Today, my grandkids will be paid in blood.

A founding member of "The Baxter Society", Wesley Grey Talon spent close to 40 years hunting monsters that preyed on man before finally deciding to find a replacement and lay down his bow. Grey Talon's duties had meant that he never spent much time with his wife and kid, and now that his son had started a family of his own he realized that this was his last chance to reconnect with the people he loved.

Retirement suited Wesley. He made up for lost time with his wife. He doted on his grandkids. He cooked dinner for the whole family every Wednesday. He was happy.

Then he got the call.

The authorities claimed that it was a freak accident... that the fire consumed his son's house before anyone got a chance to escape. But Wesley knew better. His son's wife was an Ixian who could snuff out flame with a thought. If their bodies were found burned they had to be dead long before there was a fire.

And so Grey Talon has picked up his bow once more, and when he finds who's responsible there will be a bloody reckoning.

Overview

Grey Talon's motivation in the ritual is to bring retribution to the Friends of Humanity, an extremist neopolitical group whom he believes are behind the murder of his family.[1][2][3]

Biography

Wesley Grey Talon was one of the founding members of the Baxter Society, creating the organisation 5-8 years after the first Maelstrom.[4][5] His dedication to the society resulted in books being made about his life and earning him a reputation as a "legend".[6][7] His dedication to his work, however, meant he was often away from home, which meant he missed watching his son grow up.[8] Refusing to make the same mistake for his grandkids, Grey Talon retired after roughly 40 years of service.[9] When he retired, Grey Talon was said to have more confirmed kills than anyone else in the Baxter Society.[10]

For a few years, Grey Talon got to enjoy the retired life with his family. This would change when Grey Talon got a call that his son, daughter-in-law, and grandkids were all found dead in a house fire. Knowing that his daughter-in-law was an Ixian who could control fire, Grey Talon knew that the deaths of his family were staged, and that somebody was behind it.[9] While he does not know for sure, Grey Talon believes that John Hathorne, the leader of the Friends of Humanity, was behind the staged murder.[1][3] Vowing revenge, Grey Talon has left retirement to pursue bloody retribution.[2] Grey Talon hopes that, once he exacts his revenge, he'll be able to find peace.[11][12]

It's implied Grey Talon's family died less than a year before the ritual.[13] In that time, Grey Talon has been working with Vindicta to murder members of the Friends of Humanity.[14] There was a Friends of Humanity rally in Boston, where the security team for the event were found dead with arrows stuck in them.[15] Despite being famous himself, Grey Talon's revenge quest doesn't seem to be public knowledge. There are rumors about his actions, which are scaring a "lot" of people.[16] Grey Talon doesn't care that his actions may sully the name of the Baxter Society.[17]

Grey Talon, while retired, is still heavily respected by the Baxter Society.[18] Some characters ask if Grey Talon is fighting on behalf of the Baxter Society in the ritual.[19][20][21]

Grey Talon's Guided Owl is named Rohan.[22] His son was named Nathan.[23] Grey Talon's wife is still alive, and it's implied that she wouldn't approve of his quest for revenge.[24][25]

Personality

Grey Talon is a good man consumed by rage and despair. He isn't a talkative person[26][27] and especially dislikes it when people try to guilt him for his actions.[24][28] The life of a monster hunter, one with a high casualty rate, has hardened Grey Talon into a wise and stoic hunter.[29][30] He mentions that only some missions in the Baxter Society had "happy endings".[31] Despite this, Grey Talon misses the life of a hunter, and enjoys being able to hunt again in the ritual.[32][33]

Grey Talon is still mourning the death of his family.[34] Deep down, Grey Talon wishes he wasn't consumed by rage,[35] but feels a personal responsibility to exact revenge so he doesn't feel like he failed his family.[36][37] Grey Talon has also lost faith in justice,[38][12] and considers his life "hollow".[39]

Grey Talon is not a cruel man, as he often regrets fighting noble/kind-hearted characters like Dynamo and Ivy.[40][41][42] Most enemies respect Grey Talon and dislike fighting him.[43]

Appearance

Grey Talon's current model is inherited from his design in Neon Prime. He's a short, senior but strong Native American man. He has brown skin, black eyes, and long white hair split into two braids. His right arm is a greenish-blue metal prosthetic. He wears a white shirt, an orange sweater with a diagonal cut on the right side, dark green pants with a brown cover on the left side, black shoes with brown soles, and two metallic earrings. He carries futuristic pouches on his belt. His weapon is a modern recurve bow with a stabiliser. His Spirit Snare is shaped like a dreamcatcher.

Rohan is a glowing green owl.

Grey Talon was handsome in his younger years.[44]

Information

It's currently unknown which Native American tribe Grey Talon belongs to. Owls are commonly seen as a symbol of death in Native American folklore.[45]

Grey Talon has visited South Ixia and said it was "beautiful".[46]

Character Relationships

Grey Talon's family

Grey Talon loved his son, daughter-in-law and grandkids.[47][48]

Grey Talon's wife is still alive. Their relationship seems to be strained due to the deaths of their family and Grey Talon "throwing his life away" for revenge.[24][25]

Grey Talon views losing the ritual as failing his son.[36]

Shiv

Grey Talon chose Shiv to act as his replacement in the Baxter Society.[49][50]

Grey Talon has high hopes for Shiv, despite his criminal past, and holds him in high regard, placing Shiv in the top 8 of people he'd want fighting alongside him.[51][19]

One of Shiv's goals in the ritual is to prove his worth to Grey Talon.[52]

Silver can't believe Grey Talon stood up for Shiv.[53] Venator warns Grey Talon that, if Shiv slips up, he won't be able to protect Shiv from the Swords of Saint Benedict.[54]

Vindicta

Grey Talon and Vindicta have hunted the Friends of Humanity together and regard each other as friends.[55][56][57]

Vindicta calls Grey Talon by his first name and believes that, if her father was like Grey Talon, she would never have died during the Salem Witch Trials.[58]

Drifter

Grey Talon and Drifter have a long history with each other.

Drifter refers to Grey Talon by his first name.[59]

While Grey Talon despises Drifter,[60][61] Drifter holds Talon in high regards.[62][63]

Grey Talon suspects Drifter could have killed his family, although Drifter affirms that if he did murder them, he would have made Grey Talon watch.[64]

There was a particularly brutal interaction between the two in Oklahoma.[65]

Calico

Calico used to work with Grey Talon in the Baxter Society.

While Grey Talon is disappointed in Calico for becoming an assassin,[66] he doesn't resent her and was content to leave her alone.[67][68][69]

Calico views Grey Talon as a "relic of a bygone era",[70] but also says she will mourn his death if she kills him in-game.[71]

Haze

Haze and Grey Talon know each other. She refers to him by his first name and sent a card when his son Nathan died.

They haven't seen each other for "a while".[72][73]

Warden

Warden once looked up to Grey Talon and heavily respects him.[74][75]

When on opposing teams, Warden is shocked that Talon would willingly work for the Patrons.[76]

While Grey Talon appreciates Warden's conviction,[77] he believes that both he and Warden live "hollow lives".[39]

Neon Prime - Orion

Grey Talon's current model is inherited from his design in Neon Prime, in which he was called Orion.

Based on datamined textures, Orion had a long beard and wore a visor. He had a 4-legged alien pet that was reused for Trapper's model.

Orion's bow was called Koschei, presumed a reference to the character of the same name in Russian mythology.

Orion's character was similar to Grey Talon's: a retired hunter.[100] Orion also wanted to live "one last adventure" and was trying to save his family.[101][102]
