Tommy Bolin and Friends - Great Gypsy Soul

Tommy Bolin and Friends - Great Gypsy Soul - 2012

Bolin was a revered '70s-era rock-jazz-funk guitarist, singer and songwriter who toured and recorded with both Deep Purple and the James Gang, made two remarkable solo albums and played on influential fusion sessions for Billy Cobham and Alphonse Mouzon. This, he accomplished by the time he was 25, when he died of a drug overdose.

Thirty-six years later, co-producers Haynes and Greg Hampton use some of Bolin's working tapes and outtakes as the foundation over which some of today's hottest ax men play.

The mixes can be a little rough, and the graft doesn't always bear fruit. But when it does, the results are explosive. Trucks especially tears it up on the fusion excursion "Smooth Fandango," and Haynes adds some nice Bolin-style sonic touches to "Teaser." The most delicious track is "Savannah Woman," on which jazz maestro John Scofield's elegant licks perfectly complement the number's breezy tropical vibe.

Bolin's original vocals remain on most of the tracks. But former Deep Purple bassist Glenn Hughes howls convincingly on "Sugar Shack" and "Lotus."

VA - Song Of a Young Country (The New Zeland Story in Song)

VA - Song Of a Young Country (The New Zeland Story in Song) - 1971 (RE 2010)

FROM www.audioculture.co.nz
In 1971 singer, composer and folksong collector Neil Colquhoun released a concept album of songs by – or re-creating the experience of – the Pakeha pioneers of the 19th century. Among the writers were Colquhoun, Phil Garland, Rudy Sunde and many by unknown early settlers, collected in the 1960s. The multi-artist double LP on Kiwi Pacific Records received renewed attention in 2009 when it was included by Nick Bollinger in his 2009 book 100 Essential New Zealand Albums (Awa).

The 1971 album was followed a year later by an accompanying songbook, Song of a Young Country (Reed); this was re-released in 2010, in a lavish production by Steele Roberts.

Whether sung, played, read or listened to, the songs in this influential New Zealand folksong compilation and songbook provide insight and human colour to the bare facts of our collective past.

Music and vocalising have been in fluid evolution ever since the first humans slapped a leathery foot on a hollow rock, knocked a tree with a stick and it made a pleasing sound, or mimicked the cadences of birdsong and the rutting noises of animals to attract them on a hunt.

Millennia on from then, there are multiple music styles and labels. Folk music is one of many. This has been blending, hybridising or diverging since Woody Guthrie sang about the Depression and since the folk revival of the sixties when Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan sang out in protest; when civil rights marchers chorused aching spirituals about injustice, and since Odetta or Buffy Sainte-Marie told it like it was.

The 2010 reissue of the Song of a Young Country anthology

In New Zealand, folk clubs around the country host the works, from bluegrass, American urban blues, old-time country and Celtic stylists to Euro gypsy jazz, jug bands, a cappella harmony groups and soloists playing covers and originals.

The clubs also have a solid core of traditionalists who enjoy what they consider the “real” Kiwi folk music; that is, the songs, sea shanties, old ballads and work chants sung or recited by the people at the birth of these islands as a Treaty-formalised Crown-Māori nation. They were the sailors, sealers, wives and whalers, adventurers, bushmen and the like, who sang out their joy, humour, or misery during their hard-slog work and after hours; about bully bosses and fair blokes, madams and murderers, hardships underground and weird happenings above; about social milestones, triumphs, shipwrecks and other disasters.

VA - Electric Ladyland Redux

VA - Electric Ladyland Redux - 2015

After waiting several months, we can finally answer the obvious question: does Electric Ladyland Redux honour its glorious model? The answer is without a doubt “yes”. Firstly, because each one of the bands involved found different ways of making their respective cover song their own. That ALL THEM WITCHES would take on the lengthy blues jam “Voodoo Chile” seems obvious a priori. It remains so a posteriori as the Tennessee-born quartet walks on Hendrix’s steps with ease. There’s a certain nonchalance to their version, as if they didn’t have to push themselves. In doing so, the band manages to bring back the original spirit of the song. Just as EARTHLESS does, rolling out their acid groove on “Let The Good Times Roll” as if the track was written for them. As they manage to own the song without ever betraying its initial style (or their own), EARTHLESS reveals the role Hendrix’ music plays in their artistic identity. Even bands whose musical styles are further away from Hendrix’ music managed to find a gimmick to make their covers interesting. Superchief’s raw vocals beef up “Crosstown Traffic” while TUNGA MOLN disorients the listener with their Swedish version of “All Along The Watchtower”. In this game, though, ELDER pulls the longest straw with a full and extensive reshaping of “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”. The band dares to change the song beyond recognition as they allow themselves to move across different styles and atmospheres, starting with a lengthy psychedelic intro, then stepping into a heavy rock saturation block which gives way to a distorted solo wandering into experimental territories. ELDER’s “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)” is a tour de force which honours the original Electric Ladyland diversity.

VA - Unsung Hero - A Tribute to The Music of Ron Davies

VA - Unsung Hero - A Tribute to The Music of Ron Davies - 2013

Ron Davies was a genius of rhyme and melody. He has been described by his peers as the "quintessential poet” and the "songwriter's writer." John Hadley (a music professor at the University of Oklahoma) was quoted as saying, “I separate the world into two kinds of people, the ones that get Ron Davies and the ones that don’t.”

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana (the oldest son of country singer Tex Dickerson), Ron was influenced by songwriters like Hank Williams, but he also loved the music of Blind Lemon Jefferson and classical guitarist Andrés Segovia. Ron spent his early years living in the South, until his parents separated, and he moved with his two siblings to Washington State. Ron's last name was changed when his mother remarried, and he was adopted by his kind and loving stepfather, Darby Davies, who bought him his first guitar. Ron’s songs often reflect his love of the Pacific Northwest, and yet a longing to get “Back To The South.”

By the time Ron was seventeen, he had written an album’s worth of stellar songs for a Seattle based band called The Wailers, along with a regional hit single entitled "It's You Alone." Ron's unique style of singing and writing (referred to by Joan Baez as a cross between Bob Dylan and John Lennon) caught the attention of A&M record executives in California. Ron was signed to a recording contract in 1968 and released his first solo album, which he called "Silent Song Through The Land," featuring nine of his original compositions including the blues standard "It Ain't Easy." As a side note, the angelic harmony vocals on this album were sung by Ron’s beautiful young wife, Vicki Lynn Davies, who was his singing partner from 1962 to 1974, as well as the mother of his two daughters.

Ron’s career received a major boost in 1970 when Three Dog Night recorded “It Ain’t Easy” and made it the title of their album. Although often miscredited to Ray Davies from The Kinks (Ron displayed his wry sense of humor when he asked his publisher to take some of The Kinks out of his copyright), “It Ain’t Easy” gained international fame when a British artist by the name of David Bowie recorded it on his RCA album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars."

It wasn’t long before Ron Davies’ songs were in demand and being recorded by such iconic artists as Long John Baldry, Dave Edmunds, Joe Cocker, Anne Murray, Dobie Gray, Bettye LaVette, Chris Smithers, Glenn Yarbrough, Merry Clayton, Mitch Ryder and Steppenwolf’s John Kay, to name a few. Australian born pop singer Helen Reddy recorded what would later become one of Ron’s signature songs entitled “Long Hard Climb” and made it the title of her 1973 platinum selling album. This song was also recorded by Maria Muldaur on her 1974 Reprice album "Midnight On The Oasis."

With his newfound success, A&M decided to team Ron up with Grammy award winning engineer, Tommy Vicarri, to co-produce his album, "UFO." Enlisting the help of musicians Billy Preston, Wilton Felder, Andy Newmark, and The Rolling Stones’ “Brown Sugar” girl Claudia Lennear, they created a critically acclaimed masterpiece that prompted Rock Magazine to declare Ron Davies “The Best New Songwriter of the Year.”

Ron moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1985 to write for Cedarwood Publishing and later on in his career for Warner/Chappell Music. His talents were quickly recognized when Jerry Jeff Walker recorded "The Man He Used To Be" and two of his songs appeared on the Grammy nominated Joan Baez album "Play Me Backwards." Ron Davies’ songs have also been recorded by Randy Travis, Nancy Griffith, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill and Gail Davies, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Chris Scruggs, and Jack White & The Raconteurs.

Although not a professional actor, Ron Davies was cast as the lead character in the George Jones’ video, "old Hard Truth," in 1999. He toured Europe with his sister, country singer Gail Davies, in 2002 and also appeared with her at The Kerrville Folk Festival. Inspired by the reaction he received from the audience (Ron received a standing ovation at the end of his performance) Ron returned to Nashville to record an introspective album entitled "Where Does The Time Go." Sadly, this would be the last album Ron would record. He died of a heart attack on October 30, 2003, leaving behind an amazing legacy of more than 500 songs.

Unsung Hero – A Tribute To The Music of Ron Davies, features 22 of Ron’s finest compositions recorded by some of his favorite artists. This album is a must for any serious connoisseur of good music and poetry.

VA -Yesterday And Today - A 50th Anniversary Tribute To Yes

VA -Yesterday And Today - A 50th Anniversary Tribute To Yes - 2018

Fifty years is a long time for anything. It seems an especially long time for a band to exist…and particularly one that always set out to push boundaries and create music that wouldn’t necessarily appeal to the pop music buying masses. …And yet, here we are: prog rock legends Yes celebrated their half century in 2018. Granted, they’ve had an ever evolving, less than stable line up – no fewer than nineteen members have passed through the official ranks of Yes since their inception in 1968, and at the end of 2018, none of the band members are the true founders – but there is still a Yes. Detractors be damned.

This 12-song collection, helmed and herded by Florida guitarist John Wesley, features new performances of some of the band’s classic songs, including “Midnight Rider,” “Statesboro Blues,” “Ramblin’ Man,” and “Whippin’ Post” done by a host of guitarists and singers, Ronnie Earl, Debbie Davies, Eli Cook, Eric Gales, Pat Travers, among them. VA - Two Rooms - Celebrating The Songs of Elton John And Bernie Taupin

VA - Two Rooms - Celebrating The Songs of Elton John And Bernie Taupin - 1991

from AMG
Two Rooms is a wildly uneven star-studded tribute to a wildly uneven superstar songwriting team. Though Elton John and Bernie Taupin wrote many of the best pop songs of the '70s and '80s, they have written more than their fair share of clunkers as well. Some of them were chosen for this collection. Tina Turner, for example, tackles the ludicrously juvenile "The Bitch Is Back" and somehow manages to make it even worse. Daryl Hall and John Oates don't fare any better with the embarrassingly outdated disco anthem "Philadelphia Freedom." But most of the songs on Two Rooms are drawn from Elton and Bernie's A-list and some of them really illustrate the depth of their songwriting abilities. Sinéad O'Connor finds the tortured soul of the 1989 divorce song "Sacrifice" in a way that the original recording never did. George Michael's radiant tenor lights a fire under "Tonight," another song about a disintegrating relationship. Sting gives the album's most memorable performance, bringing haunted melancholy to the seldom heard "Come Down in Time." Unfortunately, many of the artists are not that sensitive to their chosen songs. Wilson Phillips makes a chipper dentist's office ballad out of the heart-rending elegy "Daniel," while Jon Bon Jovi brings unwanted screech rock bluster to "Levon" and Rod Stewart turns the gentle, charming sap of "Your Song" into noxious, gooey sap. The record succeeds in conveying the enormous influence and productivity of the collaboration between John and Taupin. But it sometimes makes you think they've been just a bit too prolific and that their influence might not always be a good one.

01. Border Song - Eric Clapton
02. Rocket Man (I Think It's Going To Be A Long, Long Time) - Kate Bush

VA - Doctors, Professors, Kings & Queens: The Big Ol' Box of New Orleans

VA - Doctors, Professors, Kings & Queens: The Big Ol' Box of New Orleans - 2004

from allaboutjazz.com
Shout Factory's four-CD box set Doctors, Professors, King and Queens: The Big Ol' Box of New Orleans represents a perfect storm when it comes to reissues. This box set is musically exciting, a complete representation of its subject matter, and just plain fun to listen. Not only that, it fulfills a vacuum in the market, because until this collection, one would think that there hasn't been any new recording of music in New Orleans since the Meters in the early 1970's. In fact, New Orleans has been just as vibrant, diverse and productive during each and every era of recording from 1923-2004 and this collection proves it!

The collection takes a major risk that pays off, of not thematically organizing each of the four compact discs in this collection. Not bowing to the obvious track order solution of chronological order or by genre, the set weaves effortlessly from track to track without any other theme than great performance after great performance. Some ebb and flow exists between the more traditional to the more up- tempo, but it works and works brilliantly.

The package includes eighty-five recordings and a top of the line eighty-plus page book that includes beautiful photographs and insightful essay about the city and each artist and their recordings and what we at the Vault love the most detailed liner notes and credits. The Vault appreciates when we know who each instrumentalist is, the producer, engineer, studio and city, the date of the recording, the original record it was released on and the original recording company. It is this attention to detail that makes a good boxset an excellent boxset.

The set kicks off with current New Orleans jazz ambassador and great chef, Kermit Ruffins informing us of his wish "Drop Me Off in New Orleans." From there the set visits recordings from different era and styles.

The first category of artists included comes from those that helped define dawn of the recording industry and jazz. Included are some of New Orleans favorite sons, Louis Armstrong (with the Hot Seven on "Potato Head Blues" and with his Dixieland Seven on the final track "Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans?"), Jellyroll Morton, Sidney Bechet and His New Orleans Feet Warmers and Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band. All four and their various sidemen brought the sounds of the Crescent City out for the rest of the world to hear, appreciate and emulate.

The next major era represented comes from the independent record label explosion in the late 1940's and 1950's when New Orleans was a hot bed for so much recording, especially in the fields of Rhythm and Blues, Blues and Rock and Roll. This is where a tremendous breadth of styles and artists are well documented (from jazz to R&B, from Cajun to rock and roll) in this collection. Artists with some major national hits included are Fats Domino, Clarence "Frogman" Henry, Ernie K-Doe, Huey "Piano" Smith, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Al Johnson, Frankie Ford, Chris Kenner, Little Richard, Eddie Bo, and Lloyd Price. Here the boxset focuses on these artists' big hits, except for Little Richard (who while not from New Orleans, developed his career and recorded his major hits within the city limits), whose "Rip It Up" represent his New Orleans feel better than perhaps "Tutti Frutti" or "Good Golly, Miss Molly." Other artists of this era include The Hawketts, George Lewis' Ragtime Band, Shirley & Lee, Smiley Lewis and Benny Spellman.

Another set of artists and their recordings are culminated from the timeless performers that are not defined by hits, eras or genres that are/were the cornerstone of the Crescent City. The types of performers that as soon as you hear their name, images of the sites, sounds and smells (you can almost smell the jambalaya or pot of crawfish boiling) of the Big Easy come to mind. This category includes Professor Longhair, James Booker, Dr. John, Allan Toussaint, Kermit Ruffins, Rebirth Brass Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Meters, Irma Thomas, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, The Neville Brothers, Dave Bartholomew, The Wild Magnolias, Ellis Marsalis and Pete Fountain.

Also well represented here are today's lifeblood of the New Orleans scene that meld the funk and soul of yesteryear with the sounds from all over. These modern day New Orleans musical ambassadors include the super funky Galactic, Swedish roots rocker Anders Osborne, blues pianist all-star Marcia Ball, all star jam band The Radiators, jazz young lion James Andrews, brass band music for the new millennium from Coolbone, the soulful and excellent songwriting of Mem Shannon (probably the funniest song on the album, his take on the proliferation on our streets of SUV's) and the musical melting pot sounds of The New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars.

While not hailing from the city limits of New Orleans, this collection pays serious attention to the sounds that come from a two-hour trip west of New Orleans to Southwest Louisiana; Cajun and Zydeco music. Yes, the boxset revolves around the music that came from within the Big Easy, but there is no doubt that the music, culture and cuisine from Cajun and Creole country are as part of the fabric of New Orleans than anything else. Therefore including music from artists such as Clifton Chenier, Beausoleil, Lil Queenie, Boozoo Chavis, Geno Delafose, Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, Beau Jocque and the Zydeco Hi-Rollers (with the great 'Give Him Cornbread'), Bruce Daigrepont and The Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band completes the picture of the musical scene of New Orleans.

While I could spend time pointing out some artists that the Vault feels deserves placement in the collection (Ok, for fun, we'll throw in a few: Los Hombres Caliente, King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, the Subdudes, Better Than Ezra, Victoria Williams (whose recent record has a stellar version of "Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans?"), Rockin Sidney, Keith Frank and the Soileau Zydeco Band, Tab Benoit, Juvenile, The Balfa Brothers, Astral Project, Nicholas Payton, Amede Ardoin, and the list goes on and should include the "Swamp Pop" genre). The Vault could go on, but this just illustrates the point that there is so much great music and artists that call New Orleans home and to include them all would be a cumbersome twenty disc collection, which could lose the impact and flavor this boxset so excellently achieves.

The Vault cannot stress enough the great feel and class this collection has and the fact it encompasses so many styles, genres and eras and it flows so well from beginning to end - we have no higher praise. Maybe, the great folks at Shout Factory are just setting us up for an addendum release or a sequel; if that's the case bring them on, we love it!

VA - Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule, North Mississippi All-stars Duo and Friends - Another One For Woody

VA - Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule, North Mississippi All-stars Duo and Friends - Another One For Woody - 2010

An absolutely historical night of music.  A bitter-sweet night of music.  A magical combination of guitar-shredding artists who came together for the memory of one man. Allen Woody! This was a man whose musical presence touched the lives of numerous musicians, inspired a genre and who’s musical contribution deserves recognition.

Allen Woody!! For those of us who tend to seek out a bass line in a song, the name Allen Woody should register in your brain’s musical library.  Specifically, in the southern rock genre. He was the stand-out bassist for bands such as The Allman Brothers Band, Gov’t Mule, The Artimus Pyle Band and more.

His unexpected passing on August 26, 2000 encouraged his fellow musicians to hold the first benefit called One For Woody in September 2000.  Ten years later, Warren Haynes and an ARSENAL of guitar-wielding friends put together the second benefit for this greatly missed musician: Another One For Woody: “Wish You Were Here!”

VA - Through a Faraway Window - A Tribute to Jimmy Silva

VA - Through a Faraway Window - A Tribute to Jimmy Silva - 2010

The brilliant lyrics and jangling melodies of San Francisco Bay Area native Jimmy Silva are a superb fit for the often-abused tribute album format. Over the course of four luminous solo albums for PopLlama and East Side Digital, Silva would frequently step aside and let the lead-vocal spotlight fall upon singers as diverse as Sal Valentino of the Beau Brummels or Bill Jedrzejewski or Kim Wonderley, both members of Silva's final band, the Goats.

Jimmy Silva died tragically in Seattle in 1994 at the age of 42 from complications after contracting chicken pox. But his small legion of friends and admirers have never forgotten Silva and his sometimes stirring/often melancholy songs. Like New Testament disciples, they have banded together on From A Faraway Window (SteadyBoy) to celebrate the music their dear friend left behind. Rock journalist Jud Cost and Texas Music Hall of Famer Freddie Steady Krc along with ex-Goats Kim Wonderley and Eric Scott have rounded up selections from Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck of the Minus 5 (and R.E.M.), Jon Auer of the Posies, Roy Loney of the Flamin' Groovies, Freddie Steady Krc of Roky Erickson & the Explosives, Christy McWilson, the Jigsaw Seen, Sal Valentino of the Beau Brummels, Dennis Diken of the Smithereens, the Young Fresh Fellows, John Wesley Harding and Chris Eckman of the Walkabouts in a technicolor, extra-large mural depicting the very best material from the haunting catalog of Jimmy Silva.

01. Intro/Carival Barker
02. Waking Up - Dennis Diken
03. All The Places - Sal Valentino
04. I've Got Time - The Flywheels
05. People Standing In A Line - The Minus 5

Various Artists - Nigeria 70 - The Definitive Story of 1970s Funky Lagos (2 CD RE) - 2009

Originally released riding a wave of global interest in Afrobeat at the turn of the decade, Strut's original Nigeria 70 set broke the mould for African compilations when it first surfaced in September 2001. Digging deep into Nigeria's archives, the collection showcased a stunning variety of fusions recorded across the country during the 70s, from national icons like Fela Kuti and Sunny Ade to lesser known young bands like Monomono and Ofo The Black Company. "Nigeria 70" paved the way for the many fine labels like Soundway and Analog Africa.

VA - Who Are You – An All Star Tribute to the Who

VA - Who Are You – An All Star Tribute to the Who - 2012

from AM|G

Who Are You: An All-Star Tribute to the Who collects mostly faithful covers by a wide range of rockers, spanning various highlights of the Who's legacy, hitting on classics from their early mod days as well as later arena rock staples. The monolithic nature of the Who's catalog makes the task of delivering an acceptable cover a little tricky. If you're going to do it by the numbers (no reference intended), it's gotta be stellar or it will pale in comparison to the original. Joe Lynn Turner and Leslie West's screaming rendition of "The Seeker" staggers around with all the verve and bile of the original, while even a slightly less energetic reading of "Baba O'Riley" by Jerry Goldman with Nektar falls flat, coming off deflated and milquetoast. Iggy Pop's clumsy version of "I Can't Explain" flops similarly, sounding just a touch too phoned-in for its own good. An explosive version of "My Generation" by the Kinks' Dave Davies with members of the Vibrators and the Damned makes up for the missteps of the rest of the comp, with blown-out guitar tones and crashing drums sounding almost as youthfully tense and electric as the original. The Raveonettes also offer a highlight with a dreamy reverb-pop rendition of "The Kids Are Alright." Though a spotty affair, the strengths of Who Are You redeem the more hackneyed moments.

01. Eminence Front
02. Baba O'Riley
03. I Can See For Miles
04. Love Reign O'er Me
05. My Generation
06. The Kids Are Alright
07. Won't Get Fooled Again08. Anyway Anyhow Anywhere
09. I Can't Explain
10. Behind Blue Eyes
11. Magic Bus
12. Who Are You
13. Pinball Wizard
14. Squeeze Box
15. Bargain

VA - Meet on the Ledge an Island Folk-Rock Anthology

VA - Meet on the Ledge an Island Folk-Rock Anthology - 2009

from recordcollectormag.com
For long-time Island fans the most fun way to celebrate this hugelytrumpeted anniversary would be reissuing the two budget-price samplers which introduced so many cash-strapped kids to the label in 1969. The wide range of musical strains presented was packed with avenues to explore, but You Can All Join In’s Side Two, Track One was Fairport Convention’s hauntingly anthemic Meet On The Ledge, heralding the label’s oncoming “quiet revolution” combining folk and electric rock forms, examined here over three CDs.

The astutely-picked selection swings quite naturally from the worthy traditionalism of The Albion Band into the late, great John Martyn revamping the same form with his treated electric guitar (one of seven beauties from the man). In between these sonic goalposts bubble a diverse gaggle including the mighty Traffic, intensely poignant Sandy Denny, wonderfully-whimsical Dr Strangely Strange, Richard & Linda Thompson, Cat Stevens, Nick Drake, Incredible String Band, Jethro Tull, Ronnie Lane and less-remembered names such as Jess Roden’s Bronco and The Sutherland Brothers. The worthy nose-pinching element may put some off but folk has always been either a multi-faceted or much-divided field, depending on personal standing, so it’s further tribute to Island that they covered all these bases and made it look quite natural.

VA - Keep Calm And Salute Queen

VA - Keep Calm And Salute Queen - 2015

01. Tie Your Mother Down - Lemmy Kilmister & Ted Nugent
02. We Will Rock You - L.A. Guns
03. Bohemian Rhapsody - John Wetton

VA - Greasy Truckers Party 1972

VA - Greasy Truckers Party 1972 - 3CDs -  2007

From AMG
The Greasy Truckers Party, as a double-LP set, was the Great White Whale of many a music lover's collecting efforts in the 1970s and '80s -- always talked of being sighted by others and ever-eluding the best efforts. So in 2007, some 30-plus years later, the idea that the original eight-track master tapes had survived, and could be retrieved and -- more to the point -- would be retrieved by someone who cared enough to do something with them (and, equally important, had the time and budget with which to do anything with them) seemed a remote possibility, at best. But here it is, on three very fully packed CDs, the complete sets of Man, Brinsley Schwarz, and Hawkwind (with Magic Michael & Friends thrown in for good measure), a legendary performance on a legendary night for each band. For those unaware, in the world of British underground rock, the Greasy Truckers Party, as it was billed at the London Roundhouse on February 13, 1972, looms about as large as the Monterey International Pop Festival does in American rock lore; it wasn't the biggest gig ever played by the bands involved, but for reasons of exposure, and resulting word-of-mouth, and the excerpted live album that followed, it came to define what they were capable of, and who they were. Man, who'd shown a lot of promise on their early records leading up to this event, ripped the envelope with the show they put on that night. Hawkwind, who'd enjoyed some recording success and made a big splash at the previous year's Glastonbury Fayre, was boasting a partly new lineup, with a rhythm section comprised of ex-Rocking Vicar Lemmy on bass and Simon King on drums -- they overcame some initial technical problems to do a live set that, despite being abbreviated in earlier releases of this performance, loomed large in their legend for more than a decade. And included in that set on this release is their first-ever performance of "Silver Machine," the song that -- with Lemmy shifted to lead vocals a few months later -- would propel the band to the number three spot on the U.K. singles charts. And then there was Brinsley Schwarz, who were in many ways the most improbable act on this bill -- where the other two groups were known for doing extended jams, running as much as 20 minutes at a clip, the Brinsleys did short songs mostly based on American country music and other traditional forms; indeed, their opening number, "Country Girl," sounds like a lost outtake from the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo, and is about as far removed as can be from the heavy electric jams of Man that preceded them, or the space rock extravaganzas of Hawkwind, who followed.
