Scatter Terrain 8

Things have been a bit quiet update wise due to a. it's been too hot to do much, b. i had a headache yesterday and c. what i have been doing is moulds or casting so nothing new worth showing.

However I realised I hadn't done an update on the generator 3D model for a while - I actually did some work on it a fortnight ago but completely forgot to do the update (I've not had time to do anymore since alas).

So, here is the update from a fortnight back.

Basically I was happier with the Mk II version of the control panel but there were some elements from the Mk I that I really liked. In particular the curved top shape with a control workstation either side.

So I went back to the Mk I, re-worked some things and introduced elements from the Mk. II.

I coloured a few things to make them stand out a bit better. I decided to make the two work stations different, I found it more pleasing to the eye then having the two sides mirror each other.

And the obligatory 'stuck-on-the-side-of-the-generator' shot:

I am tempted to make one more change, namely to make the station longer (so it protrudes further from the generator). It would only be 5-10mm but I think it might be a better look. I shall experiment and then decide...

Bunker Doors 3 & Scatter Terrain 7

Right, first off apologies for the lack of any actual models on RD recently. My airbrush has packed up which has put me off doing any more on the Grot Tanks as until the new one (on order) arrives there isn't much I can do as I need it for the weathering.

I am away for this weekend but next week the airbrush should be here and some updates involving physical models should once appear.

Until then here is another update on the bastion/bunker door and the generator.

Bunker/Bastion Door.

Not a huge amount of progress on this one.

I had to change the step a few times (like a mil here, half a mil there etc) so that I could get the treadplate pattern on the top of it to work. I had to change the treadplate arrangement slightly from my usual to get it to fit. However it shouldn't be noticeable.

I am uncertain on the plates either side of the door. I need to do a keypad so I can better design that whole area. For now think of these plates as place holders for something better.

The skull sensor thing went for a more practical vision hole thing, again tweaks need to be made.

Scatter Terrain - Generator

On the generator I have changed a few things.

First off the detail area got re-worked (again), I much prefer this version.

After that I returned to the cutouts and added 'ribbing', for that plasma generator look...

I started looking at the control panel to bolt onto the end.

This is Mk. I - a two sided design. But I really wasn't happy with it.

In position:

With Stickman Barry for an idea of scale.

So today I moved onto Mk. II of the control panel. I think it is getting there.

And as before some in position shots:

Still alot to do and many refinements.

But, the next update will definately be involving an actual model...

...almost certainly.

Bunker Doors 2 & Scatter Terrain 6

Well today I did a bit more work on the 3D models for the generator and one of the bunker/bastion door options.

Bunker/Bastion Door.

I took Option E and started to refine the idea. Some things have changed you wouldn't notice, such as the angle of the front face, the thickness of the whole thing etc.

The step at the front has had some work, I'll be adding some treadplate to the top face of the step.

The recess for the keypad has changed position and shape. The final piece will have a plate added over the front of the recess, for ease of casting it will be added to each cast piece though.

I also modified the door slightly, the banding has changed in more ways that you will notice in the pics. I still have to redo the skull area. I am thinking I will ditch the whole sensor unit idea and go for something more practical, vision slit/eye hole or similar.

Still quite a lot to do yet before I decide if I go with this option or the Option A as seen in the first post.

Scatter Terrain - Generator

First thing I tackled today was the detail area on the side. Really didn't like the first version so I scrapped everything there and started from scratch.

I am happier with this version, though things may change further. It was definitely worth getting the AdMech cog in there.

The re-worked side detail area.
I also changed the cutout shape and size. It isn't a huge change but I do prefer the new shape. The cutouts are wider but not as tall. Where before the cutouts appeared parallel (though they weren't) they now look more wedge shaped, while the material between them looks parallel (though again they actually aren't).

A comparison of the two versions show the difference in the cut outs more clearly:

And finally the obligatory group shots:

This too still needs work but the main thing to do for the generator now is a control unit which can be added to the end.

That will be the next job, as once that is done I may go back to modify the generator so that the two pieces look good when brought together.

Scatter Terrain - 5 - Generator

Continuing the search for more pieces to get printed I decided to do a 'Generator'. Ideal for Zone Mortalis as well as being useful for regular games.

The idea came about as I was looking through some old pictures of terrain I did back in early 2006. I made some small city fight ruins as test pieces for larger ruins. The idea was for these small buildings to be part of a set linked together with pipe work. In one building I used some pieces from old inhalers to form a 'generator' unit.

One day I will have the time and space for doing Cityfight terrain...
...one day...

As you can see they were pretty rough and basic. Frankly they look even worse than I remember.

But as an idea I still liked it. I wanted to do the same, but better. Individial units that can be lined up or used individually. I was also happy with the size of them, small enough to go in ZM rooms but not so small that units of them will be lost on a regular gaming board.

So today I started work on the 3D model...

Lined up as a group:

To give an idea of their size here are some Barry shots. For Barry I did a quick model, the base is the size of a GW model base while the horizontal line is 28mm up from the base, so in theory approximately in line with a GW models eyeline.

I also did very quick and basic ZM layout to show them set up in a large room (in hindsight probably larger than we would have in ZM). You can see they will be big enough to block movement and give cover but they won't be so big to be a problem in rooms.

In principle I am happy with the design. But I do want to improve the side detail as it isn't quite right yet. I am considering doing a seperate end piece which would incorporate a control panel. Each unit (whether it be a single unit or a row of them) can have one added to it.

Detail oon the side i'm not quite happy with.
So providing the cost isn't too high and I am happy with the side detail once I have re-done it this is one more thing which will be on the shopping list to get printed. I am still on the look out for more items to get done.

But before I start any new 3D models I will finish both this one and the bunker/bastion door.
