Seven/Lore

I freed myself from the shackles of the past, and my future looks bright.

When mystic energy awoke on Earth, the world changed... anything was possible. But just because anything WAS possible, didn’t mean that anything SHOULD be possible. And so the government made rules. Laws. A means for US citizens to enjoy the benefits of the supernatural world in safety. But rules and laws are for lesser men. Men with limitations. Men who were not Seven.

There are many rumors about what Seven did to land himself in Lost Whisper, an oubliette for the most dangerous of occultists. But there is no doubt about what happened on the night of his execution.

Wards placed by the most powerful ritualists of 7 different nations… wards designed to not just prevent mystical interference with the execution, but to simultaneously obliterate Seven's soul so that it could never be contacted, resurrected, or otherwise be used by someone looking to follow in his footsteps... failed.

Onlookers viewed in horror as the strongest mentalist employed by the US Army’s head popped like a grape. They screamed as Scotland Yard’s premiere occult investigator, the one who allegedly captured Seven, crumbled to ash. Seven's body buckled and writhed against his restraints; his skin burning from eldritch electricity... and yet he would not die. He laughed.

He laughed as he tore himself free from his bondage.

He laughed as his captors cowered in fear.

He laughed as he massacred his tormentors.

He laughed as he tasted the fresh air that was denied to him for years.

And he laughed when he thought about what he was going to do once he reached New York City.

Overview

[edit | edit source]

Seven's motive and wish in the ritual is to achieve "apotheosis",[1] meaning that Seven wants to become a god, or gain godlike powers.[2][3]

Biography

[edit | edit source]

Seven's life before his execution is shrouded in mystery. He mentions that he had to "scurry with the rats since he was a child",[4] and has done research on the Astral Gates, crediting Professor Dynamo as an influence in his work.[5] Seven mentions that he once loved someone,[6] and the ArchmotherArchmother says that Seven had a destiny that was denied to him, then his lover tried to steal that destiny for themselves.[7]

Seven claims he was imprisoned in Lost Whisper because he "offended small-minded simpletons with fragile egos".[8] He was also supposedly arrested for doing black/eldritch magic.[9] How Seven survived the botched execution is unknown, although Seven implies getting caught and sent to Lost Whisper was part of his plan.[10] The gear placed on his head during the execution has become stuck, and he believes it's impossible to remove.[11]

In the present day, Seven is hiding from the OSIC in New York's subway tunnels.[12][13] Seven's escape from Lost Whisper isn't public knowledge, but there is a rumour about it that the New York Oracle is investigating.[14] A reporter from the New York Oracle named Allie Kinkaid is writing a story on Seven and seems to be in contact with him.[15][16]

It's implied that Seven's true identity is Ettrick, an old acquaintance of Kelvin's who disappeared after the fundraiser for the arctic expedition that claimed Kelvin's life.[17][18][19]

Personality

[edit | edit source]

Seven is intelligent and eloquent, demonstrating knowledge on esoteric topics such as Astral Gates and the Ixian language.[5][20] He has a strong conviction that exceptional magic users should use their powers, regardless of how others might judge them for it. He criticizes those whom he perceives to be "wasting" their gifts,[6][21][22] and respects those who take action to change the world.[23][24] The other heroes don't trust Seven and often consider him to be scary and evil.[25]

Seven craves power and knowledge, refusing to let anyone stop him from learning or doing what he wants.[26][27][28] He is extremely confident in his abilities and intends to take over New York.[29][30][31][32] He calls himself a "visionary" and believes he will become powerful enough for the Patrons to bow to him.[33][34]

Seven has a deep sense of self-importance and is quick to snap back at others when he believes he's been disrespected.[35][36][37]

Seven says he doesn't like murder, but rather is "indifferent" to it.[38] He does enjoy letting fear sink into his victims, however.[39]

Appearance

[edit | edit source]
Seven's head without blindfold and headgear

Seven is a charred undead man wearing a ragged striped black, yellow and orange prison uniform. His face seems to be melted, showing a black skull with yellow plasma in its mouth, nose hole, and additional holes near the nose and cheeks. His eyes are obscured by a blindfold and a large metallic circular headgear with 3 tesla coils on top, connected by wires to a leather chestpiece with a gauge and a plate with the number "4279". On his back is an electricity gauge with loose wires. He has round metallic pieces on his shoulder, and leather straps with metal cuffs and chains on his hands, feet and hip. His weapon is similar to a Charlton automatic rifle, with coils attached.

When using Storm Cloud, Seven's body flickers and shows his skeleton.

Seven's appearance before his execution is unknown.

Information

[edit | edit source]

Seven's name may be a reference to Numerology, in which the number 7 is associated with spirituality and the search for knowledge.[40]

Seven's chestplate has numbers that form a Gorowase, a form of Japanese wordplay with numbers. 4279 can be read as Shi (4) Ni (2) Na (7) Ku (9) = Shininaku (死になく), or "Become unkillable" (rough translation).

Character Relationships

[edit | edit source]

Seven has a one-sided hatred towards Kelvin for unknown reasons.[41][42][43]

Kelvin thinks Seven "seems familiar".[44] When being healed by Kelvin, Seven is reminded of "old times".[45]

Both Seven and Kelvin have an interest on researching Astral Gates.[46][47]

Seven believes Kelvin has a bigger ego than Lash.[48]

A likely possibility is that Seven is Kelvin's old friend Ettrick, who "vanished". Lady Geist says Ettrick "caused a scene" at one of Kelvin's fundraisers.[17] This is supported by one of Seven's lines to Kelvin that mirrors one of Kelvin's lines about Ettrick.[18][19] Kelvin pushed Ettrick away due to his "ambition", which aligns with Seven's ambition to achieve apotheosis.[49] Seven also believes that mentors "use the young to achieve glories they could not achieve on their own", possibly referring to Kelvin.[50]

Haze has been ordered to hunt and kill Seven.[51][52] Haze has dreamed of the moment she kills Seven.[53]

When on the same team, Seven taunts Haze for working alongside him and asks how soon will they start fighting each other once the ritual is over.[54][55]

Allie is writing a story on Seven and seems to be in contact with him.[15][16]

In Holliday's visual novel, Allie gets Holliday in contact with Seven.

Seven knows that the Doorman isn't normal and wants to uncover his secrets.[56][57]

The Doorman thinks Seven is far from becoming the god that he wishes to be,[58] and believes he's more delusional than Lash.[59]

Character Interactions

[edit | edit source]
  • Seven criticizes Dynamo for wanting to "throw away" the "great gift" of his star form,[6] teases Infernus for "putting on a muzzle" and "wasting" his powers,[60][21] criticizes Celeste for masking her power at a sideshow,[12] and says McGinnis is "wasting her brilliance" working for Fairfax Industries.[22]
    • Seven respects Ivy for "seeing the world as it was and deciding it was not acceptable to her".[23]
  • Paradox is aware of Seven's safehouse in the tunnels and threatens to reveal its location.[61] Seven wants to commission Paradox for a job.[62]
  • Seven warns Graves that her mentor is using her to "live glories they could not achieve on their own".[50] He also warns Graves that the path she's on will eventually get her killed. Seven warns Graves because he "hates to see talent wasted".[63]
    • Graves would like to be Seven's "intern".[64]
  • Seven warns Rem to stay away from anyone who mentions the OSIC, claiming that they won't help Rem get home.[65] Rem finds Seven scary.[66]
  • McGinnis offers help to remove Seven's headgear.[11]
  • Paige swears she won't let her brother turn out like Seven.[67]
  • According to Rem, Seven smells like "evil s'mores".[68] This contrasts Kelvin's scent of "nice s'mores."[69]

Main article: Holliday's visual novel

Seven makes an appearance in Holliday's visual novel, currently untitled. Below is a brief summary of the existing chapters.

Note: Holliday's visual novel is currently inaccessible to the main game, instead being something planned for release in the future. As such, everything in the current visual novel is prone to change, as it is still undergoing development.

Seven is set to make an appearance in Holliday's visual novel, presumably in chapter 3d.

In chapter 2b, Holliday meets with her friend Allie Kinkaid to talk about a lead Allie had towards finding the Troubadour. Allie says she has a tip from someone with a "unique insight", and that the person with the tip wanted to help Holliday directly instead of the police. Allie refuses to reveal the identity of the tipper due to journalistic intergrity, despite Holliday's frustrations. Allie offers to get Holliday in contact with her source if she really wants to.

While everything beyond chapter 2 is unknown, in-game conversations between Seven and Holliday reveal that Allie's source is Seven.[15] What Seven knows about the Troubadour and why he wants to help Holliday is currently unknown.
