card show stuff

it's been over a month since wallet card and i went to the semi-annual regional card show, and i still haven't shown off the other cards i bought and scanned.  like this 1951 bowman don newcombe card
it's nice that the 'bull pen' is labeled and that curious george's man in yellow is watching newk warm up from the stands.

i picked up a card for my 1965 topps set, and it features three hall of famers
say hey! the giants must have had a pretty good team in 1964 with all that power (plus juan marichal and gaylord perry on the mound).  well, they won 90 games but were 4th in the national league, 3 games back of the pennant winning cardinals.  the dodgers were two games under .500, but bounced back pretty well in '65.

i also grabbed a card for my 1957 topps set for a buck - don mossi
i won't mention the ears.

from the dime binder, a 1982 topps sticker of pedro guerrero
showing his co-mvp form in the 1981 world series

the rest of the stuff comes from the dime boxes, and they were brimming with junk wax. i took some new to me double plays, like this 1993 donruss spike owen
1993 leaf ricky gutierrez
1994 leaf jose lind
1995 leaf carlos baerga
and 2001 fleer tradition marlon anderson
a little something for pretty much every facet of my collection!

dime box double plays

nick from dime boxes was at it again, recently.  he sent me some cards which included a few double play turns that were new to my collection.  have a look.

2014 topps opening day kolton wong blue parallel
1991 leaf jody reed
you can see the black armband on reed's sleeve for tony conigliaro

1992 upper deck kurt stillwell
which wasn't really new to my collection (nice tatooine scene, by the way), but now i have a copy for the binder that i can use to show the dp turn on the back
looks like it might be a gold hologram version as well.

1993 topps stadium club mike gallego
nothing slides like a deer

1994 fleer  scott fletcher
1994 leaf joey cora
2004 topps traded tony womack
2004 upper deck miguel tejada
channeling 1973 topps

and 2006 fleer ultra jorge cantu
not a good slide from who i assume to be the marlins' alex gonzalez, but some great cards from a great trader and blogger.  thanks nick!

a few trades for boxing day

i hope everyone had a good christmas.  i'm planning to keep the holidays going right through the weekend, and that includes the 26th.  boxing day, as they call it north of the border.

it seems like a good day to acknowledge some cards i have received recently from some nice blogger folks.  this first card came from dhoff at coot veal and the vealtones
that would be a 2013 topps gypsy queen steve garvey relic.  dhoff and i were working on a trade when things kind of fell through.  he still sent this card, however, which was most unexpected and completely appreciated.  i'll be looking for something to send in return...

tj at the junior junkie sent me some cards that were part of a ken griffey jr bday giveaway.

1989 topps andres galarraga
1989 topps isn't as bad as i used to think it was.  whatever that's worth.

2005 upper deck past time pennants whiety ford
whitey says 'they went that-a-way'

2013 topps gypsy queen rod carew
i know i have mentioned before that rodney cline carew's batting stance was one that i mimicked on the wiffle ball diamond as a kid.  this looks more like a reggie jackson stance.  carew was usually stooped over with a bit of a lean.

thorzul at thorzul will rule sent me two 2013 topps update twins gold parallels as part of his annual 'trade me anything' festivities.  someday, i'll take advantage of the 'anything' scenario and send him something off the wall instead of just some cards from his want list.  this year, i claimed kyle gibson
and anthony swarzak
from his update purchase.

tom from the angels in order sent me a nice package of cards featuring memorial patches a while back.  i will show those cards in individual memorial patches, except for this one.  it was the lone dodger in the bunch, and since i have a few good examples for the memorials that this card displays, i'll show it here.  it's a 1994 leaf eric karros card
that's the tim crews '52' patch on his left sleeve.  the back of the card shows the patch again
along with a generic dodger stadium scene.

thanks for the trades, guys.  and enjoy the rest of the holidays everybody!

same play? yeah, i think so.

take a look at this 1994 score scott fletcher card with craig paquette sliding in
now take a look at this next card
oh wait, not that one - that's just a gold rush parallel of the first card.  try this one
that's fletcher's 1994 pinnacle card, and it's pretty clear to me that it features the same double play turn as the score card.  a little digging tells me that the play occurred on july 8, 1993 after paquette singled with one out in the bottom of the 6th inning.  mike bordick of all people hit into the 6-4-3 to erase paquette and end the inning.  the game had a couple of interesting things going - it was a thursday afternoon game, but wasn't a getaway game as the red sox stayed in town for the weekend. it was also the second career start (and first since his 1991 debut) for todd van poppel.

here are some more cards featuring one of my favorite plays in all of sport - the double play turn

1994 score greg gagne
forcing harold reynolds

1994 mike sharperson
forcing ellis burks (?) to duck

1994 score tony fernandez, gold rush parallel
and 1994 score chuck knoblauch (gold rush parallel)
also making the turn, even though you can't see the lead runner.

here's a 1993 donruss travis fryman card
featuring robin yount

and the back of a 1992 upper deck alvaro espinosa card
featuring the slide of an unknown player.  remember when the yankees had crappy shortstops?  and didn't play their best shortstop at third base?

moving on to some 1993 upper deck cards, here is manuel lee
and rey sanchez turning two twice - front
and back
while playing baseball somewhere on tatooine.

back in our galaxy, john valentin
walt weiss
and rich amaral
also turn two on their 1993 upper deck cards.

here's barry larkin's 1995 donruss card
and bret barberie's 1994 pinnacle card
i will finish this post of double play cards with some 1994 leaf.  here's rich amaral again
along with pat meares
and alan trammell
featuring kirby puckett.  it's definitely 'last but not least' with that trammell card.  it's one of my favorites.

still more double play cards to show as i am finally getting them all organized and displayed.  stay tuned.

24 December 2012

in which i commence the double play dumping

let's start off this next installment with mike bordick and his 1993 donruss spirit of the game card
on which he is seen
that's right!  i think this play is captured on another bordick card.  or, maybe dave winfield was forced out on the front end of a different double play in oakland in 1992.  it's possible.  we'll see that other card sometime this week.

here's a 1993 fleer flair (i don't just say flair for some reason) barry larkin
again with barry bonds, just like his 1994 fleer ultra card we saw earlier today.

1993 upper deck sp eric young
featuring a lurking kurt stillwell, owner of many double play cards himself.

here's another ryne sandberg dp card, this one is from 1994 leaf
and this one is from 1994 score
we saw the gold rush version in the previous post.

here's another 1994 score dp card - this one features mickey morandini
in dodger stadium with brett butler sliding in

now, it's felix fermin time!  here's his 1994 score select card
and here's his 1994 topps stadium club card
which looks a lot like jody reed's 1994 topps stadium club card
reed has another dp card in the set that shows him with the dodgers.  i showed that card in this post.

jeff treadway also has two cards in the 1994 topps stadium club set.  this one seems to show him making the turn
his other one shows him as a dodger applying a tag at second, sort of.  it's nice, but not a dp turn.

stay tuned, more double play cards to come!
