My recent covers……

EUROPA – Year of Children’s Books

Hi ! Here are some nice covers received by me from Poland, Latvia & Algeria. I just want to inform my friends that they should send only specific FDCs & please do not send empty covers for exchange as due to recent hike in Registered Airmail postage which is now three times the normal Air-Mail Postage. So it is not possible to reciprocate for the blank empty covers which are sent by most of the collectors as these covers do not serve any philatelic purpose. It is really very disappointing that often some collectors send empty ordinary covers (with no philatelic value) in exchange of stamps and Max Cards. In fact such covers are of no use for an advanced philatelist as they bear only used stamps. These covers serve the purpose of general collectors only.  Exchanging of stamps and covers is a great pleasure but it should be substantial and worth for someone and it must have some philatelic value. So exchange on particular themes will be better for both partners. However I prefer exchange of mint stamps, postal stationery and other philatelic items on my specific themes. I assure of sending nice philatelic items in exchange. I have recently added two new themes to my interest and these are Mona Lisa & EUROPA themes. I would certainly like to exchange stamps and philatelic items on these themes besides my other themes mentioned in my profile. It is a pity that the place where I live FDCs are not available on the date when they are issued. I get them quite late from other place so I cannot provide my friends the real FDCs timely. However I can send them mint stamps and other special covers available with me. This is all in this Post…….Till Next Post……Have a Great Time !

Cover from Latvia – Thanks to Mr EN Limanski. A real FDC posted from Latvia. Thanks LImansky for making it philatelically important by making it a Registered FDC ! Though the theme depicted on FDC is not my subject but it is a good registered used FDC for Flag theme !

Cover from Algeria – Thanks to Mr Ouari Khemissi for the cover. This cover is not a real FDC but a simple computer printout. It has no philatelic value as it does not even bear a special cancellation except two used postage stamps affixed on it. This cover cannot be included in Polar regions collection. Only the  stamps used on the envelop can be included to some extent.

I like to share the present condition of availability of low value MS released by India Post.
I still have not got one Polar Region MS. whenever I approach the GPO, they say the quantity which came are already sold out. I think this is the case in many GPO in India. but then, these are available for sale in abundant quantity for higher prices in online auction houses and with local dealers. selling the Polar Region MS @15 to 20 (100% profit) each and Silent Valley @ Rs. 15 each (200% profit). In eBay, making easy money. these are available even in packets (100 nos and 200 nos), while a student philatelist or others who need 1 or 2 for their collection need to visit the GPOs repeatedly to get one.

My nearest philatelic bureau is 60 km away from my city. I get my stamps through PDA a/c, but then too I did not receive the Polar region MS so far.Are these stamps issued mainly for benefit of dealers? or are the dealers bribing the clerks at GPO counter to get bulk quantity?

It seems that in future, new MS should be bought only from dealers and through auction sites. I started hating to collect Indian Stamps. Also, these postal staff give out huge quantities to dealers without any question. When I asked for 10 MS of Silent Valley, they looked at me top to bottom and asked whether I'm a dealer. Can't there be anything done to restrict this?

New Stamps on ' Protection of the Polar regions & Glaciers '

Date of Issue - 27 March 2009

Hi ! Here are some recent stamps issued on the theme 'PROTECTION OF THE POLAR REGIONS AND GLACIERS'. All the issues on this theme are wonderful and amazing. I just love them all not because of huge glaciers depicted on them but beacuse of lovely cute Polar Bears and Penguins. I just want to see them again and again. Its a great message to all globally through these nice postage stamps and souvenir sheets to check climate change and global warming. I believe that all the issues being brought out by different nations of the World will have a certain impact and contribute to raising of awareness on the necessity of protection of the polar regions and glaciers. Here is the recent one issued by Croatia on 27 March 2009. Though it does not depict my favourite Polar bears but its beautiful. Some issues on this theme from other countries depict Polar Bears, Seals and Penguins which I am giving here. All the issues on this theme giving a very chilling effect and reminding me of the huge glacier of famous film 'Titanic'. Well, this is a cool post for today . Though it's very hot in most parts of India now as the temperature is rising day by day. But here in Kullu, we are still experiencing snow fall on the surrounding hills and its quite rainy here almost everyday . So its not giving us the experience of summer time. Its still cool here, and we are always in woollens & children still going to schools in their blazers ! This is how the cool weather over here. Beat the Heat of April month ! ...... &....Have a nice cooling effect with Today's Post..... Till Next Post.....Have a Nice Time !

When polar areas and their endangered condition due to climatic changes are mentioned, most people immediately think of a sad picture of a polar bear that is compelled to swim over large distances in search for an iceberg somewhere in the North Pole region. Although being excellent swimmers, polar bears are unable to survive in those regions without ice. Disappearance of the ice cap during summer months and the threat to ice bear habitats have become the symbol of endangered condition of the ice-covered regions caused by recent climatic changes.

My Most favorite Issues

The scientific community is unanimous in their confirmation of the existence of global warming, as well as of the responsibility of humans for recent changes, which has been confirmed also by the latest report of the United Nations’ committee on which several thousands of scientists worked. Of course, there are also natural exchanges of ice ages caused by the change of the Earth’s orbit or by the tipping of the Earth’s orbit, the so-called Milanković’s cycles. However, they do happen on time-scales of thousands of years and cannot be taken as an explanation for the recent accelerated increase of temperature. Although these changes are global, they do not affect equally all the regions. The most threatened ones are those in the polar circle.

In summertime, almost all ice melts in the North, whereas the coastal regions in the distant South experience one of the highest temperature increases on the Earth i.e. 2.5 °C in one hundred years, on the top of Antarctic Peninsula. For all the above mentioned reasons, the period 2007/2008 was proclaimed the International Polar Year, on the occasion of which the scientists carried out a number of projects and measurements, with the specific purpose of better understanding and protecting the polar areas and glaciers. In the last 125 years of modern science, it has been the third time that the world joined its forces in the research of the polar areas, the last time in the distant year 1957/1958 on the occasion of the World Geophysical Year.

The projects related to the Polar Year are due to be finished in March 2009 and therefore it is very convenient that the issue of a commemorative stamp on the protection of the polar areas coincides with the end of great effort in science to research and protect them better. An important issue has been left open: what we as individuals can do to protect the polar areas. Although we are very far away from them and our country is small, we can still make quite a difference.

The atmosphere is getting warmer and warmer under the influence of glasshouse gases and it is not irrelevant where they arise from. The Western world generates enormous quantities of these gases and a fair part of them is superfluous and their emission can be reduced. As a nation we can plan the sustainable development which will not be an additional threat to the Earth and as individuals we can save and more efficiently use the energy; we can plan better and reduce our "imprint" in the emission of glasshouse gases, in order to help everyone on the planet to keep their habitats.

It's going to be Earth Hour !

Hi ! 28 March 8.30 P.M. is going to be Eath Hour ! Earth Hour is an initiative of WWF , conceived to raise awareness of global warming and to show how the small actions of individuals can together make a big difference in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helping save the planet. I just received this nice cover from Lativia issued on "Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers" sent by Mr. E.N. Limonsky. I think it is the best cover for this evening and remind everyone for saving the earth from Climate Change and Global warming. Thanks a lot Mr. Limonsky for such a nice cover !

New stamps on “Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers”. theme...

To create awareness about Global Warming and Climate Change and to pay tribute to all the efforts made during the fourth “International Polar Year” 2007-2009 and to deliver a strong message aimed at the whole world, the postal administrations of around 40 countries have decided to joint to produce a common stamp issue concerning the problem of the Global Warming and featuring the slogan “Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers”. Here is the latest stamp on this subject issued by Ukraine on 18 March 2009. It is a se-tenant set of two stamps depicting "Antarctic station Academician Vernadskyi" and glacier. A beautiful Miniature sheet issued by New Zealand. This miniature sheet includes two $1.50 stamps that depict Franz Josef Glacier set against a backdrop of the Southern Alps. Some more stamps on this subject by Lativia and Faroe.

In 2009, at the initiative of Finland Post and Chile Post, more than 30 postal administrations issued stamp products on climate change, the common theme being "Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers". Each participating country issued its products in the period January – March 2009, with each country deciding independently on the design of its products. A shared feature of all is the ice crystal insignia.

The impacts of climate change directly on our environments and on our economies have created a greater focus on sustainability. Consequently, today we are seeing global thinking turned into local action. Sustainability is being adopted as a core value by individuals, communities and businesses.

Most of the Nordic Countries (Canada, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway …) who issued a common block of stamps in March 2007 for the IPY’s opening are involved in this issue, as well as the countries making claims in Antarctica (like Argentina, Australia, Chile, New Zealand …) or having stations on the White Continent (Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Czech Rep., Ecuador, India, Japan, South Africa, Uruguay).

Some other countries having temporary research programs in the Polar Regions are also joining the stamp issue (like Estonia, Hungary or Switzerland for example).

Date of Issue - 4 March 2009

This issue of two AAT stamps is part of a world wide initiative involving more than 30 national postal administrations highlighting the importance of the Earth’s poles and glaciers and how global warming may affect them.

The 55 cent stamp features a snow petrel – a bird that breeds on the Antarctic continent and inhabits pack-ice, icebergs and icefloes. The snow petrel has been chosen as an indicator of the health of the planet. If their food is either diminished, or disappears, because of global warming, their numbers will be jeopardised.

The $2.05 stamp features a jade iceberg highlighting the unique beauty and elemental nature of Antarctica. As part of this stamp issue, a special ice crystal logo has been designed by Saku Heinänen of Finland and will appear on the stamps of participating countries.
