there is only one 'regular' card from a major card manufacturer on sheet 22 in the steve garvey binder. have a look:
those cards are:
1. 1986 topps stickers (foil)
2. 1986 topps tiffany
3. 1986 true value
4. 1987 boardwalk and baseball
5. 1987 bohemian hearth padres
6. 1987 burger king
7. 1987 classic
8. 1987 donruss
9. 1987 donruss opening day
lots of oddball goodness there. the bohemian hearth card is the star of the sheet, but even the two non-licensed cards have a certain amount of charm. the boardwalk and baseball card comes from a 'top run maker' box set produced by topps. i believe there are variations out there that lack the '/' in the 'b/b' part of the card. finally, the 1987 classic card features two old guys - garvey, who was 38 in 1987, and an unnamed atlanta braves coach wearing number 42.
here are the backs:
the back of the classic card features some trivia questions, which makes sense since there was some sort of game associated with these cards as i recall.
there are only a couple more pages of cards from the garv's playing career, and then we get to the superfluous but pretty cool stuff.

seriously, target must have stocked these repacks just for me
here are the cards from the second of three repacks that i bought at target last week while doing some other shopping. i glanced at the card aisle and saw the 2013 topps chrome asdrubal cabrera orange refractor from the first rpack looking at me, asking me to add it to my double play collection, and i bit. when i removed that repack from the hanger, this next one was on full display, also asking for a home. here's what it had in it

taking the trade train from p-town
tom from waiting 'til next year let me know that he had found some oddball dodger card, and asked if i would be interested. of course i would! so, the cards were sent my way, and my collection is all the better for it.
the package included some 'swell' cards, including actual swell cards, of which one was this 1990 swell baseball greats steve garvey card
i've got one in the garvey binders, but needed one for the dodger binders. excellent.
there were also quite a few 1975 (some say 1976) sspc cards, such as willie crawford
crawford was traded after the 1975 season to make way for reggie smith in the outfield so i can't really complain about the dodgers not keeping him around, but he had some solid years as their right fielder. crawford won a world series ring at the age of 18 in 1965, and helped the club return to the fall classic in 1974, too. he almost became a double dipper as part of the team of my youth, but didn't make the club out of spring training in 1977.there were a bunch of pacific legends, too, like this 1990 clem labine card
labine was a 2-time all-star and a key cog on the dodgers' 1955 world championship team, so i'm glad to see him get some cardboard appreciation.
here's a very cool 2009 tristar obak duke snider card
he's shown as a member of the fort worth cats, which puts this image from 1946. snider spent that season with the dodgers' double-a affiliate, playing alongside future dodger coach monty basgall.
tom was kind enough to include an insert card of the reigning cy young award winner and mvp, clayton kershaw - a 2014 donruss diamond kings card
here's a 2012 bowman chrome prospect card of o'koyea dickson
he was a 12th round pick in 2011, and spent 2014 at double-a chattanooga. will he make the jump to okc in 2015? let's wait and see.
here are a couple more cards from the package that may not otherwise have warranted a scan - 1994 donruss billy ashley
and 1987 donruss brian holton
this may well be the first time anyone has bothered to scan a 1987 donruss brian holton card. you're welcome.
thanks for the cards tom!

a mcmemorial mcpatch for ray a kroc
raymond albert kroc was, among other things in his lifetime, a milkshake mixer salesman when in 1954 he met the mcdonald's brothers and recognized the potential for expansion that their hamburger business offered. kroc eventually bought the brothers out of the business and took the restaurant worldwide. in 1974, he used some of the money he had made from his mcdonald's empire and bought the san diego padres. after he died of heart disease in january of 1984, the team added his initials to their left sleeves in tribute.
here's a 1985 topps steve garvey card that shows the memorial worn in 1984, the first year the padres appeared in the postseason
and it shows up on garvey's 1985 topps record breaker, too.
it's there on eric show's 1985 topps card, tooand carmelo anthony's 1985 donruss card offers a really good look at it
but i've got this 1984 star steve garvey card in the memorial binder as the 1984 example of the memorial
thanks to the fact that it's garvey and he's wearing a mcdonald's wristband.the padres wore the memorial again in 1985, perhaps inspired by the chicago bears who had begun wearing george halas' initial on their uniforms following his death in october of 1983 and continued to do so the following year. in fact, the 'gsh' on the bears jerseys has never been removed since it was first added over 30 years ago. anyway, here are some examples of the memorial from the 1985 season.
1986 leaf dave dravecky
and 1986 topps mario ramirez
the ramirez card is in the binder, too.
the pads wore the memorial in 1986 as well, and there are some 1987 cards that show it fairly well.
1987 fleer garvey
1987 topps tony gwynn
1987 topps carmelo martinez
1987 donruss garry templeton
1987 donruss randy asadoor
and 1987 donruss ed wojna
those last two cards feature a nice dodger stadium, so they are both in that binder, but i have the wojna card in the memorial binder, too.
although the padres did not wear the memorial beyond the 1986 season, it has shown up on a few cards since then, like this 1992 fleer ultra tony gwynn commemorative series card
and this 2013 topps archives gwynn card
and, when the padres wear their 1984 throwbacks, the memorial makes a return as well, as evidenced by yorvit toerralba's 2010 topps update card
kroc, who once apologized to fans over the stadium loudspeaker for the padres' poor play, was a benefactor to many charities, including those involved in the research and treatment of various diseases, including alcoholism. he also oversaw the development of the ronald mcdonald house charities and was a member of the inaugural class in the san diego padres hall of fame.

a black armband for roger maris
roger maris, one of the yankees' famed 'm&m' boys, died in houston on december 14, 1985 at the age of 51 due to cancer. the yankees added a black armband to their uniforms for the 1986 season in his memory. thanks to the sheer number of cards produced in 1987, there are lots of examples. this first one is a 1987 topps glossy send-in card of rickey henderson.
the armband is much more noticeable on that card than it is on rickey's 1987 donruss card
but it's still there. here's ron guidry's 1987 donruss card
and don mattingly's 1987 fleer card
both good examples. topps had some in the flagship, too, like bobby meacham's 1987 topps card
the problem with this particular memorial is that the yankees wore black armbands in 1985 for clubhouse man pete sheehy, so i can't really be sure if these photos are from 1985 or 1986. i'll assume they are from 1986, but i know for sure that these next two - 1987 topps doug drabek
and 1987 topps mike fischlin
feature photos from 1986 because neither player was with the yankees in 1985. still, i'd rather use a different card in the collection. this 1987 topps yankees leader card featuring rickey and mattingly was a front runner
as was this 1986 donruss highlights card of mattingly
in the end, i think it's a higher likelihood that the 1987 topps card features a photo from 1986. besides, it features the yankee pinstripes.maris famously hit 61 home runs in 1961, eclipsing babe ruth's record for most in a single season. he also led the league in runs scored and rbi that year, won his second straight mvp award, and helped the yankees win the world series, too. he finished his career with the cardinals, including two more trips to the world series in 1967 and 1968. in addition to the armband memorial following maris' death, the yankees had retired maris' number 9 during the 1984 season with maris in attendance.
maris was born in minnesota, but the family moved to fargo when he was young. the fargo community still embraces maris as a hero, with many events and other references to him throughout the city. i can say that i have been to the roger maris museum in the west acres shopping mall. they will be the first to point out that maris is still the single season american league home run champ, if not the 'legitimate' champ.

35 gone at 57
i couldn't believe what i was reading yesterday afternoon. bobby welch, the rookie pitcher from the team of my youth, had passed away at the age of 57. definitely a need for black mourning crepe here on the blog.
there is no doubt that welch closing out game 2 of the 1978 world series was a huge moment for all dodger fans, but for me it represented the point of no return in my fandom, which at that time was barely a year old. i had to wait until 1979 to get a card of welch, but once the packs hit the streets, i didn't wait long. i remember opening about a dozen packs purchased at the 7-11 for a quarter apiece, and somewhere around the 6th pack, there was this card
let's take a stroll through welch's dodger career.1980 topps
he suttons.
1981 fleer
my neighbor across the street was a yankee fan, and pulled this card from a pack. i reminded him of how welch struck reggie jackson out to end the aforementioned game 2 of the 1978 fall classic, and he quickly handed the card over to me.

welch was 115-86 with a 3.14 era as a dodger, and 96-60 with a 3.94 era as an athletic, but 27 wins in 1990 means most will remember him as a member of the a's. i'll remember him as the guy who made a young fan believe that the dodgers could beat the yankees, even if they didn't really get it done until 1981.
