The Hidden King
“The stretching shadow of a skyscraper... a boarded-up apartment in Hell’s Kitchen... The Hidden King exists in the cracks of the city, waiting for his followers to usher him into the light.
The Hidden King is a Patron, as well as the name of his Team. His followers are The Hidden King's Court. The Archmother is his rival.
Overview
[edit | edit source]The Hidden King appears as a shadowy figure with antlers and glowing yellow eyes, bound to a burning wicker man effigy. Long, claw-like yellow hands extend from the shadows. His base is a factory filled with large speakers and microphones, and his side of the map features working-class red brick buildings labeled "Downtown".
The Hidden King does not speak to the heroes directly. Instead, a herald speaks on his behalf.[1][2][3]
Akin to the Archmother, the Hidden King's goals are unknown. According to The Doorman, the Hidden King has wanted to be summoned for "centuries".[4]
Warden and his family believe the Patrons will "herald the end of humanity" if left unchecked.[5] It's implied that the Hidden King wants to "usher in his new era".[6][7]
The Hidden King's herald mentions that the Hidden King is "returning to us".[2]
The Doorman refers to the Hidden King as Amber King.[8]

Trivia
[edit | edit source]- The Hidden King's name and appearance have similarities to The King in Yellow, a fictional supernatural entity created by Robert W. Chambers.
- The Hidden King was originally named The Amber Hand prior to the Old Gods, New Blood update. He also referred to himself as Anvil's Song in a removed voice line. This is referenced in a Warden unselect line.[9]
- A proposed rename to the Hidden King was The Broken Crown.
- The Hidden King announcer's voice actor was recast with the new model in the Old Gods, New Blood update. The current voice is speculated to be either Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs in Spongebob Squarepants) or Darin De Paul (Reinhardt in Overwatch). Developer Kaori has so far chosen not to reveal the name of either the current or previous voice actor to not "spoil the fun".[10] They have also said that the previous Amber Hand actor can still be heard in the game in a different role.[11]
