Rumble in the Jungle

Hi!

Well it looks like my decision to return to 15mm sci-fi has borne fruit!

I've spent a few mornings before work repairing some damaged paintwork on my assorted miniatures and giving them a good varnish to stop it happening again and have even managed to play a quick skirmish!

The Governor General has been performing an inspection tour of an Imperial construction project on the edge of the slime forest when a Badmoon warband decided to raid the camp for supplies.

 Imperials and Orks deploy

The game was played over a 2'x2' board with about a dozen or so figures a side in under half an hour using a bit of a bodged version of Song of Blades and Heroes and the Imperials firepower saw off the Orks before they managed to breach the fence line.

I must admit that I really enjoyed the experience and have an idea to re-run it with some more Orks as they needed more numbers, not to mention some bullet shield Gobbo's to soak up incoming fire.

The rules worked surprisingly well, especially when I changed some of the dice mechanics and gave the rules a bit of a reworking to suit my needs and I quite liked the fact that a small skirmish could be played so quickly and satisfyingly in such a short time.

I am feeling the need to expand my forces a bit too as already mentioned to build my Badmoons up to 20-30 models so they act more like the horde they should be and want to add another clan to the mix as I seem to be going through a bit of a yellow and black phase painting wise!

As I have limited space and hobby time, this small scale battle is just the thing I need and I am very aware of the fact that I can put together a warband in a weekend for the cost of about a fiver which is great!

I'm planning on further tweaking of the rules to make them better suited to what I want to play but have made a decent start to things and look forward to more gaming sessions over the coming weeks.

Imperial defenders stand their ground

I am also in need of more scenery which I always enjoy building so expect to see some more gubbins soon!

In the meantime, All the best!

Micro Fantasy

Hi!

As I've been sorting through my unpainted gubbins over the last few days, I found my Horned Folk warband that I started a couple of years back and have been humming and haahing about what to do with it.
A Horde of Horned Folk

I like the round bases but it doesn't really suit itself to massed fantasy games but I did begin wondering if I could use it for skirmishes using Song of Blades or warband level battles using Dragon Rampant.

Small Wartower

I've got an eclectic mix of Heavy infantry and warbeasts at the moment so need to diversify it a bit as well as working on my Grey Elf host to oppose it but as I have all the miniatures, I figure it would fit in well with my aim to start clearing through my lead (and plastic) pile.

Minotaur Legion

I must admit that I am rather relishing getting on with some small scale stuff after the big guy I am working on at present is finished and I think I could churn out a second Beastkin regiment of four stands in next to no time and with just one Wartower to finish painting, I think that my weekend is set!

Raiders from the Ancient Labyrinths of Aeroth

I figure I can play out a decent game of the likes I've mentioned on the small board I have and just need to put together some more suitable scenics such as ancient forest groves and an entryway into their Barrow City...

Wartower Rampage!

Something else I've been ruminating on is to add a larger wartower or two featuring some arcane ancient tech to give the Horned Folk a nice centrepiece to their army but we shall have to see if I have anything suitable in my bits box that can be converted to use!

A Horned Folk column on the march

I'm also keen to get back to work on the Grey Elves I had started but I must be honest that cleaning and converting Irregular Miniatures is a bit of a chore as I have to remove their small and bendy halberds and replace them with wire spears while the chariots need converting too and lets not even mention the cavalry...

Grey Elves

I have discovered that I still have a 6mm Orc, bits and pieces of a Lizardman and Goblin armies from Irregular but I'm really not liking their strip of figures approach. It's fine for Warmaster type of games but not really ideal for my approach but I may be able to put together some useful bits and pieces from them from time to time without getting completely disheartened with the effort.

In other news, the big guy I've spent most of the last week painting is getting there with only one weapon and his legs to detail. Sadly I don't have a base big enough for him but I don't see that being too much of a problem at the moment and I'll post some pics this weekend of him once he's finally completed!

In the meantime, All the best!

From the Lead Pile: Dwarf Spearman

Hi!

As I have a small stack of unpainted lead and plastic kicking around, I thought I would start painting up some bits and bobs and adding them on a semi regular basis on my blog and to get the ball rolling heres an old Heartbreaker Dwarf spearman!

 Dwarf Spearman

I've actually had him sitting in the lead pile for ages before deciding it was high time to get the little fellow painted up! I experimented with washes on top of his usual skin tone and I must admit I am rather pleased with how he turned out. Sadly I think I might need to add some more highlights to his beard as its a little flat looking at present!

I'm actually starting to get a fair number of the stunties done now and almost have a small unit ready:

Who are you calling Stunty?!

Despite my plan to go 15mm for Oldhammer, it looks like I may yet still stumble through in good old 28mm after all is said and done! In the meantime they make a rather decent skirmish force for the likes of Song of Blades.

I still need to paint up a couple more that I have undercoated including some crossbow wielding types and another two handed hammerer but its been a really nice change from Sci-fi!

All the best!

6mm Scale Mercenary Company

Hi!

Heres some pics of the force I have been painting up. The vehicles are all Brigade Models SAC while the bikes are old Citadel Imperial Guard and the battle armour is from Mechwarrior!

The Complete Force So Far

APC Variants: Support, AA and Anti Tank

 Battle Armour and Heavy APC

Battletanks and Assault Gun

Biker Squads

 Light APCs

As you can see the force is a bit of a hodge podge of assorted vehicles and precious little infantry but as they were just what I had lying around in my bits box they dont look too bad together. The assault gun and most of the APC variants are converted as I was either missing barrels or turrets for the original models.

I think the next step would be for me to get some supporting infantry and possibly some sort of VTOL to give me some fast attack options and the ability to capture or hold objectives.

I have also found a couple of squads of old Epic Chaos Squats so painted them up and they may form the basis for some evil raider types for my other force to battle!

Chaos Squats

I think I am going to have to place an order for some more bases, greenstuff and paintbrushes though as I've now run out of bases and my brushes are getting a bit ratty...

Next up I am aiming to get some Mechs done and in keeping with my frugal gaming pledge I have been rummaging my bits box with the intention of painting at least one figure from it each week until its empty and have even got an old Space Ork mostly finished too!

UPDATE!

I just played a quick game using Song of Blades as a basis.

The Company Mercenary unit consisted of two bikers, one elite biker, one squad of Castilian battle armour, a command APC and a battletank.

Facing them was a lance of Davion battlemechs consisting of a Cyclops, a Dervish, an Assassin and a Clint.

The mechs took the initiative and pushed forwards towards the mercenary deployment zone where the Assassin traded fire with the merc battletank until a shot from the mechs main gun hammered home causing damage.

Sadly this was the high point for the Davion mechs as the bikers hurtled out amongst them causing a nuisance while the command APC swung its missile pod to face the Assassin mech. The resulting explosion knocked the mech off its feet and before it could recover was swarmed under by the Castilian battle armour squad.

Meanwhile the mechs had abominable luck and only managed to force back or pin down the mercs before the command APC duelled the Davion Cyclops and knocked it over with a well placed rocket to the mechs leg. Before the pilot could recover the APCs autocannon blasted a neat hole in the mechs cockpit. At this the surviving mechs pulled back to regroup.

Sadly I didn't take any photos as the mechs are unpainted but worry not as I will post a full report of the refight with photos as soon as I have them painted!

All the best!
