Here's the third volume out of four containing alternates to the "Covered" volumes made for the songs of Neil Young.

As with the other volumes in this series, the song selections were almost entirely made by guest poster Fabio from Rio. I just made a few small suggestions. So thanks again to him for his work on this.

I've already said pretty much all I wanted to say in Volumes 1 and 2 in this series, so look to that for more commentary. Also, Fabio wrote some liner notes, which are included in the download zip. (But they're the same notes for all four volumes.)

This album is one hour long.

Various Artists - Covered: Joan Baez, Volume 1: 1967-2016 (A Fabio from Rio Guest Post)

Here's another Fabio from Rio guest post. A couple of months ago (as I write this in May 2026), he really got into Joan Baez's music for the first time. In particular, he was struck by her songwriting talent, despite the fact that she's best known for covering songs written by others. So he put together five albums containing all of her original songs, which I recently posted. But he also made two "Covered" albums, showing off her songwriting in a different way. Some people don't like her singing. I have a friend like that, who finds it too high and shrill. So here you can enjoy her songs entirely through cover versions.

Probably the most unexpected cover here is the version of "Diamonds and Rust" by heavy metal band Judas Priest. Even more surprising, it went on to be quite popular, making their "best of" albums and inspiring more hard rocking cover versions. Here's what Baez had to say about it:

"I love that! I was so stunned when I first heard it. I thought it was wonderful. It's very rare for people to cover my songs. I think there are a couple of reasons. One is they're personal – they don't have a universal quality to them. And I think maybe it's because I've already sung them, and who wants to compete with that? But it's always flattering when somebody does."

There's a lot more to be said about this album. But, as usual with Fabio guest posts, I'll leave that to the liner notes he wrote, which are included in the download zip.

This album is 49 minutes long.

Smokey Robinson - BBC Sessions, Volume 2: Live in Hyde Park Festival, Hyde Park, London, Britain, 9-8-2013

Here's the second BBC concert Smokey Robinson did for the BBC. If there are others, I'm not aware of them.

The first one I posted was from a few years earlier, 2009. This one is somewhat shorter. It seems he jettisoned the relatively recent songs from the set list, and focused more on classic hits. (Either that, or the BBC edited the concert down that way.) Virtually all the songs are big hits he had in the 1960s as part of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. The exceptions are two big hits he had as a solo artist: "Just to See Her" and "Cruisin'."

There's a lot of overlap in the set lists between these two concerts, but there are differences too. For instance, "Volume 1" contains "Being with You" but not "Cruisin'," and this one contains "Cruisin'" but not "Being with You." Those are his two biggest solo hits.

The music is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is 58 minutes long.

01 Going to a Go-Go (Smokey Robinson)
02 I Second That Emotion (Smokey Robinson)
03 talk (Smokey Robinson)
04 You've Really Got a Hold on Me (Smokey Robinson)
05 Ooh Baby Baby (Smokey Robinson)
06 talk (Smokey Robinson)
07 The Tears of a Clown (Smokey Robinson)
08 talk (Smokey Robinson)
09 Motown Boogie - The Way You Do the Things You Do (Smokey Robinson)
10 Get Ready (Smokey Robinson)
11 My Girl (Smokey Robinson)
12 talk (Smokey Robinson)
13 Just to See Her (Smokey Robinson)
14 The Tracks of My Tears (Smokey Robinson)
15 Cruisin' (Smokey Robinson)

Elton John - Cover Versions, Volume 6: 2008-2017

Here's the sixth and last album in a series of albums of cover versions by Elton John. I had started posted this series back in 2023, but I stopped for a couple of years due to problems with the copyright police. But they seem to be going easy on me lately, so I'm finally finishing off the series.

Only four of the songs here are unreleased. "Back in the U.S.S.R." and "Birthday" are from a bootleg of a joint concert John did with Billy Joel in 2009. (He's done a lot of those over the years.) Unfortunately, the sound quality of those two songs are lower than the rest, despite my best efforts to make some audio editing improvements. "Streets of Philadelphia" is from a 2013 MusiCares tribute concert to Bruce Springsteen that I've posted in full on this blog. "Gravity," a duet with Sara Bareilles, is from a 2014 concert.

Pretty much all the other songs are from John's appearances on albums by other musical acts. Check the mp3 tags for more details. The one exception is "I Love You All the Time," which was released as an A-side in 2016.

This is probably going to be the last album in this series because, rather surprisingly, I can't find any good cover versions he did after 2017. Mind you, he's done lots of songs on his studio albums, but these albums only collect covers that aren't the versions from his studio albums. If anyone knows of covers I've missed from this time period, or after, let me know and I'll probably add them in to this album.

This album is 45 minutes long.

01 Joseph, Better You than Me (Killers, Elton John & Neil Tennant)
02 Back in the U.S.S.R (Elton John & Billy Joel)
03 Birthday (Elton John & Billy Joel)
04 Snowed In at Wheeler Street (Kate Bush & Elton John)
05 Oh Well, Part 1 (2Cellos & Elton John)
06 Streets of Philadelphia (Elton John with Raphael Saadiq)
07 The Tracks of My Tears (Smokey Robinson & Elton John)
08 Gravity (Sara Bareilles & Elton John)
09 I Love You All the Time (Elton John)
10 Where Do the Guilty Go (Elton John & Frankie Miller)
11 Alone Again, Naturally (Pet Shop Boys & Elton John)

Bettye LaVette - Season of Change - Non-Album Tracks (2012-2017)

I recently came across a recent Bettye LaVette concert I was impressed by and plan on posting here soon. That reminded me that I've never finished posting a couple more collections of non-album tracks from her. So here's the next one.

As I've mentioned previously, LaVette has had an unusual career. She had some success in the 1960s as a soul singer. But then she struggled for a long, long time, only to have a big and prolonged career revival since the early 2000s. That revival gave her a lot of opportunities to appear in tribute concerts, on other artists' albums, and the like. This album is a mix of those sorts of things.

Tracks 6, 7, 8, and 11 are unreleased. All of them come from appearances at tribute concerts. Track 9 is a live performance too, but it comes from a deluxe edition version of one of her albums. For all these live songs, I used MVSEP to get rid of the crowd noise.

The other songs are all released, and from studio albums. The first two tracks here are actually from an EP she released, called "More Thankful, More Thoughtful." It consisted of extra songs from her 2012 album "Thankful N' Thoughtful." The rest (tracks 3, 4, 5, 10, and 12) are mostly from appearances on albums by other artists, and generally are duets.

By the way, in addition to getting this album ready for posting, at the same time, I went over her past non-album track albums and improved them. I added a song to the "Heart of Gold" collection, a duet with Joe Tex that only recently emerged on YouTube. Here's the link to that one:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2021/04/bettye-lavette-heart-of-gold-various.html

And for the album in this series previous to this one, "Change Is Gonna Come," most of the songs were unreleased live versions. I used the MVSEP program to get rid of the cheering, so they'd fit in with the other songs. I also improved the sound quality of two bonus tracks enough to add them to the main album. Here's the link to that:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2023/05/bettye-lavette-change-is-gonna-come.html

This album is 52 minutes long.

01 Long Time (Bettye LaVette)
02 Save Some Time to Dream (Bettye LaVette)
03 Most of the Time (Bettye LaVette)
04 Yours and Mine (Dynamites featuring Charles Walker & Bettye Lavette)
05 Hustlin' [In the Motor City] (Bettye LaVette)
06 I'm Only Sleeping (Bettye LaVette)
07 Watching the Wheels (Bettye LaVette)
08 I [Who Have Nothing] (Bettye LaVette)
09 Like a Rock (Bettye LaVette)

Bob Weir & Warren Haynes - Weir Here, TRI Studios, San Rafael, CA, 7-31-2013

Once again, I feel obliged to begin this write-up by pointing out that Bob Weir, formerly a member of the Grateful Dead, died last month. (I write this in February 2026.) I've already posted three albums celebrating his musical legacy. But when I putting the last one, which was an episode of his 2013 webcast "Weir Here," I got interested in another episode of that webcast and decided to post it too. For this one, Weir was joined by lead guitarist Warren Haynes.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say about Haynes:

"Warren Haynes (born April 6, 1960) is an American musician, singer and songwriter. He is best known for his work as longtime guitarist with the Allman Brothers Band and as founding member of the jam band Gov't Mule. Early in his career he was a guitarist for David Allan Coe and The Dickey Betts Band. Haynes is also known for his associations with the surviving members of the Grateful Dead, including touring with Phil Lesh and Friends and the Dead."

Jerry Garcia, lead guitarist for the Grateful Dead, was born on August 1, 1942. So this performance took place one day before the anniversary of his birth. The episode had Garcia in mind. As a result, most of the songs were ones that were usually co-written and sung by Garcia, not Weir. Both Weir and Haynes sang lead vocals, separately and together.

Weir and Haynes were supported by a small backing band, while generally staying in acoustic mode: Jeff Chimenti on keyboards, Lincoln Schleifer on bass, Jeff Sipe on drums, and Alecia Chakour and Jasmine Muhammed on backing vocals. Some of these other band members sang lead vocals occasionally, especially on "The Weight."

Like the other "Weir Here" episode, I converted the video to audio, then cut it into mp3s. I haven't seen this circulating as an audio bootleg, but hopefully that will change now. Everything here is unreleased, and the sound quality is excellent.

Also like that other episode, there were two long discussions that took place during breaks in the middle of the performance. I made those two bonus tracks, so one can hear the music without interruption.

This album is an hour and 20 minutes long, not including the bonus tracks.

01 Walkin' Blues (Bob Weir & Warren Haynes)
02 talk (Bob Weir & Warren Haynes)
03 The Weight (Bob Weir & Warren Haynes)
04 Bird Song (Bob Weir & Warren Haynes)
05 West L.A. Fadeaway (Bob Weir & Warren Haynes)
06 Sugaree (Bob Weir & Warren Haynes)

Bob Weir & Phil Lesh - Weir Here, TRI Studios, San Rafael, CA, 3-13-2013

Last month, January 2026, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead died. He was 78 years old. I've already posted a couple of things to celebrate his musical legacy, but I want to post another one.

In 2012, Weir opened up his own music studio, called Tamalpais Research Institute Studios, or TRI Studios for short. In 2012 and 2013, he hosted about a dozen concerts in this studio, which were broadcast on the Internet. Generally speaking, he performed acoustic in front of a very small audience, with different guests each episode. I found this episode the most interesting, because his main guest this time was Phil Lesh, the long-time bassist for the Grateful Dead. After Jerry Garcia died in 1995 and the Dead broke up, Weir and Lesh did perform sometimes, for instance in the band the Other Ones. But they almost never performed together in acoustic mode, especially in a studio setting like this. All the songs performed were originally done by the Grateful Dead.

Some other people took part in this concert as well. For the first four songs, it was just Weir and Lesh as a duo, with Lesh coming in halfway through the first song. Then, for tracks 5, 6, and 7, they were joined by Jason Crosby and Joe Russo. For the last song, "Friend of the Devil," Lesh left and was replaced by Cass McCombs. Apparently, that's Lesh who sang lead vocals on "Operator." (The original version on the "American Beauty" album was sung by Ron "Pigpen" McKernan.)

Twice, between songs, the band members stopped playing and had an extension discussion amongst themselves. All that talking has less relistening value for me. So I took those two discussions and put them at the end as optional bonus tracks.

When I found this on YouTube, I did my usual thing of converting the video to audio format, and chopping it into mp3s. I was surprised that I haven't seen it shared as audio files, even though it seems everything Dead-related gets shared that way. So hopefully it can spread around now.

This album is an hour and three minutes long.

01 Sugar Magnolia (Bob Weir & Phil Lesh)
02 Cosmic Charlie (Bob Weir & Phil Lesh)
03 Loose Lucy (Bob Weir & Phil Lesh)
04 Jack Straw (Bob Weir & Phil Lesh)
05 Operator (Bob Weir & Phil Lesh)
06 Lazy River Road (Bob Weir & Phil Lesh)
07 Playing in the Band (Bob Weir & Phil Lesh)
08 talk (Bob Weir & Phil Lesh)
09 Friend of the Devil (Bob Weir & Phil Lesh)

Nicki Bluhm & the Gramblers - The Van Sessions, Part 3 (2013-2017)

Way back in 2019, I posted two albums I made of the band Nicki Bluhm and Gramblers performing cover songs. They got some media attention for a few years through the gimmick of recording cover songs while the played inside a van driving down the road. For reasons I'll explain, I've gone back and made a third album of their van sessions. I also completely overhauled and added to the two albums I'd made already.

The one problem with these songs recorded in a van was that they were... genuinely recorded in a van! That meant a lot of ambient noise, such as the sound of gear shifts and nearby traffic. When I posted some songs back in 2019, I tried to clean that up as best I could, but there wasn't much I could do, given the tools available at the time. But recently I discovered a relatively new tool for the MVSEP program called "denoise." It does a fantastic job of reducing hiss and other noise without damaging the music. One of the first thoughts I had when I started that was that I could finally get rid of the hiss on the two albums I'd made by this band. But then it occurred to me I could probably fix more songs they did that had even more hiss. There were some I had discarded because the hiss problem was too much.

So I went back to their old videos posted on YouTube and downloaded the songs I had previously skipped. To my delight, when I tried using the denoise function on them, all that hiss disappeared, even on the extreme cases! I swear, what audio editing technology can do these days is like magic. I found enough material for a third album, as well as drastically improving the sound quality for the songs I'd posted already.

Note however that I just redid the other two albums at the same time I'm posting this, and the new songs are scattered over all three albums. Eight out of 14 songs on this album are new.  But also, six out of 16 songs on Volume 1 are new, and four out of 15 songs on Volume 2 are new. So if you like this, you really should redownload the other two volumes as well. Between the new songs and the de-hissed old songs those albums are drastically improved. Here are the links:

Volume 1:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2019/04/nicki-bluhm-gramblers-van-sessions-part.html

Volume 2:

https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2019/04/nicki-bluhm-gramblers-van-sessions-part_16.html

Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers were in existence from about 2010 to 2018. Nicki Bluhm has continued with a successful solo career, but she hasn't done anything like the van sessions. So this focuses just on the Gramblers time period. Even with the Gramblers, the actually van sessions started strong in 2011 and 2013, and then slowly trailed off. On this album, tracks 2, 4, 5, 10, 12, and 13 were actually recorded inside their van. The rest are from various sources. Tracks 1, 11, and 14 are from concerts. (I removed the applause from those.) The others are from webcasts and radio sessions and things of that nature, without an audience. Check out the mp3 tags for the exact details.

This album is 54 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original musical acts for each song:

01 Somebody to Love - Jefferson Airplane
02 Lido Shuffle - Boz Scaggs
03 In the Mountains - Sarah Siskind
04 Dire Wolf - Grateful Dead
05 I Wanna Dance with Somebody - Whitney Houston

Various Artists - Covered: Tom Waits, Volume 4: 2013-2023 (A Fabio from Rio Guest Post)

Here's the fourth and last album in the "Covered" series celebrating the songs of Tom Waits by collecting cover versions.

Once again, I have to thank Fabio from Rio for being the prime mover behind putting these Waits albums together. He selected a large number of songs, and I narrowed it down to a reasonable amount. And one again, Fabio was nice enough to do the write up. So, take it away, Fabio:

---

Waits released his last studio record to date ("Bad as Me") in 2011. His later works revisit all earlier phases in fragmented, refined form. Waits alternates tender ballads with abrasive rhythm experiments, presenting a distilled, self-aware summary of his artistic language rather than a new stylistic break.

This last volume with performances from the 2010s and 2020s is mostly filled with female voices, hinting that, musically, Waits has become something of a ladies' man — at least for a younger generation of singers.

Here again we have a wild range of different styles, from forties-like doo-wop (Ice Cream Man) to eighties-drum-machine-electro-pop ("All Stripped Down"), from jazz and blues rock ("Fumblin' with the Blues", "Shore Leave") to americana and alt-country ("Walk Away", "Blue Skies").

We will also find adult contemporary ("In-Between Love"), dark cabaret ("Little Drop of Poison", "Starving in the Belly of a Whale"), R&B ("Such a Scream"), and confessional ballad ("Martha") in the mix.

Tom Jones makes "Bad as Me" his own. "Emotional Weather Report" is a deep cut taken from the little-known jazz and spoken-word Waits seventies album "Nighthawks on the Radio", which highlights Tom Waits' deadpan humor.

Other standouts are Rosanne Cash's "Time" and Aimee Mann's version for "Hold On" - which kind of reminded me, in spirit if not in sound, of the acappella version sung by Emily Kinney as Beth Greene in "The Walking Dead" - one of the most poignant moments of the entire series(*).

(*) You can check it out (along with Tom Waits' original version) at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNeGLUAUbgQ&list=RDGNeGLUAUbgQ

Georgie Fame & Friends - BBC Sessions, Volume 7: Friday Night Is Music Night, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Cheltenham, Britain, 5-3-2013

Here's another BBC album by Georgie Fame. This one is rather unusual in that it's kind of a celebration of him having over 50 years in the music business. It features some longtime collaborators as special guests: Alan Price, Zoot Money, and Madeline Bell.

Most of the songs were put together in a careful way, in order to tell the story of Fame's career, with interesting tidbits during the banter. For instance, the first song performed was one that he sang at a musical audition back in 1959.

The special guests didn't have really big roles, but each of them got at least one spotlight song. And most of Fame's most famous songs were performed before the concert was over.

The music here is unreleased. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is an hour and 36 minutes long.

Various Artists - MusiCares Tribute to Bruce Springsteen, Los Angeles Convention Center, Los Angeles, CA, 2-8-2013

A few days ago, I got a request to post the MusiCares tribute concert to Bruce Springsteen. I'm happy to do so, because I've been meaning to post more of these MusiCares concerts soon anyway. So here you are.

MusiCares has been holding annual tribute concerts since 1991. They cleverly have these concerts in Los Angeles, where the Grammy Awards take place, and hold them only a couple of days apart from the Grammies. That way, many musical stars are in town and able to participate. I've only posted one such album so far, the tribute to Brian Wilson in 2005. But I have seven more to post after this. Thus, today I've created a MusiCares Tribute label to help you find them all.

Bruce Springsteen is a very big name in music, and lots of other big names paid tribute to him here, including Elton John, Neil Young, and Sting. This was a particularly long concert as far as these MusiCares tributes go. It's easily the longest of all the ones I've found so far, which is fitting since Springsteen concerts are known for their length. Springsteen himself played five songs at the end, which again is more than usual.

This comes from a DVD. It hasn't been released on any audio format. The sound quality is excellent.

This album is two hours and 16 minutes long.

For the cover, I wanted a photo of Springsteen from this exact concert. But of the photos I saw, he was generally alone or with just one other person nearby, so I went with a group photo from this concert instead. From right to left: Zac Brown, Emmylou Harris, Ben Harper, Jackson Browne and Patti Scialfa. There were some distracting things in the background, so I used Photoshop to remove them.

Ron Sexsmith - Reasons to Believe, Volume 7: 2013-2016

Man, I've been really painfully slow posting the rest of this series of non-album tracks by Ron Sexsmith. But I finish everything eventually. This is the seventh and second to last album in this series.

All but two of the songs here have been officially released. Tracks 1, 2, 3, and 5 are bonus tracks from the "Forever Endeavor" album, with track 5 appearing only on deluxe edition versions. The other songs are from a bunch of different sources, like various artists compilation albums, soundtracks, and appearances on other musical acts' albums. As usual, check out the mp3 tags for more details.

The two unreleased songs are "Sisters of Mercy," from a Leonard Cohen tribute concert in 2013, and "Wait until the Sun Comes Up," from a concert in 2014.

As with past volumes, I want to mention that this series was the idea of Pete the Greek, and I wouldn't have done it without his instigation and continual help.

This album is 47 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Real Pandora - Ron Sexsmith
02 Least of My Worries - Ron Sexsmith
03 Wee Small Hours - Frank Sinatra
04 Pennies from Heaven - Bing Crosby
05 Life After a Broken Heart - Ron Sexsmith
06 Any Day Now - Breithaupt Brothers & Ron Sexsmith
07 Don't You - Marike Jager with Ron Sexsmith
08 Sisters of Mercy - Leonard Cohen

10 Circling Round the Drain - Ron Sexsmith
11 Half a Chance - Alex Cuba with Ron Sexsmith
12 Don't Wait - Mel Parsons with Ron Sexsmith
13 Off Somewhere - Lori Cullen & Ron Sexsmith
14 Rain - Flypaper Orchestra with Ron Sexsmith

Note that the last song, "Rain," appears to be "Pennies from Heaven" but with new lyrics written by members of the Flypaper Orchestra.

Here's the usual song list:

John Fogerty - Weeping in the Promised Land - Non-Album Tracks (2013-2022)

I recently got a request from a commenter to post more of my non-album track albums by John Fogerty. I only have one more by him before we get to the present day, more or less. So here it is. (And by the way, I still have lots of these stray track albums to post by various musical acts, but they've been on the backburner compared to BBC albums and other things recently.)

In 2013, the year of the first song in this album, Fogerty was 68 years old. In 2022, the year of the last song in this album, he was 77 years old. As I write this in 2025, he still has a strong voice and plays lead guitar very well, but it's obvious his songwriting creativity has slowed way down. He hasn't released an album of new original songs since 2007. So the songs here mostly consist of cover versions, plus acoustic versions of songs from earlier in his career, with only a couple new originals ("The Holy Grail" and "Weeping in the Promised Land").

The first song, "Sharp Dressed Man," is a ZZ Top song done with Billy Gibbons, the lead vocalist and lead guitarist in ZZ Top. Both Fogerty and Gibbons sang and played lead guitar on it. It's unreleased, from a bootleg. "New Orleans" is a cover of a 1960s hit performed in concert for a Dr. John tribute album. "Give Peace a Chance" and "In My Life" are John Lennon songs done for a Lennon tribute concert in 2015. They come from an official album of highlights of that concert. Tracks 5, 6, 11, and 12 are unreleased acoustic versions of hits Fogerty had earlier in his career, mostly from when he a member of Creedence Clearwater Revival. They're from radio or Internet shows. "Long as I Can See the Light" is particularly interesting since it was played on piano instead of guitar as usual.

"Love and War" is a song performed with country star Brad Paisley from his 2017 album, also called "Love and War." "I Won't Back Down" is a cover of the classic Tom Petty song. This is from an concert bootleg, and the sound quality is a little poorer than the other songs. "The Holy Grail" is a single from 2018, and "Weeping in the Promised Land" is a single from 2021.

"With a Little Help from My Friends" is a cover of the Beatles song from the 2019 official live album "50 Year Trip: Live at Red Rocks." However, it is done in the same style as Joe Cocker's famous hit cover version. "Walk, Don't Run," is a cover on the famous instrumental hit by the Ventures. Fogerty only performed it once in concert, on January 22, 2022, because it was done in honor of the lead guitarist for the Ventures, Don Wilson, who died earlier in the day. Finally, "The City of New Orleans" is yet another cover song of a classic, done from a various artists collection of train songs in 2022.

This album is 49 minutes long.

01 Sharp Dressed Man (John Fogerty & Billy Gibbons)
02 New Orleans (John Fogerty)
03 Give Peace a Chance (John Fogerty)
04 In My Life (John Fogerty)
05 Have You Ever Seen the Rain [Acoustic Version] (John Fogerty)
06 Centerfield [Acoustic Version] (John Fogerty)
07 Love and War (Brad Paisley & John Fogerty)
08 I Won't Back Down (John Fogerty)
09 The Holy Grail (John Fogerty with Billy Gibbons)
10 With a Little Help from My Friends (John Fogerty)
11 Bad Moon Rising [Acoustic Version] (John Fogerty)
12 Long as I Can See the Light [Piano Version] (John Fogerty)

Various Artists - Covered: Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards, Volume 2: 1980-2015

Here's the second and final "Covered" album highlighting the talents of the songwriting duo Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards.

As usual, the songs here are in rough chronological order. At the beginning time period for this album, 1980, Rodgers and Edwards were in crisis. They'd had hit after hit in the late 1970s. In fact, the first song here, "Upside Down" by Diana Ross, would top the singles chart in the U.S. and many other countries in 1980. However, pretty much all their hits songs were in this disco genre, and the popularity of disco was crashing hard in 1980. "Upside Down" was one of the last gasps. They basically broke up their wildly successful band Chic, keeping it together only because they owed more records to their record company. Rodgers in particular was depressed by the changing musical trends and developed a bad drug habit.

Disco was so reviled due to overexposure that people actually organized the mass destruction of disco records. Rodgers and Edwards responded by focusing most of their energies on writing and producing songs for other musical acts. Unfortunately, I can only include songs in which they're writers or co-writers, not songs they only produced. But Rodgers in particular became one of the hottest producers in the music business in the 1980s. For instance, he helped produce David Bowie's smash album "Let's Dance" in 1983 and Madonna's smash album "Like a Virgin" in 1984. He also produced albums for Duran Duran, Sheena Easton, Jeff Beck, Thompson Twins, Mick Jagger, the B-52's, Grace Jones, Al Jarreau, Steve Winwood, Cyndi Lauper, and many more. In the 1990s, he produced for Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, David Lee Roth, the Stray Cats, and again many more.

Note that I've included the song "Let's Dance" by David Bowie despite the fact that the song is solely credited to Bowie. That's because in my opinion Rodgers, who produced the song, totally deserved cowriting credit. Believe it or not, when Bowie first presented the song to Rodgers, it was a folk song, with just Bowie's voice and an acoustic guitar! Rodgers utterly transformed the song with a new arrangement, changing the chords, the key, the rhythm, and just about everything else but the basic melody and words. It went on to be a Number One hit in the U.S., Britain, and many other countries. Bowie even later cited Rodgers as the main reason for the song's massive success. (Note that a demo of the song was later released, but this is already after Rodgers had transformed the song, not the original acoustic demo.)

I would suspect that Rodgers often helped co-write songs as part of his production duties without getting official songwriting credit. One example where he did get credit was "Tick Tock" by Stevie Ray Vaughan (as part of the Vaughan Brothers), which he co-wrote with Vaughan.

The songwriting success for this duo slowed down as they got older, as is common. That was magnified by the fact that they focused much more on producing. Unfortunately, the Rodgers and Edwards partnership was cut short in 1996 when Edwards died of pneumonia while on tour with Chic in Japan. As I write this in May 2025, Rodgers is still alive and is 72 years old.

By the 2010s, one would have thought that the biggest songwriting success for Rodgers was behind him. But in 2013, he collaborated on four songs with Daft Punk, and of them was "Get Lucky." This would go on to be one of the biggest hits of the decade. It reached Number One in many countries, though it stalled out at Number Two in the U.S. for several weeks. With this new popularity, Rodgers' 1970s band Chic released their first single in 23 years with "I'll Be There" in 2015, and it went to the top of the dance singles chart (though it didn't make the pop singles chart).

Note that nearly all the songs presented here are the original hit versions. But one exception is "Thinking of You" by Paul Weller. He had a Top 20 hit with it in Britain in 2004. However, it first was a hit for Sister Sledge back in 1984. The other exception is "Everybody Dance." I included a hit version by Evolution in 1993. But it was first a hit for Chic back in 1977.

This album is 47 minutes long.

01 Upside Down (Diana Ross)
02 Backfired (Debbie Harry)
03 Why (Carly Simon)
04 The Jam Was Moving (Debbie Harry)
05 Let's Dance (David Bowie)
06 Kissing with Confidence (Will Powers with Carly Simon)
07 Tick Tock (Vaughan Brothers)
08 Everybody Dance (Evolution)
09 Thinking of You (Paul Weller)
10 Get Lucky (Daft Punk)
11 I'll Be There (Chic)

Rod Stewart - BBC Sessions, Volume 5: In Concert, BBC Radio Theatre, London, Britain, 5-16-2013

Here's another BBC album by Rod Stewart. This time, it's a concert from 2013.

The last BBC album I'd posted by Stewart is from 2004. Since that time until 2013, he'd put out more covers albums, especially those of the Great American Songbook. But in 2013, he finally released a studio album in which he wrote or cowrote nearly all of the songs, called "Time." It was the first such album in about 20 years. He said that he'd lost the creative inspiration to write songs for many years, but found it again while he was writing his autobiography. The album did surprisingly well in Britain, especially considering it didn't contain any big hit singles. In fact, it was the seventh best selling album in Britain that year.

As you'd expect, this album consists of songs from that album, plus his greatest hits. There's no sign of the Great American Songbook songs he'd recorded five albums of during the previous decade.

This album is unreleased. But the sound quality is excellent, as you'd expect from the BBC.

This album is an hour and 22 minutes long.

Ron Sexsmith - Reasons to Believe, Volume 6: 2012-2013

It's been almost a year since I last posted a volume in this series of non-album track albums for singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith. To be honest, I just kind of forgot about it, as I sometimes do with these things. Luckily, I recently remembered. I've made two more volumes after this, so hopefully I won't take nearly as long to get to those.

Seven out of the 14 songs here are officially unreleased. "Small Emotions" and "Family Tree Theme Song" are from TV shows. The other unreleased songs, tracks five through eight and 14, are either from concerts (with the audience cheering removed with the MVSEP program) or radio shows.

As for the officially released songs, most of them come from appearances on other artist's albums. A couple are from tribute albums.

As with past volumes, I want to mention that this series was the idea of Pete the Greek, and I wouldn't have done it without his instigation and continual help.

This album is 49 minutes long.

Here's a list of the original artists for each song:

01 Small Emotions - Ron Sexsmith
02 Regrets - Abalone Dots & Ron Sexsmith
03 Since I Don't Have You - Skyliners

Various Artists - Covered: Smokey Robinson, Volume 3: 1972-2013

This is the third and final "Covered" album celebrating Smokey Robinson, the songwriter, as opposed to Smokey Robinson, the singer. As with the previous two volumes, the focus is on songs he wrote or co-wrote. I've selected versions performed by others, even when the original hit version was performed by him.

The timing on this volume works out nicely, because 1972 was the farewell tour for his band Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, and after that it was all his solo career. Note though that the Miracles continued on without Robinson, and even had some more hits, especially "Love Machine."

In retrospect, maybe I should have made this a Covered album of Smokey Robinson and Marv Tarplin, who was the guitarist for the Miracles, because they wrote many songs together. Tarplin left the Miracles the same time Robinson did, and continued to sometimes write songs with him. For instance, the big hit "Cruisin'" was cowritten by them. Band member Pete Moore also wrote many hits with Robinson. He even co-wrote "Love Machine" mentioned above, without him.

Robinson's solo career wasn't as successful as his career with the Miracles, in my opinion. There were a lot of mellow, soulful ballads that didn't distinguish themselves from each other much. In fact, the name of one of his solo hits, "Quiet Storm," became the name of a radio format for that type of music. But he did write some classics, including two huge hits all over the world, "Cruisin'" and "Being with You."

That said, a majority of the songs here are later covers of songs that were first hits by the Miracles in the 1960s. So many of them have timeless appeal and have been hits multiple times for different music acts.

I broke my rule of trying not to include any performances by Smokey Robinson himself by including one, "Baby That's Bachatcha." It's not because that was his best performance or something like that. Rather, it was a solo hit worthy of inclusion here, and I didn't find any decent cover versions.

As I previously mentioned in an earlier volume, Robinson is still alive as I write this in 2024. But he's 84 years old, so he's basically retired from music. May his music be enjoyed and remembered long after he's gone.

This album is 54 minutes long.

02 Happy [Love Theme from 'Lady Sings the Blues'] (Michael Jackson)

The Rolling Stones - BBC Sessions, Volume 10: In Concert, Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm, Pilton, Britain, 6-29-2013

Here's the ninth and I assume last album of the Rolling Stones performing for the BBC. This time, it's a full concert from the massive yearly Glastonbury Festival in Britain. Despite it being 2013 and the festival has been happening steadily since about 1980, apparently this was the first time the Stones were invited to play there!

I mentioned in the previous album in this series, a BBC concert from 2006, that the Stones were getting long in the tooth. That even more so the case here. Lead singer Mick Jagger was 70 years old, which is frigging old for their style of energetic rock and roll. But in their defense, if you just listen to the recording, there's no way to tell. In my opinion, they still sound good and vibrant.

This is completely unreleased, and the sound is as good as you'd expect from the BBC. There were some problems though. The second half appears to be from a slightly different source. You can't tell based on the sound quality, but a difference was that, for that half, a BBC DJ talked between songs whenever possible. For instance, there was a couple of minutes of talking during the lengthy applause before the encore. But there was other talking as well. For instance, that annoying DJ talked over the last few seconds of "Midnight Rambler" and over the first few seconds of "You Can't Always Get What You Want."

So I deleted the DJ talking whenever possible, like during the encore applause and after the final song. I also used the UVR5 audio editing program to remove his voice when he talked over songs. Those are the ones with "[Edit]" in their titles. Hopefully, the recording is now just the Stones.

One nice thing about this concert is that it has Mick Taylor guesting on two songs, "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." Taylor was the band's main lead guitarist starting in 1969, but he quit the band in 1974 and was replaced by Ronnie Wood. In recent years (writing this in 2024), he's been a guest star at quite a few Stones concerts.

In 2013, the band hadn't put out a new studio album in ages. So this is nearly all their best, classic songs. The only new song performed here was "Doom and Gloom," which came out on a 2012 greatest hits album.

This album is two hours and six minutes long.

UPDATE: On May 10, 2025, I updated the mp3 download file. The music is exactly the same as before, but I changed the title (and cover art) after finding a previous BBC concert that I'd missed.

Various Artists - Covered: Jimmy Webb, Volume 2: 1972-2013

This is the second and last album in the "Covered" series for songwriter Jimmy Webb.

As I mentioned in Volume One, Webb was on fire in the late 1960s, writing a handful of the best songs all time, by anybody. Unfortunately, by the start of the time period on this album, his hot streak had cooled. Virtually every song on Volume One was a big hit, while there are only a few hits here. That said, the songwriting quality is still very high. A few of the songs here are considered classics. For instance, both "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress" and "Highwayman" have been covered dozens of times, and "All I Know" was a big hit for Art Garfunkel.

I'm not sure what happened exactly, but I suppose Webb's songwriting style changed. Instead of writing overtly poppy hits, he began writing more confessional singer-songwriter stuff. The same thing happened to others around the same time. For instance, Carole King's songwriting style changed drastically from the 1960s to the 1970s. I could have included many more worthy songs here, but I wanted to keep the emphasis on the stuff with obvious popular appeal, so I generally only included hits or songs that I thought should have been hits.

The lack of massive success for Webb's own albums is curious. Certainly he had the requisite talent, both with his singing voice as well as songwriting chops. It seems to me that he didn't do the obvious things to be popular. For instance, by 1970, the year of his first solo album ("Words and Music"), he had written at least a dozen really big hits for others. But on that album, he included exactly none of them. That was a huge missed opportunity, in my opinion. After that, his albums were typically critically acclaimed but little noticed by the public. It didn't help that he did almost no touring whatsoever until the 1990s, and even since then only very intermittently. He also had a really big drug problem until the 1990s.

In any case, some of these songs were written before when they appear chronologically on this album. For instance, "P.F. Sloan" first appeared on that 1970 album I mentioned above but the version here is from 2012. "Highwayman" first appeared on one of his albums in 1977, but wasn't a hit by the Highwaymen (a country supergroup consisting of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson) until 1985. But other than that, these generally were the first versions of each song, or close to it.

If there are any great songs of his that I've failed to include, please let me know and I'll consider adding them.

This album is 49 minutes long.

I don't know the details on when and where the cover photo was taken. But clearly he's significantly older than in the photo for Volume One.

Various Artists - Uncovered Ladies, Volumes 1 and 2 (1973-2021) (A Mike Solof Guest Post)

You may be familiar with a series of Beatles albums guest poster Mike Solof has made of special mixes he's made to Beatles songs. Now, he's turned that same mixing talent to editing some of his favorite songs sung by women. At my advice, he's split these edits into two albums. The first one, called "The Knowns," consist of famous songs that he has mixed to strip down some of the music to expose other parts that often go underappreciated. The second album, "The Lesser Knowns," does the exact same thing, but for songs that probably many listeners are unfamiliar with.

As is his usual style, Mike explains much more in his PDF file, which is included in the download files.

Volume 1 is 59 minutes long, and Volume 2 is one hour long.

Mike picked the cover art for both of the covers here. Since the title of this album is "Uncovered Ladies," he wanted photos to match that theme. Since the first album consists of famous songs, he has one of them, Shakira, on the cover. Since the second album is of mostly unknown songs, the cover is an unknown sexy woman.
