Molduga are giant Monsters that swim through the Sand of the Gerudo Desert.[12] They resemble four-legged Fish and patrol their territories in search of prey. Molduga are sensitive to sound, and they will rise out of Sand to eat whatever they can find.[12] As a result, it is considered dangerous to enter the domain of a Molduga.[12]

Once they become aware of Link's presence, Molduga will barrel towards and attempt to ram into him. Molduga can be fought while Shield Surfing with the help of a Sand Seal. Due to their sensitivity to loud noises, Link can strike them with Remote Bombs or Bomb Arrows, causing them to be stunned once they jump out of the Sand.[13] When defeated, Molduga drops one or two Treasure Chests containing various Weapons, Molduga Fins, and Molduga Guts.

As part of the "Medicinal Molduga" Side Quest, Malena requires Molduga Guts in order to cure her husband's illness, but none of the soldiers in Gerudo Town are willing to defeat one for her.[14] When Link brings her Molduga Guts, she gives him a Gold Rupee as a reward.[15]

After Link defeats Calamity Ganon for the first time, he will be able to ask Kilton about Molduga.[11] As part of his research, he has determined that four Molduga can be found in the entirety of Hyrule.[16] Due to their size, Kilton is unable to safely approach them, so he asks Link if he could defeat all of them, allowing Kilton to analyze the scent their fluids leave behind.[17] When Link returns to Kilton after defeating all of the Molduga, he will be able to smell them clearly, and he gives Link the Medal of Honor: Molduga as a reward.[4]

As part of The Champions' Ballad Downloadable Content Pack, the Molduking will appear in the East Barrens. It is a more powerful subspecies of Molduga, known to build up energy by sleeping underground for hundreds of years.[1]

Molduga reappear in Tears of the Kingdom with the same appearance and behavior they had in Breath of the Wild. They are sensitive to explosions from Bomb Flowers and Time Bombs. They now also drop Molduga Jaws when defeated.

As part of the Side Quest "The Missing Owner", Link must save Isha from a Molduga in the Toruma Dunes.

Another Molduga appears in the Side Quest "WANTED: Molduga", where Link must defeat a Molduga found in the East Barrens.

Age of Calamity

The following section is not part of the Zelda canon and should not be taken as such.

Molduga are massive Powerful Foes that can be seen swimming through the Sand in Battles set in the Gerudo Town Stage. During the Scenario "Urbosa, the Gerudo Chief", the Warriors take advantage of their noise sensitivity to lure one out with the sound of Remote Bomb explosions.

Defeated Molduga drop Molduga Fins and Molduga Guts. After completing a Battle in which a Molduga was slain, the Warriors will receive a Molduga Trophy.

Age of Imprisonment

As in Age of Calamity, Molduga are giant Powerful Enemies that swim in Sand.

During the Movie "The Feint", Ganondorf directs a swarm of Molduga to attack Hyrule Castle to distract the King of Hyrule, Rauru, as Gerudo Soldiers attack.[18] With his powers bolstered by the aid of Queen Sonia and Princess Zelda, however, Rauru generates a massive beam of Light that wipes out the swarm. During the Scenario "Raging Sands", Ardi releases one more Molduga to attack Rauru, Sonia, and Zelda directly.[19]

Defeated Molduga drop Molduga Fins, Guts, and Jaws. At the end of a Battle, the Warriors will be awarded a Molduga Trophy for each defeated.

Nomenclature

Molduga may pay tribute to Molgera, the Boss of the Wind Temple in The Wind Waker. Molgera itself has its name derived from mogura, which is Japanese for mole.[citation needed] The four Molduga act similar to Molgera by being submerged in Sand, further supporting this claim.

  13. You...you haven't killed any Moldugas yet? Here, let me give you a hint. I've noticed that they're very sensitive to sound. If you scare them from a distance with a big noise, maybe you can stun them long enough to take them out. — Kilton (Breath of the Wild)
  14. I... I finally found the voe of my dreams, and I just recently married him... I thought I had finally found happiness... But then...my husband fell ill with a rare disease... One difficult to cure. The only thing that can save him is the guts of a Molduga... But I would never be able to take down such a creature myself... I asked the soldiers for help, but... Why would they want to help me? The Molduga is a menacing beast... None who face one escape unscathed... So perhaps it's foolish to expect anyone to stick their neck out for a stranger... I thought I'd finally gotten out of this town... Never thought I'd have to come crawling back... — Malena (Breath of the Wild)
  15. [Here, take 'em.] Wait, these... Molduga guts! You... You'll give these to me? Oh, sarqso! This is all I have to thank you with, but I insist you take it. — Malena (Breath of the Wild)
  16. [The giant sand beast.] The giant sand beast... More commonly known as the Molduga. They're giant monsters that live in the sand of the desert. According to my sources, there are only four of them in Hyrule. — Kilton (Breath of the Wild)
  17. I'm currently after them myself, but they're just so big! I can't even get near them... So could I ask you to find them and, uh, harvest their materials? I'm talking all of them. That way, I'll be able to analyze the scent of their fluids that will inevitably stick to your body during battle. That will allow me to determine their habits, behaviors, and overall qualities. I'm counting on you... — Kilton (Breath of the Wild)
