Stump Report on Nature Friday

Above is The Stump, after Milton and the tree that came down.
Below is a photo from this week,  9 weeks later

The rocks were hidden under all the debris, I cleared it and planted ferns, and weeds and flowers from other parts of our yard.

Above is Moss Rose, you saw it growing in the ground, in the front yard behind the stump they removed. It was 1/3 the size it is now when I transplanted it 5 weeks ago. I had no idea how moss rose can spread so quickly.

These are weeds that are growing every where right now. We are still in drought, and they are drought resistant and wow do they grow with ever other day I water them with the hose

three types of weeds transplanted when 6 inch size, now 12 to 16 inches tall. I dug them up from the other side of the yard.

What's along the fence around the stump. Rememeber the dead and dying hibiscus?

Changed by a few weeks of watering. and check out the new growth

Before the storm, I rescued these 4 palms from the curb of a house that threw them out. They have been waiting to be planted. Soon I will transplant a long the fence.
Side yard, still a work in progress.

Notice behind the trees, Nature is doing her thing, all it needs is water

The Week End and the Backyard Stump

When you last saw the stump of the pine tree removed from our trashed yard, it looked like this, Our chainlink fence and NO privacy fence that had fallen over. The fence is UP and I got a bee in my bonnet to make that stump look better, I used the hose to find the rocks that were buried after I raked all the trash and put in the big blue trash can.. I have been watering it daily and stuff is starting to grow. I intended to plant ferns on it but gave out, to pooped to plant

I have small trees I could plant but the dirt has so many roots there is no way for us to dig a hole.

you can't see them, but there are two of these Emilia, aka Red Tassel Flowers, Bob found them in the side yard, I picked them and put in the glass and the next morning they were even more open.. I transplanted both plants in the stump pile. They are growing bigger each day. the link says they are invasive, Woo Hoo, invade that stump dear Emilia....

Above is what I have transplanted on the stump pile. the red one is Emilia, there are two of them, and the others are moss ross saved from the old stump in the front yard and a 3rd one I did not get a photo of. there is enough dirt to support flowers, and I might just try sowing seeds.

The Heart of the Stump!

Sunrise, Thursday Morning, 6:30. I asked Beau if we could walk straight and not turn right, by asking I mean I walked straight, and he allowed me to. ha ha
I wanted to check on the stump with the green growing and Wow was I glad we went.
In the two days since we were there, this is what we found.

they sliced the big one in half and in half again

Look below, the green is even taller, and they sliced and diced and found
the Heart of the stump. that must be where the green is growing from
click to enlarge if you want details. Beau was so good to wait for me..

Do you see the heart of this stump?

Moses-in-the-Cradle

Tradescantia spathacea AKA Moses-in-the-cradle, Oyster Plant

The Pothos I pulled from the back yard, wilted and was very unhappy in the bright sun. This pretty purple plant is all over the yard, here and there, and was growing under one of Bob's junk piles just a few feet from the stump.  It is cuddling with Mexican Heather now.
I yanked it up and threw the Pothos in the trash bin and stuck it here. It's beautiful and it grows here like a weed and is beautiful year-round. You can read the wonders and odd things about it HERE . this plant is poisonous, and is also used in Asia and Mexico as many different medicines. Read All About it at the link.. It really is interesting.

If I had the energy, I could gather up a lot of throw out planters, run around the yard yanking up about 6 different plants, and put them out by the curb and the tourists/winter residents would buy them.  When we moved here we bought many of our plants/trees from a neighbor 2 blocks over that did that. He turned his entire back yard into a Florida Plant nursery and did really well selling to people in the neighborhood.

Do Tree Stumps Speak To You?

I love trees. I love them live, dead, tall, and short and as left over Stumps. These stumps I found in the white beach sand on the shore of the Manatee River at Emerson Point Preserve.

when I make the decision on photos for the day, I GOOGLE. Tree Stumps

googled brought this up first.

Question from unknown person: My husband had to cut down a large tree close to our home last year, but it has left a stump near our front porch and I am at a loss as to what to do about it. We have tried to dry it out, dig it up, grind it; nothing will get rid of this thing. Is there some way to mask it??
Answer from unknown: How high is the stump? You can always grow clematis over it. (Per Google, Clematis is an evergreen plant that spreads and covers whatever it is planted on and has beautiful blooms)

Per dictionary:a stump is the lower end of a tree or plant left after the main part falls or is cut off;I prefer the ones that are not sawn by man, but they can still be beautiful.

This is a cypress stump, Lovely in color and shape

In 1985, the year I married my husband, before he left for the day, he said call a tree trimmer and get them to trim the limbs on the ear tree. That is his name for a Jacaranda tree because they drop ear shaped pods the size of an ear all year long. Tree trimmer came, I pointed out what to trim. I did NOT stand and watch what they were doing. Young man comes to the door for his check and says "I took down the stump by the drive way at no extra charge". As my mind frantically starting forming phrases on what to tell my husband when he came home, I smiled and said thank you while my mind Screamed OH NO, NOT the stump.

You see, my husband LOVED that stump. He made that stump for a reason. Before I entered his life, the palm tree died, he cut it down to 3 feet tall and put a planter with Asparagus fern on it. the planter sat on the stump and the ferns hung down beautifully. I had removed the planter to prevent it from being knocked off by falling limbs.

Do stumps speak to you? If not, What does speak to you?

Bob: WHAT HAPPENED TO THE STUMP?
Sandra: "the tree trimmer took out your stump, no I was not watching them, I am sorry I did not pay attention to what they were doing. remember there is no need to cry over spilled milk, in this case there is no need to cry over removed stump".

That is not ALL that was said between us. At least we both share a love of stumps

Did you know they are selling tree stump posters on Allposters.com? So maybe I am not the only stump lover around.
