2025 Planning of a Sort

 Hi!

So here we are in 2025 and I thought I'd post a bit of inspiration for myself.

First up, I'm going to have to face facts. There is no way I've got the time, space or indeed motivation for any big projects this year. I had hopes to finally make a decent attempt at Leviathan but until I have some more spare time and indeed space for gaming, I think I'm going to have to shelve that particular project for a while.

What I do think I can manage is something more modest. Namely some teeny warbands for Brutal Quest or Planet 28.

Both rulesets are wonderfully simple but fun and I've had a great deal of enjoyment from using them over the years, especially as I only need 2-3 figures a side and a small gaming space which really lends itself to narrative driven and character based projects which suits me more than a larger warband or army based project.

Now I immediately have a bit of a spanner in the works of getting gaming going in early January as our kitchen ceiling is finally getting fixed after a full twelve months of hassling the letting agent from upstairs whose previous tenant so kindly flooded our kitchen with their crappy washing machine on repeated occasions. I'm so relieved its finally getting done but it does mean that I'm expecting workmen wandering in and out for the best part of a week while the ceiling comes down and is replaced, plastered and painted.

While this gets done, the hobby time will be taking a back seat but I plan on using the time to continue fleshing out my Aeroth, Farpoint and Stump settings with a bit of a vague idea of creating a crib book for each which will be incorporated into my mini campaigns.

I have a lot of ideas I want to work on this year and I do have hopes that I'll be able to make a bit of a bash at getting them developed beyond nebulous planning and into something that will keep me entertained and motivated!

In the meantime, All the best!

A Trio of Adventurers

 Hi!

I've finally got round to getting my current adventurers illustrated, despite the campaign having been going for about three weeks now!

Fael is a northern barbarian who was exiled for her ability to summon elementals, something the tribal druids greatly disapproved of. She has since moved south where she has been inhabiting the Whispering Arch, a ruin that lies deep in the ancient forest that lies to the north and east of the Axeblade mountains.

Modwen the goat. Modwen is Fael's companion who followed her into exile and is usually the first into the fray, bowling over foes with his mighty horns.

Arud is the latest addition to the party and is a golem, an artificial being who Fael encountered outside the Dwarven settlement of Crucible. He's desperately trying to track down his master but his cortex has been badly damaged so he has very little in the way of memory.

I'm really enjoying playing out the campaign as the trio move further into the wild regions of Aeroth and it's been great fun to see how they develop using Brutal Quest as the basis for their encounters as well as my trusty story cubes to move things forward.

Fael is proving to be an outstanding ranger type of character who has repeatedly spotted potentially hazardous situations as well as a surprisingly decent summoner. Modwen is turning into a bit of a beast in close combat but has been seriously wounded in an encounter with an Elven Golem and the trio is currently hiding out in a cave to avoid a search party that an as yet unknown antagonist has sent out from the Iron Spire to hunt them down.

Arud is proving to be a bit of a fire magnet having been reduced to his last few points of damage in pretty much every encounter he has but he still keeps on going (he's been set on fire twice, pincered by giant insects and mauled by a mutant bear as well as speared by a crazed Goblin!)

Hopefully I'll get chance to get some figures sculpted for the three in the not too distant future as I suspect they're going to be making regular appearances in my games going forward but it may be a while as I've potentially got a house move coming up in the next few months as I'm moving from Dundee to Perth Waterstones to take on a new role which is exciting but also mildly terrifying when it comes to the prospect of packing up all our tat and finding a new home for the first time in six years.

We shall see how things go and hopefully a move will be relatively straight forward and I'll be able to get back to proper gaming soon but in the short term I suspect most of my hobby related content will be pen and paper only as everything is going to be packed up and put into storage until we can sell our place and find somewhere new.

In the meantime, I will keep posting as regularly as I can and All the best!

Brutal Quest as an RPG Wargame

 Hi!

Following on from my earlier post with all the papertech Goblins, I got to thinking about playing a bit of a mini quest using paper standees and using Brutal Quest as the basis for the rules.

After having a bit of a rummage, I got my copy of the rules, a small notebook, pens and whatnot but also got my assorted Rory's Story Cubes out and set about fiddling around with the rules themselves.

Nic handily has produced a bit of a mini supplement called Pump Those Numbers Up! which covers converting his rules from a D10 system to a D100 which I already use on Planet 28 and I also intend to use Hack and Slash! Experimental combat rules for Planet 28 to add some extra crunch to my games.

With the rules sorted, I decided to create a character and rolled up his stats randomly using the Brutal Quest character creation rules but instead of paying points, I rolled a D44 (or 2 D4's!) to see what I got. Once I'd completed this stage I gave myself 20 points to up different stats to round out the character a bit.

This will create a low level character who may be quite good at a couple of different things but not super powerful.

I then looked at the stats for the as yet unnamed character I'd rolled up and turned to my copy of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay for a bit of inspiration. Looking at the characters stats, I realised he was more suited to a warrior than say a ranger or scholar or thief so I rolled a D4 and ended up with a Dwarf and then the D100 and got Tunnel Fighter.

Looking at the profession in the rules, it says that he is equipped with a grappling hook and rope so I decided to give my newly created character the Climb trait for Brutal Quest (the Tunnel Fighter in Warhammer Roleplay has lots of other skills too but I figured they were already figured into his stats).

As you can see, the character isn't very agile, is pretty good in melee and can shoot but isn't overly aware of his surroundings and has the intelligence of a rock...

It was now time for me to crack out the Story Cubes to see if I could come up with a background for my Dwarven Tunnel Fighter, who I named Grune.

By selecting a random trio of Story Cubes and rolling them to see what I got, I ended up with a Frog, a DNA Helix and a Lonely Tower. After a bit of head scratching I settled on Grune being an inhabitant of an isolated hold who had been mutated and now had warty skin.

Grune Warthide (Formerly Grune the Handsome)

Already I seem to have got a bit of personality for Grune so I rolled another trio of dice and got a House, a Book and the Lonely Tower again. This made me think that maybe Grune has left his home to seek a cure for his affliction and he sets off towards a nearby city to begin his search.

Another trio of dice resulted in a Rainstorm, a Skull and Crossbones and a Bodybuilder. Totally random stuff but here we have Grune seeking shelter from a rainstorm on the way from his hold to the city when he is beset by bandits and as I already have the Goblin paper standees, he ends up facing a bunch of lowly Gobbos. But the bodybuilder dice made me think that maybe there's also a bigger tougher foe along with them so I ended up having Grune facing not only a pair of Goblin footpads but also a Goblin leader!

My next step will be to play out the game of Brutal Quest to see how things go so watch this space as we follow the sorrowful tale of Grune!

I had considered setting the session in the Warhammer Old World but think I'll be going for my own setting of Aeroth as it's a good way to flesh out the setting and will allow me to play around with all manner of bits and bobs without getting bogged down in trawling for details on the Old World to keep things accurate.

I now have the paper standee for Grune sorted and am going to put together a couple more Goblins and we shall see how the encounter goes but in the meantime, All the best!

Rangers of Shadowdeep Project Part 2

 Hi!

As part of my Rangers of Shadowdeep project I needed some zombies for the first scenario and have just finished the first trio!

I made them rather scabby, scarred and gribbly and really enjoyed working on the little guys and gave them a mixture of worn military and civilian attire to represent the unfortunates who have been afflicted with the gift of unlife by the Children of the Worm!

I also rummaged out another of my Boar Company troopers who had been sat primed and got him painted too!

Armed with a two handed flail, this little guy means business and adds some heavy hitting power to my Boar Company force. I actually have four of them all together so will be able to field a unit of them in larger games.

Adventurers disturb a group of shambling Children of the Worm

I've got three more zombies to paint and will post another update in the next few days once they are done along with the intrepid rangers who will be exploring the Shadowdeep, or the wild frontier of Aeroth!

I've also got another post that I'm putting together with some musings about playing some other games that I've got lying around and one or two I'm contemplating picking up and having a bash at in the future but more on that next time as it doesn't really fit in with my Rangers project.

In the meantime, All the best!

Designing Fantasy Land Ironclads Part 1

 Hi!

I've spent a bit of time looking at my scribbled notes and ideas about the design processes and possibilities for a fantasy Land Ironclads setting and thought I'd use this post to work out some of my ideas!

My initial aim is to get my Dwarf and Orc landfleets built and into action so I'll be looking at them initially and post a bit about what aesthetics and type of play they will be aimed towards.

The Dwarves specialise in engineering and have no magic or magitech, relying on the tried and true steam engine to power most of their vehicles, with a few exceptions so they will stylistically be lumbering and slow moving classic tank designs with a majority of their firepower aimed forwards to suit their defensive nature. The smaller vehicles in the landfleet are the Ironclads, well armoured and armed but slow. Similarly the heavier Anvil class is basically a beefed up version of the Ironclad with heavier armour and guns and are intended to plod forward and blast anything that gets within range of them.

But I also have the Warhammer and Battle Forge classes, proper cruiser level Land Ironclads who will be able to dish out serious amounts of firepower while trundling around. While the Warhammer has a single medium turret and two medium gun barbettes, they also have a pair of light gatling turrets to deal with any marauding infantry trying to sneak up on the flank. The Battle Forge is a bit of an oddball with a heavy gun turret but also a very powerful broadside which doesn't fit too well with the modern Dwarven approach to battle.

Ironclad Formation

I still need to make more cruiser level Land Ironclads for the Dwarves and plan on making a couple of big Battleship levels as well but am currently pondering on how to make these look. One of the best things about working in such a small scale is that I can make machines pretty quickly and easily and with the nature of an industrialised people who are fiercely clannish, they will have a fairly wide variety of styles and makes of warengines depending on which Hold they come from.

The Dwarves also make use of walkers so I'm going to make a bunch of War Golems to give the Dwarven forces some more mobile contraptions and am contemplating making some larger Living Ancestor class Golems for a bit of fun!

There's also the Airfleet to think of as I already have a Dig bomber and some Gyrocopters to buzz around and annoy opponents and suspect that I'll be beefing this branch of the military up as well...

Finally I want to add some specialist Land Ironclads to my collection in the form of a carrier and possibly some heavy artillery too to give me a really large selection of stuff to choose from for the upcoming campaign.

The Orcish Horde is a very different beast.

Titanosaur Gun Wartowers

The Orcs are a culture that thrives on war but are largely nomadic and use vast lizard like creatures to act as their weapons of war so I've got several small and medium level Warbeasts done already but feel that the Orcs will also be getting some experimental and very unreliable Land Ironclads too as they attempt to modernise their forces.

Gamewise, the Warbeasts will be quicker and probably more manoeuvrable than the clanking Dwarven machines and better suited to rushing forward and getting into close combat with their opponents, relying on the combat prowess of the Warbeasts to crush enemy formations. This will probably mean that I've got a lot of sculpting ahead of me as the beasts will probably be quite cheap gamewise as they're a bit fragile so need numbers to make up the deficiency in lastability.

Orc Formation

I've currently got Necrosaur and Titanosaur gun wartowers which will form the bulk of my forces but will give the force more options by including rocket wartowers and twin titanosaur heavy gun batteries to give them some long range punch. Coupled with lots of infantry and cavalry, the Horde should fight quite differently from the Dwarven defenders.

Land Ironclad wise, the Orcs will be getting some Orkish style scraptech. Bodged together from all manner of sources, the Orcish Land Ironclads will be formed of a fairly readily available small class and rarer but heavy cruiser classes to act as mobile command and bragging bases for the Khans to lord it over their followers and as already mentioned, they will be pretty experimental with some interesting weapon options ranging from spar torpedos to the Eye of Gorath!

Necrosaur Gun Wartowers

The Orc airfleet will consist largely of Darkwings and Wyverns, small to medium sized winged lizards which will be available in considerable numbers as they will rely on swarm attacks to wreak havoc on their opponents.

Fluff wise, the Orcs in Aeroth are actually Gorathian's, a race imported from another planet by the Elves long ago to act as soldiers in their army but The Death caused by the thrice cursed Elves use of the World Killer Engine to defeat a mysterious foe has left them trapped on Aeroth and desperate to get back to their own world, or failing that to conquer this new one. They are a largely nomadic culture but do have several permanent settlements which are more like military camps than anything else. They have subjugated the Goblins and use them as manual labourers who farm, raise flocks of smaller creatures and generally act as cannon fodder in Orc attacks.

Thus far I've spend more time thinking about the Orcs and Dwarves than I have the Elves and Human Barbarians who make up the other two major factions in the game but here's some ponderings on them too!

The Elves are masters of Magitechnology so have access to all manner of arcane weapons of war. Their frontier forces make plentiful use of Earthbound Dragons. Twisted and mutated descendants of the true dragons are fast moving and capable of carrying Powerlances mounted on their scaly backs. Next up there is the Landfleet, beautiful but deadly grav vehicles who use Liftstones to float effortlessly over the landscape and powered by Earthpower, an arcane energy that the Elves contain within great crystals and allow the vehicles to move, fire weaponry and in some of the larger and specialised classes shield them from incoming fire.

The Elven forces will probably find themselves outnumbered by pretty much any opponent but their long range and deadly firepower will balance the scales somewhat and their rapid moving and oft times shielded vehicles will tip the odds in their favour more often than not.

The Elves also have access to the largest and most powerful of airfleets with dragonrider wings and great flying barques that can rain down destruction upon any foe with near impunity so there's plenty of interesting stuff to play around with!

As for the Barbarians, they specialise in Elemental magic so can summon great elementals to crush their foes so there will be a number of different sizes and types of elemental to make ranging from stone elementals armed with massive boulder throwing and combat potential to fire elementals capable of searing opponents to wind elementals who specialise in bringing destruction on airfleets.

They also make use of warbeasts like the Orcs so will have chariots and wartowers armed with small shard guns, elementally charged weapons that fire iron bolts at great speed and capable of transporting infantry.

I've also got loads of other stuff to work on, be they the Sea Demons, Daughters of Leviathan, the Horned Folk, Children of the Moon, Followers of the Worm, The Knights of the Eternal Light, the City States, the Order of the Tower, Grey Elves, The Stygian, The Fallen, Mercenaries and more!

Hopefully I'll get chance to flesh out each of these forces but I want to get the Orcs and Dwarves finished first as well as delving into the setting I've been creating as well so apologies for all the rambling but I've found it rather fun to start getting the project moving on so do expect more Land Ironclads updates soon!

All the best!

Horned Folk Army Project Part 2

Hi!

I've managed to finish off a second Wartower for my Horned Folk army!

 Horned Folk Wartowers

I've still got one more to finish to get the formation up to strength but I am already thinking about adding some more firepower to my force as the Aeroth setting I am developing is going to be a bit more science-fantasy so my decidedly low tech Horned Folk are in need of some more arcane tech to beef them up a bit!

Warband on the move.

It's rather nice to have finished a paintjob that I started 18 months ago and the force does seem to be slowly coming together! As with the other Wartower, the basis for the wooly rhino is a Irregular Miniatures 15mm scale rhinoceros with a howdah, crew and armour sculpted on. I also extended the horns and built up the bulk of the beast as well.

I'm going to get some more infantry added for my next update and hopefully a somewhat bigger beast too but in the meantime, All the best!

Horned Folk Army Project Part 1

Hi!

Well I've survived my first week back at work and have been pondering on finishing off a project I started some time ago in the form of my Horned Folk army...

Looking back, it's been about 18 months since I touched the project and I have some fun ideas that I want to try out on my 6mm fantasy gubbins so I figured it was high time to have a bash at building up my forces a bit!

 Horned Folk Warband thus far

The backstory of the Horned Folk is that they were one of the first races to inhabit Aeroth but were all but destroyed by the Elves during the Age of Legends and the survivors retreated into their great barrows to sleep away the ages before being re-awoken by The Death.

Now having spent quite a while scribbling notes about the setting of Aeroth, I do want to move the tech level forward a bit so it's not quite so dark ages and more science fantasy so most forces will feature magical or mechanical constructs to do battle and the Horned Folk are currently looking a bit under equipped.
 Horned Folk Warrior regiment

Inkeeping with their Minotaur styling, I am going to post up a background article on them to flesh them out a bit and make them fit in with the setting a bit more but at present, I want to concentrate on rounding out the force a little and looking at what I have, I will finally try and finish off my two remaining small wartowers as well as another four stands of Beastkin which will give me a good basis for a force.

 Beastkin Regiment

The next step will be to flesh out the force a bit with some arcane tech, larger wartowers and some more high status infantry. I am going to try and sculpt much of the warbeasts myself as I have a pretty specific look that I am trying to achieve but one of the joys of 6mm scale gaming is that you can field truly massive monsters and I look forward to creating some really big beasts to march to war alongside hordes of infantry and cavalry!

 Small Wartower

Games will still be played on a small board, no larger than 3'x3' or possibly 3'x4' and rules wise, I am actually pondering reworking Epic 40k as it's such a slick little system that I think will work well with the sort of game I want to play. I doubt I will be fielding massed formations but it will provide enough space for a decent amount of maneuver before the armies clash!

 Cyclops

Another good thing about the project is that it can be completed on a modest budget as post wedding, the hobby budget is pretty puny. It will also be rather refreshing to actually finish a project for a change as I only need to paint about six bases to complete everything I have!

Fallen Renegade

I will be rummaging around my 6mm stuff to provide enough figures to bump my Beastkin regiment up to 8 bases as well as painting up the last two wartowers but will also be trying to sculpt something a bit bigger which will act as a nice centrepiece to the force so watch this space!

All the best!

A Quick Update!

Hi!

Well I have finally got a day off work but will be spending much of it doing work related shenanigans but have just been rummaging through some of my old pics and found these chaps:

 Lesser Goblin Wartower

Orc Warriors

 Scenic Gubbins

Interestingly they are all from my old Leviathan project which stalled out many moons ago but looking at some of the stuff I developed for it, I do wonder if it might be possible to resurrect the enthusiasm I had back then for 28mm scale stuff as those Orcs look cracking and the tree gives me a hint of just how interesting my fantasy project might have become.

I don't want to jump the gun but watch this space...

A Return to Aeroth?

Hi!

Well another busy day at work is over but I have loads of stuff still to do organising a Harry Potter evening instore for 200 people so I suspect that my hobby time is going to be next to non-existent for the next couple of weeks but I do find myself looking back over some of my Aeroth stuff of the last few years.

Now I have tried time and again to get some warbands put together for the classic wargame, Leviathan but for various reasons I just don't seem to be able to get anywhere. Part of the problem is that the original game was in 28mm scale and required some really vast warbeasts and engines of destruction to play such as this fellow below:

Orc Titanosaur

The game looked amazing if a bit impractical as you needed a vast amount of space to play it properly, not to mention a large selection of equally vast monsters. I've tried it out in 15mm with some success and am slowly working on a selection of 6mm bits and bobs to represent some of the epic battles that take place on the blasted plains of Aeroth but I can't help but wonder what I can do to resurrect the fun I had with the game.

Horned Folk Warband

Now I doubt that I can summon up the time or space to create a mass battle in 28mm scale but I have been wondering about a 28mm skirmish or a 15mm scale mid sized battle sort of  a deal. With that in mind, I am going to do a bit of experimenting to see if I can't put together some bits and bobs.

I don't know how much time I have spare to work on the project but I am rather keen to have a bash and see what I can put together. Hopefully I will have something to post this weekend though!

All the best!

Army Building the Slow Way

Hi!

Well I am back from a couple of the busiest days I've had in ages! In case you have been living under a rock, most of you will know that Harper Lee's controversial sequel to To Kill A Mockingbird, Go Set A Watchman was released yesterday and it's been utterly mental in a good way for those of us in the book trade. But enough shop talk and onto the miniatures!

As I mentioned in a previous post, I am slowly (albeit almost glacially) painting my way through a bunch of Dwarves, mostly from Mantic Games plastic range. It's not exactly a fun experience as some of the detail is a bit soft but I must admit that the style is kind of growing on me.

Dwarves

The plan is to base them in units of twelve ala AZAZEL'S BITZ BOX (an excellent blog that is well worth a peruse!) so I can use them for Warhammer, Kings of War or any number of skirmish type games. Handily the front rank, including dead Dwarf is now finished and I can get on with bulking out the unit a tad as I have enough of the little chaps to make two units of twelve warriors and a unit of eight Thunderers which is enough to get me started.

 Dead Dwarf

I have no doubt it would be much quicker to batch paint them in groups of five or six but I couldn't bare the soul crushing tedium of the process. I am more than happy to spend a bit of time over each of them and slowly paint up one or two a week and eventually discover a full force!

The hero miniature is from the Grendel Leviathan range and is fantastic fun, if a bit too big for most Dwarf ranges. I have a few more on the paint table waiting to be primed and several more having been converted to having more impressive beards.

Hopefully, the next update will have a more complete regiment and the bases will be getting a bit of static grass and snow effect finish to make them a bit more interesting. I plan on making a force from the Crown of the World, a bleak and cold region to the far north of Aeroth that bounds the Arctic Tundra and will be commanded by a unit of Frost Giants.

For now though, I am off to finish some sculpting!

All the best!

Age of Sigmar Stormcast Eternal

Hi!

Well it took me a bit of time but I finally finished painting up the Stormcast Eternal that came with White Dwarf the other week and I must admit he's turned out quite nicely!

 Stormcast Eternal

You may notice that he's mounted on a 30mm base as I felt the 40mm was just a bit too big, despite his impressive stature. I went for a simple gold and silver armour with royal purple and white details to brighten him up a bit.

 More Views

I can't seem to get over how much the figure reminds me of the Chronopia Firstborn so went with it and included the classic pattern to his shield. Game wise, I plan on using him as a Knight of the Eternal Light, a faction of templars that were briefly mentioned in Leviathan. I must admit I wouldn't mind picking up a few more of the fellows to create a bit of a skirmish force but we shall see how the range develops first!

Here's a few scale shots showing him next to some other common races:

 Bigger than a Savage Orc!

 Towers over a Dwarf

Much the same height as an Elven Noble of Helios

I have to say that he is quite an impressive miniature being highly detailed but rather straight forward to paint, if a bit time consuming to get him right and he makes a good edition to the post apocalyptic fantasy world of Aeroth, even if folks might not like him for Warhammer!

All the best!

Painted Stuff!

Hi!

Well it's another toasty evening here, but I have managed to get a few bits and bobs done over the course of the last week and shock, horror, I've actually finished painting some stuff!

Now I know that plastic figures aren't too popular, but I happened to have a few Mantic Dwarves kicking about from a previous project that went nowhere, so I thought I would have a bash at painting up one of them to ease back into painting.

Satisfied with the finish, I moved onto an old Crucible Dwarf Thunderchief and imagine my surprise when I actually enjoyed painting up the little chap:

Warrior and Thunderchief

Now I seriously suspect that if I want to build and paint an army, as I have mooted, I am going to have to paint it a little bit at a time and intersperse lots of other, different miniatures so that I don't start getting bored. Heeding such sage advice, I rummaged out a plastic GW Savage Orc that was from another unremembered project and slapped on some paint for him too:

 Orc

Folks may notice he's not green. I went for the reddish brown of an orc native to Aeroth and added a bit of warpaint to liven him up a bit. I also added a top lip to the fellow as I don't really like the lipless grimace of the new GW style Orc.

Another View

I am now toying with the idea of starting small and building up to larger bands as I go, one of Mountain Dwarves under the command of some of the rather fancy Reaper Bones Giants and a savage Orc warband but no doubt I will find other bits and bobs to paint of a similarly eclectic nature which will result in me pretty much painting whatever I fancy.

If it means I am enjoying myself I don't really care if it takes forever to paint a force!

Until next time, All the best!
