specifically pacific

i received a box of cards in the mail on monday that featured a large number of pacific cards, courtesy of the patp dude.  as i prepare for a post, i am clearing my scanned folder of pacific cards that were not a part of that package.  now then, enjoy some cards that span the pacific trading card company's existence.

1990 pacific legends johnny podres
such humble beginnings.

1993 pacific mike sharperson
starting in 1993, pacific took a slant towards the latino market.  in spanish, 'baseball' translates to 'beisbol', although 'base' translates to 'base'.

1993 pacific darryl strawberry
no, jardinero is outfielder, not underachiever

1994 pacific pedro astacio
in 1994, pacific added the crown to their cards, and the idea of the 'crown collection'.  it wasn't until later that they had a specific set called 'crown collection', so i just call this 1994 pacific

1994 pacific rafael bournigal
they even had their own version of the rookie cup.  sorry, novato cup

1994 pacific pedro martinez
petey is sporting the tim crews memorial patch

1994 pacific brett butler
while butler is showing the don drysdale/roy campanella memorial patch.  which reminds me, i need to do a specific memorials post for that one.

1994 pacific jim gott
wrigley field was a popular source of photos for pacific it would seem.

1994 pacific raul mondesi
mondesi was the novato of the year in 1994.  you can see both of the memorial patches on his card.

1994 pacific darryl strawberry
must be opening day in dodger stadium - there was really no other reason for the dodgers to break out the bunting in the early 90's

1994 pacific tim wallach
back in wrigley - with a lurking mike piazza on deck

unfortunately i didn't have any crazy pacific parallels to post here, but here's a 2000 pacific crown royale shaw green feature attractions insert
pretty tame by 2000 pacific standards.  i maintain that 2000 pacific invincible is one of the greatest releases in history.

anyway, i'll be showing off a bunch of pacific cards that brian sent in the not too distant future. i won't just limit it to dodgers, either.

they came from outer space

what a great haul of cards i received recently from david at tribe cards as a result of his generous 'tribe cards from outer space' giveaway.  in all the packs david opened last season, he only pulled one steve garvey card (1993 ted williams) and one davey lopes card (1987 topps record breaker), but there were other dodgers and random players i had drafted that were well represented.  like alfredo griffin.
that's his 1988 donruss baseball's best card, and this is his 1990 fleer card
i picked up alejandro pena somewhere along the way, and was rewarded with a 1987 fleer card
here's a 1992 topps stadium club mike sharperson card
and a couple of billy ashley cards - 1994 donruss triple play
and 1994 topps
also from 1994 topps, here's jim gott
james loney was represented by his 2012 topps a&g card
my strategy was to draft dodgers, members of the dodger team of my youth, and middle infielders - hoping for some double play turns.  that meant that i received some non-dodger cards of former dodgers, like this 2012 topps a&g black bordered mini of russell martin
and more yankees - tommy john
and rick rhoden
from 1988 donruss baseball's best.

i also wound up with tim wallach on my list, so received his baseball's best card
as well as that of fellow expo bryn smith
and giant craig lefferts
i can explain bryn smith - here's his regular 1988 donruss card, by the way
as he's a local guy made good and i sometimes think about pulling together a player collection.  but lefferts?  i forgot why i added him to my list until i saw his regular donruss card
featuring the right field pavilion at dodger stadium as a backdrop.

i've got some more cards from this package to show off, and i'll do so later today...

12 November 2013

it's been 20 years for these cards

here i am in 2013 posting cards from 1993.  when i started collecting in earnest in 1978, 20-year old cards were things that i never considered to be within my reach.  if there is a kid who started collecting this year, these cards are as old to him as those 1958 topps cards were to me.  yikes.

1993 action packed reggie smith
there just aren't enough reggie smith cards printed after 1983.

1993 fleer flair jim gott
two photos on one card!  a floating head and torso card!  this makes me think of those bad two-in-one school portraits from the 80's.

1993 fleer ultra eric karros ultra performers
fleer saw it's two photos on flair and raised itself to five photos on this card.  he hits! he runs! he looks to his right!

1993 ted williams jim gilliam goin' north
gilliam did go north - from spring training in florida all the way to montreal in 1951 and 1952.  then he went almost due south to brooklyn.

1993 topps kevin gross
and roger mcdowell
those two cards give us opposing views of dodger stadium

1993 topps stadium club mike scioscia
looks like scioscia has figured out that if you take selfies while looking up, your double chin goes away.

1993 upper deck darryl strawberry
the hero shot.  this card might make my top 20 dodger cards, if i ever were to make such a list.

1993 upper deck jody reed
and a signed version
reed signed the card for me through the mail about 18 years after the card was released.

it's probably a good bet that in a couple of months i will do another 20 years later post with some 1994 cards.

25 October 2012

just one more fernando ttm success. plus some others.

i realized when i posted my 1984 topps fernando ttm success this morning that there was still one more success i have had with el toro that i hadn't shown.  it's one of my favorite cards of his - his 1990 upper deck card
you've got dodger stadium peeking through, the home whites, a little bit of the red number, plus fernando putting the bat on the ball.  a very nice card.

somewhere along the line, i picked up this card, purportedly signed by fernando.  it's from the 1987 fleer baseball's best box set.
it was part of a dodger autograph lot i got for cheap.  the card that caught my eye in the lot was this one, a 1986 donruss orel hershiser diamond king card
i guess hershiser was going through a first name is enough phase.  certified hershiser autos are tough to come by and are fairly spendy most of the time.  but at least there would be his full name.  still, i am happy to have this card in my collection.

also included in the lot was a 1986 topps card signed by ken howell
and a 1985 leaf card signed by alejandro pena
i prefer 1985 leaf to 1985 donruss because i like the touch of green.  why they didn't get rid of the donruss logo altogether is beyond me.

speaking of donruss, here's a 1989 donruss jesse orosco card signed by the guy who closed out the 1986 world series for the mets
i also have this card as a certified orosco autograph from the 2004 donruss recollection collection release.
that's enough 1989 donruss for one post.

here's jim gott's 1993 dodgers police card
and finally dave stewart's 1983 topps card
stew made an appearance at a signing last year and signed a copy of his 1978 topps bk dodger/update card that should have been card for me.  i'll show that some other time.

thanks again fernando, for signing my cards! and thanks to you other guys for signing for someone else who sold their cards to me!

20 February 2011

if i had some padrographs for you...

something to remind me.  i wouldn't spend my life just wishing..

ah, good ol' flock of seagulls.

i don't have any padrographs for you, or for rod from padrographs abner to zimmer either for that matter.  what i do have are some padres cards and oregonians to send him after he sent me a package of dodgers cards.

i will now admit that trying to tie a flock of seagulls, baseball cards and a collector in oregon all together was probably a bad idea.  here are some of the cards i received.

1982 donruss mike scioscia
a nice way to start - dodger stadium, the angels' manager, and coach danny ozark lurking in the background.

speaking of lurkers, here's a 1994 pinnacle jim gott card
with the strongest man in socal, italian-american superstar slugger mike piazza sharing space with gott.

there was also a 1994 upper deck jim gott
again with a lurker of some sort.  my guess is that this is from the annual hollywood stars game and that's some sort of "celebrity" that would show up at those events like rodger lodge or corbin bernsen.  it kinda looks like christian slater, but i don't know that he was on that circuit back then.

another jim gott, this one a 1992 pinnacle
nice that they identify him as a 'relief pitcher'.  i didn't know.  cool how the photo is framed so that the ball is tucked nicely inside the upper corner of the card.

kind of like this 1984 fleer steve sax card that rod sent
or this 1990 score card of alejandro pena
pena also gets labeled as a 'rp'.  maybe this happened more often than i realized in the 90's.

here's another 1990 score card, this one of mike huff
huff is making his first appearance on the blog.  born in honolulu, he is at least the 4th hawaiian to have played for the dodgers (charlie hough, sid fernandez, and carlso diaz being the others i can think of off the top of my head).  huff played in a total of 12 games for the dodgers - all in august of 1990.  in his first major league at bat, he pinch hit for mike scioscia and singled off of tom glavine.  just over a week later, he hit his first big league home run, a solo shot off of future dodger dennis cook.  huff was claimed in the 1990 rule v draft by the indians, and he spent the rest of his career in the american league.  but we'll always have this 1990 score card to remember him by.
finally, i'll show this 2010 topps allen & ginter jonathan broxton 'this day in history' insert
it looks like broxton wants a paper, but the newsie is not paying any attention to him.

thanks for the cards rod, i'll get a package to you soon!
