Colossal Month for Criterion, har har

It's going to be hard for Criterion to deliver a more exciting month in 2010 following their March releases. Firstly, we have a Pedro Costa box-set, entitled Letters from Fontainhas: Three Films by Pedro Costa, which includes the features Ossos, In Vanda's Room [No Quarto da Vanda] and Colossal Youth [Juventude Em Marcha], set for the 30th. The fourth disc contains a feature-length doc, All Blossoms Again [Tout refleurit: Pedro Costa, cinéaste] by Aurélien Gerbault, as well as two shorts from Costa, Tarrafal and The Rabbit Hunters, both taken from the omnibus features O Estado do Mundo and Memories, respectively. Then we have Nicholas Ray's classic Bigger Than Life, on DVD and Blu-ray, on the 23rd. Then, Marco Ferreri's Dillinger Is Dead [Dillinger è morto], with Michel Piccoli and Anita Pallenberg, on DVD on the 16th.

And... perfectly timed to celebrate Akira Kurosawa's 100th birthday on the 23rd (and, coincidentally, my 26th), Sanjuro and Yojimbo will debut on Blu-ray, available either together in a cheaper set or separately. And, perhaps best of all (depending on who you ask), Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven will get the Blu-ray treatment on the same date. If June was Criterion's exemplary month in 2009, March is certainly it for 2010.

Millennium Mambo, Part 2-ish

Two more big lists have been published asserting the finest films of the decade. The haughtier of the two came from The Toronto International Film Festival Cinematheque, which surveyed a group of "film curators, historians, and festival programmers" and named, in a surprise move, Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Syndromes and a Century the best film of the 2000s. I'm in agreement with almost their entire list, aside from Claire Denis' Beau travail (not because I don't absolutely adore the film, but because by my own regulations, it counts as a 1999 film) [Abbas Kiarostami's The Wind Will Carry Us falls into the same place for me], Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth (which is fine, but doesn't need to be that high) and Elephant, which should not be listed above Gerry (or Paranoid Park, which isn't on the list). I also don't have much affinity for I Don't Want to Sleep Alone, I'm Not There., Alexandra or Saraband (from what I remember of it), but that's part of the joy in lists like these, no? So to tally... directors with more than one showing: Apichatpong Weerasethakul (3), Hou Hsiao-hsien (3), Jia Zhang-ke (3), Gus Van Sant (2), Todd Haynes (2), Tsai Ming-liang (2), Aleksandr Sokurov (2), Claire Denis (2), Guy Maddin (2), the Dardenne brothers (2), Pedro Costa (2). Only 5 of the 54 are unavailable on DVD in the US, though both Pedro Costa films are planned (or at least strongly rumored) to be coming from Criterion. However, in looking at the list, there is a wave of sadness, seeing studios that are no more like New Yorker Films, Wellspring/Fox Lorber, USA Films, Lot 47 Films and Picturehouse, as well as ones that have fallen from grace but still existing in a smaller form like Palm Pictures and (meh) Miramax and New Line. Of course, a number of fabulous distribution studios have opened throughout the past ten years, from Cinema Guild, IFC Films, Benten Films and Oscilloscope as well as Palisades Tartan's restarting of the Tartan library, which brought Silent Light to screens this year. The biggest showing though for the studios still thriving would have to be Strand Releasing, who released 5 of the films above, including the "newest" of the lot, Lucrecia Martel's brilliant The Headless Woman [La mujer sin cabeza]. I wonder if it's an oversight that no 2009 film made the list or if the TIFF crowd was being overzealous with getting that list out. Also, notice only 2 documentaries and 1 short made the list, something I'm sure a handful of other lists will make up for.

Anyway, onto List #2 for Time Out New York, which polled a number of Big Apple-ish film critics, including Andrew Grant, Karina Longworth, Aaron Hillis and Kevin B. Lee (their individual top 10s can be found via this link). The list rounded to 50, but I'll only post the top 30 here, so you can check out the write-ups and #31-50 on their site.

While Time Out's list is certainly more US-centric than TIFF's, I can't find much bad to say about a list that includes Brian De Palma's Femme Fatale in the top 20 (and even included one film I'd never heard of: The Mad Songs of Fernanda Hussein... another highlight of checking out lists as these, if only that particular DVD wasn't already out-of-print). I don't know how I feel about Inglourious Basterds as the highest ranked 2009 film (and, in fact, the only one). The remainder of the list contains some real surprising and/or underrated treasures like Ramin Bahrani's Man Push Cart, Michael Mann's Miami Vice and Lukas Moodysson's Lilya 4-ever [Lilja 4-ever], as well as some contemptible ones like The 40-Year-Old Virgin (and, yeah, Donnie Darko). The only film that absolutely does not belong on the big 30 is I Heart Huckabees, while a few dangle on that line (American Psycho, Brokeback Mountain), keeping my personal preference against a couple out of the mix. So here's to the close of the '00s! More list, I'm sure, are on hitting the "printer" right now. I can't wait to hear what Cahiers du cinéma rounds up.

The Big Region 2 Update for the UK, July '09-March '10

Instead of picking through which titles I listed last time around, I've simply narrowed this list of upcoming DVDs in the UK to the titles released after 1 July 09. Keep in mind that the release dates may change without notice (or be canceled), and the DVDs that begin with an asterisk are ones that have rolled over from the last update; the ones in bold are still unavailable in the US (or haven't set a firm release date). Some of the more exciting releases for the second half of 2009 include BFI's Blu-ray release of Visconti's The Leopard; Secondrun's release of Pedro Costa's The Blood; Artificial Eye's uncut (or so I've heard) releases of the two Jeanne la Pucelle films from Jacques Rivette; two Satyajit Ray films (Goddess, Two Daughters) from Mr. Bongo Films; Georges Franju's La tête contre les murs from Masters of Cinema; two early films from Sally Potter (London Story and The Gold Diggers with Julie Christie) from BFI; a Blu-ray of The Quay Brothers' Institute Benjamenta from BFI; and Palisades Tartan's first round of DVDs for the UK, including Tom Kalin's Swoon, Park Chan-wook's Thirst and a remastered edition of Ingmar Bergman's Fanny & Alexander. Please also note, just because a film doesn't have "also on Blu-ray" mentioned doesn't mean it won't happen; I just didn't find mention of one. The titles are in descending order of release.

Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, Semaine de la Critique, Cannes 2009

More films playing at the 62nd annual Festival International de Cannes were revealed today. The line-up of both the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, aka Directors' Fortnight, and La Semaine de la Critique, aka The International Critics' Week, have been announced. Contrary to early reports, Francis Ford Coppola's Tetro will make a showing at Cannes this year, opening the Quinzaine. Coppola's company American Zoetrope will roll the film out in US theatres in early June. Other notable films screening at the Quinzaine are the latest from Pedro Costa (Colossal Youth), a documentary entitled Ne change rien, translated as Don't Change Anything; a new film from Hong Sang-soo called Like You Know It All; Luc Moullet's La terre de la folie; Yuki & Nina, a co-directorial effort from Nobuhiro Suwa and French actor Hippolyte Girardot, who starred in Suwa's segment in Paris je t'aime; the latest film Le roi d'évasion from Alain Guiraudie, who will show up on my Decade List in the coming months; and a trio of American films that made their premieres at Sundance in January. I Love You Phillip Morris finds our new favorite trend of Hollywood actors going gay as Jim Carrey falls in love with cellmate Ewan McGregor. Amreeka, about an immigrant woman in Illinois starring Hiam Abbass (The Visitor, Lemon Tree, The Limits of Control) and Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development), also played at New Directors/New Films on 25 March; National Geographic Films will release it theatrically. And Lynn Shelton's acclaimed Humpday is the third; Magnolia is releasing it this summer. I'm not familiar with any of the directors screening at La Semaine de la Critique, but among the shorts is one directed by actor Grégoire Colin, the star of a number of Claire Denis' films, entitled Le Baie du renard, loosely The Bay of the Fox. The directorial debuts in the Quinzaine will compete for the Caméra d'Or, whose previous winners include Steve McQueen's Hunger, Miranda July's Me and You and Everyone We Know, Corneliu Porumboiu's 12:08 East of Bucharest, Tran Anh Hung's The Scent of Green Papaya, Jafar Panahi's The White Balloon, Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay! and Jim Jarmusch's Stranger Than Paradise.

As for reactions to the various line-ups this year, it seems strange to comment about a group of films no one's seen yet; however, it's hard not to get excited about all the new films from such established directors, particularly after such a disappointing showing at Berlin and Sundance earlier. Of course, some of these films will not meet their high expectations. Some of the unavoidable things I'm not looking forward to reading this year include the homophonous substitute of "Cannes" for "can," the American media coverage of Angelina Jolie at the premiere of Inglourious Basterds, talk about how the recession has effected the festival unless it's warranted by, say, Vanessa Paradis walking down the red carpet naked and complaints about the poor showing of American directors. Four more critics' circles announced their year-end awards today. Amy Ryan seems to be taking the place of once frontrunner for the best supporting actress category Cate Blanchett (though I may suspect that confusion would be made as to whether she was the lead or supporting). Frank Langella has also emerged as a dark horse candidate for Best Actor... and if you're wondering about Colossal Youth from Portugal which took two best "experimental" films, the film, as of yet, has no US distributor (I'll keep you posted with that one). And this year's Cannes line-up appears to be connecting with the US film awards much more than previous years with In Competition films like No Country for Old Men, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Colossal Youth, Persepolis, and 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days all faring quite well in the year-end rush of prizes. Keep in mind though that The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is ineligible for the Foreign-Language Oscar as France chose Persepolis as their official selection. I'm pretty sure a good portion of the film is in English as well, so France avoided the conflict that Israel is facing now with their selection of The Band's Visit. I really don't have anything to say other than that... but here they are anyway. UPDATED: 12/11 with San Francisco Film Critics Circle.
