too many tigers sporting memorial patches

for quite a while now, i've been posting about memorial patches on mondays.  i still have quite a few to get to, but two of the patches i have already covered include the ernie harwell patch worn by the tigers in 2010, and the sparky anderson patch that the motor city kitties wore in 2011.  dennis from too many verlanders recently sent me a package that included a whole mess of tigers wearing these patches.  here are two cards of brennan boesch from 2010 topps update that show the harwell patch.
these cards are both great examples of the patch that i did not have in my collection previously.  i'll keep the valverde in the memorials binder, however.

dennis also included a whole mess of cards showing the sparky anderson patch.
there we have cards from 2011 topps and 2011 topps update, and here are a couple (plus a parallel) from 2012 topps
boesch is back with a 2012 topps allen & ginter card
while alex avila and miguel cabrera show the patch on their 2012 topps archives cards
boesch and miggy also show the patch on their 2012 topps gypsy queen cards
and then there are the 2012 bowman cards
the tigers' american league central division rival kansas city royals also wore a memorial patch in 2011 (for former pitcher paul splittorff), and dennis threw this 2012 bowman billy butler card in the package as well.
he added another memorial patch, too - the harry caray memorial patch can be seen on this 1999 ud choice kerry wood starquest insert
although this was included as part of the complete 30-card set in a separate package.  i had claimed some cards from dennis, and he included this set (which contained a single dodger - adrian beltre)
as well as a set of the 1990 fleer league standouts insert set, which included current dodger manager don mattingly wearing pinstripes
i'll show some of the cards that i claimed in a later post.

there was yet another package that dennis sent recently.  it contained one card that he picked up at a card show with me in mind - a 2005 topps pristine steve garvey uncirculated card
i've got one in the garvey collection already, but now i have one for the dodger binder, too.

thanks dennis!

i saw the saenz - a few more from the flea market

here are a few more cards i picked up at that flea market last weekend.  just dodgers this time.

2005 topps total olmedo saenz
i think this is a silver parallel.  i couldn't leave olmedo the tomato in the dime box.  in fact, i would guess that this is one of about three olmedo saenz as a dodger cards i have in my collection.

here's a 2010 topps card your mom threw out 1956 jackie robinson.
original back, to boot!

even though i already have at least two copies of this card, i couldn't leave o-pee-chee behind.   i only wish there were more than just this 1985 o-pee-chee rick honeycutt.
here's a nice orel hershiser card from 1993 score.
and a 1996 ud collector's choice chad fonville arizona fall league card
i probably have about a dozen of the chan ho park afl card, but i don't think i had a chad until now.

here are a couple of 1999 ud collector's choice (or is it just ud choice?) - charles johnson
and ellis burks
the reason i bought a giant card is that i am pretty sure that cj is making an appearance there in the upper left hand corner.  giant cards are better when dodgers are present.

i like this 2004 upper deck sp authentic shawn green card
because of the dodger stadium image in the background.

that works for me better than upper deck's use of a '3' in place of a 'g' on this 2005 ud trilogy card
still, i always enjoy adding a jeff kent card to the collection.  especially for a dime.  from a flea market that i didn't know existed. that i only noticed because i was driving by at the right time.  or is that the ri3ht time.

here comes rickey

yes, we're still turning two here on the blog, and right now damion easley has his hands full, literally, as  an a's player is sliding towards him on this 1999 upper deck card.
the o.co or network associates coliseum or whatever it is these days is an oft featured locale for double play turns for some reason, and we've seen quite a few athletics getting forced out at second base as a result, including rickey henderson.  and it just so happens to be henderson who is breaking up the double play in this case, as we see on damion easley's 'same play' 1999 upper deck choice card (apparently it was no longer collector's choice)
as far as i can tell, rickey is out on a 1st inning 1-4 forceout on may 7, 1998 as ben grieve makes it safely to first thanks to rickey's slide.  grieve would be forced out at second on the next play to end the inning.  thanks baseball reference!

here's bill mueller's card from the same set (hello tom goodwin)
and a denny hocking card from 2001 upper deck victory
let's get in the way back machine for this 1990 score jeff treadway card
not sure why i haven't shown that one before.

staying with the braves, here is their other double play turning jeff - jeff blauser on his 1998 upper deck collector's choice card
and then later as a cub on his 1999 upper deck card
1999 upper deck also gives us dp turns from former dodger wilton guerrero
shane halter
kevin stocker
and that perennial twin killing turning machine, walt weiss
among others.

here's tony womack's 1999 fleer ultra card
and miguel cairo's 1999 pacific crown collection card
and finally, mike benjamin's 2000 topps stadium club card
still more to come...

30 December 2008

cards from saint nick, i mean dan

well, they were from dan at saints of the cheap seats actually. they arrived a few days before christmas, and were a lot of fun to go through. i picked out a few to share.

1989 fleer sticker.i don't have too many stickers. puzzle pieces, holograms, and brittle sticks of gum are all plentiful here, but not stickers.

another oddball - 1999 ud choice adrian beltre floating head insert. the card comes with a baseball quiz - essentially, the question is against what american league team did adrian make his major league debut? the answer is inside his head, but rather than disassemble the card, i will use baseball reference. survey says...angels. they were just the anaheim angels back then.

2005 upper deck espn mike piazza. espy award winner.the strongest man in so-cal. or, italian-american superstar slugger. either way, piazza was a monster in la. he is one guy i wouldn't have minded seeing play a farewell season as a dodger. russell martin needed the rest.

another catcher - 2002 fleer ultra paul loduca.a couple of former dodgers here, with pedro astacio in the background. dodger stadium also featured. not a fan of loduca. the whole 'heart and soul' jim tracy/bill plaschke stuff made me like him even less. then came the mitchell report. boo.

finally, 1993 pinnacle 'the idols'. gregg jefferies and ron cey.

apparently, gregg jefferies was a fan of the penguin. and really, who wasn't?

thanks dan! i am stockpiling some tribe and oh my omars to send your way.
