Judging by my low number of blog entries, it would seem that I’ve been rather idle this summer. Hobby time has definitely been in short supply this summer, but I have been working on stuff. Mostly I’ve been building models for a few small projects for the upcoming analogue hobbies painting challenge. What I intend to paint for the challenge and what I actually end up painting are often different, but I figure I at least need to have a few options.
For the last couple of weeks, I’ve finally been able to sit down and paint which has finally allowed me to finish all the remaining infantry models for the Executioners chapter. This encompasses 3 tactical squads, 1 sternguard, 1 assault squad, 1 terminator squad and a command squad. I also completed a Chaplain, apothecary and (presented in this post) a librarian. The only thing I’m missing is a techmarine, but I’ve never really liked them. A lone marine running around repairing tracks and tightening bolts during a battle seems a bit silly. It would make more sense for them to be riding around in some sort of armored recovery vehicle. Hmmm…now I want one of those!

Summer has been extremely busy and along with changes at work, has seriously impacted my painting time. Despite this, I have been working on my Executioner space marine chapter and have the remainder of the infantry approaching completion. First across the finish line is the assault squad that I have pictured below as well as my jump pack Chaplain. The Chaplain is the old metal model that I picked up on eBay last year.
I’m hoping that during the fall, I have more time available so I can actually finish the Executioners. I have a Sternguard unit, a tactical squad and a librarian remaining which will complete the infantry component of the force. After that, I have numerous vehicles to plough through which I’m hoping to get done by the end of the year. We’ll see how that goes.
Since the end of the challenge I’ve really gotten behind on posting on the blog. That doesn’t mean my painting has been idle. In fact, I’be been painting quite a bit. Much of it were odds and ends left over from various other projects. The most prominent one has been a return to the Executioners Space Marine chapter. I painted a test squad before the painting challenge, but hadn’t been able to work on them again until recently. I’ve painted up the command squad, terminator squad and a second tactical squad.

The chapter decals all came from Fallout Hobbies. They have a big range of space marine chapter decals for all the various Badab War factions. The quality of the decals is quite high and shipping is pretty fast (and expensive to Canada). He also has flash sales on a fairly regular basis with 15% off.
In between each squad I would also paint a vehicle for Gaslands. I’ve added three so far using this strategy!
The first one drops oil slick and glue. The second one drops mines and caltrops and the third is a ramming specialist.
Hopefully I can stay motivated to keep posting in a more timely manner.

Recently, Conscript Greg trekked back to Winnipeg from Hogtown to run a Star Wars game using Bolt Action. It was an alternate history version of Rogue One, where Director Krennic's AT-AT was downed by a Rebel cell, who moved in to try and capture the Imperial bureaucrat to inflict some enhanced interrogation.
Greg used mostly Bolt Action v2 rules, with v3 firing resolution, overseen by Dallas. Greg provided the infantry figures, which included some 3D prints.
###
Some Rebel Heroes, led by K2-S0, advanced along the dry river bed.
They climbed all over Krennic and his surviving bodyguards. Baz was the first Hero to fall.
Lights out! Now to get this guy off the table. Chirrut went down immediately after this photo was taken.
The Conscripts gather around the table as the action heats up.
Reinforcements, including multiple Sandtrooper squads and Speeder Bikes, swarmed in from both long table edges. Jynn Erso finally went down before she could rendezvous with Cassian Andor.
The Rebels were whittled away by the overwhelming Imperial firepower.
Fittingly, K2 hooked up with Cassian, who then managed to drag Krennic off the table. They were the sole Rebel survivors!

Bolt Action provided a fun, fast game. We look forward to seeing Greg on his next visit to town!
Thanks to Greg for putting on such a fun game, and to Dallas for graciously hosting!
The chapter decals are from Fallout Hobbies and I’m really happy with them. Fallout Hobbies has some bad online reviews dating from the pandemic. Like most industries , they were hit hard and customer service suffered. I can honestly say that whatever issues they did have were fully resolved. Orders are shipped within a week of purchase and shipped via DHL to Canada. This is a bit pricy, so make sure you order everything you need in one go! The decals are as good as anything GW can do and the pigments are strong enough that the underlying colour doesn't bleed through.
The squad painted up fairly quickly, so I hope to have a bunch of these guys done by the end of the year.

Having completed 'Under Construction' and 'Black and White', I decided to hit the Sci Fi studio next for 'Destination Moon'. I found two highly appropriate miniatures in my retro collection that were wearing spacesuits that looked a lot like the ones worn in the movie. I have no idea who the manufacturer is, so if anyone out there recognizes them, let me know. Like a lot of my minis, I glued these to 25mm fender washers, and added some sand as groundwork. They were then painted using Vallejo acrylics, with the exception of the Partha True Blue. Once again the special challenges are getting me to paint figures that have been sitting in the pending box for a long time.

The next figure is a vintage West End
Games Rebel Commando figure that I have painted up in the colours of my
planetary militia using Vallejo Gunship Green and a wash of Biel-Tan Green.
The last stop is the High Adventure studio where we are going to film an adaptation of H. Rider Haggard's novel 'King Solomon's Mines'. Our figure is the Big Game Hunter with Shotgun from Grenadier Models 'Call of Cthulu' range. This miniature dates from 1983. It was glued to a fender washer, sand was applied to the base, and it was primed black with an airbrush. The main colours used are Vallejo Flat Flesh, Khaki Grey, and Leather Brown. Iraqi Sand was used for the pugaree, Beige Brown for the gunstock, and Gun Metal for the shotgun barrels. Citadel Reikland Fleshshade was used on the skin areas, and Agrax Earthshade for the rest of the model.

As I wrote at the beginning of this post, the Special Challenges within the AHPC provided some incentive to paint up a few more of the oddball minis that have been sitting in my storage boxes for a while. I am not sure if I will ever have a need to place these on the tabletop, but they were fun to paint. Thanks for reading.
