clearing out the scanned folder - dodger edition

scans of cards sometimes languish in my scanned folder. newly acquired cards or cards i've stumbled upon while going through my collection get scanned sometimes without a true purpose.  these are such cards.

2008 donruss playoff prime cuts don sutton
aside from the infield, i think sutton might the guy that i am most pleased to see pop up in new releases.

1993 topps stadium club mitch webster
at one time, i thought about doing a full on mitch webster series.  for some reason, i consider him to be perhaps the most obscure dodger to be featured on the most number of cards.

2001 upper deck legends gary sheffield
sheff had some monster seasons for the dodgers

2000 topps gallery gary sheffield
this is a fantastic card. i love that topps kept the photo even though the netting is visible in the foreground.

1992 silver star hologram dodger stadium card (front)
and back
i believe it was night owl that brought this must-have for my dodger stadium card collection to my attention. it was a giveaway back in 1992 when i was busy studying for finals and getting ready to graduate from college instead of paying attention to promotions at chavez ravine.

2005 bowman brian sprout
2005 bowman brian sprout gold parallel
2005 bowman chrome brian sprout
sprout is the head coach at the local high school these days.  i've met him a couple of times, but never mentioned that i have some of his cards.

1996 pinnacle zenith mike piazza
and 1997 fleer circa mike piazza (back)
it sure looks to me that the back of the circa card is a reverse negative and not a purposefully done lefty switch that fleer did on some of their other cards.

2002 topps super teams 1955 brooklyn dodgers (duke snider, pee wee reese, and jackie robinson)
the red numbers are missing (they were added to the jerseys in 1952), and so is gil hodges.  this super teams set flew under the radar, and i don't know how i came across the few cards i have in my set from it.  anybody else recall this set?

fun at the ballpark, indeed

it is odd to think that, after nearly seven years of posting, i have not yet featured this 1993 donruss triple play card of former dodger reliever roger mcdowell
so, when it arrived recently in a trade package from bo at baseball cards come to life, i figured that now was the time.  here's the back

mcdowell's teammates may have been amused by him wearing outrageous things, but i as a fan will just accept good baseball in a beautiful setting.  a setting like dodger stadium.  that's where this next card bo sent comes in.
that's a 1996 score select bret boone card, featuring a photo taken in dodger stadium.  the unnamed dodger in the scene is roberto kelly, who twice stole second against boone and the reds on july 30, 1995.  the wrist guard and red glove/sweat bands were a big clue as to the runner's identity, but really it was either him or chad fonville, and with kelly wearing number 21 it was fairly obvious.

this next one is easier.
that would be mitch webster sliding in while jose oquendo turns two in dodger stadium on his 1996 donruss card.

moving away from dodger stadium (to tatooine, in fact), we see rafael furcal sliding in front of freddy sanchez on sanchez's 2008 bowman card
as sanchez makes the double play pivot.

staying on tatooine, here's a 1993 score select joe girardi card
that would obviously fit into that particular mini collection of mine if it weren't already destined for the lurker collection thanks to dodger dave hansen making an appearance on the back
there are many more cards that bo sent that i'll be showing over the next few days - thanks for the cards bo!

hand me downs that fit my collection perfectly

i used to receive hand me down clothes from my cousins in the late 1970's.  that was a dangerous time for hand me downs due to the many strange fashions of the time. these days, my hand me downs come in the way of cards, and night owl's unwanted cards are among the ones i appreciate the most.

thanks to the large number of folks who send cards to night owl, he accumulates lots of cool dodger doubles, and so i wind up with some nice hand me downs. should i say hand me downs again, or just show some cards?  right.

2011 topps roy campanella cognac parallel
the mustache was not a good look for campy.  my favorite thing about these retired player short print cards in 2011 was the dirty/aged baseball topps used behind the logo.  it was a nice touch.

2011 topps jonathan broxton diamond anniversary parallel
i must have missed the trade last year that sent broxton from cincinnati to milwaukee.  it's good to see his k/9 ratio is back up with the brew crew, but so is his era, unfortunately.

2008 topps chrome andruw jones xfractor
even andruw jones dodger cards are welcome.  i'm not entirely sure night owl had a double of this one - he may just have wanted andruw out of his house.

2011 bowman platinum prospects allen webster xfractor
webster was part of the big 2012 trade between the dodgers and the red sox. he started 18 games for boston over the 2013 and 2014 seasons, and is now in the diamondbacks organization.

it's not all parallels and shiny stuff that comes from night owl - there are other cool cards like this 1989 jj nissen superstars orel hershiser oddball
jj nissen is a bread company, by the way.

i even accept junk (or is this just trash) cards like this 1995 fleer ramon martinez card
it's still a dodger card, and it might just be one that i need.

here's a 1998 fleer metal universe card of catcher henry blanco
actually, blanco never caught for the dodgers.  he made his big league debut with the dodgers in 1997 and hit a single in his first at bat and a home run in his third, and played third base and first - not catcher.  he spent 1998 in the minors and then began a ten-team journey through the major leagues that lasted through the 2013 season.

here's another backstop who actually did catch for the dodgers - todd hundley on a 1999 upper deck victory card
hundley had two stints with the dodgers, the second of which was pretty bad.

2003 donruss diamond kings odalis perez silver foil parallel
perez was actually worthy of being a diamond king following the 2002 season. he posted the best numbers of his career, winning 15 games with an era of 3.00 and a whip of 0.99.  he also gave us a ball during a game in anaheim in 2006.

2002 topps roy campanella 1952 reprints
and so the post comes full circle, although this is a clean shaven campy.

i've got more night owl hand me downs to show some other time, and i'm pulling together some of my own to send back his way.  thanks greg!

an invitation from steve garvey and more via jaybarkerfan's junk

i don't know how he does it, but wes from jaybarkerfan's junk continues to find some great stuff to send my way.  he recently sent me an oversized package that contained this gem
i had never heard of sports america club, but i figure i would have signed up if i had been aware.  of course, that's when i thought it was a 1981 or 1982 endeavor, due to garvey showing up with a dodger hat on the front of the letter and the choice between donruss, topps, fleer, or 'other' as my favorite card manufacturer on the back.  however, it turns out that this was a thing in 1988 - the year after garvey retired.  here's an image of an actual sports america club kit that i found on ebay
note the presence of 1988 cards around the inset photo of garvey in a dodger helmet.  knowing it was from '88, i can say that i would not have joined, even though i was promised a personalized, signed photo of the garv himself.

wes also included a (sort of) bipping of kevin gross cards - four 1991 fleer cards
and a singular 1992 upper deck card
there was also a legitimate bipping of 2007 tristar prospects plus chris withrow cards
that's one - here are the other four
my collection went from zero of these cards to five in the matter of one package.

rounding out some of the more notable cards wes sent, we have the fantastically sunglassed steve yeager on his 1981 fleer card
pedro guerrero's last dodger card from 1988 topps
which may have been included in a sports america club kit, now that i think about it

a 1992 topps stadium club mitch webster
because nobody else is showing you mitch webster cards

a target red parallel of hanley ramirez's 2013 topps card
and a 2013 topps museum collection hyun-jin ryu
which actually did the traditional korean last name first thing. a tip of the cap to topps and to wes for another great package of dodger goodness!

the second daily dose of the dimwit

not a group break this time, but rather a good old fashioned trade!  yes, sam at the daily dimwit and i complete a trade recently, and this is some of what he sent my way.

first up,  a well loved 1958 topps pee wee reese card
paired with a largely ignored 1984 topps dave anderson card
i suppose all these cards have in common are the position (although pee wee gets some hot corner cred), the team, and the yellow background.  it's always a nice surprise to get some 1950's stuff in a blind trade package - even better when it's pee wee.

here are some clayton kershaw minis - from 2011 topps allen & ginter
and from 2011 topps gypsy queen
ginter wins.  ted lilly may be seeing his turn as the other dodger starter to be featured in sets coming to a close with the arrival of zack greinke and the dude from asia.  no, not the band asia, the continent.  so, enjoy these 2011
and 2012 topps gypsy queen minis while you can
duke snider is not likely to be removed from the retro set checklists anytime soon.  here's his 2012 topps gypsy queen mini
more gypsy queen stuff was in the package, like this matt kemp parallel
and the mini kemp
and dee gordon sliding stars inserts
kemp looks like he is doing scissor twists.  here's the full size version of the gordon card - i had it laying around
it looks better non-miniaturized.

here's an allen webster card from 2011 bowman platinum
webster is now with the red sox, thanks to the adrian gonzalez deal.  he pitched at aa last year with modest results.

one pitching prospect i hope to goodness that ned doesn't deal away is zach lee
this is a 2012 bowman sterling autographed card - the second lee auto i have in my collection.

thanks sam!
