The Doorman/Lore
“It’s important to never overlook the help.
He's proper, he's polite, but the humble Doorman of The Baroness Hotel is more than meets the eye.
While he had only planned to experience life on this plane for a few weeks, The Doorman quickly discovered that the New York service industry was a great way to see the strange demands that please humans.
Overview
[edit | edit source]The Doorman's motivation in the ritual is to see the Patrons, since he hasn't seen them in a long time.[1][2] He doesn't seem to have a wish planned as he intends to return to the Baroness Hotel after the ritual.[3][4]
Biography
[edit | edit source]The entity known as "The Doorman" is an ancient extraplanar fledgling god and cosmic being[5][6][7] who used to slaughter and torment humans a long time ago, feeling glee at their fear and misery.[8][9][10]
At some point, the fledgling god decided to experience life on Earth disguised as a human for a few weeks, and either created the Baroness Hotel in New York or was employed there as soon as it opened.[8] He adopted the title of "The Doorman" to stay grounded in his new role,[11] and enjoyed it so much that he has stayed at the Baroness ever since.
The Doorman is capable of warping reality and bending space and time.[12][13][14] He claims to be able to see the future, although it's unknown if he's bluffing about it.[15] It's implied that the Doorman weakened himself to live amongst humanity.[16][17]
The Doorman once required the Baxter Society's intervention at the Baroness.[18]
The Doorman does not work at the Baroness alone, having coworkers such as "Jacques"[19] and "Francis".[20]
Personality
[edit | edit source]The Doorman is polite and respectful when talking to the other heroes, even if they are rude to him.[21][22] However, he has supernatural knowledge about them, and uses this to torment his enemies while they're trapped in the Baroness, or to convince them to stay and forget about the ritual.[23] During the ritual, he may fall back on his sadistic old ways when on a killstreak.[9][10]
The Doorman likes working at the Baroness since he gets to observe humanity.[24] He has a very dedicated work ethic, and finds that serving humans has a "novel charm" compared to his past experience of tormenting them.[8] He does not discriminate against any guests of the Baroness,[25] although he will kick people out if they cause a disturbance or break any rules.[26][27]
The Doorman often refers to the other heroes as "mortals", and believes they are weak and childish compared to him.[28][29][30] He looks forward to helping his allies "enrich their meaningless lives".[31]
Most heroes don't know the true nature of the Doorman and are surprised by his exceptional powers.[32] The OSIC seem to be aware of the Doorman's true nature, as they consider the Doorman participating in the ritual as "overstepping".[33] The Doorman occasionally teases his true nature in conversations with his allies, but doesn't linger on it.[8]
Appearance
[edit | edit source]The Doorman appears as a slender young white man with broad shoulders, glowing blue eyes, red hair with a front curl, and freckles on his cheeks. He wears a classic hotel uniform with a dark red jacket and round hat with gold and black accents, black pants with a golden stripe on the sides, black shoes, and white gloves. His jacket has a keyhole-shaped pin on his chest and keyhole-shaped buttons. He carries a glowing golden keyring in his back that he uses for Hotel Guest. His weapon is a bespoke handgun attached to a large round keyring, that shoots key-shaped bullets. He reloads his gun by throwing it in a small door portal, and then it exits through another door portal over his hand.
The Doorman's true appearance is unknown.
Information
[edit | edit source]The Doorman knows Oathkeeper and the Troubadour.[34][35]
Character Relationships
[edit | edit source]The Doorman calls the Patrons "old friends" and refers to them as City Mother and Amber King.[36][37]
Both Patrons are familiar with the Doorman, expressing surprise and joy at seeing him fighting on their behalf.[38][39] They respect the Doorman and view his murderous side as "who he was meant to be".[40]
Mirage and Nashala Dion are guests at the Baroness during their stay in New York. When on enemy teams, the Doorman feels sorry for killing Mirage,[41][42] and Mirage is upset for having to leave the Baroness.[43]
The Doorman is familiar with Calico and likes her.[44][45] He talks with her about "professional interests in town", likely meaning that Calico told him about her job as an assassin.[46]
The Doorman loves Ava and, in the event that Calico will be unable to take care of Ava anymore, says he'll treat her "like a queen" at the Baroness Hotel.[47][48]
The Doorman thinks Wraith is a "delight" and is grateful towards her since she's a generous tipper.[49][50] He calls her a friend.[51]
The Doorman thinks Lady Geist is rude and doesn't expect any tips from her.[52][21] Lady Geist believes that the Baroness has lost its standards.[53]
Apollo has stayed at the Baroness Hotel in the past.[54] He likes The Doorman and tipped him "last week".[55]
While the conversation is unfinished, The Doorman appears to give his best wishes to Apollo's father.[56]
Character Interactions
[edit | edit source]- The Doorman doesn't seem to know what
Warden wants,[57] which could mean he's telepathic like the
Patrons as opposed to being omniscient, since they can't read Warden's desires either.[58] The Doorman does seem familiar with Warden's parents and derides them as failures.[59][60]
- The Doorman respects
Infernus since they both work in the service industry and is apologetic when killing him.[61][62]
- The Doorman is actively keeping
Paradox out of the Baroness.[63]
- The Doorman has met
Drifter before.[64]
- The Doorman has kicked
Silver and
Vyper out of the Baroness.[26][27]
- The Doorman likes
McGinnis' inventions.[65]
- The Doorman likes
Paige's taste in books and invites her to host a storytelling event at the Baroness Hotel.[66][67]
- While trapped inside the Baroness, The Doorman attempts to split
Mo & Krill up from each other. He tells Mo that Krill is dead weight and that he should kill him, and he tells Krill that Mo is keeping him down and would be better off if he never met Krill.[68]
- When killing the Doorman, Krill reassures Mo that he'd never betray him.[69]
Mina and
Lady Geist don't like talking to The Doorman since they view him as just "the help".[70][22] However, Mina knows that Doorman is a "cosmic being".[7]
Ivy has had brunches at the Baroness before and is apologetic when fighting the Doorman.[71][72]
Venator recognises that Doorman is more ancient and powerful than he lets on.[5][73]
Seven knows that Doorman isn't normal and wants to uncover his secrets.[74][75] The Doorman thinks Seven is far from becoming the god that he wishes to be,[76] and believes he's more delusional than
Lash.[77]
