Spoke to Soon; More from the Warner Archive

The day after I mentioned a number of new films coming to the Warner Archive, The New York Post revealed even more titles becoming available on 16 March (thanks, Eric). Funny enough, all of the titles I give a shit about seem to be the ones the writer doesn't as they're all listed near the end. The ones I didn't mention yesterday include Lina Wertmüller's Night Full of Rain [La fine del mondo nel nostro solito letto in una notte piena di pioggia] with Candice Bergen and Giancarlo Giannini; István Szabó's Meeting Venus with Glenn Close and Niels Arestrup; James Ivory's Surviving Picasso with Anthony Hopkins, Natascha McElhone and Julianne Moore; Art Napoleon's Too Much, Too Soon with Dorothy Malone and Errol Flynn; and Dino Risi's The Priest's Wife [La moglie del prete] with Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. Arizona Dream, Rabbit, Run, A Man and a Woman: 20 Years Later and Saint Joan will also be available on the 16th.

Tourneur, Lamarr, Penn & Teller and Kathy Bates in the Warner Archive

With just over 300 titles now included in the Warner Archive Collection, Warner has certainly kept its promise from earlier this year to keep bulking up their selection and, shockingly, have actually been listening to their customers by offering bundle packs and discounts on the DVD-R releases (I remember someone joking in regard to Little Darlings that $20 was pretty steep for a film starring Kristy McNichol).

A few titles you can look forward to being added, hopefully, by the end of the year: Sidney Lumet's adaptation of Anton Chekhov's The Sea Gull, with James Mason, Vanessa Redgrave, Simone Signoret and David Warner; Robert Z. Leonard's The Bribe with Robert Taylor, Ava Gardner, Charles Laughton and Vincent Price; King Vidor's Comrade X, with Clark Gable and Hedy Lamarr; and Kenneth Branagh's A Midwinter's Tale [a.k.a. In the Bleak Midwinter], with Joan Collins, Jennifer Saunders and Julia Sawalha.

Below you'll find a list of the titles recently added to the collection. All are available now at the Warner Archive homepage. Highlights include a pair of noirs from Jacques Tourneur, Roger Ebert's favorite 90s teen comedy Angus, a number of Hedy Lamarr flicks including I Take This Woman (which went through the hands of Josef von Sternberg and Frank Borzage before being completed by W.S. Van Dyke), King Vidor's silent The Patsy with Marion "Rosebud" Davies, Peter Glenville's Term of Trial and Paul Brickman's remake of Moshé Mizrahi's La vie continue, Men Don't Leave, Arthur Penn's Penn & Teller Get Killed and the little-seen, much-hated fantasy Lionheart.

Żuławski's L'amour braque from Mondo Vision, Almodóvar and Other DVD Updates

Mondo Vision has announced the third of their nine Andrzej Żuławski releases, L'amour braque, for 15 October. Like La femme publique and L'important c'est d'aimer before it, there will be two versions to choose from: a standard edition and a limited Premium Signature edition. The film marked Żuławski's first collaboration with his then-muse Sophie Marceau, who would star in all of the rest of his French productions before they separated in 2001 after La fidélité. Francis Huster and Tchéky Karyo also star.

I've been told that Sony will be releasing all, or most, of the films from their ¡Viva Pedro! box set, released at the beginning of 2007. Law of Desire and Matador will become available individually for the first time in the US, and the remastered versions of both All About My Mother and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown will be back in circulation. I would imagine the same for Bad Education, Talk to Her and The Flower of My Secret, but unlike the other two, they were just repackaged into the set. All will/might(?) be out 3 November, just in time for Broken Embraces.

Some date changes: Water Bearer has moved the release of OMG/HaHaHa to 12 October and announced Philippe Vallois' We Were One Man [Nous étions un seul homme] for the same day. TLA has pushed their release of Shank from October to 8 December. And finally, Cinema Guild moved Jerichow's release date to 27 October.

The only Blu-ray release I came across that was of any interest was Kathryn Bigelow's Near Dark from Lionsgate on 10 November. Expect that awful Twilight-looking cover art as well. The rest of the DVD announcements are below, in descending order of release.

- A Lady of Chance, 1928, d. Robert Z. Leonard, Warner Archive, 18 August, w. Norma Shearer
- Speedway, 1929, d. Harry Beaymont, Warner Archive, 18 August
- Shopping for Fangs, 1997, d. Quentin Lee, Justin Lin, Pathfinder, 6 October, w. John Cho
- West 32nd, 2007, d. Michael Kang, Pathfinder, 13 October, w. John Cho
- Carnal Uptopia [Sonhos e Desejos/O Balé da Utopia], 2006, d. Marcelo Santiago, Pathfinder, 20 October
- The Heartbreak Yakuza, 1987, d. Masato Harada, Cinema Epoch, 10 November
- Holes in My Shoes, 2006, d. David Wachs, Alive Mind, 10 November
- Hurt, 2009, d. Barbara Stepansky, Monterey, 10 November, w. Melora Walters, William Mapother
- The Merry Gentlemen, 2008, d. Michael Keaton, The Weinstein Company, 10 November, w. Michael Keaton, Kelly Macdonald
- Tora-San, Volume 1: Films 1-4, d. Yoji Yamada, Azuma Morisaki, Shun-ichi Kobayashi, AnimEigo, 10 November
- Rome, The Complete Series, 2005-2007, HBO, also on Blu-ray, 17 November
- Toi et moi, 2006, d. Julie Lopes-Curval, Koch Lorber, 24 November, w. Marion Cotillard, Julie Depardieu, Jonathan Zaccaï

She, The Fox, Reckless in the Warner Archive

Warner Bros. added a few notables to their Archive Collection for August. As of yesterday, you can now get your dirty hands on Robert Day's not-so-classic epic She, co-produced by Hammer Films and starring Ursula Andress in the title role of She, Who Must Be Obeyed; Hammer staples Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee are also in it. As of the 4th, you can also pick up James Foley's Reckless from 1984 with Aidan Quinn and Daryl Hannah as star-cross'd high school footballer player-and-cheerleader lovers.

On the 18th, they'll release Mark Rydell's adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's The Fox about a pair of lesbians on a chicken farm. A handful of silents will also become available that day, including William Nigh's Across to Singapore with Joan Crawford; William A. Wellman's The Boob also with Crawford (I love the idea of Joan Crawford in a film called The Boob; juvenile, I know); Nigh's Desert Nights; Roy William Neill's The Viking; and Edward Segwick's West Point, again with Joan Crawford.

And finally, a pair of comedies from Mervyn LeRoy are set for the 18th as well. A Majority of One, with Alec Guinness and Rosalind Russell, based on the play by Leonard Spigelgass, and Mary, Mary with Debbie Reynolds. You can find the Warner Archive Online via this link.

Walerian Borowczyk, Laura Gemser, Jude Law in drag, punk rock in concert, Orson Welles, Ally McBeal and a lotta Ida Lupino! (Not all together, sadly)

I should point out a few things about the releases below. Firstly, IFC announced another few titles for DVD release, all of them genre flicks (of what quality, I'm not sure, as I haven't seen any of them), and I wonder when they're going to get around to their theatrical releases, instead of their VOD titles. Secondly, I've only mentioned Anchor Bay's re-release of the film Where the Day Takes You because it gives me the opportunity to mention that it's easily one of the worst films I've ever seen. It's this dishonest, cheeseball Gen-X exposé of street kids in Los Angeles with a silly cast of once-famous-but-still-recognizable actors. Laughable doesn't begin to describe Hollywood's fallible attempt here, but my friend Chris and I wanted to program a So-Bad-They're-Still-Not-Good film festival and make a double-feature of Where the Day Takes You and John Singleton's dreadful Higher Learning. It would be one miserable night!

Also, Liberation Entertainment announced November release dates for Sally Potter's Rage, which got scathing reviews at Berlin in February, and Caroline Bottaro's Queen to Play [Joyeuse] with Sandrine Bonnaire and Kevin Kline. I don't recall either film receiving a theatrical run. So if seeing Jude Law in drag suits your fancy... And finally, you can put down your pencil from all the letter-writing you've been doing to try to get Fox to finally release the complete Ally McBeal series onto DVD, 'cos your wishes have been granted; on the 6th of October, you can relive all the zaniness, all the dancing babies, all the unisex bathroom interactions and all the Vonda Shepard you want! I heard there were a lot of music rights issues which held up the US release; just please tell me it wasn't Vonda's fault. The DVDs are in descending order of release.

Party Girls

Thanks Eric. Nicholas Ray's Party Girl, not to be confused with the Parker Posey vehicle from the mid-'90s (Hello, Chanel!), is now part of the Warner Archive series, which is a bit of great/disappointing news. Great as in it's finally available; disappointing as in 'doesn't Nicholas Ray deserve better than this?' Considering two of his most famous films, Johnny Guitar and Bigger Than Life, are still MIA on DVD in the US, I suppose something is better than nothing. Maybe.

On an unrelated subject, I ran across an article by Jonah Weiner on 30 Rock and its (?) conservative leanings (thanks, Lex). It's a fantastic read, but I think Weiner overlooks the fact that Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) and her (wo)manchild-ness and walking-on-thin-ice liberal-ness are treated in the same vain as Jack Donaghy and his artless corporate-ness are. I did, however, forget how funny it was when Carrie Fisher referred to her neighborhood as "Little Chechnya."

More Syberberg, No Kluge

Facets announced another epic Hans-Jürgen Syberberg German biopic for June; this time it's Karl May. The company previously released Our Hitler and has Ludwig: Requiem for a Virgin King set for 26 May. While doing some research on Facets releasing, I also stumbled upon the fact that all four of director Alexander Kluge's films that had been previously announced (Yesterday Girl, Part-Time Work of a Domestic Slave, The Indomitable Leni Peikert and Artists Under the Big Top: Perplexed) have been canceled (or at least delayed).

Also from Facets in June: Diary of a Suicide [Journal d'un suicidé], the feature debut of Stanislav Stanojevic, whose Notorious Nobodies and Subversions have already been released/announced from the company. The film stars Delphine Seyrig and Sami Frey. Strand will release Doris Dörrie's Cherry Blossoms [Kirschblüten - Hanami] on 16 June. For fans of Dörrie, her 1985 comedy Men... [Männer...], which was her international breakout, was slated for 14 April from MVD/Televista, but that may have been canceled (that studios releases are often unauthorized). And finally, Lionsgate will release Hugo Rodríguez's Nicotina, with Diego Luna, on 9 June. Nicotina's release from First Look a couple years ago was canceled before it hit shelves.

And finally, take a look at Filmbo's blog to read more about the Warner Archive Collection, the Warner HTF chat and the unexciting line-up for MYA Communications.
