sunday morning target dodgers - featuring an honorary member of the infield

another sunday, another 15 cards from a 1990 target dodger 100th anniversary set sheet given away at dodger stadium in 1990.  enjoy.

rick auerbach

auerbach filled in for the injured bill russell for the first three months of the 1975 season.  he first appeared as a dodger during the 1974 season, although the team acquired him from the brewers in april of 1973.  auerbach spent the rest of that season in albuquerque and had his contract purchased by the brewers in september. a month later, the dodgers purchased his contract back, and he made the big league roster for the 1974 season and even appeared in the postseason that year.  very nearly a dodger double dipper, auerbach stayed with the dodgers through the 1976 season and was traded to the mets for hank webb prior to the 1977 campaign.

billy cox

cox was the dodgers' third baseman from 1948 through 1954.  this 'boy of summer' was acquired in a trade with the pirates following the 1947 season that was prompted in part by the aversion some dodgers had to playing with jackie robinson. unfortunately for cox, he was traded to the orioles prior to the dodgers' world championship season of 1955.

tim crews

along with tim leary, tim crews was part of the return package that the dodgers received from the brewers in exchange for greg brock.  crews was part of the dodger bullpen from 1987 through 1992, although he did make 4 spot starts over that span.  he also had 15 saves in a total of 281 appearances as a dodger.  following the 1992 season, crews signed with the indians as a free agent, but died in a boating accident during spring training.  both the dodgers and indians wore memorial patches for crews (the indians' patch also honored steve olin who was also killed in the accident) during the 1993 season.

fred frankhouse

kudos to frankouse's parents for not naming him frank.  fred frankhouse pitched 10 seasons for the cardinals and braves before joining the dodgers prior to the 1936 season. used primarily as a starter, frankhouse was 13-10 the first season with the dodgers, and then flipped that record the next.  1938 was his last season with the club, and he posted a 3-5 record while pitching mainly out of the bullpen.

harry harper

harper pitched for the senators from 1913-1919, showing some success with decent era in most of those seasons.  he also led the league in losses in 1919 with 21, thanks in part to the poor team for which he played and his career worst (up to that point) era of 3.72.  harper was traded to the red sox for the 1920 season, and then dealt again to the yankees in the waite hoyt deal prior to the 1921 season.  after sitting out the 1922 campaign, harper joined the robins in 1923 and made a solitary start for them.  he lasted 3.2 innings against the giants on may 8, allowing 6 earned runs, as his big league career came to an end.

tommy holmes

holmes was the national league home run champion in 1945 as a member of the boston braves.  he hit 28 homers that year, and also drove in 117 runs, both career highs.  while he still hit for average in the next three seasons, he never approached those power numbers again.  in fact, holmes had hit a total of 38 home runs over the next 6 seasons before signing with the dodgers in 1952.  he failed to hit any home runs as a dodger, although he played in only 31 games during that '52 season.  holmes hit .111 for the dodgers during the regular season, and then was 0 for 1 in his final appearances as a dodger during the 1952 fall classic.

charlie irwin

irwin finished his 10-year big league career with a season and a half as a member of the brooklyn superbas. acquired after being released by the reds during the 1901 season, irwin played third base and hit .253 over the remainder of his career.

von joshua

joshua was a dodger double dipper whose last appearance in his first go-around as a dodger came with him making the final out in the 1974 world series. the second time, the dodgers brought joshua back to the majors from the mexican league in 1979.  overall, joshua appeared in more games with the dodgers than any other team for which he played, although his best season was probably his 1975 campaign spent with the giants.

brickyard kennedy

according to baseball reference. kennedy's nickname was actually 'roaring bill', not brickyard.  strange.  he pitched for the grooms/bridegrooms/superbas from 1892 through 1901, winning as many as 25 games in 1893 and more than 20 four times.  he was 177-149 for brooklyn overall before spending the 1902 season with the new york giants and the 1903 campaign with the national league champion pittsburgh pirates. in fact, kennedy's final major league appearance came with the pirates in the inaugural world series, starting (and losing) game 5.

bill krueger

krueger's dodger career consisted of three appearances over the course of two seasons.  he was acquired by the club from the a's during the 1987 season and made 2 relief appearances as a dodger in september.  he re-signed with the dodgers for the 1988 campaign, but began the year in albuquerque.  krueger was eventually called up and was given the july 4 start against the cardinals, his lone big league appearance of the season.  krueger allowed 3 runs in 2.1 innings of work that day and was sent back down to triple-a. the dodgers traded him to the pirates for jim niedlinger following the end of the regular season.

paul minner

in 1946, and then again in 1948 and 1949, minner was a pitcher on the dodgers' roster.  he appeared in a total of 58 games and posted a record of 7-5 with a 3.16 era.  you can learn much more about minner in this post, courtesy of another dodger blogger.

joe pignatano

pignatano, a brooklyn native, debuted with the dodgers in 1957 - the team's last year in brooklyn.  he remained with the team as they moved to los angeles, and served as the team's backup backstop through the 1960 season.

ron roenicke

roenicke was dodger #3 on the 1982 topps steve sax/mike marshall rookie card.  he was also an outfielder on the team who played in 212 games for the dodgers from september of 1981 through july 18, 1983 when he was released.  roenicke went on to play for the mariners, padres, giants, phillies, and reds before rejoining the dodger organization as a minor league manager and later a big league coach. he is currently the manager of the milwaukee brewers, adding one more manager to the list who played for tommy lasorda.

joe shaute

shaute pithed for the robins/dodgers from 1931-33 after spending 9 seasons with the indians.  he was 21-19 for brooklyn in that span, with a 4.32 era compiled over 100 appearances.  while with the indians, shaute struck out only 402 batters in 1,447 innings pitched, but babe ruth accounted for over 30 of those k's according to baseball reference.

bobby valentine

bobby v was the dodgers' first round pick in their vaunted 1968 draft.  he made his big league debut just over a year later, and would appear in 5 games as a 1969 september call-up.  he returned to the majors in 1971 and 1972, playing all over the outfield and everywhere in the infield except for first base.  after hitting .274 in 119 games in 1972, valentine was included in the trade that sent frank robinson to the angels.  valentine was just 23 and was hitting .302 when he tore up his knee in may of '73 after getting his spikes caught in the angels' outfield fence. the injury plagued him for the remainder of his playing career that included post-anaheim stints in san diego, new york, and seattle.  valentine never played for lasorda in the majors (he did in the minors), but he did go on to manage in the majors and according to reports, would have been tommy's choice to guide the dodgers instead of davey johnson had valentine not already been managing the mets.  we also have valentine to thank for making tommy a coach on the 2001 national league all-star team which brought us the fantastic footage of tommy getting upended in the third base coaches box by a wayward bat.

the topps dodgers autograph project - the early los angeles years

in case you missed the first installment, i am taking the lost collector's yankee project and putting my dodger spin on it.  so now we are into the los angeles years.  all of these autographs were obtained through the mail, and were free of charge. 

joe pignatano, 1958 topps

i've posted this one before.  pignatano was a brooklyn native who played in a handful of games as a hometown boy done good before moving to the west coast with the team.  he stayed with the dodgers until his contract was purchased by the a's prior to the 1961 season.  other players who have signed their 1958 topps cards for me include don zimmer.  that's it.

fred kipp, 1959 topps

kipp also went west with the club, having made an appearance with the team in 1957.  1958 was his big year in the majors, as he went 6-6 in 40 appearances.  he pitched in 2 games in 1959, and then was traded to the yankees prior to the 1960 season.  i have a few other 1959 topps cards that were signed through the mail - carl erskine, dick gray, and bob lillis.

chuck essegian, 1960 topps

essegian joined the dodgers for the latter part of the 1959 season.  he came from saint louis in exchange for dick gray, the man who had hit the first home run in los angeles dodger history.  essegian hit some home runs, too, as it turned out.  in the 1959 world series against the white sox, he had not one, but two pinch hit home runs.  the first one came in game 2 of the series with the dodgers down a game and trailing by a run in the 7th inning.  essegian''s blast tied the game, and a couple of batters later, charlie neal put them ahead to stay with his second home run of the game.  some other former dodgers who have signed their 1960 cards for me through the mail include roger craig (with fee), don demeter, and bob lillis.

i posted this one not too long ago - it's the most recent 1961 topps card i have had signed through the mail.  others in my collection include don demeter, don newcombe (with fee), and joe pignatano.

norm sherry, 1962 topps

sherry debuted in the big leagues with a bang.  on april 12, 1959, he was the dodgers' starting catcher against the cubs.  on the mound that day was sandy koufax, the pitcher whom sherry suggested should just relax and take something off of his fastball to be more effective.  while koufax only lasted three innings that day, sherry played the whole game.  he was hit by a pitch in his first big league at bat, and then hit a two-run single his next time up.  sherry didn't appear in another game until september, but he was back in la each season from 1960 through 1962.  he even occasionally caught his brother larry.  i chose to feature sherry's card simply because i had not yet posted it on the blog.  other 1962 topps cards that i have received signed through the mail include tommy davis (with fee), willie davis (with fee), frank howard (with fee), wally moon (with fee), ron perranoski, pete richert, and daryl spencer.

ed roebuck, 1963 topps

same goes here for roebuck.  i've had his 1963 card  sitting in my scanned folder for a while now, but have never gotten around to showing it off.  roebuck was a member of the world champion brooklyn dodgers in 1955 (his rookie season) and he threw a couple of scoreless innings in the fall classic that year.  he also pitched in the 1956 world series.  unfortunately, roebuck did not pitch in the majors in 1959 due to injury, and so he missed out on another opportunity to pitch in the world series.  roebuck had a big year in 1962, winning 10 games and saving another 9.  he was traded to the senators in july of 1963, however, and eventually finished his career in philadelphia three years later.  the other 1963 cards i have signed through the mail include joe moeller, wally moon (with fee), and don zimmer.

ken mcmullen, 1964 topps

this is another card that i was saving for a different post - most likely mcmullen's double dipper post - but it fits here as part of the topps dodgers autograph project.  mcmullen first appeared in the big leagues in 1962, and he played in a total of 109 games for the dodgers between then and 1964.  after the 1964 season, he was traded to the senators in the claude osteen/frank howard deal.  he had his best years in washington and then in california with the angels before returning to the dodgers in a reserve role.  mcmullen gets the nod to represent 1964 over the other signed ttm cards in my collection, including willie davis (with fee), pete richert, and dick tracewski.

joe pignatano through the mail success!

eighty-year old joe pignatano recently (and very kindly) signed and returned three cards i had sent him. they were his 1958 topps card, his 1961 topps card,

and his 2005 topps all time fan favorites card.

the brooklyn native signed with the hometown team in 1948 and made his debut for them in 1957, their final year in the borough. his last year in los angeles was 1960 as he was purchased by the kansas city athletics prior to the 1961 season. he finished his career as an original met in 1962.

i tried to trace joe's 'trade legacy' and wound up hitting a dead end in 1989. that's not too bad for a guy who last played in 1962. this is how it works:

in 1961, joe was traded for jose tartabull, who was traded in 1966 for ken sanders. sanders was traded for don mincher in 1970 and mincher was traded for lew krausse in 1971. krausse was traded for ken brett in 1971, who was then traded in 1975 for doc medich. medich was traded for phil garner in 1977, and garner was in turn traded for johnny ray in 1981. in 1987, johnny ray was traded for miguel garcia, who last played in 1989.

i am sure you are all aware of johngy's beat (if not, check it out - he's got pictures of himself with buck rodgers and the riddler, for goodness sake). he recently put out a call for some 'mike squires cards that should have been' and i sent him a 1986 topps card that i put together. for that minimal amount of work, johngy hit my want list with a fervor. let's see what mike squires hath wrought:

1960 topps clem labinea closer before there were closers.

1960 topps carl furillo world series game 3furillo's two-run single in the bottom of the 7th broke a 0-0 tie. yes, back in the 50's you could hit a single and it would be commemorated on a baseball card.

1960 topps johnny podresand 1966 topps johnny podres podres' last dodgers card. he appeared in just 1 game for the dodgers in 1966 before being sent to the tigers.

1968 topps wes parker

from 1967 to 1977, dodger first basemen (parker and garvey) won every gold glove, except for 1973 (mike jorgenson). in fact, parker won 6 straight to garvey's 4. one reason why parker is on the rawlings all-time gold glove team. not bad for a guy who also got to play greg brady's teacher's boyfriend.

is there anything better than vintage bargain bins?

well, obviously, there is. but vintage bargain bins are still pretty great. i ventured out to one of the local card shows a week or so ago, and spent most of my time digging through cards that were made before i was born. here's what i came up with.

1963 topps nl batting leaders, featuring tommy davis.not bad company for the 3-dog to be in. this was a buck as the front is a bit scuffed, but still, aaron, musial, frobby, and a dodger (and bill white, of course). awesome.

1959 topps danny mcdevitt

one of the few non-yellow 1959 topps dodger cards. 1959 was mcdevitt's 'career' year - he set personal bests in wins (10), complete games (6), saves (4) and strikeouts (106).

speaking of yellow 1959 topps dodgers, here's a 1959 topps charlie neal.1959 was a big year for charlie, too. career highs in runs, hits, doubles, triples (he led the league with 11), rbi and stolen bases. charlie was an all-star, won a gold glove, finished 8th in the mvp balloting and hit .370 in the world series to boot.

1959 topps joe pignatano.joe is a cousin of pete falcone. he was john roseboro's backup in 1959.

1960 fleer branch rickey.technically not a dodger, but still.

1960 fleer wilbert robinson.'uncle robbie' managed the brooklyn robins from 1914 to 1931, winning two pennants. they were the dodgers for one year prior to his taking over as manager, and then renamed the 'robins' after the new manager. when robinson retired, they went back to being known as the 'dodgers'.

1960 fleer dazzy vance.dazzy won 190 games for brooklyn over 12 seasons. he won a world series with st louis in 1934. if you think he looks rough, you should see the zach wheat card from this set.

1960 fleer arky vaughan.best known as a pirate, this hall of famer finished his career with 4 years in brooklyn. he lost 3 years during his time in brooklyn to what i assume to be military service.

1964 topps bob miller.looks like bob is playing catch in the front yard.

1964 topps frank howard.hondo without his glasses. 1964 was his final year with the dodgers, although topps would show him with the blue on his 1965 card.

1964 topps wes parker/john werhas.wes parker stuck, but john werhas appeared in only 40 games over three seasons with the dodgers. to my knowledge, he did not appear on 'batman' or 'the brady bunch'. game, set, match parker.

1965 topps jim brewer.no relation to bernie.

1965 topps johnny podres.1965 was podres' last full year with the dodgers. he was sent to detroit after appearing in just one game for the dodgers in 1966.

1966 topps john roseboro.roseboro is best known for taking over the catching for campanella and for getting struck in the head by juan marichal's bat. he also won his second gold glove in 1966, but went just 1 for 14 in the world series against the orioles that year.

1968 topps hank aguirre.1968 was aguirre's only year with the dodgers. he appeared in 25 games and had 3 saves.

1969 topps nl strikeout leaders bill singer.and two other guys. singer had 227 strikeouts in 1968 and led the league with a 8k/9ip ratio.

now we get to the less-vintage (meaning cards i was alive for)

1976 topps steve rogers.slowly making progress on the 1976 set.

1977 topps roy hartsfield and coaches.i like the variation. i thought i had this and the mariners version, but i didn't. still looking for the mariners version.

1978 topps lou piniella.

a 1978 topps yankee/yankee stadium shot card that is not a) a game action shot or b) taken in front of the 'brut' sign.
