Latest Daubings

Hi!

Well it's been a busy few weeks with work once again taking up nearly all my free time and the joys of Real Life using much of what I had left!

Still I have managed to paint a few bits and bobs!

First up, there's a test piece for my 2nd edition 40k warband that I've been swithering about:

 Snakebite Ork

He's had quite a bit of conversion work done to him but the addition of a top lip, hair squig and tongue gives him a decently 2nd edition vibe to him.

I'm still somewhat unsure about adding more to the mix but I am warming to the project somewhat!

Next up, here's a couple of Bloodbound thuggish types for Age of Sigmar:

Angry men with axes

I've worked on them over the course of a couple of days and will be adding one or two more over the course of the week. I quite like them once painted and the 32mm bases are actually quite handy too. I've also been playing around with a darker basing technique with them and plan on adding some static grass tufts once I get the chance too.

Next up, there's a Grenadier Berzerker:

 Angry MacSmashface

I really like this guy as he's just so furious and has tons of character. I gave him quite a few scratches and cuts to represent him having actually been in a bit of a scrap.

I spent ages working on his skin tones to try out a more realistic style of painting and quite like how he's looking too. I may add a few chums to make a barbarian warband as I rather enjoyed painting him!

Next up, there's the Bat from Batman:

Attack VTOL

I really enjoyed painting a rather worn and battered vehicle and I will be adding it to my Lao force for Battletech and speaking of Battletech, I went back to the first of the Mechs I painted for said force and added a few more bits and bobs to give him more character:

Lao Raider

I seem to slowly be getting my painting mojo back again for the first time in absolutely ages and I hope to be able to add lots more gubbins in the coming month so watch this space!

In the meantime, Pirate Captain Easter Chick demands you have a fantastic Easter!

(thanks to my wife for painting chicks on me!)

Stuff From the Leadpile 3

Hi!

Heres the latest figures I've painted from my leadpile, some Four A Miniatures:

 Barbarians

Flesh Golem

I've really enjoyed painting them as they have very different types of sculpting, the barbarians have lots of fine detail that results in an interesting model to paint while the flesh golem is lovely and chunky which made for a joy to paint!

In other news I have rummaged out my painted figure collection dating back several years. Sadly its been rather poorly handled and they have all fallen out of their protective pockets and I found them piled up, chipped and broken at the bottom of the box. After some wailing and gnashing of teeth, I have set about repairing the damage and finally varnishing them so they won't suffer the same fate in future!

Heres the first couple from the collection:

Grenadier Barbarian (now available from Em4 Miniatures)

The Barbarian was painted up a few years back for a Nuclear Renaissance project that never materialised but he works quite well across genres as he will see action in both Sci-fi and Fantasy gaming!

Old Citadel Hobgoblin

Next up theres an old Hobgoblin from Citadel. He's a lovely little figure but I need to rebase him with a lipped base so he fits in with the rest of my collection. I do like the style of him and will be keeping my eye out for any more so I can round out a warband of them at some point!

I've also got a pile more, mostly Chronopia figures sitting on the paint table for touching up and rebasing so will post pictures of them once I get chance!

Looking at my collection I have found that I have a pretty decent force of Sons of Kronos for Chronopia so hope to be able to round out the force at some point as at present I have a unit of Hearthguard and some Viridian Lords but want to get some normal tribesmen and cavalry choices. Fortunately I have some more Grenadier barbarians kicking around and combined with my previously painted Four A and Grenadier barbarians I have just about all I need!

Hopefully I will get chance to add some more pictures today of some Crystal Lotus Elves and possibly more!

All the best!

Northern Barbarians!

Hi!

As promised heres some pictures of my first barbarian unit:

All the figures are PETER PIGS Conquerors and Kings ancient Germans and paint up really nicely. I particularly like the movement in the sculpts which really makes the unit look like a horde of bellowing savages charging into battle! at £2.60 for 8 infantry they are a great deal even if they are quite small

I based some up on 15mm square bases and others on 30mm square multi bases to make moving them a bit easier but also allow me to reform them into different formations without too much hassle.

In keeping with the setting they are going to be fighting in, either the northern reaches of Aeroth or the rolling plains of Crucible I went overboard with static grass, Silfor tufts and even some longer bits of bristle.

I think for the second unit I am going to add some more interesting little terrain elements to the bases, be it a fallen tree or some sort of standing stone.

Its the first time I've actually had a bash at painting an entire unit for a while and I must admit its been quite a bit of fun. Hopefully I will be able to add a second unit soon!

Barbarians!

Hi!

I spotted these chaps over on the Lead Adventure Forum:

Barbarian Warper by Braxandur

Razorback Chariot by Braxandur

It just shows how nice the models are with a decent paintjob!

In other news I am off on holiday until Wednesday so doubt I will have too much chance to get many updates till then!

Shadowsea

Hi!

I recently purchased a PDF of Shadowsea from ANTIMATTER GAMES, a rather interesting game that uses the Song of Blades ruleset but puts it into a subterranean world. Having perused it for a bit I must admit its well worth the money!

Theres some interesting forces ranging from treasure seekers, to templars, lost civilisations and my personal favourites, the Dark Mariners!

I am thinking of using the rules and setting as is to give me some interesting games based on the shores of the Sea of Storms with groups of Knights of the Eternal light investigating the subterranean depths of the Garganuk Deeps, the vast series of tunnels that spread under the destroyed city of Harakium in an attempt to destroy shrines to Leviathan and dispose of groups of Sea Demons. The rules will also let me bring in the Serpent Men of Koth, Deviant Cults, Mercenaries and a lost barbarian tribe!

With concept sketches like this its easy to evoke a flooded realm full of deadly creatures:

Shadowsea Concept Sketch

I shall have to see what I can come up with!

By Crom!

Hi!

Its looking like its a good time for 15mm fantasy as Mark over at COPPLESTONE CASTINGS has announced that he is planning on releasing some 15mm goodness in the form of some Barbarians:

Copplestone Barbarians!

There doesn't seem to be any plan to release a range as such but they are really nice looking miniatures and would make perfect barbarians for Leviathan, especially as they look decidedly Conan the Barbarian like!

Somewhere on the Border Battle Report!

Hi!

Well I managed to get a quick game in this morning featuring my Dwarves versus a marauding band of Barbarians!

The Scenario

After several weeks of tracking, the Boar Companies scouts have located the warband responsible for the deaths of a camp of Dwarven hunters. The Boar Company must kill or capture as many of the barbarians as possible, especially the barbarian Chieftain, Lurmattii. The barbarians wish to drive the Dwarves from their hunting grounds so must break the Dwarven force and drive it from the battlefield.

The Battlefield

A clearing in the forest sparsely covered with large boulders and the occasional pine tree.

Deployment

The barbarians deployed in a group in the centre of their deployment zone while the Dwarves split into three groups, Grimli took one of the Boar Company and Grunter to the left flank, flint held the centre with two more Boar Company and the hunters deployed on the right.

Turn 1

The barbarians seize initiative. But the berzerker rolls 1 success and 2 failures so moves slowly forward and play passes to the Dwarves.

Grimli moves more cautiously forward supported by the Boar Company trooper in an attempt to block the gap between the rock formations. Grunter ambles along behind.

Flint attempts a bold move to flank the barbarian group and trap them in the narrow pass between two rock formations but rolls 3 failures and play passes to the Barbarians.

Lurmattii bellows a warcry and the whole barbarian force hurls itself forward and with his two remaining rolls, using his reckless skill the bold chieftain charges forward to lead the warband. The berserker on the right outpaces his leader, frothing at the mouth as he hurls himself toward his mortal enemies.

The following tribesman rolls two failures, possibly less keen to join the fray and play passes to the Dwarves.

The most Easterly hunter moves slowly forward seeing the great wolf is moving in his direction, the other hunter then rolls two failures and play passes back to the Barbarians

The Great Wolf attempts to close with the Dwarven hunters and rolls three dice but only gets a single success. Play passes to the Dwarves.

Seeing the danger Flint moves towards the wolf in an attempt to cut it off before it reaches the hunters. One of the troopers hurtles past him but the other rolls two failures and play passes to the Barbarians.

Turn 2

The berserker following the great wolf rolls 3 dice but fails with two closing with the wolf but passing play to the Dwarves.

Grimli hurls himself towards the barbarian leader, keen to bring vengeance for the kin he has slaughtered, his supporting trooper moves even faster scoring three successes and closes with the barbarian berzerker. Alas Grunter promptly rolls two failures and play passes to the Barbarians.

With a roar, lurmitti charges grimli, forcing the dwarf back with the sheer force of the attack. The berserker accompanying him charges the trooper but the dwarf blocks the frenzied blows with his shield.

Combat Ensues!

The barbarian skirmisher passes through the narrow gap in the rock formations and closes to try and get a shot off at one of the dwarves.

The berserker on the other flank manages to roll two failures and one success closing with the great wolf but again passing play to the dwarves.
Seeing the danger his leader is in flint veers towards the main combat taking one of the other dwarves with him, the second continues his move towards the wolf.

The two dwarf hunters move to optimum range so they can draw a bead on the approaching wolf.

Play passes back to the last barbarian to activate but he only manages to shuffle forward a little, obviously caused by too much mead the previous night.

Turn 3

Roaring his outrage, grimli hurls himself forward into the fray once more sweeping his blade in a blurred arc, the dwarf forces the startled barbarian to jump backwards to avoid being cut in two.

On the other flank, one of the hunters attempts to fire at the great wold but rolls two failures, passing play to the barbarians.

The Great Wolf howls and with an incredible burst of speed closes with the unfortunate hunter and literally tears him limb from limb with a gruesome kill (he doubled the dwarves roll and the savage ability resulted in a gruesome kill!) Seeing his companion die so horribly, the remaining hunter takes to his heels and flees the battlefield. The Boar Company trooper is made of sterner stuff and holds his ground. Seeing the wolf kill its prey, the following berserker whoops and closes on the remaining Dwarf on the east flank but rolls two fails and passes play to the Dwarves.

The Dwarven Hunter Comes to a Sticky End.

Summoning his courage, the Dwarf charges the great wolf, passing his morale check but the fury of the wolf drives him back again.

On the other flank the Boar Company trooper knocks the berserker to the ground with a powerful strike and Grunter bounds forward to aid his masters.

Flint closes with the action rolling three dice and getting two successes, but the last Boar Company trooper rolls only a single success from three dice and play passes to the barbarians.

The berserker struggles to his feet and continues the combat with the Dwarven trooper and the remaining barbarians close with the Dwarves blocking their way to freedom.

Turn 4

The Great Wolf attempts to kill the last Dwarf in his way but despite rolling three dice, only succeeds to roll a single success, passing play to the Dwarves.

Grimli finally manages to slay the barbarian chieftain with a blow that sends the unfortunate chieftains head flying from his shoulders. Seeing the loss of their leader, the remaining barbarians hastily pull back, apart from the wolf who is locked in battle with the Dwarf trooper on the eastern flank.

Pressing the advantage, the trooper accompanying Grimli closes with the berserker once again but rolls two failures and passes play to the barbarians. The berserker rolls 3 dice and gets two fails. To make matters worse he is promptly knocked over by the Dwarf.

Combat Heats Up Amongst the Rock Formations

Most of the remaining boar company close with their leader, but one seeing the battle between the Dwarf and wolf breaks off and scurries towards his kin after rolling three successes.

The remaining berserker moves towards this insolent dwarf but again rolls two fails passing play to the Dwarves.

Turn 5

With darkness approaching, the Dwarves are keen to finish off the barbarians but the trooper standing over the downed barbarian rolls three dice but fails two and his blow is thrown back and play passes to the barbarians. The berserker staggers to his feet but manages to pass play to the Dwarves with some bide dice rolls.

The Great Wolf forces the plucky Dwarf back but fails to kill him. Meanwhile the skirmisher attempts to be bold but only rolls one success from three dice and passes play to the Dwarves once again.

Flint attacks the berserker but is thrown back. Tiring of the stubborn barbarian, Grimli dispatches him with a blow that strikes him dead at his feet.

The remaining berserker finally manages to close with the Dwarven troopers in the East but poor dice, which have plagued the berserkers the entire game strikes again ending the turn.

Turn 6

Grimli attempts to finish the barbarians off but rolls 2 failures from 3 dice, closing with the skirmisher but passing play to the barbarians.

The remaining tribesman moves into combat with Grimli to support the skirmisher. Despite two successes and a supporting model, the skirmisher is no match for the commander of the Boar Company and is driven back.

An Epic Combat Nears its End.

The Great wolf again drives the Dwarf back but is unable to kill him, while the barbarian finally gets into close combat with someone! Unfortunately rolling two more failures and passing play to the Dwarves again.

The Dwarf he charged manages to hold off the frothing madman but cannot wound him. Meanwhile the remaining Dwarf once again, somewhat foolishly charges the wolf and is knocked prone by the beast.

Turn 7

The great wolf crushes the prone dwarf with its mighty jaws and causing the other trooper to break from combat and flee but play passes to the Dwarves once more.

Grimli is tiring and rolls three failures passing play back to the barbarians. The unfortunate barbarian makes the mistake of being overconfident and is run through by the dwarf commander for his troubles.

This brings the barbarians to breaking point and the remaining humans and the Great Wolf turn and flee the battlefield.

Conclusion

Grimli stared out into the darkness, his eyes squinting against the snow that had begun to fall. Despite killing Lurmattii and driving off the last of the barbarians, the victory felt hollow. He had lost two men and the damned hunter had run off into the forest during the battle. Now his force was badly mauled in a forest miles from the nearest Dwarven outpost and without the hunter to guide them, it would be foolhardy to attempt to move out before daybreak.

Turning to Flint, his second in command he ordered his troops to build a crude shelter amongst the great rock formation nearby. It promised to be a cold night and he didn't like the fact that the huge grey wolf which had killed two of his own was still out there somewhere. As if in mocking answer, a cry sounded in the distance and was answered to the East by another. 'Damn' he thought, 'Just what we need! The Children of the Moon are abroad tonight...'

Post Battle Ponderings

Well that was quite a fun game. The barbarians had truly terrible dice rolls though which pretty much handed the initiative the the Dwarves. The Great Wolf was totally amazing though and was more than worth the points cost. Saying that, the barbarians needed larger numbers to offset the Dwarves combat advantage so I may fiddle with the force a bit in future games.

The Dwarves were solid, if unexceptional in the game, apart from Grimli who was a one Dwarf wrecking machine and accounted for no less than three kills. I think he was also a tad lucky wading in like that as he could have been overwhelmed by sheer numbers, especially the combination of the Berserker and Chieftain. Fortunately the berserkers proved to be more dangerous to their own side. I think in future games I may up their quality a little as they should be fearsome savages not bumbling buffoons!

I suspect my next game will feature the somewhat battered Boar Company making a fighting withdrawal from the barbarian lands, while trying to hold off a pack of wolves who are dogging their trail...

Children of the Moon Allies

Hi!

Well I've finally had chance to finish off my Children of the Moon allied tribe!

The Tribe

The Infanty

Druid and Great Wolf

The miniatures themselves are from PETER PIGS ancient German range and are quite small but really nice figures while the Great Wolf is an old plastic Games Workshop wolf which I had kicking around for some time.

The Tribe ambushing some Dwarves who foolishly strayed into their hunting grounds.

Covered in tattoos and warpaint the clan is suitably barbaric looking, complemented by the fact they are accompanied by a couple of sky clad berzerkers.

The warband itself is badly in need of more ranged options as at present the only ranged firepower they have is a single javelin man and the druid himself. I suspect I will be placing another order with Peter Pig soon for some more bits and bobs which will allow me to expand their options a little.

I plan on adding some wolf riders and some Moon Warped (great big werewolves!) as well but at least I now have another force to play with.

I will be painting up some Fallen barbarians next as I have quite a few of the Peter Pig figures left over. They will need quite a bit of converting though as the tribe of Morda are a different people from the other northern tribes and openly serve the Fallen.

New Barbarian Warbeast!

Hi!

Heres the rules for the Pictish Warbison. I had originally planned on using them as a more mercenary group of Barbarians but with the addition of the Fallen clan at Morda, it seems suitable that these could be members of that cursed group.

Pictish Warbison

I have rough stats for a whole load of other units, warbeasts and warengines and will add them at some point soonish!

Assorted Gubbins!

Hi!

Just a quick update to show the results of my recent 28mm scale painting attempt:

Technomancer Thunderchief

I have some hopes that I will finally finish off the Technomancer Guilders as the results of this test piece are quite promising. I do think that I need to redo the skin tones as they are a tad on the pink side but otherwise its not looking too bad.

I've also got a couple of lesser earth elementals completed for my human barbarians:

Lesser Earth Elementals

Elementals Alongside Dwarven Battle Rager

Constructed from some pieces of gravel and a bit of sand they have turned out rather nicely and I may have to make several more of them!

More Boar Company!

Hi!

Well my plans to attempt to get a force sculpted in a day fell flat on its face after a succession of workmen and university work unexpectedly appeared. I am planning on re-attempting the task at some point this weekend though.

In the meantime heres a picture of the newest additions to the Boar Company!

Battle Rager and Hunter

The battle rager is a veteran warrior who has dedicated his life to the martial arts. Armed with a broad axe and sword he will be bringing some additional muscle to my front line. The hunter with his crossbow, will bring some much needed ranged firepower to the force.

The Boar Company itself is now nearly compete apart from the four heavy infantry I have been working on and a spellcaster (Inspired by Magical Trevor) who will round out the force nicely!

I have also received the order from Peter Pig and have based a barbarian warband which will be getting painted up soon so I will have some proper opposition to my Dwarves. I will also post a review of the miniatures themselves at some point this evening!

All the best!

Barbarians!

Hi!

I have just placed a small order with PETER PIG for some ancient Germans to act as barbarians. I Having seen the quality of them painted (some years ago I had a bash at painting an ancient German warband using them) I must admit that I am looking forward to getting my hands on them!

Alas I haven't managed to find a company who makes classic Conan style barbarians in 15mm scale so am going for some proxies instead. Saying that the Peter Pig stuff is rather nice and with a little conversion, I am sure I will have a decent sized warband in no time at all!

They will give me some allies and enemies for my Boar Company to battle against and theres enough to field two clans worth, one who worships the Earth Mother and the other who have fallen to evil ways. Another possibility is to have some Children of the Moon added into the mix...

I am still on the lookout for some monsters to support them, but already have an earth elemental put aside and will be perusing the packs to find a suitable druid.

Once they arrive I will post a bit of a review!

All the best!
