Glenn Hughes - The Official Bootleg Box Set Volume Two - 1993-2013

Glenn Hughes - The Official Bootleg Box Set Volume Two - 1993-2013 - 2019

He’s been hailed “The Voice Of Rock”, and for good reason, as this 6 CD live box set happily testifies. With vocals soaked in blues and soul, but above all ROCK, Glenn Hughes has performed with many rock legends, including Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Hughes-Thrall, Trapeze and Black Country Communion. Despite his huge talents as a musician and as a songwriter, the 80s were relatively quiet era for Glenn, something that has been more than made up for in his much more prolific 90s, noughties and beyond.

Spanning two decades, Disc One kicks this set off with “Incense And Peaches: From The Archives Volume 1”, an interesting and unusual set of demos and works in progress. Originally released in 2000 through Glenn’s own Pink Cloud Records, it was a collection of previously unreleased songs covering more laid back, pop and soul sounds rather than hard rock.

Glenn has always had a major following in Scandinavia, and this collection has no less than three shows recorded in Sweden, starting with his June 1993 show at the Blitz Nightclub in Borlänge on Disc Two. A belting take on Deep Purple’s ‘Burn’ is followed by ‘Muscle And Blood’ originally recorded by the short lived, but much loved Hughes Thrall. Glenn’s first major band Trapeze are also revisited with ‘You Are The Music’ and ‘Coast To Coast’. At the time Glenn was supporting his latest album, “L.A. Blues Authority Volume II: Glenn Hughes – Blues”, from which ‘A Right To Live’ and ‘So Much Love To Give’ were taken. But it wouldn’t be a Glenn show without revisiting some more Deep Purple classics, with ‘This Time Around’, ‘Gettin’ Tighter’, ‘You Keep On Moving’ and ‘Smoke On The Water’ featured.

Disc Three was captured three months later at Gothenburg’s Zoo Club. Opening with ‘The Liar’ from the as yet unreleased “From Now On” album, the set also includes a cover of Hughes Thrall’s ‘I Got Your Number’, Purple’s ‘This Time Around’, ‘Gettin´ Tighter’ and ‘You Keep On Moving’, as well as blues standard ‘The House Of Rising Sun’. This disc is rounded off with five tracks at Glasgow’s Cathouse in November 1995, including ‘Big Time’ and ‘Talkin’ To The Messiah’ from that year’s “Feel” solo record.

Glenn was back in Sweden for a show at Gino’s in Stockholm in November 1996, spread across Discs Four and Five, kicking off with Trapeze’s ‘Way Back To The Bone’ and ‘Touch My Life’. ‘Push!’ was taken from the previous year’s “Feel”, with ‘Cover Me’, ‘Talk About It’ and ‘I Don’t Want To Live That Way Again’ originally appearing on 1996’s “Addiction” album. A cover of Ozzy’s ‘Goodbye To Romance’ followed by the self-explanatory ‘12-Bar Blues’, both recorded in 1992, are added bonuses to complete Disc Five.

We jump ahead to May 2013 for a firey show captured at the Crossroads Club in Rome, with no less than seven Mk3 and Mk4 Deep Purple classics aired; ‘Stormbringer’, ‘Might Just Take Your Life’, ‘Sail Away’, ‘Mistreated’, ‘Gettin’ Tighter’, ‘You Keep On Moving’, and ending the set with ‘Burn’. Also featured is a cover of ‘Superstition’, written by one of Glenn’s biggest heroes, Stevie Wonder.

Purple Records have reissued expanded collections across Glenn’s solo catalogue, including solo debut “Play Me Out”, “Feel”, “Addiction”, “The Way It Is”, “Return Of Crystal Karma” and “Building The Machine”. Glenn Hughes also appears on the recently reissued 3CD set and 2LP edition of 1974’s “The Butterfly Ball And The Grasshopper’s Feast” by Roger Glover And Friends, also on Purple Records, as well as the “The Official Bootleg Box Set Volume One”.

Whilst every effort has been made to produce the best possible audio, limitations in the material drawn from various, non-standard, and un-official sources means that the quality may not be up to the standard usually expected. All tracks have been included for their historical importance, and to present an anthology of Glenn Hughes live on stage from 1993-2013. The Official Bootleg Box Set Volume 2 is a raw testament to what this very influential artist did best; playing bluesy, soulful hard rock, live on stage, and is drawn from a variety of sources, including mainly recordings that have previously only been available as pirate releases.

Phenomena - Still The Night

Tom and Mel Galley put Phenomena together in 1984. Glenn Hughes, Don Airey, Cozy Powell, Neil Murray had been enlisted…Whitesnake versus Deep Purple, a metalised marriage made in hard rock heaven. The following year they released the debut. It was to be the first of an art rock triptych with a supernatural theme.

The second and third albums brought in additional vocalists and musicians, but it was recognised that Hughes was the marquee name, thus this compilation cherry picks the Hughes tracks from the trilogy.

Rumours that MTV had killed the concept album stone dead proved to have been exagerrated, as Phenomena sold over a million copies. Unquestionably a product of its times, it ignored the musicians’ day job and opted for a focus on Radio Rock, big on mood and atmosphere. ‘Dance With The Devil’ lighly underscores the drama, with celtic flavoured keyboard frills and understated axework, leaving Hughes’s macho tones centre stage. The especially good ‘Who’s Watching You’ and ‘Twilight Zone’ particularly combine keyboard heavy pop and overt AOR tropes, recalling Asia and ELO.

Galley assembled a cast of thousands for the follow up, Dream Runner (1987). It is a considerably more expansive affair. ‘Hearts On Fire and ‘Surrender’ lead the way with bigger choruses and juicier axe solos. Both sound like lost pages from Europe’s 80s songbook, full of cascading keys and dramatic choruses. And even up against Ray (Badlands) Gillen and Max (GTR/Bronz) Bacon, Hughes doing his mucho macho thing on these two tracks is what grabs your attention.

We skip the “Hughes free” Inner Visions (1992), and move onto Psycho Fantasy (2006), with Hughes handling vocals on three tracks.

The entire album was a much heavier affair than the Project’s first two releases, with some interesting songwriting going on. Tony Martin’s and Lee Small’s vocals are a thrill to listen to, but it’s Hughes who gives the album weight and momentum. His lived in vocals, a legacy from his dalliance with the darkside a decade and more before, are a compelling driving force on the hard rocking ‘Touch My Life’ and the funked up ‘How Do You Feel’, with the riffy, metallised ‘Higher’ boldly reminding us of the musician’s seventies roots.

Still The Night is as much a salute to Hughes as it is a Phenomena compilation, providing us with the best of both worlds.

This compilation collects together all 17 Tracks featuring Glenn Hughes on Lead Vocals.

02. How Do You Feel?

Glenn Hughes - Official Bootleg Box Set Volume Three 1995-2010 - 2020

Glenn Hughes - Official Bootleg Box Set Volume Three 1995-2010 - 2020

This third volume of unreleased live concerts from Glenn’s solo career kicks off with a show from his 1995 tour to support his then latest album “Feel”, plus the previous year’s “From Now On… “, with an (almost) hometown solo appearance at the Wulfrun Hall in Wolverhampton on 17th November 1995 (CD1 & CD2). Spread across two discs, the set kicks off with songs from what were Glenn’s more recent solo offerings, with ‘Big Time’, ‘The Liar’ and ‘Push’, before Trapeze classics ‘Coast To Coast’ and ‘Way Back To The Bone’. It wouldn’t be a Glenn show without featuring Deep Purple Mk3 and Mk4 hits, with ‘This Time Around’, ‘You Keep On Moving’ and ‘Gettin’ Tighter’ from 1975’s “Come Taste The Band”, ‘You Fool No One’ and the title track from 1974’s “Burn” plus the title track from “Stormbringer”.

The following day Glenn made a live appearance at the more intimate LA2 in London, on 18th November 1995 (CD3). Unsurprisingly, much of the set replicates that from Wolverhampton, and no bad thing as Glenn revisits songs from across his long and varied musical journey, from Trapeze to Purple to his solo renaissance in the 1990s.

13 years later saw Glenn performing an exclusive acoustic show at Esquires in Bedford on 3rd May 2008 (CD4), celebrating the 40th anniversary of Deep Purple. As well as the expected Purple classics ‘Mistreated’, ‘This Time Around’ / ‘Owed to “G”‘, ‘Holy Man’, ‘You Keep On Moving’ and ‘Stormbringer’, Glenn also includes a rare airing of his debut solo single ‘I Found A Woman’ from his debut solo LP, “Play Me Out”. Glenn even includes a cover of The Moody Blues’ ‘Nights In White Satin’.

The final two discs feature a show recorded at the Spring & Airbrake, Belfast on 9th October 2010 (CD5 & 6). Kicking off with Hughes – Thrall’s ‘Muscle And Blood’, the solo songs ‘Orion’ from “Soul Mover”, ‘You Kill Me’ from “The Way It Is” and ‘Can’t Stop The Flood’ from “Building The Machine” are included in a show that climaxes with the title track to the “Addiction” album and finally Deep Purple’s “Burn”.

Purple Records have also reissued expanded collections of Glenn’s solo catalogue, including “Play Me Out”, “Feel”, “Addiction”, “The Way It Is”, “Return Of Crystal Karma” and “Building The Machine”. Glenn Hughes also appears on the reissued 3CD set of 1974’s “The Butterfly Ball And The Grasshopper’s Feast” by Roger Glover And Friends, also on Purple Records.

Glenn Hughes - The Official Bootleg Series - Volume I

Glenn Hughes - The Official Bootleg Series - Volume I - 2018

He’s been hailed “The Voice Of Rock”, and for good reason, as this 7 CD live box set ably testifies. With vocals soaked in blues and soul, Glenn Hughes has played with and fronted many legends of rock, including Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Hughes-Thrall, Trapeze and Black Country Communion.

When Glenn’s 1994 tour hit Japan, always a stronghold of Glenn fans, he was promoting the “From Now On…” album. Originally released as “Burning Japan Live”, the show features ‘The Liar’, ‘Lay My Body Down’ and the title track from the new “From Now On…” album, among an incendiary set that touches on some of the cream of Glenn’s back catalogue, including the Hughes-Thrall classics ‘Muscle And Blood’ and ‘I Got Your Number’, Trapeze’s ‘Coast To Coast’, plus a host of Purple classics, including ‘Lady Double Dealer’, ‘This Time Around’ and ‘Owed To ‘G’’.

The same tour took Glenn to the Alexandra Rock Teater venue in Copenhagen, Denmark on October 25, 1994. In a similar collection to the Japanese show on CD1, the appreciative Danish crowd on CD2 are treated to Deep Purple’s ‘Burn’, ‘Gettin’ Tighter’ and ‘You Keep On Moving’, as well as ‘Into The Void’ from the then current “From Now On…” album, co-written with guitarist Eric Anders Bojstedt and keyboard player Mic Michaeli, in a band that also featured Thomas Larsson on guitar, Ian Haugland on drums and John Levénon bass.

Disc 3 kicks off with four lively Deep Purple classics captured at the Gran Rex Theatre in Buenos Aires, Argentina in December 2003. The acoustic set from Sydney, Australia in June 2006 that completes Disc 3 sees Glenn delve back to his debut solo platter, “Play Me Out”, with the single ‘I Found A Woman’, followed by a unique cover of ‘Nights In White Satin’ from the 2006 CD “Music For The Divine”, plus a take of Procol Harum’s ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’, an impassioned version of “Burn” album classic ‘Mistreated’, plus the title track to the album he was then promoting, “Soul Mover”.

Discs 4 and 5 kick off with Purple barnstormer ‘Stormbringer’ from a show at Circo Voador, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil on October 28, 2007. As well as Purple cuts ‘Might Just Take Your Life’, ‘You Keep On Moving’ that finales with ‘Burn’, the set includes ‘Steppin’ On’ and ‘You Got Soul’ from “Music For The Divine”, ‘Don’t Let Me Bleed’, ‘Land Of The Livin’ (Wonderland)’ and the driving title track from “Soul Mover”, with a band featuring Glenn on vocals & bass guitar, JJ Marsh on guitar, Anders Olinder on keyboards and Matt Goom on drums.

Despite his huge talents as a musician and as a songwriter, the 80s were relatively quiet period for Glenn fans, something that was more than made up for in the much more prolific 90s and noughties. In a run of very powerful solo releases, “First Underground Nuclear Kitchen” is one of the best, and an album he was promoting when his 2010 solo tour hit Belgian venue Spirit of 66 in Verviers on October 16, 2010. Spread across Discs 6 and 7, the show kicks off with Hughes-Thrall’s ‘Muscle And Blood’ followed by Trapeze’s ‘Touch My Life’ and ‘Medusa’, the latter covered in 2010 by Black Country Communion. By this time Glenn had built up a very solid and impressive back catalogue of solo releases, and this Belgian show includes ‘Orion’ and ‘Don’t Let Me Bleed’ from 2005’s “Soul Mover”, ‘Can’t Stop The Flood’ from 2001’s “Building The Machine”, ‘You Kill Me’ from 1999’s “The Way It Is” and the title track to 1996’s “Addiction”. In a band featuring Anders Olinder on keyboards, Søren Anderson on guitar and Pontus Engborg on drums, no Glenn show would be complete without revisiting Deep Purple, represented here with ‘Sail Away’ originally from 1974’s “Burn”.

VA - Keep Calm And Salute Queen

VA - Keep Calm And Salute Queen - 2015

California Breed (Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham & Andrew Watt)

California Breed - California Breed - 2014

Glenn Hughes And Joe Lynn Turner - EP

Glenn Hughes And Joe Lynn Turner - EP - 2012

Trapeze - The Final Swing

Trapeze - The Final Swing - 1974

from wikipedia....

Trapeze were an English rock band formed in March 1969, by vocalist John Jones and guitarist/keyboardist Terry Rowley (who named the band), with guitarist Mel Galley, singer/bassist Glenn Hughes, and drummer Dave Holland. The band had a fairly fluid line up, finally dissolving in 1994, and although they never found commercial success themselves, several members went on to join better known bands including Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, Judas Priest and Uriah Heep.

The core and more familiar line-up of the band was Glenn Hughes, Mel Galley and Dave Holland. After Glenn Hughes' departure in June 1973, Galley and Holland decided to try to keep the band together, which they did with constantly varying members until 1979 when Holland went on to join Judas Priest. At this point the band broke up. Holland tried to revive the band in 1990, after leaving Priest, but the band finally broke up in 1994. Their first three albums remain their best known and most commercially successful.

The Final Swing is a compilation album released in 1974. It features songs from the original line-up of  Galley,  Hughes and Holland.
