ducky medwick was a dodger (twice), but is he a dodger here?

joe 'ducky' medwick is in the hall of fame, thanks to his monster years with the saint louis cardinals as part of the 'gas house gang'.  he hit .379 in the 1934 world series, helping the cards to a championship over the tigers, and three years later became the last national league player to win the triple crown (31 home runs, 154 rbi, .374 batting average).  he began and ended his career with the cardinals, but in between, he fit in two stints as a dodger.  yes, this is a double dipper post.

[this is the fiftysecond installment in the double dippers posts.  here are the previous posts - brett butler, omar daaleric young, nick willhitechris gwynn, mickey hatcherdave anderson, don zimmerrafael landestoy, dave hansen, jose vizcaino, hideo nomo, greg maddux, mike madduxjon garland, chan ho parkvicente romogene mauch, denny lewallyn, von joshua, joe moellerdioner navarro, rudy seanez, bart shirleyrandy wolf, ismael valdes, bobby castillo, mike devereaux, pete richert, jay johnstone, jesse orosco, lee lacy, giovanni carrara, jeff weaverted sizemore,  orel hershisertom goodwinjoe fergusoneddie murraymatt lukeken mcmullen, tim wallach, jerry grotedon suttonralph branca, todd hundley, elmer dessensguillermo motajoe beckwithjamie hoffmann, and babe herman.]

medwick was traded to the dodgers during the 1940 season, and in 1941, he helped them win their first pennant since 1920.  medwick hit .300 or better as a dodger until 1943, when he was batting at a .272 clip at the time his contract was purchased by the new york giants.  from there he went to boston (as a brave) in 1945 and was briefly signed by the saint louis browns in 1946.  he did not play for them, however, and instead signed on with the dodgers for the last half of the season, thus becoming a double dipper.  during that time, medwick hit .312 with 2 home runs, the first of which was the 200th blast of his career.  medwick signed with the yankees for the 1947 season, but was released before he appeared in a game.  he was signed by the cardinals and wound up finishing his career with them in 1948.

i have a 1960 fleer card of medwick wearing dodger blue,
but the concern today is centered around this 1993 action packed card
the fact that medwick is considered to be a cardinal and not a dodger is more than reasonable as he played in over 1200 games for the redbirds, and only 470 for brooklyn. that combined with the red borders on the card make it easy for me to assume that he is featured in his cardinal uniform.  however, the script on his chest and especially the thick underline is telling a different story.

one of my favorite baseball-reference features is the 'dressed to the nines' uniform database.  here, we see what the 1940 dodgers were wearing on the road (and the 1941 dodgers as well), and to me, it looks a lot like what medwick is wearing on the card above.  his other uniforms just don't compare.

fellow dodger collectors - add the 1993 action packed joe medwick card to your want lists!

the evolution of my oldest card

i'll take a break from my other evolutionary posts and jump on the 'evolution of my oldest card' bandwagon that has been perpetuated by night owl, the vintage sportscards blog and the number 5 type collection recently.

the first cards i ever owned were 1977 topps. i remember being given a pack probably around the world series that year, and opening it in the back seat of our car. the only card i really remember from that pack is this one, a 1977 topps mike schmidt card.
i previously feted this card here.  it was instantly the oldest card that i owned.  a few years later, i would be on the lookout for (and eventually the lucky recipient of) his rookie card, but only because of the presence of the penguin.

sometime in 1978, i came across this beauty, a 1976 topps reggie smith,
the details of which i wrote about here. this card then became the oldest card i owned.

there was some furious trading going on in my neighborhood in 1978, and i somehow landed a small sampling of 1971 topps cards, including this thrashed 1971 topps jim shellenback card
i have since sent this card to night owl as i upgraded it, but i still remember it fondly.

at some point that same year, i vacationed north of the border and was introduced to the wonder that was o-pee-chee. i also accompanied my parents to many a prairie antique barn, and, much like my reward in that 1976 topps reggie smith card, i found a few 1960 fleer cards, including mel ott, cy young, and this tris speaker card.
i told you i didn't object to antiquing!

in 1979, i was able to trade some giants cards to a guy who lived on the other side of my block. he humored me and gave me a 1955 bowman don hoak card.
for the first time, my oldest card was a dodger, and for a long long time, it was the oldest card in my collection.

fastforward to 2000 or so, and i decided that i would collect one card for each team, subset, and color combination variation from each topps set, from 1952 through 1977. at that time, i had complete sets from 1978 on (since then, i have completed the 1970 and 1977 sets, and am working on the 1971 and 1976 sets). it was fairly easy to do this, thanks to my topps coffee table book and ebay. the first 1952 topps card i purchased was this ralph branca card
it reigned as my oldest card for a couple of years before i purchased a vintage card lot on ebay that included this 1909-11 t206 dick egan card
as well as a 1951 topps luke easter red back. this t206 card was awesome, but i never really connected with it (i had purchased the lot more for the 1953 topps cards that were in it) so i sold it on ebay about a year and a half ago. around the same time, i also sold the luke easter card.

that meant that the 1951 topps gene hermanski
(and 1951 topps gil hodges) cards that i had acquired in the meantime were now my oldest cards.

that was until a couple of months ago when i plucked this 1951 bowman rex barney from the vintage bargain bin at the local card show.
i consider it to be older than the 1951 topps cards simply due to alphabetical order. the bowman card is the first card in my 1950's binder.

so there you have it. the evolution of my oldest card. i'm accepting new (older) entries if anyone has some pre-war dodgers to offer up!

my 6 in 30

better late than never...

let's pick a random dodger binder and see what happens!

1981 donruss don stanhouse.
between dave goltz and stanhouse it's a wonder the dodgers ever got back into the free agent market. here, stan the man unusual looks like mr. noodle's brother, mr. noodle.

1975 topps mike marshall highlights. a great card with alston, russell and yeager lurking. 106 games. good golly.

1960 fleer zach wheat.in full cryptkeeper mode.

1980 tcma chuck dressen. no real reason to pick this card, other than it is so non-descript.

1969 milton bradley jimmie hall.a non-dodger. how did that get in there? i think jimmie was with the angels for this issue, although you can't tell.

1991 topps fernando valenzuela.his last dodger card. in a classic fernando pose. i sent this one off for a ttm a while back, successfully, i might add.

so there you have it - 6 cards that are easy for a dodger fan (and a jimmie hall) to love!

is there anything better than vintage bargain bins?

well, obviously, there is. but vintage bargain bins are still pretty great. i ventured out to one of the local card shows a week or so ago, and spent most of my time digging through cards that were made before i was born. here's what i came up with.

1963 topps nl batting leaders, featuring tommy davis.not bad company for the 3-dog to be in. this was a buck as the front is a bit scuffed, but still, aaron, musial, frobby, and a dodger (and bill white, of course). awesome.

1959 topps danny mcdevitt

one of the few non-yellow 1959 topps dodger cards. 1959 was mcdevitt's 'career' year - he set personal bests in wins (10), complete games (6), saves (4) and strikeouts (106).

speaking of yellow 1959 topps dodgers, here's a 1959 topps charlie neal.1959 was a big year for charlie, too. career highs in runs, hits, doubles, triples (he led the league with 11), rbi and stolen bases. charlie was an all-star, won a gold glove, finished 8th in the mvp balloting and hit .370 in the world series to boot.

1959 topps joe pignatano.joe is a cousin of pete falcone. he was john roseboro's backup in 1959.

1960 fleer branch rickey.technically not a dodger, but still.

1960 fleer wilbert robinson.'uncle robbie' managed the brooklyn robins from 1914 to 1931, winning two pennants. they were the dodgers for one year prior to his taking over as manager, and then renamed the 'robins' after the new manager. when robinson retired, they went back to being known as the 'dodgers'.

1960 fleer dazzy vance.dazzy won 190 games for brooklyn over 12 seasons. he won a world series with st louis in 1934. if you think he looks rough, you should see the zach wheat card from this set.

1960 fleer arky vaughan.best known as a pirate, this hall of famer finished his career with 4 years in brooklyn. he lost 3 years during his time in brooklyn to what i assume to be military service.

1964 topps bob miller.looks like bob is playing catch in the front yard.

1964 topps frank howard.hondo without his glasses. 1964 was his final year with the dodgers, although topps would show him with the blue on his 1965 card.

1964 topps wes parker/john werhas.wes parker stuck, but john werhas appeared in only 40 games over three seasons with the dodgers. to my knowledge, he did not appear on 'batman' or 'the brady bunch'. game, set, match parker.

1965 topps jim brewer.no relation to bernie.

1965 topps johnny podres.1965 was podres' last full year with the dodgers. he was sent to detroit after appearing in just one game for the dodgers in 1966.

1966 topps john roseboro.roseboro is best known for taking over the catching for campanella and for getting struck in the head by juan marichal's bat. he also won his second gold glove in 1966, but went just 1 for 14 in the world series against the orioles that year.

1968 topps hank aguirre.1968 was aguirre's only year with the dodgers. he appeared in 25 games and had 3 saves.

1969 topps nl strikeout leaders bill singer.and two other guys. singer had 227 strikeouts in 1968 and led the league with a 8k/9ip ratio.

now we get to the less-vintage (meaning cards i was alive for)

1976 topps steve rogers.slowly making progress on the 1976 set.

1977 topps roy hartsfield and coaches.i like the variation. i thought i had this and the mariners version, but i didn't. still looking for the mariners version.

1978 topps lou piniella.

a 1978 topps yankee/yankee stadium shot card that is not a) a game action shot or b) taken in front of the 'brut' sign.

and now for something completely modern.

2007 topps chrome chad billingsley blue refractor.blue refractors rule.

2008 donruss threads steve garvey parallel #d to something or other

my inner joe collector came through for this one.

there you have it. i'm ready for more bargain bins.
