Bowie Improvement

When I posted a David Bowie 1990 BBC concert back in 2022, the sound quality had issues. Yesterday, a commenter named Captcrunch pointed out a better sounding version. So I replaced the whole thing. It sounds significantly better now. I speak of this one:

David Bowie - BBC Sessions, Volume 7: In Concert, Milton Keynes National Bowl, Milton Keynes, Britain, 8-5-1990

Here's the link to the improved version:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2022/07/david-bowie-bbc-sessions-volume-7-in.html

Thanks to Captcrunch. And if anyone else finds better versions of albums than what I've posted, let me know and I'll make the upgrade.

Covered Covers

I recently announced that I've updated all the links for the 150 or so "Covered" albums. And I mentioned that I made changes to many of the album covers for them while I was at it.

The changes were mostly pretty minor, to be honest. A lot of it was standardizing the size of the text. And, for instance, for some albums, I wrote "The Best Of" and others I just wrote "Best Of." So I standardized that kind of thing as well. But I did make changes to the pictures too. I even replaced some of the pictures entirely, for instance for two of the Bacharach and David volumes.

So, if any of that matters to you, redownloading 150 plus albums is a big pain in the ass. I got a request today by a commenter named Private Beach to make just the changed covers available. I decided that was reasonable. Thus, here's a zip file with all of the 150 or so album covers. Not all of them were changed, but the vast majority were (if only in subtle ways).

https://pixeldrain.com/u/ZajSf728

But note that if you download this, you still have to put each one of them in with the albums they belong to.

Covered Albums

This is just a note to say that, over the past few days, I've updated all the links for all of the "Covered" albums posted on the blog so far. There are 154 of those by now, with more coming soon. I'd noticed that many of the links were from upload.ee, and are starting to die. So I redid all the album links, whether they were broken yet or not, to make sure there were at least two links for all of those albums. While I was at it, I also made some small improvements to the cover art for many of the albums.

This is a good moment to take stock of how that series is going. So far, I've profiled 75 songwriters or songwriting teams. I have about another 35 ready to go, cover art and all. I tend to drag my feet on posting those though, because I have to put more effort than usual into the write-ups for them. But I'm making a concerted effort to get to those lately. Some of the bigger names already finished include the Bee Gees, George Harrison, Gamble and Huff, Tom Petty, and Max Martin.

But I also have plans to make albums for dozens more. A lot of those I haven't even started yet. For some, I'm getting key help from Fabio from Rio. Some of the ones where I'm getting closer include Bob Dylan, Ray Davies, Brian Wilson, Lennon and McCartney, Jagger and Richards, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Prince, and Willie Nelson. But there are many more than that on the wish list.

If you have suggestions for songwriters I might be overlooking, and/or if you want to get involved to help pick songs, please let me know. In particular, I'd also like to deal with the great songwriters from the pre-rock and roll era, but I struggle with that since I'm not very familiar with a lot of that music. Thanks.

Another Poll

Here's a really interesting thing that just happened. Yesterday, somebody posted a list of dozens of newly liberated bootlegs, nearly all of them recorded at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, New York. They're generally from about 2012 to 2024, though there are some exceptions. (The venue closed in 1976 after many decades, then reopened in 2012, so it's everything interesting since the reopening.) They include many of the biggest name musical acts to pass through there. Here's the list (scroll down the thread a bit to see it):

https://www.guitars101.com/threads/you-didnt-get-this-from-me.843644/

Actually, I see that's only a partial list. Here's a PDF file of the complete list, which is twice as long:

https://pixeldrain.com/u/86W6nJCY

If you're interested, I highly recommend you grab the ones you want for yourself, while the grabbing is good. Who knows, the links may all die at any time.

There's good news and bad news. The good news is that, of the ones I've sampled so far, the sound quality is fantastic. Every single one is a soundboard. Many also are high quality videos. The bad news is that most of them are mono, and most are just a single sound or video file, with no song list or anything else. I can't do anything about the mono, but I could fix the other issues. I want to take some of these and give them my usual treatment, chopping them into mp3s, giving them song titles, making cover art, and so forth. But I can only do that for a small percentage of this very long list, especially since I have so much other music I want to post too.

So that gets me to a poll. If you want to see me fix up and post certain concerts from that list, please write which ones you want the most. Just give the artist name and year, and I can figure out the rest. To keep things reasonable, please list no more than ten. I don't know how many I will convert, but I'll try to do at least the top vote getters. Thanks.

The Flying Byrds Brothers Fly Higher

A few days ago (as I write this in mid-February 2026), I posted a 1970 concert in which the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Bros played extensively together. One commenter noted that there was recording of an earlier part of that concert with the same excellent sound quality. I looked into it, and found that recording, which indeed sounds as good as the rest. So I added it in. It extends the concert by 50 minutes.

Here's the link (or just scroll down a bit):

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2026/02/the-flying-burrito-bros-byrds-flying.html

This addition works out very nicely, because only one of these added Byrds songs, from the early show, was repeated when the Byrds and Flying Burrito Bros played together in the late show.

Thanks to Psyclist for pointing out the existence of this extra material.

SoulseekQT

I mentioned a couple of times recently that I was having some computer troubles in recent weeks. I finally got that cleared up, but at the price of having to reinstall Windows, which means I've had to reinstall all my computer programs. The reason I mention this to you is because it meant I reinstalled SoulseekQT too.

I was able to get back to my old account there: albumsthatshouldexist. But I had shared folders one by one, sharing only the albums I've shared on this blog and not everything else. (That's so I don't share the many hundreds of albums I plan on posting but aren't ready yet.) To reshare everything that way, I would have had to individually select over 3000 folders. That was a pain in the ass, and then I'd have to do it all over again the next time I had a big computer problem. So I've decided to do things a different way. Instead, I've moved copies of all the albums I've posted at this blog into one folder, and I'm just sharing that folder. It's been a few days since I did that, and some people are starting to download albums, so you may find them if you search SoulseekQT. (Although I would warn that SoulseekQT has grown so big that you don't connect with everyone else on the network all the time. It's a random luck thing, and sometimes you have to wait a few days as the program rotates you to different parts of the network.)

Anyway, I can be long-winded at times, but there's a reason I'm mentioning this. I've never seen what my SoulseekQT files look from the perspective of another person on the network, but I've had people complain that my files can be hard to understand because the names of the albums could be seen, but not the names of the musical acts. Now, for instance, all the Kinks albums will be in a folder called "Kinks" that is also shared. So hopefully that will make it easier for you if you want to download a bunch of my music via SoulseekQT.

Good Month

Just a quick note. Today, I noticed that I made 92 posts in the month of January, 2026. That was the most prolific month since I've started this blog, by a fair margin. (A few were announcements, but still.) Let's hope there are more months like that. Who knows, someday I may even post 100 albums in a month, knock on wood.

Some Improvements

I'm glad to announce that after a week long ban, I'm allowed to use Pixeldrain for download links again. So I just updated all the links I'd posted in the last week. I'm very happy about that, because I find the Pixeldrain links to be better than the BestFile ones.

Also, recently, I've been taking advantage of the MVSEP program's "denoise" filter. It used to be the only way to get rid of hiss was with an audio editing filter called "noise reduction." But this is a crude technique, and it often got rid of music along with hiss, so I had a rule to only use it on talking tracks. However, thanks to improved AI-based technology, the denoise filter works much better.

Let me show an example. This is a screenshot of the Audacity program, where I do most of my music editing. It's a song by the band Glass Menagerie. I took the screenshot after using the denoise function to split the song into noise, at the bottom, and everything else. You can see there's a fair amount down there. Once I split it like this, all I have to do is delete that track, and save the rest. It's easy, and it makes a huge difference on songs like this one that had lots of hiss. This example was chosen more or less at random. For some songs, the hiss level is much greater.

So, using this technique, I made improvements to the following albums.

The Blues Project - The Matrix, San Francisco, CA, 9-1966

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2023/04/the-blues-project-matrix-san-francisco.html

Glass Menagerie - BBC Sessions (1968-1969)

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2025/03/glass-menagerie-bbc-sessions-1968-1969.html

Tracy Chapman - WMFO Studio, Tufts University, Medford, MA, 1-2-1984

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2021/11/tracy-chapman-wmfo-studio-tufts.html

Fairport Convention - Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 9-13-1968

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2021/11/fairport-convention-concertgebouw.html

Derek & the Dominos - Marquee Club, London, Britain, 8-11-1970

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2021/11/derek-dominos-marquee-club-london.html

Joni Mitchell - Eastern Rain - Non-Album Tracks (1966-1967)

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2021/02/joni-mitchell-eastern-rain-various.html

Lucinda Williams - McCabe's Guitar Shop, Santa Monica, CA, August 9, 1991

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2019/05/lucinda-williams-mccabes-guitar-shop.html

Dusty Springfield - On TV and Radio, Volume 1: 1964-1966

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2018/05/dusty-springfield-on-tv-and-radio-1964.html

So if you like any of those albums, I recommend you redownload them. They sound better now. For the Joni Mitchell, Glass Menagerie, and Dusty Springfield ones, just a handful of songs needed improvement. And with Springfield, I still want to work through her other "On TV and Radio" albums. I'm sure there's more hiss there too.

Furthermore, an alert commenter noted that about six minutes was somehow missing to this album. I don't know what happened there, but it's fixed now.

Donald Byrd - A New Perspective (On a New Perspective) (1964) (A Mike Solof guest post)

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2025/09/donald-byrd-new-perspective-on-new.html

Getting back to the hiss issue, I found the above albums to fix by searching my blog for the word "hiss" and seeing which of the albums that came up still needed improvement with that. But I'm sure there are many more that could be improved this way. I don't have time to go back and relisten to the thousands of albums I've posted to figure this out. So if you can think of albums I've posted with hiss problems, let me know, and I'll check to see if they can also be improved. Once I post an album here, I want to make sure it's presented with the best sound quality possible, even if that means more work to fix things. Thanks.

Problem Again

This is just a quick note that I've been banned from using Pixeldrain again, due to another copyright issue. This time, it was the acoustic version of David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" album. The BestFile link still works for that one though. Previously, when I've been banned from Pixeldrain, it's only lasted a week. Let's hope that's the case this time too. Assuming it is, I'll backfill the links once it's working again. But in the meantime, it'll just be BestFile links.

Oh, also, Pixeldrain has announced that the amount of time they allow until a link goes dead due to inactivity will be cut in half, from 120 days to 60 days. So far, I've almost never had any Pixeldrain links go dead, but I guess that will be changing.

Re-Re-Squeezed, and More

Just yesterday, I posted an announcement that said I'd found a better copy of a 1984 BBC concert by Difford and Tilbrook, the two singer-songwriters in the band Squeeze. Today, musical friend Progsprog saw that, and realized he had a version with equally excellent sound, but also four songs that were missing from the other version. So he sent it to me. I added those songs in, and I've updated that album again. Now it's fifteen minutes longer than before, and much better.

A big thanks to Progsprog, for noticing and helping out.

Here's the link to that one:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2025/01/difford-tilbrook-squeeze-bbc-in-concert.html

Furthermore, these announcements helped me remember that I made some additions to a few other albums in the last month, but I forgot to make an announcement about them. So here is such an announcement, better late than never.

First comes the name of the album. Then the names of the songs that were recently added. Then the link to get you to the album to download it.

Re-Squeezed

Back in January 2025, I posted a BBC concert by Difford and Tilbrook, the two main singer-songwriters in the band Squeeze. It's from 1984, during the only time in the 1980s they put out an album under their own name instead of using the Squeeze name. Unfortunately, the sound quality wasn't as good as one would expect, even after some tinkering.

Happily, today I noticed the music blog "Voodoo Wagon" recently posted a version from a different source, and it sounds great. So I've updated the album with that better source. Here's the link if you want to redownload it:

Kool Again

Just yesterday, I posted a Kool and the Gang BBC concert from 1981. In my write-up, I lamented that the album lacked two of their biggest hits that had already been released, "Jungle Boogie" and "Ladies' Night." Progsprog saw that, and it turns out he has a slightly different version of the same concert. It was exactly the same until the end. Then, it had "Ladies' Night" as the second to last song, plus a longer version of the last song, "Celebration." Together, the additions make up 14 minutes, mostly because "Ladies' Night" is quite long. So if you downloaded it already, I suggest you download this revised version. And thanks again to Progsprog for his help.

Songwriters' Circle Redo

Earlier in 2025, I posted an episode of the BBC TV show "Songwriters' Circle," that had the singer-songwriters Graham Gouldman, Ron Sexsmith, and Fran Healy take turns performing their songs. Unfortunately, I had to piece that together from various YouTube videos, and a couple of songs (plus spoken intros to other songs) were missing. But recently, a kind person named Alan sent me the entire show, with excellent sound quality. So I redid the album from scratch.

Here's the link to the updated version:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2025/02/graham-gouldman-fran-healy-ron-sexsmith.html

And thanks to Alan. I love it when these sorts of flaws get fixed.

Dead Man Walks Again

I got a tip from a commenter the other day, pointing to an additional song from the "Dead Man Walking" 1998 concert that I posted here in 2022. I investigated further, and found out that the entire Tom Waits set from the show somehow was leaked to the public with excellent sound quality about a week ago (as I write this in mid-November 2025). That's eight songs, over half an hour long, almost like a mini-Tom Waits concert.

So I've updated the album with those extra songs included. Here's the link to the post if you want to update your version:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2022/02/various-artists-dead-man-walking.html

And thanks to aranyláz for giving me the tip!

Don McLean Again, and Chris Isaak

Just yesterday, I posted a BBC album of Don McLean performing at the Glastonbury Festival in 2011. The version I posted was 36 minutes. But musical friend Progsprog saw that post, realized he has a longer version, and sent that to me. So I just updated that album. Now, it's 58 minutes long. So if you've downloaded it already, you might want to go back and get the longer version. Thanks to Progsprog for the timely help.

Also, a few days ago, a commenter name Kris pointed out that he had a better sounding version of the  1991 Chris Isaak BBC concert I'd posted back in 2022. He gave a link, and sure enough that version does sound better. So I've just updated that one. Here's the link:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2022/12/chris-isaak-bbc-in-concert-town-and.html

Note that I've also renamed it to "BBC Sessions, Volume 1" because I found material for a "Volume 2," which I plan on posting here soon.

And thank you as well, Kris. It would be great if more people could send me stuff they think I should post that I'm missing, especially BBC material. If you have a vast collection and want to send me a list to see if I might find something useful in it, please do!

Keep in mind that I'm not necessarily going to post all the albums from these musical acts above a certain cut off point, as I have done in earlier polls. I just did this to see where the demand was. For instance, the most surprising result of this poll for me was how high Paul Williams ended up. I thought he was considered very "uncool," like Paul Anka and Mac Davis, both of whom got zero votes. But Williams made it into the top ten. So I'll have to post an album by him, when I previously almost certainly wouldn't have. I was also particularly surprised how high Golden Earring ended up. And I was surprised by how few votes some acts got, especially Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and Smokey Robinson, both with just one vote.

To be honest, I really like this Midnight Special material, so I imagine I'll end up posting albums from the vast majority of these musical acts by and by. But I'll try to prioritize the ones that got the most votes sooner rather than later. Thanks again for your feedback.

Diana Krall Update

Over a week ago now, I posted a Diana Krall BBC concert. Shortly afterwards, a commenter named PeterH told me he had four extra songs at the end that my version was lacking. He sent them to me, and I've added them in. It really makes a difference, as it becomes clear that this is the full concert (with her giving final thank yous at the end of the last song). So if you downloaded it before, I suggest you get this version instead. Here's the link back to that post:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2025/10/diana-krall-bbc-in-concert-mermaid.html

And thanks again to PeterH for the extra songs!

A New Poll

As I've been mentioning in recent days, I recently discovered an amazing amount of music I'd previously missed, in the form of episodes of the 1970s "Midnight Special" TV show on YouTube. So far, all the episodes from the start of the show in 1973 to late 1975 have been posted, in chronological order. I've already turned a few of these into albums, and I have a few more on the way. (The "few more on the way" ones won't be included in this poll.) But aside from those, there are many, many more I possibly could make. I've just compiled a list of all the musical acts who have appeared on that show enough so that I could make a viable live album from them (meaning one that's at least half an hour long), though often I would have to compile appearances from more than one episode to get that much. Some acts (with the Kinks and Gordon Lightfoot being two that come to mind) don't have enough material yet, but eventually will if more episodes keep getting posted in chronological order. The show goes all the way to 1981, so there's a lot to come, including many acts that haven't appeared on the show yet. This poll is just about what I can do with the material that has been posted already.

So here's a list. I don't want to make albums out of all of these. That would be way too much. But some, for sure. To decide which ones, it will help me to see how great the popular demand is. So I would ask you to vote for the ones you're the most interested in. Each person should vote no more than ten times. If you do vote more, I'll only count the first ten.

Keep in mind that one interesting thing about this show is how it gives us live music from musical acts that haven't put out much, or any, live music at all, be it official albums or bootlegs. (As an example, if I look ahead to the acts on the show in the late 1970s, there will eventually be enough material for me to post a Jackie DeShannon album, which I'm psyched about because there's almost no live recordings from her whatsoever.) So you might want to keep the rarity factor in mind as well when voting. Another thing worth mentioning is that some of these acts were on the show multiple times during this time period, enough for me to make multiple albums from them. But I've have to look closer to figure that out.

This time, I'm not necessarily going to just post the ones that get the most votes. But I will keep these vote results in mind in determining which ones to do. There are 53 options in all. Thanks!

And by the way, if you want to see more detail of what was performed on each of the shows, I just found a very good webpage for that. Note the existing shows that are the subject of this poll only go up until September 1975. At their current posting pace, it'll probably take two or three more years until all the other episodes get posted as well.

Volunteers?

Oh, one more thing. It's occurred to me that I keep finding albums to post at a much faster pace than I actually get around to posting them. I probably have a few thousand albums I could post if I only had the time to process the music (meaning cutting it up into mp3s for each song, editing problems, and so forth), make the cover art (including doing Internet searches to find the best photos), and write the write-ups. If anyone wants to help with any and all of that stuff, that could really speed things up. I could really use volunteers! If you're interested, please let me know what you think you'd be able to do, and I'll send you some tasks. Thanks.

Al Green Update, and More

I've been posting music from the treasure trove of Midnight Special TV episodes I discovered the other day. After finding that, I checked to see if I had already posted any music from that show, and I discovered just two: albums for Marvin Gaye and Al Green. For the Gaye one, the music didn't need any changing. However, I did just redo the cover art, so the fonts and such will be consistent with the other albums I'm posting from that show. Here's the link, if you want the revised version:

It's a different story with the Al Green album though. It turns out the source I used when I posted it in 2020 had lots of flaws, such as incomplete songs and missing songs. So I just redid that album from scratch, using a much better source (again, taken from this new "treasure trove" I've found). So if you downloaded that one previously, I highly recommend you redownload it. Here's the link:

Also, in case you're curious, here's the "trove," if you want to take a look yourself:

Currently, as I write this in late October 2025, there are 131 available there, with more coming all the time. In fact, a new one was just released in the last 24 hours. All of those are from 1973 to 1975 so far (plus the 1972 pilot episode). There were about 350 episodes in total, as the show ran all the way to 1981. So we can look forward to a steady stream of more music in the coming years.

You might want to take a look at what's on the different episodes, and see what interests you. I'm certainly not going to post everything, or even a majority of the music. I want to put together coherent albums from a single artist. Sometimes, there's enough from one album. But other times, there might be four songs from one episode, three songs from another, and two more from yet another. That kind of thing. Putting that all together would make at least a half hour long album from just one musical act. I'm open to suggestions regarding which albums to make from all this material.

(As an aside, sadly, some other similar musical TV shows from that era are not sharing their music on YouTube, or anywhere else. For instance, "Soul Train," "ABC In Concert," and "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert." I'll keep my eyes open, but there are only a few bootlegs of that material here and there. So we're very lucky Midnight Special is opening up their archive and sharing.
