Adeptus Mechanicum 2

A bit more progress on the Ad Mech.

It would have been more but I had to read Inferno (I had to, I had no choice).

The Domitar is built in sub sections and primed in it's shiney metal base colour.

Normally I just build things and be damned, but this time I am trying to have some forethought and make painting easier by keeping the models in sub assemblies until I reach a stage that they have to go together.

The four Scyllax are also getting there.

The bodies, floatey leg things and the mechadendrites are together.

Bottom right you can see the WIP flamer arm I am building for one of these. The lower arms and their heads got sprayed along with the Domitar.

What I am undecided about is the servo arms which is meant to be mounted on their backs, I think if I added them they wouldn't last long.

Also to finish off are the alternative arms for the Magos.

Adeptus Mechanicum 1

Well I'm having fun.

These are at a state that I will be able to take them this Friday to Warhammer World for a pre-Horus Heresy Weekender gathering.

These were, and I will not lie, a bitch to put together.

There is a lot paint wise to do, brass to add, details to paint and so on. But at least there has been some progress.

I put the base metal colour down using a spray can, I wanted a quick and easy way to get the majority of the work done.

Vorax. Truly hated building these.

As you can see the one ammo belt broke, this was before I had started building them.

The Magos uses the body of a Myrmidon. I am magnetising all the arms and building different options for him. At the moment I am just painting the ones I need for this Friday. The other options have some more work to do on them.

Castellex, second hand and a bit rough. It'll do.

The Thallax. Not as bad as the Vorax but still a bitch.

I ave also done the ZM bases for most of the AM force, there are more not shown.

For the models I went for a bright silver colour as the base. This was because I wanted to make sure they would stand out from the darker ZM board (when I paint it) and the models bases.

Recalcitrant Daze - Heresy and Blood Bowl

Several weeks from the last post not a lot has happened.

I made a start on my Adeptus Mechanicum Zone Mortalis force, however as you can see below it hasn’t progressed far.

I also half three Vorax half built. I am not enjoying building these. At all.

The lack of progress is partly due to how long it is taking to build them and partly the fact the Christmas break went far too quickly and before I knew it I was back in work and back doing the degree.

I did take off this weekend past to get in some games of Blood Bowl.

It’s been a long time since I have played Blood Bowl. It was good to handle some oddly shaped spikey balls again.

I am tempted to pick up the forthcoming Ogre, just to add a bit of variety to the Human team and some hitting power. Long term I won't be doing anything with the two teams from the box as I am waiting for the Nurgle team to be released. Until then I'll have to make do with the Orc and Human teams. Hopefully Papa Nurgle won't wait too long.

Now this time next week my mind will be turning very much to the Horus Heresy Weekender.

My shopping list is quite short...

...and if it is there the next Imperial Armour book. That, at the moment, is it.

I will do the usual multiple posts after the event, and possibly on the Saturday evening as well.

Blood Bowl, Zone Mortalis and Twitter

Things are still packed over here, too much work, too little time.

However, as always is the way having no time to do do anything with models hasn't stopped me buying them.

Blood Bowl...

Ah, Blood Bowl, lovely, lovely Blood Bowl.

In the box is also Death Zone with the extra rules. In there is the Nurgle team, I will be waiting for those to arrive before really 'doing' a team. The human and Orcs in the box will just get built to get some games in. They'll stay in the coloured plastic they come in I think.

Zone Mortalis.

I've been sorting through my Adeptus Mechanicum models and sorted out the 500 point force I'll be working on over Christmas with the plan of getting them done for the Horus Heresy Weekender in February.

The force numbers seven models. Surely I can manage that? Especially when one is already built...

In the Blood Bowl order I also picked up the set of daftly named Haemotrope Reactors. I plan to use these as terrain in Zone Mortalis. I admit now I'm not a fan of the big AM skull panel and the Orky like exhaust things, they will definitely be left off.

Twitter.

So I've done something I never planned to do. I've joined Twitter. Not, I hasten to add, to follow vacuous celebrities and their ilk. When I was at Warhammer World for the 40k Open Days I got talking to someone whose work I admired but who no longer posts on his blog or on forums. He finds being able to put up the odd update on Twitter far easier.

It occurred to me that I might be missing out on the work by others, known or unknown to me, by not being on their.

So I signed up. And at that point I'm not sure what else to do. I'm guessing the next step is to start following people. Who is the question.

So if you know of anyone on Twitter who is worth following (hobby related...) please give me a heads up.

I plugged for @Rictus40k on there. As annoyingly someone already had the version without the '40k' bit added on, rather inconsiderate of them wasn't it?

Forge World Open Day 2016 - Part 1 - Blood Bowl, Horus Heresy Marines & AM, Lord of the Rings

Blood Bowl:

Expect end of year release, we shouldn't have to wait long till we get a confirmed release date and price. As this is being released world wide through GW stores they have to build in 4 months to ship stock to Australia.

As such blame them for the time it is taking.

Recalcitrant Daze and the Horus Heresy

This evening I started to get my Orks out to see what needed to be shifted.

While doing that I got seriously side tracked in getting out everything I have picked up for my planned Horus Heresy armies. These are a Zone Mortalis Adeptus Mechanicum force and a larger Death Guard army.

I have been picking up bits here and there for some time but not started building anything as yet. My main aim was to get other things finished first before starting another project.

But while I had everything out I thought I would take stock as I really hadn't been keeping track that well.

Adeptus Mechanicum.

This is a 1000 point Zone Mortalis force. So all infantry and walkers.

I'm a big fan of the FW Adeptus Mechanicum range, they have done a great job of getting the vibe of the AM without going the easy route of just taking the usual Imperial vehicles and units and sticking on a cog symbol or two.

So for my force we have the following:

Myrmidon Secutor which will be the Magos leading the force.
Two units of Thallax
Castellex (off ebay).
Vorax squad (also off ebay actually).
Domitar.
Scyllax Guardian Automata unit.

I will be starting these guys soon - as the Orks are on their way out I want a new ZM force asap.

Ok. At this point it gets a bit embarrassing.

I have been picking up units and models for this force since FW launched their Heresy range. I may have got a bit carried away, spreading the purchases out so much means it is surprisingly easy to lose track...

I would hate to know how much that lot totals. A ridiculous amount I am sure. I may have an addiction.

Actually it was quite handy getting everything out, it's allowed me to get a fix on what is needed to be done and will allow me to plan out the squads. I really need to start these sometime soon..maybe I can get a small force together in time for the next Heresy Weekender.

Adeptus Mechanicus Icon 3 - Basing Up

While I am now feeling a lot better than I was I am finding I still have little time to do any hobby stuff due to work annoyingly taking over.

All I have managed is the odd half hour here or there on a couple of mini-projects.

The first one is trying out the AdMech icon I cast up on a base.

I thought about having the icon popping out of some rubble, so I set about knocking one up.

By angling the mould you can get some part casts which are perfect for that half buried look...

All they need is a quick sand for a flat base and then they can glue them in place onto a base (a mini or a terrain base).

After an undercoat it looks like this:

Considering how quick I knocked it up with really very little care I think it looks decent enough. With more time spent putting one together I think the part angled casts will be perfect for this sort of thing.

It is now going to go into a box as I've got no use for it, I only built it as I wanted to see how the casts would turn out. I don't use the big flyer oval bases for my aircraft and I don't have any use for a rubble base so this is a bit unneeded to say the least.

Adeptus Mechanicus Icon 2

So the last week has been another quiet one with me still being in no state to do any real model work.

As such I only managed to keep my eye in by working on the Adeptus Mechanicus icon.

I gave the icon an undercoat to help highlight any areas which needed more work. I spotted some things which needed to be worked on more, such as the sunken area round the edge and around the eye and nose.

The icon then got another undercoat...

At this point there wasn't much else I could do but do a mould and get a cast done:

Few air bubbles in the mould which was annoying but no problem to clean them up on the cast itself.

Plan is to turn a couple of these into rubble for bases. Plus when (I say when but 'if' would be more appropriate) I build city fight and Zone Mortalis boards these will come in very handy.

Now there is a chance I will get asked the question so I will say now I won't be selling any casts.

Adeptus Mechanicus Icon 1

So I decided to go for a quick, small project before getting back into more involved hobby work. Something quick and easy to 'get my eye in' as it were. And something which wouldn't give me a (literal) headaches which most things seem to at the moment.

A while back I picked up a Forge World Adeptus Mechanicus Icon piece off ebay. I am 99% certain it is actually a recast going by the resin used and the quality of the casting.

Above is what it should have looked like. Below you can see what it actually looked like...

You can see lots of miscasts, cables are all rubbish and many details are lost or obscured and the thinner parts of the eye socket and nose walls are missing. Air bubbles in the mould have left some areas of clean up and one part of the cog border actually sags down.

I have always wanted one of these, no idea why as I have no real use of it, but I decided to have a try at rescuing the piece.

So first off I removed a lot of the details...

I ended up having to remove a bit more resin as I went along rebuilding everything.

After a days work I have ended up with this finished piece (though after I undercoat it I may go back and do some clean up work which is required).

Quite happy in the end how it turned out.

Not sure what to do with it, probably hold on till I can incorporate it into some terrain.

Enginseers Chimera

Another blast from the past post tonight.

I built this quite some time ago now (five years or so I think, I can't be bothered going through my old Warseer log to find out).

At the time I was still thinking of doing an Imperial Guard army and I wanted a ride for my Enginseer.

The crane comes from a 1/35 scale kit as do the rear support pieces (though a different kit) as do some of the stowage. You can probably spot the Cities of Death pieces added to the top. It was a nightmare sanding that large AdMech symbol down to fit on top.

Overall I was never that happy with it. I liked the rebuilt hull (inspired by the Trojan shape) but the side skirts didn't look right and the servitor in the back panel didn't work as well as I hoped. I did like the dozer though.

Most of the pieces remained removable for ease
of (someone else's) painting.

I do hope to make another one one day, but a lot better than this one. There a lot of things I would do different which would result in a much better final result. However finding the time to do it will be a problem.
