Don Nix - Passing Through (Re-Repost)

Don Nix - Passing Through  - 2008

Don Nix started out as guitar player who fell under the spell of the music brought into Memphis homes on Dewey Phillip’s “Red, Hot, and Blue” radio program. Joining forces with childhood friends guitarist Steve Cropper and bassist Donald “Duck” Dunn, Nix made the switched to saxophone as a member of the Royal Spades. The other horn player was the mercurial Charles “Packy” Axton, a man who loved music almost as much as he loved alcohol. The plot thickens when Axton’s mother, Estelle, forms a partnership with Jim Stewart to open a recording studio fronted by a record store. The operation becomes a focal point of the area’s musical community, eventually becoming the celebrated Stax Record label.

A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Nix came from a musical family (his brother, Larry Nix, became a mastering engineer for Stax and for the Ardent Recording Studios in Memphis). Don Nix began his career playing saxophone for the Mar-Keys, which also featured Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn and others. The hit instrumental single "Last Night" (composed by the band as a whole) was the first of many successful hits to Nix's credit. Without Nix, the Mar-Keys evolved into Booker T. & the M.G.'s.

As a producer, Nix worked with other artists and producers, such as Leon Russell of Shelter Records; Gary Lewis and the Playboys in Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars; George Harrison, of the Beatles; and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. One notable achievement was his collaboration with Harrison, Russell, and many others in the production of the "Concert for Bangladesh", Nix agreed that he organized backing chorus group for benefit concert at Madison Square Garden in 1971

Throughout his career, Nix worked behind the scenes as producer, arranger, and musician and in other roles for artists including Lonnie Mack, Furry Lewis, Freddie King, Albert King, Delaney, Bonnie & Friends, Isaac Hayes, the Staple Singers, Jeff Beck, Brian May, Eric Clapton, and many others. He wrote and produced albums for solo artists and for groups, such as Don Nix and the Alabama State Troupers, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, and Larry Raspberry and the Highsteppers.

His song, "Going Down", originally released by the band Moloch on their eponymous album in 1969, has become a rock-and-roll standard, having been covered by Freddie King, Jeff Beck, Deep Purple, JJ Cale, Marc Ford, Chicken Shack, Bryan Ferry, Pearl Jam, Gov't Mule, Sam Kinison, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Satriani, the Who, Led Zeppelin, Sammy Hagar, Joe Bonamassa, Sturgill Simpson, and others. Nix released a version of the song as a single for Elektra Records in 1972. The song "Black Cat Moan" was covered on the 1973 album Beck, Bogert & Appice. The Rolling Stones performed "Goin' Down" with John Mayer and Gary Clark, Jr. live on Pay-Per-View television on December 15, 2012, as part of the Stones' 50th Anniversary Tour.

Don Nix - Going Down The Songs of Don Nix (Re-Re-Post)

Don Nix & Friends - Going Down The Songs of Don Nix - 2002

Don Nix has been the musical equivalent of a supporting actor in a career that has spanned more than 40 years. He played saxophone with the Mar-Keys, one of the first successful acts on Stax Records; produced albums for Freddie King, Albert King and Delaney & Bonnie; and sang at George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh. He made his biggest mark as a soul/blues/rock songwriter for such artists as the aforementioned Kings, Tracy Nelson, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Jerry Garcia and J.J. Cale.

Going Down: The Songs Of Don Nix gives him the opportunity to revisit his old songs and present some new ones, with the help of a stellar supporting cast that includes Steve Cropper, Dan Penn, Tony Joe White, Bonnie Bramlett and Billy Lee Riley. At 61, Nix shows his voice has not lost its edge on the title track, a signature song for blues titan Freddy King. “Lucinda” recalls the spirit of a 1950s Little Richard rocker, while “Going Back To Iuka” has a swampy feel with White on lead guitar and Riley on lead vocals.

Don Nix And Alabama State Troupers - Live In San Francisco 1967

Don Nix And Alabama State Troupers - Live In San Francisco 1967 - 2016

from AMG
The Alabama State Troupers was a big-band soul outfit formed by ex-Markey member Don Nix in 1971. Nix cut a solo album, entitled Living by the Days, for Elektra Records in 1971, and put together a touring group consisting of Lonnie Mack -- replaced by Furry Lewis -- Jeannie Greene, and the Mt. Zion Band and Choir. The group embarked on a national tour that took them across the South and West to California, initially to promote Nix's album, but the shows soon took on a life of their own, especially with Lewis -- a veteran bluesman with more than 40 years in the business.

Live in San Francisco is a bootleg real one recorded in october 1971 at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

The Alabama State Troupers - Road Show AND Live Troupers For The Lord

The Alabama State Troupers - Road Show - 1972

from Amazon
One of the great, lost, legendary live albums in '70s rock finally sees a legitimate, full-length release with Real Gone Music's deluxe, two-CD issue of The Alabama State Troupers: Road Show. The brainchild of Elektra president Jac Holzman and Memphis music legend Don Nix, the 'Troupers were supposed to be a traveling roadshow highlighting the talents of various Southern musicians who were signed to Elektra, most prominently Nix, singer Jeanie Greene (best known for her work with Elvis and at Muscle Shoals), and guitarist Lonnie Mack. Days before the tour, Mack quit, having had a self-described Biblical vision telling him not to go, so Nix found quite the replacement: legendary bluesman Furry Lewis, whose solo set takes up the first side of the double album. The rest of the record features Nix and Greene with what amounts to be the backup group of your Southern R&B wet dreams; dubbed the Mt. Zion Band and Choir, it featured such stellar talents as guitarists Wayne Perkins and Tippy Armstrong, vocalists Marlin Greene and Brenda Patterson, keyboardist Clayton Ivey, bassist Bob Wray and other Muscle Shoals sidemen. Recorded at two October 1971 California performances, Road Show is kind of like the American version of Joe Cocker s Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour, a rollicking, boisterous and most of all soulful blend of gospel, R&B and rock in which one can hear the nascent stirrings of what would come to be known as Southern rock a little later in the decade.

Don Nix - Gone Too Long

Don Nix - Gone Too Long - 1976

Bons Sons!!!!
