Larkin Poe - Baloise Session, Event Halle, Basel, Switzerland, 11-6-2025

Here's a fairly recent concert by Larkin Poe. Well, a few months back as I write this in April 2026, at any rate. They're one of my favorite "newer" acts (by my "kids, get off my lawn" standards, hehehe), and I like to promote them by posting unreleased things from them. It's been a while since the last album I posted though. One reason is their "Tip O' the Hat" acoustic covers have slowed down to nearly nothing. Also, I haven't come across recent material with worthy sound quality. But then I came across this.

For this concert, the two Larkin Poe sisters (Rebecca Lovell and Megan Lovell) rocked out with a full band. I have to admit I prefer their acoustic style, since I like acoustic music in general. But this is a lot of fun. They certainly can do both styles very well.

This comes from the "Baloise Session" TV show. So far, I haven't really posted anything from this show. But it's been going since the 1980s, and broadcasts full concerts on various European TV stations. (As far as I can tell, it only gets to the U.S. via the Internet.) So even though this is unreleased, it's very well produced, and the sound quality is excellent. I found a video of this concert, converted it to audio, and broke it into mp3s.

I believe all the songs here are originals. In early 2025, Larkin Poe released their studio album "Bloom." A lot of the songs come from that.

And by the way, congrats to them for winning a "Best Contemporary Blues Album" Grammy Award in 2024 for their album "Blood Harmony." They've never had a hit, and they don't fit the modern pop scene so they don't get much radio play, but they've been steadily growing in popularity by being really good and constantly promoting and performing.

This album is an hour and ten minutes long.

Ringo Starr & Friends - Ringo at the Ryman, Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, TN, 1-14-2025

Just a few days ago, a commenter (Brett Allen) suggested that I post the "Ringo at the Ryman" concert, which was broadcast on TV in early 2025. I had never even heard of this, but I went to check it out. I discovered this was a really excellent suggestion, so here it is already. Thanks again to Brett for making that suggestion.

In January 2025, Ringo Starr released a studio album called "Look Up." It was the first album since his very first solo album in 1970 that had a overt country sound to it. For his supporting musicians, he picked some of my favorite currently performing musical acts, like Larkin Poe, Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, and Alison Krauss. They appeared for this concert (minus Alison Krauss), plus some other very well chosen guests, like Jack White, Sheryl Crow, and Rodney Crowell. I'm especially gratified to see the prominent role Larkin Poe had. I've been promoting their music for a long time now. It's nice to see them gradually breaking into the major leagues, despite the lack of obvious hit singles or hit albums, but just from building up a following through touring and being really talented.

Oddly, though, two famous guests only appeared on stage to help with the singalongs on the last two songs: Emmylou Harris and Brenda Lee.

Out of the four Beatles, Starr was the one most influenced by country music. This concert was meant to promote his latest studio album, for sure. But it also showed the country influence in his earlier works, including many country-influenced country songs. Starr sang and/or played drums on some of the songs. But for a majority of the songs, he let the guest stars sing lead vocals. About half of the time, he wasn't even on stage.

I was able to find a video file of this concert. Then I converted it into audio format and broke it into mp3s. So I don't think this has been shared as an audio bootleg until now. The music is all unreleased, and the sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and nine minutes long.

The cover photo is from the encore at the end of this exact concert. I can recognize some of the people, but not all of them. From left to right: unknown, Molly Tuttle, unknown, Jack White, Ringo Starr, Rodney Crowell, Brenda Lee (in front of Crowell), Rebecca Lovell and Megan Lovell of Larkin Poe, Emmylou Harris, Mickey Guyton, unknown, and Billy Strings. There were a few more people standing on each side that got cropped out, or otherwise everyone would have appeared considerably smaller.

Note also that I made some edits in Photoshop to the crowd at the bottom of the picture. In the original, a couple of people were holding their cell phones up high to take pictures, and I found that distracting. So I pasted in heads of more random people (taken from parts of the image cropped on either side) to cover up the cell phones.

Larkin Poe - Rockpalast, E-Werk, Cologne, Germany, 10-23-2023

I like posting music by Larkin Poe, because I feel they're very underrated and more people should listen to their music. But I've just checked, and it's been nearly a year since I last posted anything by them. I think that's mainly because I didn't see anything worthy of posting, especially when it comes to sound quality. But I've finally found this unreleased concert. They played a full concert for the German TV show "Rockpalast" six months ago (as I write this in March 2024), so the sound quality is excellent.

I consider Larkin Poe one of the best relatively new and young rock acts these days. But I gather it's not very easy for an act like theirs to get attention these days, with very limited opportunities for promotion via TV, movies, radio, and such. It seems that Larkin Poe has slowly been growing in popularity the hard way, mostly through self-promotion, especially lots of touring, and word of mouth. So I'm gratified to find out they've finally gotten popular enough to have an entire concert broadcast by Rockpalast, a very established German TV show that's been running since 1976. And, as you can see from the cover photo, their crowds are getting bigger and bigger. I think that's especially true in Europe.

Their most recent studio album is "Blood Harmony," released in 2022. They heavily promoted that album in this concert, playing eight of the eleven songs from it. Most everything they did were originals, with the exception of "Preachin' Blues" by Son House, "Crocodile Rock" by Elton John, and portions of the instrumentals "Jessica" by the Allman Brothers Band and "Rumble" by Link Wray.

Most of the music I've posted by them has been acoustic in nature, such as the long running "Tip O' the Hat" series of acoustic cover versions. But this is a very rocking concert with a full band, except for two acoustic numbers. I they're they're great in both modes, full-band and acoustic.

This concert is an hour and 22 minutes long.

01 Kick the Blues (Larkin Poe)
02 talk (Larkin Poe)
03 Summertime Sunset - Jessica (Larkin Poe)
04 talk (Larkin Poe)
05 Georgia Off My Mind (Larkin Poe)

Larkin Poe - Porch Pickin', Episode 3, Nashville, TN, 2-13-2021

When I recently posted a Larkin Poe album, I noted that I hadn't had anything new to post from them in a long time (at least a year) due to not having anything with worthy sound quality. But then I realized that that wasn't entirely true. In late 2020 and early 2021, they did four podcasts which they called "Porch Pickin'." They're somewhat repetitive, since they were all done to promote their 2020 album "Kindred Spirits." I think Episode 3 is the most interesting, since they did some unusual songs, so I'm posting that here.

I edited this quite a lot. There's a lot of talking between songs, and I edited that down quite a bit. There were lots of shout outs to supporters who were donating as the podcast went on, and I cut out nearly all of that. There also was some conversation that just wasn't that interesting and also got the cut.

I also edited two songs, "Heart of Gold" and "Can't Help Falling in Love." These are covers of famous songs by Neil Young and Elvis Presley respectively. In both cases, they didn't really know the songs, and were just giving them a try based on suggestions from viewers. I edited out some of their mistakes, which is why both those songs have "[Edit]" in their titles. By the way, neither of those songs were done in their "Tip O' the Hat" series (or anywhere else I know of), although the other covers here, "You Can Close Your Eyes," "Bell Bottom Blues," and "Wildflowers," are.

I'm only planning on posting this episode. However, I might be persuaded to post one or more of the other three if there's enough interest. You can watch all four of them on YouTube.

This album is 48 minutes long.

01 talk (Larkin Poe)
02 Back Down South (Larkin Poe)
03 talk (Larkin Poe)
04 Tears of Blue to Gold (Larkin Poe)
05 talk (Larkin Poe)
06 Stubborn Love (Larkin Poe)
07 talk (Larkin Poe)
08 You Can Close Your Eyes (Larkin Poe)
09 talk (Larkin Poe)
11 Bell Bottom Blues (Larkin Poe)
12 talk (Larkin Poe)
13 Heart of Gold [Edit] (Larkin Poe)
14 talk (Larkin Poe)
15 Wildflowers (Larkin Poe)

17 Can't Help Falling in Love [Edit] (Larkin Poe)
18 talk (Larkin Poe)
19 Easy Street (Larkin Poe)
20 talk (Larkin Poe)

Someone made a cover image for the YouTube videos of these, posted to the official Larkin Poe YouTube page. I took that cover image and cropped it. I also squished all the text horizontally, since the original cover was significantly wider. I added in the date as well.

Larkin Poe - Tip O' the Hat, Volume 8 - Various Cover Versions (2021-2023)

It feels like it's been a long time since I've posted any music from Larkin Poe. They've been busy, but I haven't come across anything with really high sound quality. And their acoustic cover versions series "Tip O' the Hat" seemed to have slowly petered out. But I'm glad to say that's no longer the case, with a few new songs in recent weeks, allowing me to finish off this volume. Let's hope they stay inspired to do more.

There's not much else to say. If you've been following this blog for a while, I hope you know this sisterly duo and have listened to other volumes in this series. As usual, they do acoustic versions of famous songs, although they have a few relative obscurities this time, such as "Sally's Song" (from the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack) and "O I Long to Feel Your Arms Around Me" by Father John Misty.

Note that I had previously been giving increasingly long titles to the album in this series. The last one was "Yet Additional Even Still More Further Tip O' the Hat." But that grew increasingly unweildy. To be honest, I didn't expect there to be this many volumes, and I hope there will be more to come. So I've resorted to simply "Volume 8" this time.

"Money" is a relatively simple version, with just Rebecca Lovell on guitar and no Megan Lovell slide guitar solos as usual. That's probably because it's a very rare instance of Megan singing lead vocals. It also probably is from some earlier time, but it only appeared on-line for the first time in 2023, so that's where I've put it chronologically with the others.

Here are the original artists for each song:

01 Hideaway [Instrumental] - Freddie King
02 Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel
03 Bring It on Home to Me - Sam Cooke
04 Peter Gunn Theme [Instrumental] - Henry Mancini
05 Rockin' in the Free World - Neil Young
06 Sally's Song [Instrumental] - Danny Elfman
07 Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler
08 Rich Girl - Hall & Oates
09 Start Me Up - Rolling Stones
10 The Joker - Steve Miller Band
11 Wind of Change - Scorpions
12 Money - Pink Floyd
13 O I Long to Feel Your Arms Around Me - Father John Misty
14 Never Been to Spain - Hoyt Axton / Three Dog Night
15 Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House

And here's the usual song list:

01 Hideaway [Instrumental] (Larkin Poe)
02 Sledgehammer (Larkin Poe) (Larkin Poe)
03 Bring It on Home to Me (Larkin Poe)
04 Peter Gunn Theme [Instrumental] (Larkin Poe)
05 Rockin' in the Free World (Larkin Poe)
06 Sally's Song [Instrumental] (Larkin Poe)
07 Total Eclipse of the Heart (Larkin Poe)
08 Rich Girl (Larkin Poe)
09 Start Me Up (Larkin Poe)
10 The Joker (Larkin Poe)
11 Wind of Change (Larkin Poe)
12 Money (Larkin Poe)
13 O I Long to Feel Your Arms Around Me (Larkin Poe)
14 Never Been to Spain (Larkin Poe & Mark Agnesi)
15 Don't Dream It's Over (Larkin Poe)

This album is 46 minutes long.

Larkin Poe - Shoulder to Shoulder - Non-Album Tracks (2013)

Larkin Poe recently released a new album (as I write this in December 2022). It's called "Blood Harmony," and it's very good, one of their best. To celebrate that, I want to post something else from them. Unfortunately, they've been very slow with new songs for their "Tip O' the Hat" covers series lately, so I'm still waiting to post the next album in that series. I don't have anything else worthy from 2022. So instead here's something towards the beginning of their career.

Even though the sisters Megan and Rebecca Lovell that make up Larkin Poe are relatively young, in their early thirties as I write this, their music career goes way back. Back when they were teenagers, they were in a trio with their older sister, Jessica Lovell. They had some success, but broke up in 2009 when Jessica apparently quit the music business. They renamed themselves "Larkin Poe" and carried on as a duo.

At some point, I may way to go even further back in time with them, if there's interest, but for now here's an album I've made of their best songs from 2013. That was the year before they released their first full length album, "Kin." In 2013, they released an EP with a singer-songwriter named Blair Dunlop. (He hasn't been as successful as Larkin Poe has since then.) They also released an album with a Norwegian singer-songwriter named Thom Hell. His music career has continued, but to low sales.

What I've done is taken what I consider the best of the EP, called "Killing Time," and the album, called "The Sound of the Ocean Sound," then added five more apparently original songs from the time that remain officially unreleased. About half of the songs on the EP were mainly sung by Dunlop, so I left those off, except "Sea of Faces," where the lead vocals are shared between Dunlop and Larkin Poe. Even more than half of the songs on the album were mainly sung by Hell, so I left those off too.

The songs "Goldilocks," "Voodoo Doll," "Mr. Mechanic," and "Carrot and the Stick" all are unreleased and come from concerts. I'm not entirely sure, but I'm guessing they're all originals. ("I'll Keep It with Mine" is a cover though, written by Bob Dylan.) I edited "Goldilocks" and "Voodoo Doll," using the X-Minus audio editing program to boost the lead vocals. Even so, those two still sound a bit rough. I also used X-Minus to cut out some talking over the music near the start of "Mr. Mechanic."

This album is 48 minutes long. If you've enjoyed their other albums, you should enjoy this one too.

01 Killing Time (Blair Dunlop & Larkin Poe)
02 I'll Keep It with Mine (Blair Dunlop & Larkin Poe)
03 Sea of Faces (Blair Dunlop & Larkin Poe)
04 I Belong to Love (Thom Hell & Larkin Poe)
05 Shoulder to Shoulder (Thom Hell & Larkin Poe)
06 P.S. I Love You (Thom Hell & Larkin Poe)
07 Wait for Me (Thom Hell & Larkin Poe)
08 Goldilocks [Edit] (Larkin Poe)
09 Voodoo Doll [Edit] (Larkin Poe)
10 Mr. Mechanic [Edit] (Larkin Poe)
11 Carrot and the Stick (Larkin Poe)
12 Strangler Fig (Blair Dunlop & Larkin Poe)

https://www.upload.ee/files/15261965/LarkinP_2013_ShouldrtoShoulder_atse.zip.html

For the cover, I found a photo that came with the "Killing Time" EP, even though it wasn't the cover of that. It had Blair Dunlop in the middle, but I used Photoshop to slide Megan Lovell over in front of him, making him disappear. Sorry, Blair. I took the writing of the band's name and the framing from a concert poster. Then I added the album name at the bottom.

Larkin Poe - Yet Additional Even Still More Further Tip O' the Hat - Various Cover Versions (2021)

It's that time of year again, when I get to present the next album in the long running Larkin Poe "Tip O' the Hat" series. I'm always extra psyched to post these albums, because they post a new YouTube video of a cover song every now and then, and I slowly collect them until there's enough for an album. It's satisfying to get enough songs for another album. At the rate they're going, I'm hopeful there will be enough songs for another album before 2021 is done.

As usual for this series, all the songs are done in an acoustic format. And, as usual, they do a really great job. I love their range of material. Who else would attempt an acoustic version of  "Stayin' Alive," and then follow it with a song by blues legend Robert Johnson?

By the way, Larkin Poe no longer refers to these covers as "Tip O' the Hat." Instead, they just categorize them under their blandly named "Larkin Poe Cover Channel." That's such a boring name that I plan on sticking with "Tip O' the Hat," unless they come up with something better.

Speaking of that name, with each album in this series, I've come up with an even longer album title than the last. It's been fun, but it's getting a bit preposterous and unwieldy. Do you think I should keep going, and if so, what should I call the next one? Or, if I stop, again, what should I call the next one?

Here's a list of the artists who had the original versions of each song. (In the case of "Angel Band" and "The Star Spangled Banner," one person wrote the music and then, later, another person added a new set of words to it.)

01 If I Fell - Beatles
02 Break My Stride - Matthew Wilder
03 You Can Close Your Eyes - James Taylor
04 Stayin' Alive - Bee Gees
05 Sweet Home Chicago - Robert Johnson
06 Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
07 All I Have to Do Is Dream - Everly Brothers
08 Angel Band - William Bradbury & Jefferson Hascall
09 Star Spangled Banner - John Stafford Smith & Francis Scott Key
10 Layla - Derek & the Dominos
11 Graceland - Paul Simon
12 Mama, I'm Coming Home - Ozzy Osbourne
13 Wicked Game - Chris Isaak

Here's the usual song list:

01 If I Fell (Larkin Poe)
02 Break My Stride (Larkin Poe)
03 You Can Close Your Eyes (Larkin Poe)
04 Stayin' Alive (Larkin Poe)
05 Sweet Home Chicago (Larkin Poe)
06 Wish You Were Here (Larkin Poe)
07 All I Have to Do Is Dream (Larkin Poe)
08 Angel Band (Larkin Poe)
09 Star Spangled Banner (Larkin Poe)
10 Layla (Larkin Poe)
11 Graceland (Larkin Poe)
12 Mama, I'm Coming Home (Larkin Poe)

Larkin Poe - Yet Even Still More Further Tip O' the Hat - Various Cover Versions (2020)

Running the blog, one of the very favorite album series I've put together is this one. Since 2017, the roots rock duo Larkin Poe has been periodically releasing acoustic cover versions of songs they like on YouTube. I've been gathering them as they come out and compiling them into albums. This is the sixth one so far. If you haven't given any of these a listen yet, why not get started with this one?

As with past albums in this series, Larkin Poe has chosen an interesting mix of famous songs and lesser known gems and given them their talented acoustic treatment. Compared to previous albums though, I'd say there are more lesser known gems. I prefer that, as it helps me discover some good songs I sometimes overlooked.

By the way, Larkin Poe has stopped calling these performances their "Tip O' the Hat" series. Instead, they just call it their "Cover Channel." But it will always be the "Tip O' the Hat" to me, so I plan on keep calling it that. ;)

Also by the way, the three Christmas themed songs near the end actually aren't a part of the series, but come from a video the duo did for "Fender Play Live" in December 2020. Since they're acoustic cover versions and I didn't have a better spot for them, I've included them here.

One final note. I naturally called the first album in this series "Tip O' the Hat," then the second one "More Tip O' the Hat." From there, I kept expanding the album titles until they're grown comically long and unwieldy. But I'm having fun with it. If anyone has suggestions on what I should call the next one, please let me know. It's getting harder to expand the titles without breaking grammar rules. ;)

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Who Do You Love - Bo Diddley
02 If I Needed You - Townes Van Zandt
03 Born to Be Wild -  Steppenwolf
04 Lovin' in My Baby's Eyes - Taj Mahal
05 Angie - Rolling Stones
06 Nothing Breaks like a Heart - Mark Ronson with Miley Cyrus
07 In My Life - Beatles
08 Gasoline Alley - Rod Stewart
09 White Lightning - George Jones
10 These Dreams -  Heart
11 Crocodile Rock - Elton John
12 Hellhound on My Trail - Robert Johnson
13 Kiss from a Rose - Seal
14 The Christmas Song [Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire] - Mel Torme / Nat King Cole
15 Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee
16 Santa Baby - Eartha Kitt
17 Church Street Blues - Tony Rice

And here's the usual song list:

01 Who Do You Love (Larkin Poe)

Larkin Poe - Home Concert, Nashville, TN, 11-21-2020

A couple of days ago, as I write this, Larkin Poe released their latest studio album, "Kindred Spirits." Unlike their previous albums made of originals, this one consists entirely of cover versions, done acoustically. It closely follows their great "Tip 'O the Hat" YouTube series. I've posted all of the songs from that long series as I'm able to gather them into albums. Some of the songs on their new album have been done in that series, but some are new.

Anyway, to promote their new album, Larkin Poe performed a home concert right when the album was released. The full home concert is over an hour long, and is available on YouTube under the name "Larkin Poe Release Party." I've edited that show way down for this album, because about half of that consisted of question and answer sessions that don't have much repeat listening value. If you want to hear all that, I recommend listening at YouTube.

Instead, I've cut the show down to just the music, plus the talking that is directly relevant to the songs they played. All the songs they played are on their new album but one ("Come On in My Kitchen"). But there are only six songs here from the album and the album contains 11 songs in total, so I hope this will spur you to get the album.

This concert is fairly short, at 28 minutes, but that's all there was to the concert that I felt made for a good listen.

01 talk (Larkin Poe)
02 Bell Bottom Blues (Larkin Poe)
03 talk (Larkin Poe)
04 Who Do You Love (Larkin Poe)
05 talk (Larkin Poe)
06 Nights in White Satin (Larkin Poe)

Various Artists - Tom Petty's 70th Birthday Bash, 10-23-2020

Here's something that I think is great if you're a fan of Tom Petty's music at all. And who isn't a fan of Tom Petty's music? Petty died in 2017. Had he lived, he would have turned 70 on October 20, 2020. There has been a yearly tribute concert in his hometown of Gainsville, Florida, on his birthday each year since his death. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a normal concert wasn't possible, so a virtual home concert was held instead, with different artists sending in their cover versions of Petty songs from their homes. The entire concert was well over five hours long. I've cut that down to three hours to make a really strong concert.

Somewhat strangely, this concert was broken into three different parts. The first two parts were only played on SiriusXM satellite radio. The first part consisted mostly of performances by Gainsville musicians. Most of those musicians are obscure, with no officially recorded music whatsoever. In cutting this concert from five hours down to three, I mostly cut from the first part. There are a lot of generic and unremarkable covers of Petty songs by bands you've never heard of, such as the Arts in Medicine Hospital Band and Jeff Slate's Weekend Wilburys. But there were some excellent performances by some unknowns, so I've included those. There are were a few songs by more famous artists sprinkled in early, such as one of my favorites, Larkin Poe, doing a song with Steve Ferrone of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on drums. Another Heartbreaker, guitarist Mike Campbell, also helped with a song by Starcrawler.

For the second part of the concert, a different SiriusXM DJ took over. The focus on Gainsville musicians ended. Instead, more famous musicians from all over were featured, starting with Eddie Vedder, lead vocalist of Pearl Jam. This section continued through the performance by the Raconteurs.

The final and longest section tended to feature the most famous names, though a few lesser knowns are scattered in as well. This last second was made available on video at Tom Petty's official website and other places. You can find all of it on YouTube if you want to watch and not just listen. Since this section is much more widely available, most press accounts mistakenly asserted that was the entire concert. But in fact it was only about half.

Now, let me explain some more about what I chose not to include. There were five songs performed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers scattered through the concert. Judging by appearances, they're from different years of Petty's long careers. I didn't include any of those because I felt they didn't fit the rest of the concert. They were typical versions of his famous songs, like "Refugee" and "I Need to Know." Most of the songs were done by other musicians in the concert, so including them would have increased the repetition of songs a lot.

There also were a lot of spoken word sections. I removed nearly all of those. They're nice to hear once or twice, but they don't have much replay value after that, in my opinion. I've only included the between song banter by Mike Campbell & Benmont Tench, the lead guitarist and pianist, respectively, of Tom Petty's band the Heartbreakers. They did a mini-set of three songs, and the banter between the songs was an important part of that, in my opinion. Nearly all the talking was in the last section of the concert. If you watch that on YouTube, you'll hear nice spoken tributes to Petty by his wife Dana, his daughter Adria, Stevie Nicks, a poem by George Harrison's wife Olivia, and more.

Most of the songs sound great. But a few were recorded from homes with poor recording equipment. I rejected a few songs due to sound quality issues. I didn't include a version of "Yer So Bad" by Adam Sandler mostly because it was so poorly recorded. The songs by Beck and Susanna Hoffs also were not recorded well, but I included them because they just barely sounded good enough for my ears, and I particularly like those two artists.

Another problem was that there didn't seem much effort to prevent multiple versions of the same songs. For instance, there were no less than four versions of the song "Wildflowers!" I removed two of them, by the bands Grouplove and the Arts in Medicine Hospital Band, while keeping the versions by Eddie Vedder and Brandi Carlile. The song "Honey Bee" was another problem. There were three versions that I decided to keep, by Larkin Poe, Grace Potter with Reysonator, and the Foo Fighters. There were all good, and all different from each other. I removed some other songs that were done more than once. There are a few other songs with two versions: "American Girl," "Room at the Top," "Runnin' Down a Dream," and "Walls (Circus)." Since the concert is so long at three hours, I figure a few of those are okay.

Almost all musicians played just one song. There are a couple of exceptions though. As mentioned above, Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench did three songs together to end the concert. Norah Jones played two songs. And Margo Price and Lukas Nelson each did one song, but then also did a duet together.

As I mentioned above, this a great concert. All sorts of my favorite musicians were included, and they did excellent versions. Honestly, I could hardly have picked a better line-up myself. If you like Tom Petty at all, please give this a listen!

Another point I want to mention is that the vast majority of the performances were done on or just before the broadcast date, from the musician's homes, but there are a few exceptions. The Gary Clark, Jr. and Jason Isbell performances comes from concerts in 2017. The Killers did their song "American Girl" in concert. I don't know the date or location, but they played that song a bunch of times in concert from 2017 to 2019. Eddie Vedder's version of "Wildflowers" is a solo acoustic version done without an audience, so it sounds much like the others. But it actually was done in 2017 at some point after Petty's death and not made public until this concert.

Oh, and one last thing: as Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench repeatedly said at the very end of the concert, if you're a US citizen, please VOTE in the election on November 3rd!

Larkin Poe - Yet Even Still More Tip O' the Hat - Various Cover Versions (2020)

I am so very, very glad to post this album. I've been steadily collecting Larkin Poe's "Tip O' the Hat" video performances since the start of 2020, waiting for enough to make up an album that's about 45 minutes in length, and I finally have enough.

If you haven't listened to any of these "Tip O' the Hat" albums, what are you waiting for? They're great. I'm a big fan of acoustic music, and it's fun hearing these sisters do acoustic versions of what are often full band songs, even including hard rockers like "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath or "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas.

Like the previous albums in this series, most of the songs are classic hits, but there are a few unexxpected choices, such as "Highland Wedding" or "Stealin'." Once again, I'm impressed by their musical tastes.

This is the list of the original artists that made each song famous:

01 Stealin' - traditional / Grateful Dead
02 Sharp Dressed Man - ZZ Top
03 Highland Wedding [Instrumental] - Steve Morse
04 Ramblin' Man - Allman Brothers Band
05 Iron Man - Black Sabbath
06 Kokomo Blues - Mississippi Fred McDowell
07 Southern Cross - Crosby, Stills and Nash
08 Ballad of Curtis Loew - Lynyrd Skynyrd
09 Man of Constant Sorrow - traditional / Stanley Brothers
10 Rocky Mountain Way - Joe Walsh
11 Nights in White Satin - Moody Blues
12 Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas
13 The Dance - Garth Brooks
14 Bell Bottom Blues - Derek & the Dominos
15 Lean on Me - Bill Withers

As an aside, when this album series started, I named the first one "Tip O' the Hat," then the second one "More Tip O' the Hat," then "Still More Tip O' the Hat." Things kind of got out of control with "Yet Still More Tip O' the Hat" and this one, "Yet Even Still More Tip O' the Hat." I'm having silly fun with the increasingly long-winded titles. If you have any suggestions on what I should name the next one, please let me know.

Here's the usual song list:

01 Stealin' (Larkin Poe)
02 Sharp Dressed Man (Larkin Poe)
03 Highland Wedding [Instrumental] (Larkin Poe & Mike Seal)
04 Ramblin' Man (Larkin Poe)
05 Iron Man (Larkin Poe)
06 Kokomo Blues (Larkin Poe)
07 Southern Cross (Larkin Poe)
08 Ballad of Curtis Loew (Larkin Poe)
09 Man of Constant Sorrow (Larkin Poe)
10 Rocky Mountain Way (Larkin Poe)
11 Nights in White Satin (Larkin Poe)
12 Carry On Wayward Son (Larkin Poe)
13 The Dance (Larkin Poe)
14 Bell Bottom Blues (Larkin Poe)

Larkin Poe - Brooklyn Bowl, Nashville, TN, 6-27-2020

I've posted a lot of Larkin Poe music lately. What's different about this one? First off, it's brand new. It's a concert that literally took place a few hours ago. This is the first time I've posted a concert that happened on the same day, and I'm psyched about that. More importantly, I've posted acoustic music from them recently, but this is a full-band concert. It's the Lovell sisters, Megan and Rebecca, on electric guitars instead of acoustic ones, with a bassist and drummer added. It's also a complete concert, at one hour and 16 minutes.

Is this a home concert? Kind of. Technically it isn't, since it was recorded at the Brooklyn Bowl. That might sound like a grand venue such as the Hollywood Bowl, but it's actually a bowling rink. However, in another way it is, because there was absolutely no audience for this concert. It was professionally recorded and filmed by them to be broadcast over the Internet. It's odd sometimes to have a rocking song come to an end and be greeted by total silence. But on the plus side, one can hear the music even better without the usual hollering and cheering.

Just a week or two prior to this, Larkin Poe released their latest album "Self Made Man." The set list leans heavily on songs from that album. I believe all the songs are originals, except for three blues songs ("Preachin' Blues," "John the Revelator," and "Come On in My Kitchen," plus a snippet of "Blue Sky" by the Allman Brothers Band.

Lately, the coronavirus pandemic has been getting worse in the US (so please keep social distancing!). I wonder if this sort of concert - playing in an venue outside one's home but to all empty seats - will become common in the months to come. Strange times!

Larkin Poe - Home Concert, Nashville, TN, 6-13-2020

A couple of days ago, Larkin Poe released their new studio album "Self Made Man." I've already heard it, and I highly recommend it. I think it's even better than their last couple, so check it out. Generally speaking, Larkin Poe has been doing a fair number of home concerts during the coronavirus lockdown, but usually behind a pay wall. However, to promote their new album, they've done another one for the general public. Not only that, but it was done for charity, with all donations going to the non-profit "Play for Change." Here is that concert, performed just one day after the release of their new album.

Given the timing of this concert and their new album, it's not surprising that many of the songs on it are from that album. Specifically, five of them are from that album, while the other four are not. Three of the other four are covers, including a nice version of the Bill Withers hit "Lean on Me," which I've never heard them do before.

All in all, the concert is 46 minutes long. I lightly edited some of the talking between songs to remove some flubs and digressions. But I'm guessing I only cut out a minute or two. Otherwise, the sound quality is excellent and there are no problems.

Larkin Poe - Home Concert, Nashville, TN, 5-22-2020

One silver lining to the dark cloud of the coronavirus pandemic has been the many home concerts and other home recordings musicians have done while they've been stuck in lockdown at home. I've been hoping that Larkin Poe would get in on the fun, especially since they excel so well in the acoustic format. However, they've chosen to do some home concerts behind a paywall. I don't want to hinder their efforts to make a living as musicians, so I don't plan on posting those, at least not for a long, long time. If you're interested in watching their livestream concerts, you can do so here (and you can sign up retroactively, by the way):

https://larkinpoe.veeps.com/stream/events/4ec9b19df58b

They've been doing about one a week, each one with a different focus. A portion of the proceeds are going to United Way Nashville.

Anyway, although I don't intend to post any of that stuff, I'm glad to say that they've done some other home concert performances which they've freely posted on their Facebook page and elsewhere. So this is a collection of those. Note, by the way, that this does not include any of their "Tip O' the Hat" performances, which they continue to steadily do. I'll post another album of those when I have enough material.

This album starts with four cover songs. The first two were done as a special tribute to John Lee Hooker, and naturally are versions of his songs. The third one is a Reverend Gary Davis tribute, and is one of his songs. Then they did an Allman Brothers Band song, "Little Martha."

While all of those were recorded on separate occasions, the remainder of this album was recorded on May 22, 2020. Larkin Poe has a new album, "Self Made Man," coming out in June, so they did a home concert to help promote it. Two of the songs they played, "Holy Ghost Fire" and "Keep Diggin'," are from the upcoming album. The rest are originals, except for "Preachin' Blues" by the blues great Son House and "American Girl" by Tom Petty. (Technically, "American Girl" was from a different performance, but it was recorded on the same day, at the same location.)

I probably should mention that all the songs are acoustic performances, which isn't that surprising considering the two Larkin Poe sisters have been stuck in their house without the rest of their band. And it also goes without saying that it's great stuff. It's 41 minutes long. Let's hope they'll do more home concerts for the public domain, in which case I'll go back and rename this "Home Concert 1."

I've kept in their talking before each song. But I had to edit it down sometimes. For instance, because this is from several different dates, they introduced themselves several times, and I removed most of those intros.

Larkin Poe - Yet Still More Top O' the Hat - Various Cover Versions (2019-2020)

I'm very psyched to be able to post this album today, for three reasons. One, Larkin Poe are great, and I'm always keen to turn more people on to their music.

Two, I've been slowly collecting their acoustic cover versions that they post on YouTube, waiting for enough to fill another album in the "Tip O' the Hat" series. This is the fourth album, and each one has been about 45 minutes. A couple of months ago, I was ready to go, except I was one song short. Finally, the posted one more a few days ago, and it's an ideal album closer, a mellow instrumental. So I'm glad I waited.

As for the musical content of this album, it's the same great stuff as the others in this series. All-acoustic covers of classic songs, played only the way Larkin Poe can play them. They're mostly famous rock hits, but there's a wide variety, with the occasional obscure blues cover thrown in.

My only disappointment is that I want to post another album in this series, which I want to call "Yet Even Still More Tip O' the Hat" (I'm having fun with the increasingly ridiculous long album titles.) But I'll have to start back at zero and probably wait a year or longer for enough new songs to be posted on YouTube. But until then, you have this album, plus the previous three in the series (and the very similar "Vintage Covers" album), to enjoy.

01 [You Make Me Feel Like] A Natural Woman (Larkin Poe)
02 In the Air Tonight (Larkin Poe)
03 Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Larkin Poe)
04 Don't You Mind People Grinnin' in Your Face (Larkin Poe)

Larkin Poe - Run for Your Money - Non-Album Tracks (2017-2018)

I'm bummed that I feel obliged to make this album, because this truly is an album that shouldn't exist. I'm a big fan of Larkin Poe, as can be seen by the way I keep posting their music alongside many of the greatest musicians of all time.

But they're not nearly as popular as they should be. I think a big reason for that is that they keep making terrible decisions over how to release their music to the public. Earlier in their career, they had a strange habit of releasing only EPs, releasing six in a row! EPs don't get noticed and reviewed the way full albums do, so that's strange. More recently, they released "Reskinned" in 2016, half of which was the exact same recordings of the same songs on their previous albums. Then they released "Peach" in 2017, and "Venom and Faith" in 2018. Both are excellent albums, but both are just over 30 minutes long. (Note that I "fixed" "Reskinned" in a previous post by adding a bunch of unreleased original songs that are different than any of these songs.)

Why, for the last three albums, have they released albums that are short? It leaves the impression that they don't have enough material, but that's not true. Witness this album, which is made up entirely of songs they have been playing in concert since at least before the recording of their most recent album, and all but two of the songs are originals ("Rollin' and Tumblin" and "Never Been to Spain"). Why haven't these songs been included on album?! To my ears, this album is just as good as either of their last two albums. The song quality can be seen by the fact that they play many of these songs in concert a lot. In fact, according to setlist.fm, a few are some of their most played songs.

If there ever has been a recent band sabotaging their popularity by poor choices about how to release their music, it's this band! Hopefully, this album will help ameliorate that somewhat. Hopefully also many or most of these songs will end up on their next album. If so, I'll take this post down to help with their record sales.

By the way, I've included one song only as a bonus track, in part because it's a cover and in part because the crowd noise means the sound quality is a notch below the rest of the album (which, by the way, has excellent sound). It's a cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs." Like most of the songs on this album, they're in full rocking mode.

01 Run for Your Money (Larkin Poe)
02 Might as Well Be Me (Larkin Poe)
03 Dark Matter (Larkin Poe)
04 Poor Folk (Larkin Poe)

Larkin Poe - Vintage Cover Versions, 2014-2015

It's time for some more of my favorite current obscure group that should be widely known and celebrated, Larkin Poe. If you've missed my previous posts, they are a duo of sisters who sing great harmonies, write very good songs, and one of them adds killer slide guitar.

Starting in 2017, they've posted a series of occasional YouTube videos of their acoustic covers of classic songs, called "Tip O' the Hat." I've made three album compilations of these versions (with more hopefully coming if they keep posting them). But it turns out they did an identical thing back in 2014 and 2015. Only that time, they called it "Vintage Cover Videos."

One can still find a bunch of videos from this series posted on their YouTube channel. Unfortunately, a bunch of them have slipped into "private viewing mode" only, which means I can't access them. Luckily, I grabbed a bunch of them a couple of years ago, so I think I have most of them. If anyone knows how to get access to the private ones, please let me know.

They posted about one album's worth of songs, but due to the private ones I can't access, it's a short album. To make up for that, I looked around for other cover versions they did in 2014 or 2015 also done as just an acoustic duo instead of their full band, and I found four more songs. Adding those in, it makes for an album that's 39 minutes long.

On this album, you'll find covers from Michael Jackson to Bing Crosby, from the Arctic Monkeys to Sonny and Cher, from Elliott Smith to Leadbelly. I love their wide ranging taste in music, and how they manage to put their personal stamp on everything they do.

Here are the artists who did the originals and/or famous versions for each song:

Larkin Poe - Still More Tip O' the Hat - Various Cover Versions (2018)

The Larkin Poe YouTube webpage - https://www.youtube.com/user/LarkinPoe - has a section called "Tip O' the Hat" which features the talented duo playing classic songs by others with just the two of them and their guitars. I collected these into albums of about 45 minutes each, which I have called "Tip O' the Hat" and "More Tip O' the Hat." It's taken a few months, but there finally are enough songs for another album. I'm calling it "Still More Tip O' the Hat."

I don't have much more to say except that if you like the two previous albums in this series, you'll like this one just as much. As you can see from the song list, most of the songs are well known classic rock songs from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, but there also is the occasional blues song such as "I Just Can't Be Satisfied," "Death Came a-Knockin'" and "Don't You Mind People Grinnin' in Your Face."

This album is 44 minutes long.

01 Hard to Handle (Larkin Poe)
02 Day Tripper (Larkin Poe)
03 Crawlin' King Snake (Larkin Poe)
04 Sometimes (Larkin Poe)
05 Ophelia (Larkin Poe)
06 Hard Time Killing Floor Blues (Larkin Poe)
07 I Can't Be Satisfied (Larkin Poe)
08 Helplessly Hoping (Larkin Poe)
09 Baby Please Don't Leave Me (Larkin Poe)
10 Listen to Her Heart (Larkin Poe)
11 Jesus Is Just Alright (Larkin Poe)
12 Death Came A-Knockin' (Larkin Poe)
13 Everyday Is a Winding Road (Larkin Poe)
14 China White (Larkin Poe)
15 Maggie May (Larkin Poe)
16 Thank God I'm a Country Boy (Larkin Poe)

Larkin Poe - Reskinned - Alternate Version (2016)

I love Larkin Poe, and you need to go buy all their albums right now. ;) So I'm happy to tell you they just released a new album a few days ago, called "Venom and Faith." I heard it and it's great, so go get it! ;)

That said, Larkin Poe frustrates me because they seem determined to release their music in a way that gets the last amount of attention, if they release it at all. For instance, they are champions of the EP format, having released six EPs of all new material in their relatively short career, compared to only four full albums.

Furthermore, one of those albums hardly counts as an album. In 2014, they released the "Kin" album, which is fantastic. If you buy just one album from them, I suggest that one, especially because it contains "Stubborn Love," which I think is one of the very best songs by anyone this decade. Then in 2016, they released "Reskinned." But it only had five songs of new music, a measely 17 minutes. The rest were repeats of songs from "Kin." That would have been okay if they redid those songs in some different way, but they were the exact same versions!

So, to celebrate the release of their new album and hopefully turn some new people on to this great musical duo, I've made my own version of "Reskinned." The first five songs are the exact same versions of the five new songs on the official version. But then I flesh the album out with five more songs, for a total of 41 minutes of music. Four of the five additional songs are originals that haven't been officially released anywhere, and the fifth, "New Pony," is a cover of an obscure Bob Dylan song that sounds just like an original. Why they repeated so many songs from "Kin" when they had these quality originals available at the time is beyond me!

Three of the additional songs come from a concert, but it was one that was played in a recording studio of sorts, so the sound quality sounds just as good as studio recordings, in my opinion. I was able to completely eliminate even a hint of audience noise. The other two were done live in the studio for radio shows, and sound just as good.

By the way, their new album is also only 32 minutes long. Larkin Poe, what's your deal with so many EPs and short albums?! And then all sorts of good original songs that go unreleased? Sigh!

01 Sucker Puncher (Larkin Poe)
02 Trouble in Mind (Larkin Poe)
03 When God Closes a Door (Larkin Poe)
04 P-R-O-B-L-E-M (Larkin Poe)
05 Blunt (Larkin Poe)
06 Thief in the Night (Larkin Poe)
07 Mad as a Hatter (Larkin Poe)
08 I Hate the Way You... (Larkin Poe)
09 New Pony (Larkin Poe)
10 Hey Sinner (Larkin Poe)

In keeping with Larkin Poe's seeming effort to try to get you to NOT buy their albums, the official cover of "Reskinned" is exactly the same as "Kin" in every way, except for the different title, plus it's in black and white. That makes it both confusing and worse than the nice color cover. It deserves a different cover, so I've made one here using a publicity photo from around the time of the album release.

Larkin Poe - More Tip 'O the Hat - Various Cover Versions (2017-2018)

I recently posted an album by Larkin Poe called "Tip O' the Hat." It's simply a collection in chronological order of cover songs they've posted on their YouTube page. They've done so many cover songs that here's a second album of them. (A third album is still in the making.)

You should read that prior post to see what the Tip O' the Hat is all about. But suffice to say that Larkin Poe are a kick-ass pair of sisters (Rebecca and Megan Lovell) who, in addition to writing and performing their own songs, play this covers to give a tip of the hat to the musicians who have inspired them. Unlike most of their own material, which is recorded with a full band, these songs are done with just the two of them and one or two guitars. Often, the only accompaniment is Megan on a lapsteel slide guitar.

Check it out! As you can see from the song list, they do a lot of famous classic rock songs, but also mix in some blues classics, since the blues is a key part of their sound. This probably isn't the first place to start, but if you haven't heard of this duo, you really should give them a listen.
