Group Capt. Shubhanshu Shukla

The Second Indian Astronaut in Space and the first to visit the International Space Station



 Air Mail Society India Foundation (AMSI) released a special cover on 25th June 2025 to celebrate the launch of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the second Indian in space and the first headed for the International Space Station.

 

This cover was produced in a limited quantity of 100 individually numbered covers and carries the Permanent Pictorial Cancellation of the National Aeronautical Laboratory (NAL) Bengaluru depicting the ISRO Rocket. A cover was mailed to each AMSI member as a memento.

5 September 2024 : National Teacher's Day



Teachers' Day, celebrated annually on September 5 in India, honors the tireless efforts of educators who shape the minds and futures of their students. This day marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a philosopher, scholar, and former President of India, who believed that "teachers should be the best minds in the country." It is a special day for the appreciation of teachers. It also includes celebrations to honor them for their special contributions in a particular field area.

Kerala Postal Circle today released a special cancellation on Teacher's Day. The members of Ananthapuri Philatelic Association along with postal department staff at the releasing function in Thiruvananthapuram Philatelic Bureau.

Here is a beautiful se-tenant pair of stamps issued by Serbia Post to commemorate  International Women's Day 2022.The theme of 2022 International Women’s Day is “gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”.

International Women’s Day is an international day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women. It was first celebrated in the United States on 28 February 1909, but the following year, at the first International Conference of Women in Copenhagen, at the initiative of Clara Zetkin, it was decided to celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March, in memory of the protests of female workers in the textile industry held in New York in 1857.

As International Women’s Day, 8 March was first officially celebrated in 1911 by more than a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. The first celebration of Women’s Day in Serbia was organised in Belgrade in 1914.

In the early 1970s, the United Nations officially declared 8 March International Women’s Day, and today it is celebrated around the world, and in more than 55 countries it is an official national holiday.

A Star is Born! (Newsweek, August 2nd, 1976)

On the occasion of her birthday, as a sign of respect, admiration and gratitude to Nadia Comaneci, the world champion of women’s gymnastics, Romfilatelia dedicates to her the postage stamps issue “Happy Birthday, Nadia!”.

The issue consists of a stamp, with the face value of Lei 9, an imperforated souvenir sheet, with the face value of Lei 31.50 and a First Day Cover.

On the stamp of the souvenir sheet is depicted a sequence from a beam exercise performed by Nadia Comaneci and on the First Day Cover are illustrated stamps and souvenir sheets dedicated, over time, to the famous sportswoman.

This philatelic project is an opportunity to relive the excitement of the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, when a girl originating from the lands of Moldova became an international star.

For Romania and Romanians everywhere, Nadia belongs to the national heritage, her name being associated with Romania more than any other. The appreciation and admiration for the special merits she had throughout her sports career went around the world, remaining in the souls of all Romanians everywhere.

Romfilatelia thanks Mrs. Nadia Comaneci and the Nadia Comaneci Foundation in Romania for the documentary and photographic support granted in the development of this postage stamps issue.


Nadia Elena Comăneci Conner (born November 12, 1961), known professionally as Nadia Comăneci is a Romanian, retired gymnast and a five-time Olympic gold medalist, all in individual events. In 1976 at the age of 14, Comăneci was the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10.0 at the Olympic Games. At the same Games (1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal), she received six more perfect 10s for events en route to winning three gold medals. At the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Comăneci won two more gold medals and attained two more perfect 10s. During her career, Comăneci won nine Olympic medals and four World Artistic Gymnastics Championship medals.




Comăneci is one of the world's best-known gymnasts and is credited with popularizing the sport around the globe. In 2000, she was named as one of the Athletes of the 20th Century by the Laureus World Sports Academy. She has lived in the United States since 1989, when she defected from then-Communist Romania before its revolution in December that year. She later worked with and married American Olympic, gold-medal gymnast Bart Conner, who set up his own school. In 2001 she became a naturalized United States citizen, and has dual citizenship, also maintaining her Romanian citizenship.

VP Naidu releases postage stamp in memory of Rajyogini Dadi Janki


Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu released a commemorative postage stamp yesterday 12 April 2021 in the memory of former Chief of Brahma Kumaris Rajyogini Dadi Janki in New Delhi . Speaking on the occasion, Mr Naidu said, what makes Brahma Kumaris so special is that the organisation is led by women. He said they have demonstrated that spiritual attainments transcend gender-based distinction. The Vice President said, society needs to be educated on equal rights to women in every field, not merely in letter, but in spirit, as well. He said, spirituality is the basis of all religions and the same spiritual thread binds them together. Mr Naidu said, we should draw inspiration from Dadi Janki’s life which was dedicated to God and to selfless service of humanity.

Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad was also present on the occasion.

2 October - International Day of Non - Violence

 



Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on 2nd October to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.  The UN General Assembly announced on 15 June 2007 that it adopted a resolution which declared that 2 October will be celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence.

Tributes to great leaders of India

Today is also the birth anniversary of  Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri.


Lal Bahadur Shastri was an Indian politician who served as the second Prime Minister of India. He promoted the White Revolution – a national campaign to increase the production and supply of milk – by supporting the Amul milk co-operative of Anand, Gujarat, and creating the National Dairy Development Board.

Vice President, ShriVenkaiah Naidu,  released a commemorative postage stamp on Calavala Cunnan Chetty on 24th August 2019 at University of Madras, Chennai.


Paying glowing tributes to Dharmamurthi Rao Bahadur Calavala Cunnan Chetty for the philanthropic work undertaken by him during the pre-Independence time, Shri Naidu complimented the Trustees for earnestly carrying forward his legacy and noble vision for the welfare of the society.
The Vice President said that Shri Calavala Cunnan Chetty singularly took up the mission of social upliftment of society when the country was under colonial rule and there were hardly any social welfare schemes run by the Government.
He opined that it was necessary to recognize the contribution of wealth creators and wealth distributors like Chetty guru who not only provide revenue to the Government and create jobs, but also contribute to social good.

He was a poet, devotee, philosopher and master-teacher.

International Women's Day is celebrated across the world every year on March 8. 

WSSB Employees Association commemorated this event by releasing a special cover on International Women's Day 2018

Prof Udupi Ramachandra Rao, born in the year Neutron was discovered, went on to become the nucleus of India's Space Programme. As one who strongly believed in 'Science for the Society', it is not at all surprising that early space missions focused on weather forecasting, telecommunication and prospecting the rich natural resources of India, As Chairman of ISRO as well as of Space Commission, Prof Rao indigenously built the necessary rockettechnology for all the space missions. This spirit continues to this day. 
In recognition of his monumental work, the Government of India awarded the prestigious 'Padma Bhushana' in 1976 and the 'Padma Vibhushana' in 2017. 

Sri Siddeshwara Sankramana Jatra Centenary




Sri Siddeshwara Samstha was founded in the year 1898 and this institution is serving the society through its religious, social, academic and cultural activities. The institution has set up one "Go Raksha Kendra" and "Prashanth Ashram" in Kaggod Village on 31.03.2014. The institution is celebrating Sri Siddeshwar Sankramana Jatra, annual fair of Sri Siddeshwara Temple on Makara Sankranti day every year. The Centenary year of Jatra Mahothsav is being celebrated in 2018.
