and I'll probably post more in the future, so this isn't the place for more of that. Most of these are the original versions, often the hit versions. But I made some exceptions, especially when I had to choose versions other than the DeShannon ones, for instance with "Put a Little Love in Your Heart."

Here's her Wikipedia page if you want to know more:

Jackie DeShannon - Wikipedia

An interesting fact I just saw on that page is that the Led Zeppelin song "Tangerine" was actually written by Jimmy Page about DeShannon. The two of them dated around 1965 when Page was a session guitarist.

Ron Sexsmith - Reasons to Believe, Volume 8: 2016-2023

Back in early 2024, I started posting this series of non-album tracks by Ron Sexsmith. This was the idea of a musical associate, Pete the Greek, and I wouldn't have done it without his instigation and continual help. Finally, after a year and a half, the series comes to an end with this eighth volume. (Or at least it's ending until Sexsmith puts out another albums' worth of stray tracks, but that could take years.)

This album is a fairly even split between released and unreleased songs. The released ones are tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 10 and 11. One of those, "Flowers All Along the Pathway," is a bonus track from the Sexsmith album "The Vivian Line." Most of the rest are appearances on albums by other musical acts, or on various artists compilations.

That leaves the unreleased songs, which are the remaining six. These are all from concerts, home concerts, or radio shows. For the ones that had audience applause, I got rid of that using the MVSEP program to help them fit in with the other songs without applause.

Thanks again to Pete the Greek for all his help with this series, and sorry it took so long to post it all.

This album is 49 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Twilight of the Season - Hidden Cameras with Ron Sexsmith

Various Artists - Songs in the Key of Brian - Remembering Brian Wilson (1975-2021) (A Fabio from Rio Guest Post)

One of the all-time great musical geniuses, Brian Wilson, died a few days ago, on June 11, 2025. He was 82 years old. I wanted to post something to mark his passing. Luckily, I've recently been collaborating with a new musical friend, who goes by the name Fabio from Rio. He's a big fan of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, and came up with the idea of creating an album consisting entirely of songs about Brian Wilson. So that's what this is. I gave him free reign, and only helped him some with suggestions on song selection.

I would have never come up with the idea for this album, because I had no idea that there would be enough songs about Brian Wilson to make up an entire album. I knew of the song "Brian Wilson" by Barenaked Ladies, since that was a hit back in the 1990s, but that was about it. But Fabio must be a really big fan, because he found so many songs that we had to cut some out to keep the album from getting too long.

The album starts with a rare demo written and sung by Wilson himself. It also ends with two more written and sung by him, including a rare live version of "Love and Mercy." Fabio explained the reasoning for this in an email, which I liked. I'll just paste in his explanation here:

"The Wilson tunes are bookends, as they serve to introduce and close the 'main event' (all the tracks written to him or about him) while bringing a personal Brian touch to the collection. The first song, a 1975, demo works as a prelude (acknowledging Brian's fragility and strength both simultaneously contained in his voice), 'The Last Song' is the epilogue, and 'Love and Mercy' is a coda."

Regarding the rest of the songs, what Fabio calls the "main event," tracks 2 through 13, are basically divided into two parts. Tracks 2 through 8 are direct tributes to Brian. That's obvious by their titles, but it's not just that: the lyrics and musical style ooze reference and admiration for the man. That's followed by tracks 9 through 13, which are indirect tributes to Brian, or direct tributes to things related to him (the Beach Boys, his health shop, girls, his genius, family), all mentioning him either in the title or lyrics.

So, a big thanks to Fabio from Rio for coming up with the idea for this album and then finding and selecting the songs. As you could guess from the name, he's Brazilian, and hopefully in the future he'll be able to assist in sharing more music from Brazil. I like a lot of music from Brazil, despite not speaking Portuguese at all. I haven't really shared any music from Brazil until now, because I don't have worthy rarities. But he does, so look forward to that in the future. He also has some other plans, including creating one or more albums as a further tribute to Wilson that will consist of songs in a Beach Boys style composed by other musical acts.

Fabio has also taped a great number of concerts in Brazil. You can find some of them on his YouTube page, here:

John Fogerty - Weeping in the Promised Land - Non-Album Tracks (2013-2022)

I recently got a request from a commenter to post more of my non-album track albums by John Fogerty. I only have one more by him before we get to the present day, more or less. So here it is. (And by the way, I still have lots of these stray track albums to post by various musical acts, but they've been on the backburner compared to BBC albums and other things recently.)

In 2013, the year of the first song in this album, Fogerty was 68 years old. In 2022, the year of the last song in this album, he was 77 years old. As I write this in 2025, he still has a strong voice and plays lead guitar very well, but it's obvious his songwriting creativity has slowed way down. He hasn't released an album of new original songs since 2007. So the songs here mostly consist of cover versions, plus acoustic versions of songs from earlier in his career, with only a couple new originals ("The Holy Grail" and "Weeping in the Promised Land").

The first song, "Sharp Dressed Man," is a ZZ Top song done with Billy Gibbons, the lead vocalist and lead guitarist in ZZ Top. Both Fogerty and Gibbons sang and played lead guitar on it. It's unreleased, from a bootleg. "New Orleans" is a cover of a 1960s hit performed in concert for a Dr. John tribute album. "Give Peace a Chance" and "In My Life" are John Lennon songs done for a Lennon tribute concert in 2015. They come from an official album of highlights of that concert. Tracks 5, 6, 11, and 12 are unreleased acoustic versions of hits Fogerty had earlier in his career, mostly from when he a member of Creedence Clearwater Revival. They're from radio or Internet shows. "Long as I Can See the Light" is particularly interesting since it was played on piano instead of guitar as usual.

"Love and War" is a song performed with country star Brad Paisley from his 2017 album, also called "Love and War." "I Won't Back Down" is a cover of the classic Tom Petty song. This is from an concert bootleg, and the sound quality is a little poorer than the other songs. "The Holy Grail" is a single from 2018, and "Weeping in the Promised Land" is a single from 2021.

"With a Little Help from My Friends" is a cover of the Beatles song from the 2019 official live album "50 Year Trip: Live at Red Rocks." However, it is done in the same style as Joe Cocker's famous hit cover version. "Walk, Don't Run," is a cover on the famous instrumental hit by the Ventures. Fogerty only performed it once in concert, on January 22, 2022, because it was done in honor of the lead guitarist for the Ventures, Don Wilson, who died earlier in the day. Finally, "The City of New Orleans" is yet another cover song of a classic, done from a various artists collection of train songs in 2022.

This album is 49 minutes long.

01 Sharp Dressed Man (John Fogerty & Billy Gibbons)
02 New Orleans (John Fogerty)
03 Give Peace a Chance (John Fogerty)

Manhattan Transfer & Take 6 - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 5-31-2017

Here's another episode of the "PBS Soundstage" TV show. The one I posted earlier today had two acts (Tom Waits and Mose Allison) but no overlap on stage. This is just the opposite, with the two acts performing together most of the time.

The Manhattan Transfer and Take 6 are a couple of the biggest names when it comes to vocal jazz groups. By the time of this concert in 2017, the Manhattan Transfer had a long history. They were formed in 1969 and had some hits in the 1970s and 80s. They kept going with a largely unchanged line-up until the 2010s, when deaths started to take a toll. They held their final concert in 2023. By contrast, Take 6 is younger, with their debut album being released in 1988. They're also an all-black group, and have more of a focus on gospel and acappella. But there was a lot of overlap with musical styles, leading the two groups to start touring and performing together since about 2011.

This concert is longer than usual because it was released as a DVD called "The Summit." That also means the sound quality is excellent. However, I suspect the banter between songs was removed, because there's almost none of that on this recording. I didn't attempt to figure out who exactly was singing on which song (since I often couldn't tell), so instead I credited both groups for all the songs.

This album is an hour and 12 minutes long.

01 Mean Joe [Killer Joe] (Manhattan Transfer & Take 6)
02 Straighten Up and Fly Right (Manhattan Transfer & Take 6)
03 Tuxedo Junction (Manhattan Transfer & Take 6)
04 Candy (Manhattan Transfer & Take 6)
05 It's Good Enough to Keep [Airmail Special] (Manhattan Transfer & Take 6)

07 I've Got Life (Manhattan Transfer & Take 6)
08 Spread Love (Manhattan Transfer & Take 6)
09 Happy (Manhattan Transfer & Take 6)
10 Like Someone in Love (Manhattan Transfer & Take 6)
11 Twilight Zone - Twilight Tone (Manhattan Transfer & Take 6)
12 Gold Mine (Manhattan Transfer & Take 6)

Kenny Loggins & Friends - PBS Soundstage, WTTW Studios, Chicago, IL, 2-2-2017

Here's an extra big "PBS Soundstage" episodes, by Kenny Loggins, from 2017. The vast majority of the show episodes are a little less than an hour long. But this one is over two hours long!

This concert is sort of the ultimate Kenny Loggins concert encapsulating his entire career, because he brought in many key guests. The most important guest was Jim Messina, his partner in the successful Loggins and Messina duo in the 1970s. They performed eight Loggins and Messina songs in the middle of the concert, resulting in sort of a mini-concert inside the bigger concert that lasted almost 40 minutes. Another key guest is Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers. Loggins and McDonald wrote some big hits together, including the Number One "What a Fool Believes."

But there are many more guests. For instance, David Foster, a producer who also has been a very successful songwriter. Another is Thundercat, a bassist who plays all sorts of music from funk to jazz, but has a soft spot for "yacht rock," and wrote a song with Loggins and McDonald. In 2013 and 2015, Loggins released albums by a new country band he was a part of, called the Blue Sky Riders. He played two songs here with them. And one member of that band, Georgia Middleman, also sang a duet with him, "Whenever I Call You 'Friend.'" Finally, Loggins sang another song with his daughter, Hana Aluna Loggins. He also was backed by the vocal group Six Appeal on another song. So the concert is chock-a-block with guests, yet it's so long that he did a bunch of songs without guests as well.

The reason this is so long is that a version of it was released on both CD and DVD, so that wasn't limited by the one-hour-long limit of the TV show. But it turns out there were a lot of differences between the CD and DVD. There were some song differences, different song order, and sometime banter included between songs and sometimes not. So I went through both versions, included everything, and put the songs in the correct order. In my opinion, this is the "ultimate" version, better than either the CD or DVD versions.

This album is two hours and 14 minutes long.

Various Artists - PBS Soundstage, The Rocky Mountain Way, Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre, Greenwood Village, CO, 8-13-2017

Here's a rather strange episode of PBS Soundstage." Occasionally, that TV show would just broadcast highlights of concerts that were happening anyway. For instance, in 2003, one episode of the show consisted of highlights from that year's Farm Aid benefit concert, and in 2016 they broadcast highlights of a tribute concert for George Harrison, called GeorgeFest.

This another case like that. Weirdly, the concert was for the Colorado Music Hall of Fame. That year, they were inducting Joe Walsh's early 1970s band, Barnstorm, and Dan Fogelberg, and a couple of others. But really, it was basically a tribute to Fogelberg, who died in 2007. Walsh did play a few songs with Barnstorm for the first time in ages, but even that was kind of a Fogelberg tribute, since he was friends with Fogelberg and produced one of his albums.

What we have here consists only of the highlights that made it on the Soundstage TV show. Other songs were played, including by some other musical acts, but I couldn't find them. On this recording, Joe Walsh started out playing three of his songs from his early 1970s Barnstorm era. Then the rest of the concert consisted of different musical acts performing Fogelberg songs. Fool's Gold is the name of Fogelberg's long-time backing back. Johnnyswim is a rather obscure married vocal duo. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Richie Furay (formerly of Buffalo Springfield and Poco) apparently played one or more of their own songs earlier in the concert. But all we have is them performing together on a Fogelberg song. Then country star Vince Gill and Christian pop star Amy Grant sang a Fogelberg song together. They're connected due to being married since 2000.

The biggest name of the evening was saved for last: Garth Brooks. Whether one likes it or not, he's one of the best selling musical acts of all time. It turns out he's also a huge fan of Dan Fogelberg's music. He was introduced by Fogelberg's widow and then sang one Fogelberg song, "Phoenix." The concert ended with one last Fogelberg song, in which all their earlier performers joined Brooks on stage for the song.

I read an article discussing some controversy about this concert, because some unscrupulous local promoter billed the concert soley as a Garth Brooks one, driving up ticket prices. Some fans were very disappointed when it turned out he only had a small role to play, despite there being other big names too, like Joe Walsh. But apparently that promoter had nothing to do with the people who actually arranged and put on the concert.

I had a pretty difficult time editing this one. This was one of those occasional episodes where some editor thought it was a smart idea to have voiceovers over parts of the songs, especially over instrumental solos. I was able to cut out a bunch of stuff that wasn't from the actual concert between songs, like interview segments. As for the voiceovers during songs, luckily they kept enough of the music that I was able to erase the voices and keep the underlying music, using the UVR5 program. However, there was some damage to the music in those songs, the ones with "[Edit]" in their titles.

Also, this is yet another episode of this show where the best sounding recording turned out to be a video file. So I converted that to audio and broke it into mp3s. (And by the way, this episode isn't listed in the Wikipedia page's list of all the Soundstage episodes, but I know it was such an episode because I watched the video of it, complete with Soundstage graphics. The episode title, "The Rocky Mountain Way," is the name Soundstage gave the concert, not the actual concert name used at the time.)

This unreleased album is 56 minutes long.

Various Artists - Covered: Stevie Wonder, Volume 7: 2005-2018

Here is the seventh and last volume of Stevie Wonder's "Covered" series. Just as a reminder, like all the "Covered" albums I post, the emphasis is on the songwriting. So these are all songs written or co-written by Wonder, but performed by others.

By the time period of this album, 2005 to 2018, Wonder's songwriting had slowed way down. In fact, writing this in 2025, Wonder still hasn't released a new studio album since 2005. So all the songs here are covers from earlier years, especially from his golden era of the 1970s. "You Met Your Match" is the oldest song here, from 1968.

Finally, with this volume, the full scope of Wonder's songwriting genius can be seen. Some of his best songs don't show up until this volume. So all seven volumes should be seen as a whole.

Just by chance, I didn't find any covers that I liked best from after 2018. But I'm sure more great covers will emerge in the years to come.

This album is 59 minutes long.

01 I'm Going Left (Eric Clapton)
02 You Haven't Done Nothin' (Joe Cocker)
03 Village Ghetto Land (Jen Chapin)
04 You Met Your Match (Tower of Power)

Paul Weller - BBC Sessions, Volume 16: 2010-2017

Once again, it's time for another Paul Weller BBC album. I'm trying to get through these sooner rather than later so I can focus on posting albums from other musical acts. This time, it's a collection of BBC studio sessions.

All the songs here are unreleased, except for one. The second track, a cover of the Zombies classic "Time of the Season," was included on the deluxe edition of the "More Modern Classics" compilation album.

The first two songs are from different 2010 sessions. Then tracks 3 through 10 are from two sessions in 2012. Tracks 11 and 12 are from a 2015 session. Finally, the last five tracks are from three different sessions in 2017. If you want more details, as always, check the mp3 tags for each song.

This album is 53 minutes long.

Depeche Mode - BBC Sessions, Volume 4: BBC Radio 6 Music Festival, Barrowland, Glasgow, Britain, 3-26-2017

Here's another BBC concert by the band Depeche Mode. It's from 2017.

I have to confess that I lost track of Depeche Mode's music some point in the 1990s. But they're a rare band that made it big in the new wave genre in the early 1980s and kept selling well until today. They've sold over 100 million albums worldwide.

This album is unreleased. The sound quality was a bit rough for a BBC recording. I ran all the songs through the UVR5 audio editing program to boost the lead vocals relative to the instruments. That helped. But still, the crowd noise is not great, making this almost sound like an audience boot at times. There's also no banter between the songs at all.

This album is an hour and 11 minutes long.

01 talk (Depeche Mode)
02 Going Backwards (Depeche Mode)
03 So Much Love (Depeche Mode)
04 Corrupt (Depeche Mode)
05 A Pain that I'm Used To (Depeche Mode)
06 World in My Eyes (Depeche Mode)
07 Cover Me (Depeche Mode)
08 Home (Depeche Mode)
09 Where's the Revolution (Depeche Mode)
10 Barrel of a Gun (Depeche Mode)
11 Walking in My Shoes (Depeche Mode)
12 Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode)
13 Enjoy the Silence (Depeche Mode)
