1960s French Rolex Submariner Ads

1960s French Rolex Submariner Ads

Emmanuel from France is a fan of Jake's Rolex World and he recently sent in some really cool French Rolex ads from 1964 though 1966, which he found in a French magazine from the 1960s named, "Plongées", which was a scuba-diving magazine. The image below of the diver wearing a Rolex Submariner appeared in a French Magazine named "Géo", which was similar to National Geographic. Thank you so much for sharing these really cool ads with us Emmanuel!!!

Jerome Powell Federal Reserve Chairman

A Federal Case

Jerome Powell

Federal Reserve Chairman

Rolex Submariner
Reference 16610

Jerome Powell has been in the news a lot lately as the Federal Reserve has recently hiked up interest rates again to try to fight inflation, so I thought it would be a good time to take a look at Powell.

Some people believe the President of the United States is the most powerful man in the world, and some would say the Chairman of Federal Reserve is actually more powerful. Certainly, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve is one of the most powerful people in the world of finance as they control fiscal policy for the United State Economy, which is the largest in the world. In the video below from September 21, 2022 we witness Jerome Powell announce a 0.75 precent rate rise, where he talks about his goal to curb inflation and bring it back down to 2% annually.

Below is a video from September 23, 2022 that features Chairman Powell on the subject of "Transitioning to the Post-pandemic Economy" with the full board of governors for the first time in 9 years.

Jerome Powell—also known by his nickname of Jay Powell—is the current Chairman of the Fed and as we see in the photo above he wears a vintage Rolex Submariner.

It is interesting to see the Chairman of the Federal Reserve wearing a Rolex Submariner for a few different reasons that come to mind. First, I've said many times before that Rolex is like its own country and Rolex watches themselves are a currency in and of themselves. So it's interesting to see Chairman Powell wearing Rolex currency on his wrist. Secondly, The Submariner is such a timeless, classic, masculine watch.

Jerome Powell has a somewhat unusual background for being the Chairman of the Fed as he does not have a degree in economics, but is a lawyer by training.

I included four detailed videos that feature Jerome Powell below, and if you watch them you will not only see him rockin' his Submariner but more importantly get a great idea of his intellectual prowess...

Warren Buffett

On Jerome Powell

"I think Jay Powell is terrific Chairman of the Fed...I've listened to what he's had to say. I love the fact Jay Powell is Chairman of the Fed...He will do what in his judgment is best for the American economy over time. There isn't any question about that...He knows what his job is and he will do it."

—Warren Buffet

Warren Buffett is an international treasure. The way he speaks reminds me of Yoda. He is like Yoda talking economics...The CNBC video below is SUPER PROFOUND!!! At around 16 minutes into the interview, Warren offers his opinion on Jerome Powell, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve.

Of course, Warren Buffett is no stranger to the crown as he has been wearing his yellow gold Rolex Day-Date for decades...

1957 Rolex Submariner Ad Proof...

The Evolution Of The Revolution
1957 Rolex Submariner Ad Proof

This 1957 Rolex advertisement proof from Asia is very similar to a 1955 version which you can see by clicking here. If you click on the link and see the original version of this ad you see the first known Rolex advertisement I know of for the Rolex Submariner. Click on the image below to be able to read it more clearly.

If you read this ad and then think about the historical significance of a watch we take for granted today, it is really profound. It is also profoundly interesting to understand that at the time of this advertisement, which has Hans Wilsdorf's name on it, that Hans Wilsdorf (The Founder of Rolex) had started Rolex 51 years earlier and was three years away from his death. Hans Wilsdorf must have been one proud man and his achievements to this day are astounding!!!

Rolex Macro Shot Of The Day: Dr. Noyola's Rolex Submariner

Rolex Macro Shot Of The Day
Dr. Noyola's Rolex Submariner
[Reference 16610]

Dr. Miguel Noyola lives in Mexico and he is a fan of Jake's Rolex World. Recently he took this amazing photo of his Rolex Submariner dial and sent it in to share with you. Click on it for better detail.

Update: Gogi asked in the comments section for this post:

"Why is there no 'ROLEX' inscription on the other edge? Are there Submariners with and without?"

The answer is yes. Around 2005 Rolex started etching "ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX" around the inside rim that houses the dial. This area is know formally as the rehaut area. At the same time Rolex decided to also etch the individual serial number of each watch on the bottom of therehaut area, just above the 6 o'clock marker–prior to that Rolex etched the serial number between the lugs where they were not visible unless you removed the bracelet.

So to specifically answer your question every watch made before Rolex started incorporating this design feature lacks the ROLEX rehaut writing, which is the case with this Submariner case (no pun intended ;-)

U.S. Navy Doctor Bought Submariner for $70 and sells if for $66,100

Superman Submariner
U.S. Navy Doctor Bought Submariner for $70 and sells if for $66,100
[Reference 5510]

All my Rolex collector friends have been talking about this story where a U.S. Naval Medical Student who was a SCUBA diver bought a Rolex Submariner [Reference 5510] in 1958 for $70, and recently put it on eBay for an opening bid of $9.95, thinking it was worth nothing, and he was shocked when it sold for $66,100. HODINKEE wrote a great story that covers all the fascinating details.
