Tommy Bolin and Friends - Great Gypsy Soul

Tommy Bolin and Friends - Great Gypsy Soul - 2012

Bolin was a revered '70s-era rock-jazz-funk guitarist, singer and songwriter who toured and recorded with both Deep Purple and the James Gang, made two remarkable solo albums and played on influential fusion sessions for Billy Cobham and Alphonse Mouzon. This, he accomplished by the time he was 25, when he died of a drug overdose.

Thirty-six years later, co-producers Haynes and Greg Hampton use some of Bolin's working tapes and outtakes as the foundation over which some of today's hottest ax men play.

The mixes can be a little rough, and the graft doesn't always bear fruit. But when it does, the results are explosive. Trucks especially tears it up on the fusion excursion "Smooth Fandango," and Haynes adds some nice Bolin-style sonic touches to "Teaser." The most delicious track is "Savannah Woman," on which jazz maestro John Scofield's elegant licks perfectly complement the number's breezy tropical vibe.

Bolin's original vocals remain on most of the tracks. But former Deep Purple bassist Glenn Hughes howls convincingly on "Sugar Shack" and "Lotus."

Tommy Bolin - Live at Ebbets Field 1976 (repost)

Tommy Bolin - Live at Ebbets Field 1976 - 1996

By Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Due to the success of his back-to-back appearances at Denver's Ebbets Field club in 1974, Tommy Bolin chose to premiere his new Tommy Bolin Band at the venue in May of 1976. Included in this top-notch band were ex-Vanilla Fudge keyboardist/singer Mark Stein and drummer Narada Michael Walden (nowadays a producer), while Norma Jean Bell (saxophone) and Reggie McBride (bass) rounded out the group. Like all Tommy Bolin concerts and albums, the music is extremely varied. Included is one of Bolin's trademark songs, the swaggering "Teaser," which remains sadly overlooked by classic rock radio. You'll also find reggae sounds on "People People," jazz fusion balladry on the Narada Michael Walden-sung "Delightful," and the funky groove of "The Grind." It wouldn't be a Bolin concert without a song for Tommy to show off his guitar talent, and here it's "Marching Powder." A strong album, it's only slightly diminished by a far, far too long drum solo (almost ten minutes!), which is completely unnecessary, since the majority of the people buying Tommy Bolin CDs are doing so to hear his memorable songwriting and guitar skills. Still, it's worthy of any serious Tommy Bolin fan's time.

The Patch Of Blue & Tommy Bolin - Correctionville, Iowa

The Patch Of Blue & Tommy Bolin - Correctionville, IA - 1966 (bootleg)

The band formed in 1965 by the remaining members of Denny & the Triumphs after George Larvick, Jr. replaced bassist Denny Foote. The band were managed by George Larvick, Sr., father of band members Brad and George, Jr. George, Sr. did the bookings and drove the bands to gigs in a van with “Patch of Blue” painted on the side.

George, Sr. was impressed with the 13-year-old Tommy’s playing. Whenever he went to pick Tommy up at the Bolin’s home to take him to rehearsal or a show he almost always found him by his phonograph with a guitar, working on learning a new tune. The whole band was very good in spite of their young ages it was a tightly run ship and show, which also help contribute to Tommy’s rapid development in terms of both playing and ease on stage.

They band played a mix of rock & roll, R&B and pop hits such as “In the Midnight Hour,” “Heat Wave” and “Got My Mojo Working.” While George, Sr. enjoyed Tommy’s playing, he has related that he would have to tell Tommy to turn down sometimes. He didn’t feel that Tommy was trying to drown everybody out, but that Tommy felt that what he was playing was good and he wanted the details to be heard.

Russell Bizzett - Tommy Bolin Tribute

Russell Bizzett - Tommy Bolin Tribute - 2007

From cduniverse.com

Born in Sioux City Iowa, Russell grew up in a family of musicians and started playing drums on his father's knee at age 5. Both grandfathers were professional musicians. His mother's father was a "boogie-woogie" piano player and his father's father was a jazz trumpet player and big band orchestra leader. His father was a jazz drummer who played with the "Ink Spots". His two brothers were a trumpet player and a sax player, and both played drums as well. His love for drums drove him to pursue this calling. At 12 he started playing gigs at his grandfather's nightclub and by the time he was 19 he was touring with Chuck Berry. The following year he toured with Muddy Waters. He moved to New York City and studied with Roy Haynes as well as attended jazz workshops in Harlem. From 1974 to 1976 he toured and recorded with rock legend, Tommy Bolin. In 1977 he studied East Indian rythms with Colin Walcott at Naropa Institute, Boulder Colorado. From 1979-1981 he toured with jazz legend, Freddy Hubbard and took part in the 1981 Bo Diddly tour. 1982-1990 he toured with Jose Feliciano. He recorded for the Laverne & Shirley Show, under Bennett Salvey, the Merv Griffin Show under Mort Lindsey, musical director between 1983 and 1985 during down time from touring. Later he also recorded for the Northern Exposure TV series. The Independent film, "Stanley's Gig" also featured his talents on the sound track. He toured with French pop icon, Michel Jonasz from 1997 to 1998. Studied with International jazz drummer, Billy Higgins in 1998. Between tours he spent his time recording and performing in the LA area.

He has worked and recorded with a large variety of artists including Jimmy Smith, Billy Preston, Robben Ford, Jeff Berlin, Raul De Sousa, Jose Jose, Carol Kaye, Jane Getz, Eric Reed, Eric Marienthal, Wilton Felder, Rob Mullins, Ravi Coltrane, Dale Fielder Quartet, Michael Ruff, Mike Miller, the Fowler Brothers Air Pocket Band (former members of the Frank Zappa Band), Michel Danton, Steve Barta, Barry Wedgle, Kim Stone, Tom Scott , Rick Zunigar, George Bohanon, John Heard, Frank Zottoli, Ronald Muldrow, Dwight Trible, Kenny Garrett and many more.
